editoriaLPREPARING FOR THE GOOD TIMES

Kopenhagen Fur has the simple philosophy that we use good times to prepare for the hard and conversely use hard times to prepare for the good. On the face of it this sounds like a very defensive strategy, but it is not. We live in a globalized world and there-by in a still more competitive world. Even though companies’ framework conditions vary significantly from country to country all companies are met with considerable demands for efficiency. It goes without saying that in good times, i.e. times with rising turnover, high prices and good profits the demand for efficiency is not as large as in hard times. Some companies use good times for growth; others use them for consolida-tion. Kopenhagen Fur has used the good times to prepare for the hard realizing that Danish fur breeders and auction house are subject to framework condi-tions that mean that we must accept very high production costs. You can live with this in good times, but it can be fatal in hard times. The demand for efficiency is consequently extraordinarily heavy for a Danish company, but efficiency is not enough to neutralise the extremely high cost level in Denmark. However, efficiency is a prerequisite for creating sufficient earnings in good times, so that we are able to invest in labour-saving technology, ad-vanced production statistical systems and breeding programmes. The result of these initiatives is that today Danish breeders are able to produce a collection that meets the need of the market and thereby gives the breeders a considerable additional price

when comparing with the more conven-tional production. Similarly, we have just started using an advanced machine in our production. The machine can sort the mink skins in colour and clarity in one process and has the capacity to sort 7,000 skins per hour. Today direct labour costs for sort-ing one mink skin are approximately 35% lower than 15 years ago in spite of the fact that in the same period time wages have more than doubled. Now is the time to prepare for good times. We will therefore during the coming years speed up the automation of various processes. Among others we will intro-

duce a newly developed packing and trans-port concept. The investment programme is the most ambitious in the history of the company and will ensure that Kopenhagen Fur – also when times change – will be a dynamic and creative business partner. euroPean fur breeding – winning the battLe

Within a 10 year period the European fur farming business will be widely accepted by politicians and the general population of Europe. A transparent business, focus on animal welfare and strong cooperation between the membership countries are the means to achieve the goal.

Fur is on the European agenda. In fact, fur is on several European agendas. A ban on Canadian seal products is likely to have been adopted by the time you read this and the very existence of a mink farm-ing industry is being debated in large fur breeder nation Holland – a debate that missed the deadline of this issue of Fur News. In Denmark, fox farming faces a po-litically motivated full stop and in a number of other European countries, different po-litical agendas constitute a serious threat to the local fur farming businesses. With that many battles being fought on so many different frontiers, the future of European fur farming might look dark, but that is not the case: - In order to win the battle you have a number of years and a number of battles to fight. Some you’ll win and some you’ll lose, but we are going to win the big war, says Francois Hossay, since 2007 the Managing Director of the European Fur Breeders Association (EFBA) and thus the

European fur breeders’ front woman in Brussels.

better tiMes aheadFrancois Hossay doesn’t hesitate to put up a time frame of 5-10 years for brighter times to shine on the fur farmers of Europe. Within that period EFBA will be a well respected collaborator to the legislators in Brussels and the fur farming business

of Europe will have a transparent profile with large focus on animal welfare. In the core, Francois Hossay says, the fur breeders’ case is very good, because the animal welfare, which is always the point of discussion, is both well documented and implemented in the laws of the Euro-pean countries. The problem is that the fur breeders in Europe never stood side by side in communicating the message and at the same time a very active animal rights lobby screamed their message out at the top of their lungs. - To hide is a bad strategy. It doesn’t work if you bury your head in the sand, the EFBA-Director says. Together with a new EFBA board elected at the General Assembly last year, Francois Hossay has formulated the strategy that within 10 years the European fur farming sector will be released from its undeserved reputation.

today. We need to be proactive, proac-tive, proactive, Francois Hossay says and explains that the strategy rests on two pillars. One pillar represents the various political battles for the fur farming industry that take place at national levels in Europe at the moment. These battles are still to be fought – and won, to the largest possible extent. The other pillar in the strategy con-cerns taking initiative and being abreast of legislation initiatives. In this case, being proactive means to be seen and heard and understood by the politicians and make sure they really understand how much effort the European fur breeders put into the animal welfare. It also means to have prepared facts and arguments in advance and not far into a legislation process. For instance EFBA was present when legislation on animal transportation was in progress, not because animal transporta-tion constitutes any particular problem to the fur farming sector, but because, it is

important to be present so that everybody will notice that the European fur breed-ers are serious and have a voice when EU legislation is closing in on their business.

strong teaMwork Being ahead of the legislation work re-quires cooperation between the member-ship countries, a task that has proven difficult in the past, but now seems to have found a common ground. - EFBA’s strength is our ability to work together. The teamwork in the board is incredibly strong, says fur breeder and chairman of EFBA Knud Vest who has deep confidence in the long-term strategy for the European fur farming sector. Trans-parency is the key to acknowledgement, because European fur breeders really have nothing to hide, a view he shares with Francois Hossay: - There are so many good things to say about European fur breeding. That is why we’ll win the battle, she says.

auction 2009 in the usual period from 12 to 15 December. Consequently, Kopenhagen Fur will arrange the December auction 2009 from 20 to 21 December, inspection from 18 December.

mink production 2009

The number of breeding minks in Denmark has

dropped by approximately 4%.

Lower prices at the auctions this season have

made mink farmers reduce production and yet

again it has affected the mutation types Pearl,

White, Sapphire, Pastel and Cross mink the

most. The number of Black mink has also gone

down, whereas Brown and Glow are almost

unchanged. The number of Mahogany mink is

increasing, but not as much as Silverblue that

has seen the largest increase in number.

In total there are now 2.7 million breeding

females in Denmark distributed among by 1,400

mink farms. The number of farms is down by

9%, but on average each farm now has 1,800

breeding females compared to 1,754 last year.

Kopenhagen Fur’s spectacular stand at the CHIC fashion fair in China this spring won much attention from visitors. They were amazed by the uniqueness as well as the creative concept behind. Retailers and representatives from fashion companies around China rushed into Kopenhagen Fur Garden to get a closer look at the fur spring: - This stand really gives us great inspira-tion not only in how to use fur, but also how to present fur in our store, Mr. Pan from Harbin Gui Fu Ren Fur Plaza said. The creative combination of colourful in high quality fur, tailor-made carpet and garden furniture with a strong Danish touch impressed the visitors. During the fair more than 20 media reporters visited Kopenhagen Fur’s rep-resentatives at the stand for an interview. Kopenhagen Fur’s ambition was to show in how many ways the material can be used in a close collaboration between fur and fashion – and succeed. Contact to over 80 Chinese fashion companies and around 50 fashion retailers was made dur-ing the fair. The spring garden was Kopenhagen Fur’s first launch at CHIC.

FACTS

CHIC is organized by China National Garment As-

sociation and is the biggest and one of the most

well-reputed fairs in Asia. It is a platform for both

fashion companies and fashion retailers as well

as other related players in the fashion industry,

such as designers, fashion research institutes,

branding consultants etc. This year, over 800

exhibitors in the garment industry from over

21 different countries occupied the more than

100,000 square metres.

An ocean of possibilities - a wave of news. This is the slogan of Lotti Mauro. He visited the April auction at Kopenhagen Fur, where he also showed his newest system for enhancing fur. A technique that saves the furrier much time and therefore rationalizes the process of enhancing fur. The system,

“Olivettatura”, consists of making staggered cuts on fur skins in order to insert round pieces on other materials, or by “blowing” the fur between the splits to obtain a double fur. A few seasons back, Lotti Mauro discovered one of Kopenhagen Studio’s designs where circles of fur where cut out and placed on a leather clothing. But the Italian furrier thought that the hairs were damaged by the knife, when the cutting was done. The product development manager from Kopenhagen Studio, Thomas Andersen reacted: - I asked him to invent an easier way to cut out round pieces of fur to use on other materials without damaging the hairs, and immediately he caught the idea. We had a good dialogue and after some time, he came up with a whole new system of cutting, stretching and drilling, he tells.

a tiMe saverThe new system implies three things. One

of them is a spiked plate to put the fur skin on. On the top of it comes a plate of plexi-glass with forms in different shapes to cut out the skin. For that Lotti Mauro developed some knives with a row of 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 small blades and a plastic handle. If you need to cut circles of fur to put on another material you use a round shaped knife on a drilling machine. But if the cutting is done to widen and lengthen the fur skin, either horizontally or vertically, you will use a knife with more blades that fit the holes in the plexi glass plates. And voilá! No damaging of the fur hairs or drawing and cutting of every single line anymore: - You save a lot of time and it does not need to be a furrier who does the cutting anymore because of the pattern in the plate, the inventor Lotti Mauro says. Thomas Andersen from Kopenhagen Studio agrees: - You need not draw the lines by yourself anymore and you are making more sections at a time. It rationalizes the whole process and saves you for a lot of time, he says. Lotti Mauro also points out that a safe hand was needed to cut out exact shapes before this new system was invented. This way it is more accessible. The time aspect

is decisive for any making of fur garments and the effectiveness of the production. Moreover, the weight of the fur garment is reduced. With this system of enhancing it is possible to reduce the weight of a fur vest to only 1.5 kilos. At Kopenhagen Studio, the workshop of Kopenhagen Fur, the furriers now use Lotti Mauro’s system. When he was done developing it, he gave them a tool kit, and the Kopenhagen Fur key ring shaped as a heart in fur is an example of a product made by means of the Lotti Mauro

- When I had graduated from the Royal College of Art in London I spent six months answering enquiries from magazines and press, Soren Bach says. Since he graduated in 2007 things have been escalating. His colourful final examination collection “Kartoon Kouture” with hats and a motor cycle helmet in fur from Kopenhagen Fur has been shown in magazines like Italian, Spanish, Russian and English Vogue, DANSK, I:D and POP. He was surprised to see the great attention the collection attracted. Now he has returned to Copenhagen and to his cooperation with Kopenhagen Studio. In central Copenhagen, Soren Bach and his business partner are busy putting the finishing touches to the premises that will house a hairdressing saloon and a workshop. With 22 years as a hairdresser, and since 2003 as a hairstylist in photo shoots, fashion shows and commercials, Soren Bach now wants to dedicate his time to hats. After working creatively with hair for many years, he felt there was no longer elbowroom for his wild hair constructions in a commercial industry: - My hairstyles seemed to become too avant-garde for the fashion industry. I think I scared away some of the more commercial customers, Soren Bach says about the period before he decided to follow his inner sculptor and started studying at The Royal College of Art, where he created his first collection of fur hats in cooperation with Kopenhagen Fur.

hats with attentionThe 41 year old Dane has built a large network throughout the years in the fashion industry. Recently, he was contacted by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London that wanted to exhibit one of his hats in the exhibition HATS: An anthology by Stephen Jones. Now his pompon hat, worn by Icelandic singer Björk at one of her shows, is exhibited among other spectacular hats at the highly estimated museum: - It has been a fantastic experience for me to study at the Royal College of Art, then graduate and finally have a hat from my final examination collection exhibited at the V&A. That makes me proud, Soren Bach says.

Twice he has made wigs for the window display of the exclusive London store Selfridges and the artists Grace Jones and Björk have worn his hats. At the moment, Soren Bach is working on a “citycap” in swakara for Martin Gore, a member of the English grandeur band, Depeche Mode. The hat is much more toned down than the hats that Soren Bach is known for in the public.

the Making of a hatEven though Soren Bach thinks the attention to his hats is habit-forming, it is still the work with the hats that he cares most about. He never starts drawing a hat to make it after words, he does the opposite. He cuts, clips, shapes and colours the skins. Then he turns to the drawing block, letting the lines create a collection and then returns to the material: - Having finished a time-consuming job and then see your hat exposed in public; that process is what is most important to me, Soren Bach explains. For Soren Bach, who started at a hairdresser school when he was only 16, making a fur hat is free scope without any limitations. He finds help for the different furrier techniques at Kopenhagen Studio, but still he uses ideas from his abilities as a hairdresser in his work with fur: - Basically, fur is like hair. But unlike a hairstyle, a fur hat is not damaged if you lie on it sleeping. It does not perish that easily and that is a satisfaction in itself, he finishes.

ABOuT ThE prOJECTKopenhagen Fur’s Charity Organization’s

objective is to support needy children abroad.

The organization has existed since 2003. The

majority of Kopenhagen Fur’s employees support

the organization economically. Moreover, money

is collected by lotteries a.o.

For the past three years the organization has

supported children in the slums outside Namibia’s

capital, Windhoek. The money is mainly spend

to improve the conditions for the children by

providing food, improving the sanitary conditions

and building school facilities.

The profit from the gambling tables at the Las Vegas party during the September auction 2008 was ear-marked for a trip to the ocean for some of the children at the kindergar-tens in Namibia that Kopenhagen Fur supports. 94 of the 6 years old children took the trip to the African coast together with their teachers. The trip lasted for three days and the children got the chance to play in the ocean and visit an aquarium. 98 per cent of the children and teachers had never seen the ocean! And most of the children had never been on a bus or a train.

Models in the show also wore styles from Kopenhagen Fur’s design.n competition The Golden Fur Pin.

His target was clear: this April auction’s swakara and mink top lots, and he got them both. Mr. Oleg Dudenko from the fur company TM Duet in Ukraine bought the Black Velvet female top lot at 1,600 DKK. Mr. Oleg Dudenko of TM Duet and his wife Liana smiled, when they received a bunch of flowers and applause in the auction room. After intense bidding, TM Duet was the happy owner of the mink top lot of the April auction, Black Velvet female. Before the auction, Mr. Dudenko decided to buy the swakara and mink top lots of this April auction and he got them both. This is the first time Mr. Dudenkos buys top lots, and he is especially happy about these; - In two days we are opening our new fur factory with an official certification in Ukraine. Therefore, we would like some extra beautiful skins to show at our opening, he tells. He has had his own fur company TM Duet for 16 years and now he expands. For the past 6 years he has been buy-ing skins at Kopenhagen Fur and since then his production has expanded. In 2003, when he began buying at Kopenha-gen Fur, he had 11 employees. Now he has 40. Mr. Dudenko’s wife, Liana will now have two brand-new fur coats of the finest quality. It is not only the swakara top lot that is being transformed to a new coat for her. Mr. Dudenko also wants to create one out of the Black Velvet female top lot: - I do not mind at all, Liana laughs. The couple from Ukraine returned to their new factory with two exceptional lots.

koPenhagen fur’s new dreaMy fashion stand

At MIFUR in Milan in March, Kopenhagen Fur presented a new stand concept where the visitors could explore a dreamy and artistic universe. Behind the stand is interior decorator David Thulstrup, who for months has worked to find the right way to present Kopenhagen Fur at future fashion fairs. With the image of Kopenhagen Fur at the back of his mind, he created an artistic and high quality stand that is far above others. The combination of a soft specially made carpet from Ege Carpets with sketches of soft clouds, old rose flowers, and the few selected fur garments on show made the stand exclusive and almost dreamy. The stand in Milan was created as an experiment and the intention is to make a more permanent stand for use when Kopenhagen Fur is presented at fashion fairs around the world in the future.

Kopenhagen Fur will be offering as many as 5 million mink skins at its fourth auction in the selling season 2008/09.

The offering will consist of the whole spectrum of colour types including the small mink types, Violet, Blue Iris and Jaguar. As the offering at the September auction will primarily consist of mink skins in the main types, June will be the last chance for buy-ing quality skins in the smaller types.

All four quality labels, Purple, Platinum, Bur-gundy and Ivory as well as lowgrades will be on offer. Also, this season’s collection of extra short nap mink will be offered.
