Sofia Loren

Born : September 20, 1934 in Rome. Sofia grew up in Pozzuoli, near Naples, Italy

An Italian actress, Raised in poverty.

She began her film career in 1951 and came to be regarded as one of the worlds most beautiful women.

Loren won the Best Actress Academy Award for the film Two Women in 1961 and an Academy Honorary Award in 1991. Also an Academy Award for Best Actress, the first major Academy Award for a non-English-language performance and to an Italian actress.

She holds the record for having earned six David di Donatello Awards for Best Actress, the most ever received.

She began her career at age 14 after entering a beauty pageant in 1949 in Naples.

She may have been the sex goddess as an adult, but until the age of 14, she was a skinny child and considered an ugly duckling, nicknamed `The Stick`.

Suffered from stage fright and, therefore, never appeared in a theatrical production.

Often called the "Italian Marilyn Monroe".

The Best Actress Oscar she won for Ciociara.

She became the first actress to win an Academy Award in a foreign language for her role in director Vittorio De Sica's Two Women.

Married producer Carlo Ponti while she was 22 and he was 47.

Married to Carlo Ponti for 50 years until his death in 2007, Loren lives in Geneva, Switzerland.
