KEY VOCABULARYEvidenceObservations or data to support a statement, hypothesis, or point of view.

Flammabilityhow easily something will burn or ignite, causing fire or combustion.

Reactivitythe rate at which a chemical substance tends to undergo a chemical reaction

ToxicityThe kind of harmful effects caused by a substance.

Trade-offsAn exchange of one thing in return for another. Giving up something that is a benefit or an advantage, in exchange for something that may be more desirable. Trade-offs always involve balancing benefits against risks.

Your answers will vary depending on how important you feel each of the criteria is to your group.

A correct response will include evidence from the ‘Compare Glass Cleaner” table and describe more than one trade-off.

I would buy Product A. I decided to choose this one because it has an 80% cleaning ability, and has the lowest flammability level possible. This means that it will not be as hazardous when it is stored in the warm room next to the boiler. Also, it does not react with bleach, so no one will have to worry about it being stored near the bleach. The bottle can be recycled, which is what the new hospital recycling plan requires.

One of the trade-offs is that its toxicity rating is 1, which means it is slightly toxic. This is not great since the cleaning crew will use it every day.

Your answers will vary. The scent or color may have been a factor in the decision, but most likely this would have been a secondary consideration

You are likely to have listed cleaning ability and price as their top consideration. Other factors that should be considered, given the hospital scenario, are flammability (since it is being stored in a warm room), reactivity (since it is being stored near bleach products), toxicity (since cleaning crews will be using it every day), and the ability to recycle the used container (since the hospital is participating in a recyclingprogram).
