My name is Lona Kozik, and I am running a four week course on Keyboard Harmony, beginning on 9th November. I’m a fellow Curious Piano Teacher. I own and operate the Totnes School of Piano in Devon as well as the School of Music Theory. I’ve been teaching piano for 25 years - 17 of those years in Totnes. I also hold post graduate degrees in composition and improvisation, and I taught music theory and composition at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Plymouth University and Dartington College of Arts.
Keyboard Harmony, as the name suggests, is the application of music theory concepts to the keyboard. In this class, we will be playing chord exercises, transposing, improvising, composing and working on quick study skills, all through the lens of harmony. It is this practical approach that I find most exciting, because acquiring the lived experience of harmony in your fingers will lead to the deepest understanding and the greatest transformation that music theory study can offer.
In my own musical studies, I found that working on keyboard harmony skills allowed me to:
• Become a confident sight reader
• Learn music quickly
• Memorise music easily and reliably
• Develop teaching methods
• Enhance musical creativity
