Hey Key Clubbers!

Welcome to the 6oth annual District Educational and

Leadership Conference! This is one of the only times for the

year that we all meet to award outstanding service, learn

new skills and information and also fellowship with other Key

Clubbers. In addition you all have the opportunity to elect

your new district board and regrettably retire the current

District Officers.

This event signifies the end of the District Board’s term,

although I am sure all of us will be sad to see them go, I know

their legacies will live on. To the incoming (2014-2015) district

board, I look forward to working with each of you and I know

you will continue to great things for your district.

Serving as your International Trustee has been more than

wonderful. I have enjoyed each and every moment spent

working with this district, and I have made memories that will

last me a lifetime. I hope this weekend you will all go around

and meet someone new and just have fun celebrating

service! Please feel free to talk to me if you see me and

around and most of all, make the best out of this weekend!

Hello Southwest District Key Clubbers!

Welcome to the 60th annual Southwest District

Convention here in vibrant Albuquerque, NM. We gather

together this weekend to celebrate the end of yet another

wonderful year of service to our homes, schools, and

communities. I hope that you take the time to enjoy

everything this year’s convention and city have to offer.

I challenge all of you to take advantage of every single

day this weekend. After all, we’re only together here for three

days. Let the true Key Clubber inside of you come out and

don’t hold yourself back from meeting other people and from

having a remarkable time. If you allow yourself, you will make

friends from all across the district that you will be in contact

with for weeks, for months, and even for years. Take the time

to share your service ideas, grow as a leader and realize what

we all have in common… our unquenchable thirst for service.

Take the time to listen attentively and ask insightful questions

as you elect your new District Executive Board. This group of

four people will not only guide this district in a positive

direction but also help foster growth for many generations still

to come. Vote wisely and you will help be the catalyst of

another year long legacy.

Personally, DCON is one of my favorite events of the

entire year. From the spirited sessions to the entertaining

speakers to the educational workshops, I promise that all of

you will find something meaningful to bring back in order to

better your home club and division. Have a fantastic time

and I hope to see you around the hotel and convention

center!

Yours in Service and Friendship,

The ELIMINATE Project was picked up by Kiwanis in

order to eradicate MNT (maternal/neonatal tetanus)

from countries that have been affected by the

disease. MNT affects babies at birth, it does not allow

their mothers to hold them because every element

around them is causing them pain and results in

death in a very short time. With vaccinations at only

US$1.80, a woman is safe from passing on MNT to

their child after being born in unsanitary conditions.

Kiwanis has dedicated a five-year plan to raise

$110,000,000 that ends in 2015 and has currently

raised over $60,000,000.

Hershey’s Track & Field Games (also known as

HTFG) gives you an opportunity to inspire youth

ages 9 to 14 to try their best, and, most

importantly, have fun running, jumping and

throwing with friends and family. HTFG celebrates

excellence in service learning and youth activity

and achievement.

Mission:

We are growing every day, providing innovative,

arts-in-medicine supportive care programs for

children coping with serious illness, their families

and the health care providers who care for

them.

Description:

Children receive beads for every treatment

procedure and milestone that they encounter. A

child can tell you what every single bead on

their sometimes 1,000 bead strand signifies, from

blood draws, nights in the hospital to hair loss

and transplant. Their beads help them tell their

story and HONOR and RECOGNIZE their

COURAGE.

Children’s Miracle Network is a nonprofit organization

that strides itself to raise awareness and money for

children in hospitals around the nation. All CMN

Hospitals contributions directly benefit hospitals,

helping to purchase up-to-date equipment, train

staff, conduct life-saving research, implement

outreach programs and provide health care for

children whose parents can’t afford to pay.

March of Dimes is an organization focused on

working to prevent birth defects, premature birth

and infant mortality. Not only does March of Dimes

provide educational resources, but they also support

families affected by infant health problems. Many

children face the issue of being born premature. 1

out of every 8 babies are born prematurely.

Premature birth can lead to a lifetime of illness or

even death. By holding walks, dances and other

events, Key Club has been an advocate to the

cause as they earn money, educate the public and

give hope to families in need.

I am so fortunate to have found Key Club and been a part of this incredible organization for three years. I have learned so much and made countless memories. I would

like to specifically thank Riley Jandrew for being a fantastic governor, Manny Gonzalez for

supporting me for the entire time I have known him, the Southwest District board for being so

welcoming and inclusive, the administration team for being so selfless and keeping this organization going, and every Key Clubber I have ever met because you all have made my experience in this club unforgettable. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your 2014-2015 Lookout Mountain LTG and I will end with one of my favorite quotes, “No one has ever become poor by giving.” –Anne Frank.

Farewell from the 2014-2015 Board

Key Clubbers of the Southwest, Wow, what a year. We are always told to keep the end in mind, and now that the end is here, it’s pretty hard to accept. When I reflect on myself this time last year, I had no idea what I was getting into, but it has all turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. The members of this district have taught me so many things and have truly brought out the best in me. Through all of the late nights arguing over the DCON theme to the laughs held at service projects, this year is one that I will never, ever forget. You all have done such an amazing job making this district one that is true to every Key Club value: leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness. Never once have I gone to a Key Club event and not seen each of these morals upheld. In other words, you’re all awesome! Keep it up! I want to give a huge thank you to my remarkable home division, you have all been so supportive and always make me smile; to Mrs. Montaño, who is always willing to give it to me straight and never holds anything back, but does it completely out of love; to Dominic Dunlap who somehow stuck with me this entire year and loves me all the same; to my best friends who are always willing to lend an ear, even when they’re not sure what I’m talking about; and to all of my family on the board, you all are absolutely amazing and I couldn’t have chosen a better group of people to serve with myself. I hope everyone has a star-worthy experience at DCON; we’ve worked hard for it! Remember, in the wise words of our very own Bob Portillo, stay clubbertastic!! Farewell from the 2014-2015 Board

Southwest District Key Clubbers,

Over the past twelve months, we have

done many extraordinary things together

and I would personally like to take this

time to thank you for all your efforts. I

have created life-enduring friendships

with many of you through this past year

and have thoroughly enjoyed my time

spent as lieutenant governor. There are too many

individuals to single out, but I would like to particularly

thank my parents and friends for always keeping me on

track; as well as all the Kiwanis members that have

inspired me to live a service-oriented lifestyle. The most

essential group I would like to thank is the Key Clubbers of

this extraordinary district.

I can only hope that I was a reputable a leader as you

were an example for me. My interactions with each of

you have taught me leadership qualities that will serve

me for the rest of my life. I am positive that looking back

on my life when I am older I will always cherish my time

spent as lieutenant governor, and more importantly, a

key clubber.

For those of you graduating, I wish you all the best in your

future endeavors, and thank you for your service to the

Key Club family. I encourage you all to remain in the K-

Family because this organization is truly worth your time

and energy. For those of you fortunate to still be a part of

this exceptional Key Club family, I would like to challenge

you. I ask you to ask yourself – Why Key Club? Why You?

And why now?

Thank you all for being such instrumental pieces

throughout this memorable year, and I hope you all enjoy

this year’s district convention.

In service, Sarah Criscuolo

Page 30: Key to the southwest dcon edition

30

Farewell from the 2014-2015 Board To my fellow Southwest District,

It is almost inconceivable that yet another year of caring,

service, and friendship has drawn to a close. Though I can

write endlessly about all the amazing opportunities that

have presented themselves to me through Key Club, I will

keep this farewell concise. This past year, I served my

home club as Club President until early October when I

was given the honor of serving the South Mountain

Division as Lieutenant Governor. Making the decision to

leave the position at my club was one of the toughest, yet unbelievably

rewarding choices I have made. It was difficult to let go of the club that had

molded me into who I am today, especially mid year, but I knew that serving

on the District Board would be the most impactful in the long run. I am, to say

the least, quite pleased to have done so - thanks to all of you, the Southwest

District, and specifically, my South Mountain Division, I have been blessed

with the opportunity to witness the service and dedication that goes into

creating a successful and productive Key Club year. Although I am incredibly

thankful for all of the service you as Key Clubbers have put in, there are a few

individuals I would like to acknowledge specifically. I would firstly like to thank

Mrs. Katie Phalen, my home club advisor, for all of the time she devoted to

creating another incredible year for my home club and for aiding in my

endeavors. Nothing, that I have accomplished in Key Club thus far would have

been possible without her loving and caring personality. I would also like to

acknowledge Bob Portillo, my Zone Administrator, for all of the time and

effort he put into making sure I had all the resources available to be a

successful LtG. Lastly, I would like to thank our governor, Riley Jandrew, who

always created an optimistic and enthusiastic environment possible. I truly

believe that these individuals embody the spirit of Key Club and know that

they will continue to guide Key Clubbers in the best direction for as long as

they continue to serve the organization. I cannot thank you enough for this

incredible experience; it truly has made my senior year unforgettable. Though it

may feel as if you, the individual, does not make much of a difference in an

organization of 270,000 members, nothing that Key Club has accomplished

this past year would have been possible without you!

Danny Valencia

South Mountain Lieutenant Governor

Farewell from the 2014-2015 Board

Greetings Southwest, As the end of the school year is quickly approaching, I have witnessed both my fellow board members and my clubs grow. My experience as a lieutenant governor was indescribable. I just want to take a moment to say how amazing Key Club is and how it has touched my life. I joined Key Club my freshmen year. It started

with one friend bringing me in and two great advisers, Dr. Wildermuth and Mr. Ross, convincing me to stay. I

was new to my school and I was unsure about where the rest of my life was going. I started Key Club clueless of those in need around me and clueless of the difference I could make. Key Club has touched my life, I have met inspiring people that share that passion for service, I have seen tears of happiness and gratitude, I have gone and traveled to places I never thought I would see and I have developed a sense of appreciation. (I also own a lot of business clothes now.) I want to thank all the Key Clubbers out there for putting in another year of service and dedicating themselves to a better cause. Thank you to all the advisers and Kiwanians out there for not only continuing to volunteer and better your communities, but for encouraging Key Clubbers and supporting them in their endeavors. I want to give a special thank you to my Kiwanis Adviser Mr. Beatty, he has always been a role model to me. He comes to every one of our meetings and our sister school’s, he is always smiling and he is always willing to help, even if it involves driving a total of six hours to take two Key Clubbers to a Key Leader. My experience as Papago Division Lieutenant Governor has been incredible and service is something I will continue to do for the rest of my life. There is no such thing as being too involved or trying too hard. I never thought I would be in this position, I lost the first time I ran, but if you put in the effort and want to run for a district position or be on the executive board the only thing that is stopping you is yourself. Remember, “All of our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them”-Walt Disney. See you all in Albuquerque, New Mexico for District Convention, I would love the opportunity to meet all of you, plus I am a great listener and I like hugs. -Amanda Gonzalez, Papago Ltg.

32

Farewell from the 2014-2015 Board

With my term as Lieutenant Governor

coming to a close, I want to thank every

single one of you. It was thanks to all of

you Key Clubbers that my year as LTG

has been as great as it was. It was your

service, your dedication, and your

willingness to work as a team that my

made job not only easier, but also

incredibly more fun. It was thanks to Key

Club that I have made lifelong friends, who have

made this year absolutely amazing. Whether it was

people on the district board, people in my division, or

those I’ve met at other Key Club events, every single

one of them has given me reason to smile and I walk

away from Key Club with more friends than I could

ever imagine. It makes me even happier to know that

we have all been working towards a common goal –

making the world a better place. Key Club has also

given me the chance to grow and become a better

person. So while I’ve been changing for the better,

I’ve also helped the world change for the better,

alongside my friends. It doesn’t get any better than

that. I’d like to give one last thank you to the adult

team that has continuously supported all that we Key

Clubbers do and to my home club for supporting me

throughout the year as well. I wish you all immense

success and happiness in the next service year! And

good luck to all incoming officers! I hope to see you all

at DCON in Albuquerque, NM this year!

-Victoria Grijalva

Page 33: Key to the southwest dcon edition

33

First, I would like to thank you all

for having such a wonderful year.

You all have impacted our

community so much and have put I

in lots of service hours. You have

help better our community lives

and schools by what you have

done. Thank you to each key club that has put on

so many fundraisers to help out. Thank you to the

board that has helped me become a better

person, and have helped me through this year.

Becoming a member of the board, has taught me

new leadership skills and has given me many new

wonderful friends. Overall, this year I have

accomplished many things that I didn't know could

happen. Hope to see you all on March 27th in

Albuquerque for an amazing DCON!

Leaders of the Southwest,

Coming together is a beginning;

keeping together is progress; working

together is success ~ Henry Lewis. This

year I worked with some of the most

amazing people I have ever met,

through thick and thin I could always

believe in them. My time on the board has been life

changing, my life belongs to Key Club. Staying up late

to complete decorations and goodie bags; created

memories I will hold onto longer than a life time. I would

like to express a deep gratitude towards my

grandmother and mother, they are both miracle

workers!

They made it possible for everything I have done and

will do. I would also love to thank the La Cueva Kiwanis

club and my own key club for the support and help

they have

given to me during my term. There are no other

people I would love to stay up late working on service

projects with or all day planning a huge event. Key Club

will always be a major life shaping part of my life. I hope

everyone has a spectacular time at DCON and never

forgets the memories they make, or the people they

meet. I am excited to meet all of you.

Why must all of the best feelings and

moments come to an end? It honestly

feels like I was typing my introduction

as 2014-2015 Southwest District

Governor last week, but that was way

back in March when I was elected.

We've accomplished many things as

a district and as individuals, and I couldn't be more

amazed by each and every one of you.

I'm reminded daily that despite feeling like a failure and

having regretful feelings, every service project, dance-

athon, and car wash you and I partake in makes a

difference, big or small. We as Key Clubbers don't serve

to be above-the-fold in the local newspaper or to be

retweeted by the official Key Club Twitter account - we

serve because it's the right thing to do and we enjoy to

do so, and that in itself is the most important thing a Key

Clubber must live by.

This year is over, but our service to the world has just

begun. We may be "just high schoolers," but soon

enough, we'll be taking over the world, one food bank,

highway, and retirement home at a time.

Yours in Service and Leadership, Riley Jandrew

Farewell from the 2014-2015 Editor

Spicy Southwest Chilies!! This has been an absolute wonderful year! I have enjoyed my first year on the board and have learned so much from it. I have been lucky enough to have met all of the wonderful people on the board as well as expanding my Key Club horizons by working with all of my clubs.

I have so many people to thank for this wonderful experience but I’ll try to keep the list short. First, I am so thankful for the never-ending support that comes from my parents. They have always encouraged me to challenge myself. Then there are the lovely Riley Jandrew, Michael Iafrato, and Kelsae Pederson for always offering their help and advice. Last but not least, I would like to thank the entire board for helping me expand my knowledge on so many topics!

I hope that you found this Key to the Southwest edition helpful in your many Southwest District Convention adventures. This has veen a wonderful 60th DCON and has added to my fun Key Club memories. I look forward to service all of you in the future! Thank you Southwest Chilies! Sincerely, Audrey Schreiner Catalina Division Lieutenant Governor
