Hard to believe it but Summer is here. I don't know about you but I am not ready to start the second half of the year - especially this soon. It seems like 2017 just started and now it is half gone. I guess I will just have to make good use of the time that is left and enjoy some of the events and holidays in July like Independence Day on the 4th, National Ice Cream Day (16th), National Hot Dog Day (19th), and of course World UFO Day on the 2nd.

The month of July at the Senior Center is busy with lots of events and activities. One event we all look forward to is the "Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon" that is being held on July 19th. It is a time when all the Center volunteers get together to celebrate each other’s individual contributions to the success of the Senior Center. Without the many dedicated volunteers we would just be a building and not a place that seems like our second home.

A BIG "Thank You" to all the volunteers! Volunteers are always needed so if you have some extra time you would like to put to good use, stop by the office and find out where your talents could be best used. Enjoy the summer, have fun and be safe.

Notes from Madeline…July 2017 As most already know we received some very sad news about our site manager in the kitchen, Kolleen Dorko who passed

unexpectedly in June. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her son, Vinny and her family. Wendy wants everyone at the center to know that she is doing better every day. Getting stronger and ready to soon start

chemo. She thanks everyone for their cards, calls, texts with prayers, concern and positive thoughts. “That is what gives me the

strength and energy and to improve. My love to all. Enjoy the summer. Wendy” The Garden Walk was a success, as always! It is National Ice Cream Month and we are having an Ice Cream Social on July 27th. Make sure you sign up in advance

so we can plan accordingly as you will be making your own Sundae. There will be a couple flavors of ice cream and plenty of toppings to make it special just for you! The cost to you is $1 Advisory Committee will take care of the balance. Let’s enjoy summertime!

Chorus and Writers Corner will be on summer vacation for July & August. Bridges Program will be on vacation for month of July. A BIG THANK YOU to Sue Layland and all our members who participate in the Bridges Program who spend lots of time on Mondays separating, sizing and folding clothes for those in need.

In the month of August, the date will be announced, we are planning “Personal Photo Collage”. The Keyport Middle school students will come and teach our members who would like to participate, the art of photo collage as they create their own personal photo collage from re-copied pictures. Choose your own theme, what makes you feel good/happy (I am doing one for a friend that just celebrated a special birthday and I will give it to them as a reminder of a fun night out). the appropriate recognition that all collections deserve.

I have some of your usual collections: copper pennies, state quarters, and cookbooks. However,

the collection which gives me the most joy and a chance to reminisce, is my collection of the numerous

and varied gifts that were presented to me by my intermediate school students in grades 6, 7 and 8

over the thirty plus years that I worked as a teacher and afterwards as a school librarian.

There are the Christmas gifts and the souvenir gifts brought back from vacations to exotic

places from those times when families would take their child out of school when school was still in

session. Then as the end of the school year approached, there were the parting gifts from students

who wanted to show their appreciation.

Some of my favorite gifts? The handmade Christmas wreath made of bowtie pasta painted

green and embellished with a bright red bow. It was made at home with loving care by Michael, a

particularly helpful student who was quite appreciative of the library tasks entrusted to him. Over

and above his normal duties, Michael was instrumental in starting our library newsletter as we

entered the computer age.

Also, there are the store-bought gifts: the snowmen placemats from Freddy who became my

“right-hand man” when it came to unjamming the printer and hooking up the laptop to the

Smartboard which would be used throughout the day to teach library skills lessons. Then there are

the black driving gloves from Randi, a lovely soft-spoken girl who was phenomenal at re-shelving

returned books, even the non-fiction.

Finally, there is my all-time favorite gift from a student. It is a framed picture of a man reading

a newspaper, superimposed with an original poem written especially for me. It was brought in by the

grandfather of a former student who had already graduated. The grandfather was a substitute

teacher at our school who was called on a pretty regular basis. He often brought me “Greetings” from

Ian, his grandson. Ian had severe hearing loss and was written about in medical journals and other

periodicals since he had been an early recipient of a cochlea implant. In addition to this, he had

Tourette’s syndrome. Ian had developed a fondness for the library. Along with his Aide, he was

entrusted with collecting money at our book fairs. This responsibility gave him an elevated status

among his peers which did much to boost his self-esteem. His gift, as he explained within it, is a

picture to represent himself when he grows up. His original poem really tugs at my heart. It

expresses his sadness upon hearing that I had been absent from school for an extended period during

which time I was being treated for the loss of vision in my right eye. He, as a graduate, was the only

student to be privy to this information.

What makes my collection of gifts from students so special are not the gifts, themselves, but the

good memories they help keep alive. These pleasant memories remind me of the importance of always

trying to find something good in everyone.

Governor Christie has authorized all County Clerks to provide

Veteran’s ID photo cards to any veteran that registers their DD214 with

the County Clerk’s office. The card proves the person is a U.S. Veteran

and the card can be used for many discounts made available from the

business community. They are available at the County Clerk’s offices

in Freehold and in Neptune at the Monmouth County Connection.
