What are SATs?• SATs tests are compulsory national tests for

primary school pupils. Children in England are required to take Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) at the age of 11 (school Year 6).

• A way in which the government can test the progress of children made throughout their time at primary school.

2020 SATs

• These tests will be both set and marked externally, and the results will be used to measure the school’s performance (for example, through reporting to Ofsted and published league tables).

• Your child’s marks will be used in conjunction with teacher assessment to give a broader picture of their attainment.

• Information will be used in secondary school to enable children to be grouped according to their ability.

How KS2 SATs are marked (scaled scores)

What is meant by ‘scaled scores’?

• It is planned that 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’.

• Each pupil’s raw test score will therefore be converted into a score on the scale, either at, above or below 100.

• The scale will have a lower end point somewhere below 100 and an upper end point above 100.

• A child who achieves the ‘national standard’ (a score of 100) will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests.

• Each pupil receives:

a raw score (number of raw marks awarded in a test);

a scaled score in each tested subject;

confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard.

• The reading test consists of a single test paper with three unrelated reading texts. Children are given 60 minutes in total, which includes reading the texts and answering the questions.

• A total of 50 marks are available.

• Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading.

• During the reading paper, a child’s inference and deduction skills are thoroughly tested. They will also be expected to answer questions on authorial choices (explaining why an author has chosen to use particular vocabulary), grammar and text features.

• Some questions are multiple choice or selected response; others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation.

• A spelling test is administered containing 20 words, which lasts approximately 15 minutes.

• A separate test is given on grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.

• This test lasts for 45 minutes and requires short answer questions, including some multiple choice.

• Marks for these two tests are added together to give a total for grammar, punctuation and spelling (a raw score out of 70).

KS2 Maths Tests• Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions,

where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division.

• Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including:

Multiple choice

True or false

Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart

Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem

Writing• Teacher assessments for writing will be

reported against several new performance descriptors – teachers will choose which one a pupil best meets.

• A range of pupil’s work will be used to assess each child – writing, topic work and science.

• Children will continue to do writing until June to have as much evidence of their work as possible.

Useful Tips • Tip 1: Remember your child’s education is a

partnership. Make sure that your child attends school every day and please do not book any appointments during the next few weeks or SATs week.

• Tip 2: We have seen a significant improvement in pupils’ attitude to learning during the year. This has been the most important factor in improving their outcomes. It is very important that a determined attitude continues over the next few months and into the future as it will support your child in the years ahead.

15

Page 16: Key Stage 2 SATs Meeting › wp-content › uploads › ...• Each pupil’s raw test score will therefore be converted into a score on the scale, either at, above or below 100. •

Useful Tips • Tip 3:

- Support your child with homework tasks and daily reading. Children should be reading for at least 30 minutes every day.

- Please continue to use any study guides (including the CGP books) or websites to help with revision.

- The definition sheets for grammar, maths and reading (personality vocab) will help the children should be read through and revised frequently.

• Tip 4: Encourage your child to work to speed. Try timed recall of timetables on the journey to school. Set mini challenges. For example: ‘Can you find the word on the page that means ‘dangerous’? You have 1 minute - go!’ ‘What is 10% of 150? You have 10 seconds - go!’

16

Useful Tips• Tip 5: Make sure that your child is aware that getting stuck is not

a problem. Move on and give them another challenge and come back to the hard ones at the end and/or go through it together.

• Tip 6: In the last few weeks before the SATS, make sure your child is well rested and eats healthily. Ensure he/she goes to bed early and has a good routine established before the tests.

• Tip 7: It is easier said than done, BUT do not put your child under too much pressure. Just a little revision each night will make a big difference.

• Tip 8: Make sure you speak to your child’s teacher if your child is experiencing any difficulties at home or has any worries over the next few months.

After School Boosters and Easter School

• We have these sessions to help revise content we have learnt previously and to work on techniques for answering exam style questions

• Not all children will be invited because we are trying to keep the groups smaller (10-15 children) and target children who most need that extra boost

• After-school Boosters for maths have already started on a Tuesday from 3:15-4:20pm

• After-school Boosters for reading will begin after half term –parents whose children have been chosen will be informed by letter early next week

• Easter School is from Monday to Thursday, 9:00am-12 noon, on the 8th – 11th April in the first week of the holidays – we will send the letter inviting children to attend early next half term

Ramadan• In 2020, Ramadan will begin on the evening of Thursday,

April 23 and will end in the evening of Saturday, May 23.• This period includes SATS week (11th – 14th May).• We recognise that some pupils in year 6 will have made the

decision, with their families, to fast during daylight hours and as a school, we want to make sure that our students are fasting safely and that they feel fully supported and respected in doing so.

• The school strongly advises parents and children that pupils do not fast on the four days of the SATS week because of the risk that they may become unwell on these important days in their school careers.

• The following week many year 6 pupils are attending the residential school trip to Gilwell Park from Monday 18th to Wednesday 20th of May. It will not be possible for children to fast while they are at Gilwell as the meals provided will be during daylight hours.

SATs Week Y6 Breakfast Club• This year we will again be running our popular

Breakfast Club during SATs week for Year 6

• It will be in the hall, Monday to Thursday (not on the Friday).

• It will begin at 8.10am and they will receive breakfast cereal, cereal bar and juice, free of charge.

• This allows us to ensure all children are fully prepared and energised for their day.

• The children will then have a short break in the playground for 10 minutes from 8:40-8:50am.
