PSNH has a vision of New Hampshire’s future in which energy

rates remain low for its customers, renewable energy grows and

everyone has the power they need. That vision led us to build

Northern Wood Power, a generating station that produces the

electricity New Hampshire needs using wood chips, thereby eliminating

thousands of tons of emissions each year. Not just because our

customers live here, but because we do too. Planning today for New

Q SOCIAL NETWORKING FOR SUSTAINABILITY • There’s no denying that social networking has revolutionized how we communicate and manage information, but the struggle to define the role it plays in today’s business and economy continues. hile communicating with your key stakeholders is part of our job, how do you choose where to spend your limited time and resources? Social networking presents opportunities to harness better and smarter relationships with stakeholders, but what does that term even mean? How do you use it? Why and where does it work? Which are the best tools to connect you with the right people? Join us as we explore ways that online platforms can combine with offline actions to bring powerful results. • Sponsor ~ Changents

Q EXPAND CAPACITY, IMPROVE EFFECTIVENESS AND MAKE IT SUSTAINABLE • In today’s uncertain economy, instead of joining the many businesses that are “just trying to hold on” and weather the storm, take the steps now to ensure a sustainable future. We will explore the connections between personal effectiveness, organizational alignment and increased productivity and capacity. The facilitators will lead you through a series of exercises and inquiries that will engage you in creating sustainable value for yourself and your organization. • Sponsor ~ Print Savvy, Inc.

Q MEASURING THE FINANCIAL IMPACT OF SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES • This workshop is intended to provide participants with some basic steps that can be taken to establish metrics on sustainability initiatives, insight to important initiative qualities that are not easily measured and some decision rules for anticipating the financial impact of sustainability initiatives. The workshop will start with short presentations from each of the panelists followed by interactive conversation involving everyone in the room.• Sponsor ~ Grappone Collision Center

Q SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING: A PRACTICAL GUIDE • This session is for companies wishing to report to their constituents about their environ-mental, social and overall sustainability performance, the process of deciding what aspects of their sustainability profile they wish to report on, acquiring the data, and crafting a coherent and appealing message. This panel will explore the practical realities of developing corporate sustainability reports, and provide attendees with some clear guidance for how they can embark on this in their own organizations. • Sponsor ~ Sustainserv, Inc.

Q ALTERNATIVE ENERGY OPTIONS & RESOURCES • This session will explore sources of rebates and grants that can be used to help pay for energy efficiency upgrades or for the purchase of renewable energy equipment using wind, solar, geothermal, hydro, or tidal. We will also take a look at the fast evolving political scene at the State and Federal levels to get a sense of what’s under consideration to help further reduce our reliance on fossil fuel and shrink our collective carbon footprint.• Sponsor ~ NH Electric Co-op

Q SUSTAINABLE COMMUNICATIONS: HOW TO MAKE YOUR MESSAGING GREENER • Sustainability has become a key differentiator of how consumers select products and services. To be credible, your marketing message also needs to “walk the talk.” This session will address how to improve the eco-profile of your communications by providing guidelines and techniques for making your communications greener.Topics in the session include greener print and packaging design, alternative means of conveying your messaging and how to identify and avoid “Greenwashing” in your communications. • Sponsor ~ Image 4

The New Hampshire Institute of Art located inManchester, NH selected Milestone Engineeringand Construction to take on the role ofConstruction Manager for the relocation, renovation and addition to 88 Lowell Street.

The project entails the relocation ofthe original Manchester High Schoolacross the site, the historic restorationof the building into classroom andstudio space, and the construction ofan adjacent six-story addition to houseclassrooms, studios anddormitories.

Milestone didn’t hesitate to select EnviroVantageto take on the abatement and demolitionprocedures.

EnviroVantage took the lead in the project byessentially gutting the entire building. The oldabandoned structure had severe fire damage andalso contained a great deal of asbestos. The EV crews removed all the windows andframes and demolished the interior walls, ceiling and flooring right down to thestructural frame.

The team also demolished the brick addition containing a boiler room and a safe room,as well as the front portico and steps. These were not easy tasks to conquer due to thetight space and closeness of the buildings next door. All materials that could berecycled from the demolition debris were taken care of while the rest was cleaned upappropriately.

Asbestos was present and posed hazards in the ceiling tiles, under the stairs, in theboiler room and pipe insulation in the entire basement area. The necessary containmentwas set up and over 730 linear square feet of asbestos was properly abated anddisposed of by EnviroVantage. The building now passes all asbestos clearance testsand the rest of the contractors have a safe, asbestos-free work zone in which to beginthe building renovation.

The entire structure will be moved forward, closer to the street. This will allow extraspace for the six story addition to be designed with the LEED building standards andconstructed adjacent to the original building. The entire project is scheduled forcompletion in September of 2009.

Coos County leaders look for

creative uses of low-grade wood

BY ELIZABETH PENNEY

A recent study of timber supply in Coos County has come

up with a surprising conclusion: There may not be enough

wood available in the region.

The study, prepared by Landvest as a project of the Coos

County Economic Action Plan, focuses on the availability

of low-grade wood in a 75-mile radius of Berlin.

The study stems from concern about future logging activity

in the Northern Forest, which was spurred by the closure of

Wausau Paper, Groveton Paperboard and the Nexfor Fraser

pulp mill, all heavy consumers of low-grade pulp wood.

Nexfor Fraser alone accounted for 1 million tons annually.
