• To know how to deal with the eects of change, as a result of parental separation and divorce• To be aware of harmful behaviours that can result from negative life changes, such as family splits• To know how to safely access sources of support for themselves or their peers should they feel vulnerable
Learning Objectives
• Show the pupils the breakdown image. Ask them, in pairs, to explain what is happening. Just as things go wrong with vehicles and they break down, the same happens in relationships. Things go wrong and, unfortunately, repairing relationships and mending hearts isn’t as easy as replacing a clutch or draining a fuel tank!• Explain that separation and divorce is a dicult subject for both teachers and pupils alike. Extreme sensitivity should be shown throughout, as it is likely that many pupils have been aected by this issue.• Ask pupils to make their own list of reasons as to why they think relationships break down.

• Bearing in mind the reasons they have just come up with, give each pupil a copy of the ‘Arguing’ image and ask them to write what they think each person might be saying to the other in an argument situation. • Share some of these with the class.• Show the ‘Breaking Up’ PowerPoint quiz. Use the questions and slides to prompt discussion and allow pupils the opportunity to share their own experiences, if they wish to do so.• Pupils are to work in pairs. Using the ‘Harmful Behaviours’ list, give each pair a behaviour for them to research, with the purpose of producing a script for a TV advert. The advert is intended to discourage teenagers from indulging in that behaviour.• Watch https://youtu.be/HAmI1MJEC ‘You wouldn't start a night like this, so why end it that way?’ advert as inspiration.
