    smoking is a two-part process that involves:1) overcoming your physical need for nico-tine, and

    2) breaking your smoking habit.

    NicoDerm CQhelps smokers quit by reduc-ing nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Many

    What Youre Up Against.Smoking is addictive in two ways. Your needfor nicotine has become both physical andmental. You must overcome both addictions

    to stop smoking. So while NicoDerm CQwilllessen your bodys craving for nicotine, youvegot to want to quit smoking to overcome themental dependence on cigarettes. Onceyouve decided that youre going to quit, itstime to get started. But first, there are someimportant warnings you should consider.

    Keep the phone numbers of supportivefriends and family members handy.

    Keep a record of your quitting process.In the event that you slip, immediately

    stop smoking and resume your quitattempt by using the Nicoderm CQpatch. If you smoke at all, write downwhat you think caused the slip.

    Put together an Emergency Kit thatincludes items that will help take your

    mind off occasional urges to smoke.You might include cinnamon gum orlemon drops to suck on, a relaxing cas-sette tape, and something for yourhands to play with, like a smooth rock,rubber band, or small metal balls.

    Set aside some small rewards, like a newmagazine or a gift certificate from yourfavorite store, which youll give yourself

    after passing difficult hurdles. Think now about the times when you

    most often want a cigarette, and thenplan what else you might do instead o

    smoking. For instance, you might plantake your coffee break in a new locatior take a walk right after dinner, soyou wont be tempted to smoke.

    How NicoDermCQWorks.

    Do not smoke even when you are notwearing the patch.Remove the used patch and put on a newpatch at the same time every day. Applyingthe patch at about the same time each day(first thing in the morning, for instance) willhelp you remember when to put on a newpatch. Do not leave the same NicoDermCQpatch on for more than 24 hoursbecause it may irritate your skin andbecause it loses strength after 24 hours.

    Do not use NicoDerm CQcontinuously formore than 10 weeks (8 weeks for peoplewho smoke 10 or less cigarettes per day).How to apply a NicoDerm CQ patch.1. Do not remove the NicoDerm CQ patch

    from its sealed protective pouch until you

    are ready to use it. NicoDermCQ

    patch-es will lose nicotine to the air if you storethem out of the pouch.

    2. Choose a non-hairy, clean, dry area of skDo not put a NicoDerm CQ patch on skthat is burned, broken out, cut, or irritatein any way. Make sure your skin is free olotion and soap before applying a patch.

    3. Take patch out of thepouch. Save pouch foruse at time of disposal.A clear, protective linercovers the sticky back side of the NicoDeCQ patch the side that will be put o

With the sticky back side facing yopull half the liner away from the NicoDerCQ patch starting at the middle slit, as showin the illustration above. Hold the NicoDerCQ patch at one of the outside edges (toucthe sticky side as little as possible), and puoff the other half of the protective liner.

    Place the liner back in the pouch. Savepouch for disposing of the patch after use.4. Immediately apply the sticky side of the

    NicoDerm CQ patch to your skin. Pressthe patch firmly on your skin with theheel of your hand for at least 10seconds. Make sure it stickswell to your skin, especiallyaround the edges.

    5. Wash your hands when youhave finished applying the

    NicoDerm CQ patch. Nicotineon your hands could get intoyour eyes and nose,and cause stinging,redness, or more seriousproblems.

    6. After 24 or 16 hours, remove the patcyou have been wearing. Fold sticky enof used NicoDerm CQ patch togetherReplace in its pouch. Discard where itwill be out of the reach of children anpets. Even used patches have enoughnicotine to poison children and pets.Wash your hands.

    If your NicoDermCQ

    patch comes offwhile wearing.NicoDerm CQ patches generally stick wellto most peoples skin. However, a patchmay occasionally come off. If yourNicoDerm CQ patch falls off during theday, put on a new patch, making sure youselect a non-hairy, non-irritated area of skinthat is clean and dry.If the soap you use has lanolin or moisturiz-ers, the patch may not stick well. Using a dif-ferent soap may help. Body creams, lotionsand sunscreens can also cause problems

    with keeping your patch on. Do not applcreams or lotions to the place on your skwhere you will put the patch.

    Disposing of NicoDerm CQ patches.Fold the used patch in half by folding thesticky ends together. Replace in its pouchDiscard where it will be out of the reach

    If your skin reacts to the NicoDerm CQpatch.

    When you first put on a NicoDerm CQpatch, mild itching, burning, or tingling is

    normal and should go away within an hour.After you remove a NicoDerm CQ patch,the skin under the patch might be somewhatred. Your skin should not stay red for morethan a day after removing the patch. Stopuse and ask a doctor if skin redness causedby the patch does not go away after fourdays, or if your skin swells, or you get arash. Do not put on a new patch.Storage Instructions.Keep each NicoDerm CQ patch inits protective pouch, unopened, untilyou are ready to use it, because the

    patch will lose nicotine to the air ifits outside the pouch.

    Store NicoDerm CQ patches at 20-25C(68-77F) because they are sensitive to heRemember, the inside of your car can reactemperatures much higher than this. A sligyellowing of the sticky side of the patch is

    Keep busy on your quit day. Exercise. Goto a movie. Take a walk. Get togetherwith friends.

    Figure out how much money youll saveby not smoking. Most ex-smokers cansave more than $1,000 a year on the priceof cigarettes alone.

    Write down what you will do with themoney you save.

    Know your high risk situations and planahead how you will deal with them.

    Visit your dentist and have your teethcleaned to get rid of the tobacco stains.

    Right after Quitting:

    During the first few days after youvestopped smoking, spend as much time as

    possible at places where smoking is noallowed.

    Drink large quantities of water and frujuices.

    Try to avoid alcohol, coffee and otherbeverages you associate with smoking Remember that temporary urges to

    smoke will pass, even if you dont smoa cigarette.

    Keep your hands busy with something

    like a pencil or a paper clip. Find other activities that help you relawithout cigarettes. Swim, jog, take awalk, play basketball.

    What to Expect.The First Few Days.Your body is now coming back into bal-ance. During the first few days after you

    stop smoking, you might feel edgy andnervous and have trouble concentrating.You might get headaches, feel dizzy and alittle out of sorts, feel sweaty or have stom-ach upsets. You might even have troublesleeping at first. These are typical nicotine

    withdrawal symptoms that will go awaywith time. Your smokers cough will get

    worse before it gets better. But dont worrthats a good sign. Coughing helps clear ttar deposits out of your lungs.

    After A Week Or Two.
