A Member of KHTM since: Feb. 2011

(although I've been a member of other club since 2006)

You can have dinner with any person dead or alive, who would it

be and why?: I want to have dinner with my mentor who passed away couple

of years ago. I'd like to meet him and comfort him to overcome his hardship. I

regretted it so much that I couldn't do that when he was alive.

I hope his doing well up there.

It’s a lazy Sunday night, what are you watching on TV?:

Nowadays, I am watching American series called 'Mentalist' on internet TV.

I like the main character Simon Baker in it. For Korean ones, I'm catching up on

'49days', kind of a fantasy story. The story is very unrealistic, just like comic

books which is why I like it more. Because I like comic books, too.

If you could take a time machine and relive any moment in your

life what would it be?: I'd like to go back to my university years. When I

look back, I don't really think I spend a happy hour. I was always stressed about

getting good grades even though my grade wasn't good. If I go back, I'd like to

enjoy my life more and care less about the grades, Now I know that experiencing

new things and making more friends is much more important than studying.

How did you originally hear about KH Toastmasters?:

I've been a member of Seoul TM and I've visited KHTM a few times before.

Last year, I decided to take a class on the meeting day. So I've searched other

clubs near and I found out that the people and the culture of KHTM is great,

So I came to KHTM and became an official member.

What is your biggest improvement since joining KHTM?:

I'm getting better but I'm still very shy. When I make a speech , I get really

nervous or sometimes get over excited and forget what I'm suppose to do.

I'm still trying to improve on that. Also, I'd like to be a good team player

that's why I've wanted the VP membership job. I think people is the best souce

of learning. I hope to learn more from them, and help them vice versa to learn

something from me.

Each month we take a look back at the

first speech of a new KHTM member and

congratulate them on breaking the ice.

Speaker: Bob Kienzle

Title: “Nice to Meet You Again”

Date: April 5th 2011

Summary: 3 years after giving his original Ice-Breaker at

KHTM, and 6 short months after achieving DTM status, Bob

Kienzle re-introduced himself to his home club. He told the story

about a motorcycle trip in Bali and a trip to a temple, which helped

him understand more about himself. He ended the speech with

"Roll the Dice," a poem by Charles Bukowski.

In each edition we highlight a stand out

speech from the past month. Here’s our pick:

Speaker: Papa Arkhurst

Title: “The One Percenters”

Date: April 12th, 2011

Manual: The Competent Communicator Manual

Project Info: Speech# 10 / Project# 10 / Inspire your Audience

Summary: Papa finished his world record pace through the CC

manual with this gem or an inspirational speech at KHTM on April

12th. He appealed to the audience as part of the 1% Club; the

percentage of people destined to lead others. It was an

inspirational message that made everybody take notice.

Tips on Using HumorUsing humor can be very difficult during a speech. There is nothing worse

than a joke falling flat. But there is nothing that can connect faster than a

well told joke or funny story.

Here are some tips on using humor in a speech:

Be yourself. Think about what types of humor you appreciate, then create a

library of such items. Don’t like jokes? Try a humorous anecdote or a witty

observation from your own life.

It’s OK to be mildly amusing, rather than eye-dabbingly funny.

Use humor sparingly, like a spice. At first, try using a humorous opener to

your speech. A quote or offhand observation can be a good icebreaker.

Keep it relevant to your speech topic.

Keep it clean! Humor is supposed to make people feel good – not

embarrassed, insulted or offended.

Make it readily identifiable as humor. But in case no one laughs, prepare

a comment in advance or just move on.

Keep it appropriate to the audience and the situation.

Self-effacing humor is safe –a little of it goes a long way. The audience

would rather hear about the time you fell on your face than when you won

the race.

Work on your delivery. Practice using vocal variety and gestures.

Timing is everything! Pause before the punch line.
