President Message As I write this, we are in the middle of a deep

freeze, but lucky for me I get to go to Maui for

a couple of weeks. Yeah!

The AGM is happening March 5 and thus

begins another year for the Board. I would like

to take this opportunity to thank those

individuals who were willing to let their name

stand for election. I am really looking forward

to working with them as well as the returning

members. It is going to be another exciting

year!

Mark your calendars and plan on attending

the AGM. It is your opportunity to learn what

is happening at SEESA, meet your board

members and

socialize over wine

and cheese after

the meeting. What

is not to like about

such an event!

Hope to see all of

you there!

Kim’s Korner To fob or not to fob—that is the question. The answer to this question is

Always Fob! I have just completed the City of Edmonton Operations Grant for SEESA. It is so important that we have accurate data to show how many people come for coffee, dinner, lunch, programs, etc. It may seem small or not important to you; however, to the grants it is very important. We have this great system (that we pay a lot of $$ for) and yet we had to manually calculate club and class attendance, due to less then 100% buy in for fobbing in. It may be a little late as a New

Years resolution, but if you could, please try to fob in your time at SEESA every time. Thank you so much. Thank you to all who took the time to complete the Kitchen survey. With the results we will know how to better serve our membership and the guests that use our food services. We are busy compiling all the great comments and then the Kitchen staff and I will review and make changes and updates to current service. Stay tuned!

We held a couple of really fun events—the Sock Hop was a great time as around 70 folks gathered and danced for 4 hours straight with no breaks! We will have another Sock Hop for Pride Week—please plan on joining us. We also hosted a 1960 Vintage Fashion Show. Around 170 very stylish guests attended, watched, and enjoyed

yummy dessert. These two events are part of the Strategic Plan to host at least 2 new events per year.

Thanks to everyone for your volunteer work, it is greatly appreciated.

Wear your years with pride. Like a badge of honour, for you have conquered. You have thrived. You have survived. - Anonymous

SEESA’s

Annual General Meeting Tuesday March 5, 2019

2:00 pm in the Gym

All regular members are invited to attend.

We will be presenting Bylaw changes, electing

new board members, and awarding two

volunteers Honorary Lifetime Memberships

for their dedicated service to our centre.

Help us celebrate them.

A Wine and Cheese will follow for all in

attendance.

Help SEESA shine brightly. Please donate towards a light. Our goal is to raise $10,000

and with every $100 raised a light will be lit on a string around the front foyer.

We invite all our members to give as you are able. Every little bit helps.

Our Hearts will be converted to Shamrocks for March and then flowers for the spring.

This year we will raise funds

for an upgraded

announcement and phone system at the centre.

Centre Funding and Swiping into MySeniorCentre

Every year we go through the process of requesting funding to keep our centre open and

active. The way you use MySeniorCenter (MSC) affects our centre’s funding!

Programming must supply the total number of times a class or club takes place and the

total number of members that participate.

When there are discrepancies the amounts need to be hand counted. This year, the

numbers available in MSC are very different than the actual numbers counted manually.

When you are selecting your daily activities watch the “name” you are clicking on—clubs

and classes have similar names.

There were classes that had members fobbed in but hadn’t paid for the class (they were

meant to scan into a club) so a lot of unnecessary research took place to see why they

hadn’t paid but were attending classes.

There were clubs that had only a few people fobbed in or didn’t have anyone fobbed in at

all (when I know that many more attend).

We keep reminding you about fobbing into MSC every time you come to SEESA and

this process proved to me how much we actually use this information (not only for

our funders but for our own programming purposes).

I appeal to each and every one of you—PLEASE fob into MSC every time you come

into the building regardless what it’s for. Your efforts will ensure we have the

correct information to send our funders.

Peggy Hansen, Program Manager

Forgot your keys? No Problem. Most members have attached their MySeniorCenter fob to their keychain for easy access and some prefer to carry the fob separately. Either way, on occasion, it is forgotten and you may end up at the centre without it. Don’t fear! You can still sign into MySeniorCenter by touching the screen and selecting “Sign In I Don’t Have My Card” button on the upper right hand side. It will then bring up a screen which ask you to spell your first name followed by a screen to enter your phone number (including the area code).

Et voilà! You are into the system to select your activities for the day. Of course scanning your fob would be way faster, but it is good to know you can still help us out with the statistics when you don’t have it with you.

Federal Minister of Seniors, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, toured SEESA on Saturday, February 9. She met with a group of Staff, Board Members, and Volunteers to get a better sense of what her Ministry could do for our members and the senior population in general. We are very privileged to have had the Minister’s ear for some of the issues we brought forward such as accessibility, transportation, and use of seniors centre resources for music licensing.

After having been here for a few months, I finally get the pleasure of introducing myself. My name is Melanie and I am the new Volunteer Engagement Coordinator. While I have been here since July in a contract position, I recently received the offer of having the job as an employee and started January 21. A bit about me: My education background is in biological sciences and accounting. It’s funny how often education doesn’t lead to what you end up doing. That said, volunteering is something that is important to me and I do regularly as a Guider with the 75th Brownies that meet Tuesday nights here at SEESA as well as helping out wherever I can, regardless of the organization. Volunteering is in my values and is a natural state for me. I am making an attempt to get to know everyone by their name and what they do (or could do) as volunteers. When you see me in the halls, please stop me and say hello. If you are interested in starting or continuing to volunteer, please fill out an opportunity form. If you see something that needs to be done that isn’t on the form, stop by the front desk to let me know and I will help you create the position. If you want to be involved, I want you to be involved. Melanie Hansen Volunteer Engagement Coordinator

BY THE NUMBERS: In January, 1918 hours were fobbed in by 147 volunteers. Definitely a slow month around this place but understandable after the hustle of the Christmas season.

JANUARY VOLUNTEER DRAW Cheryl Doty Pete Wilson

Don’t forget to scan your fob and enter your hours when you are here to volunteer to be

automatically entered to be part of our monthly draw.

THIS MONTH’S FEATURE GROUP Our Kitchen Volunteers are with us everyday, always ready with a pot of coffee, a warm meal, and a friendly smile. They donated a total of 275 hours of their time in January. We are doing our kitchen survey right now and one comment that has come up again and again is how wonderful and friendly they are. I want to extend our appreciation to these wonderful volunteers and let them know how much we appreciate all they do.

Have a coffee, meet other seniors, and join in some fun activities like playing cards, watching a film, listening to a guest speaker, or learning about resources in the Library or in your community.

Everyone welcome!

February Birthday Party

The SEESAtones had everyone feeling happy and we enjoyed the birthday cake as well.

18 birthday celebrants and their guests came out for the party. Executive Director, Kim Buehler, was on hand to award “Breakfast Bill” Gillespie his Lifetime Membership. Bill may have retired from volunteering in the Kitchen, but he is still training members how to use the equipment

in the Fitness Centre… at 90! Well done, Bill!

Thanks to the Birthday Committee and, especially, Beth Turnbull who stepped in to fill the shoes of committee lead Sylvia Dickson while she was away. Our Birthday volunteers joining Beth were: Pat Goshko, Ollie Reid, Vi Ponton, Iris Hrushchak, and Jean Shannon.
