I’d like to lead a conversation dedicated to the most powerful trends affecting IT today as well as the ripple effects throughout businesses like yours. I will also share some insights and best practices about ways to help people do their jobs more efficiently while protecting and advancing the business. In doing so, we will address:

Key Points:• Why organizations like yours are recognizing the need to face the

changing realities of several interconnected trends in technology. • What Citrix has learned, based upon years of successful experience

with customers, about what organizations need to create a successful desktop transformation solution.

• How Citrix can help your organization assess, design and get started with a desktop virtualization solution that best addresses your needs.

Transition: To start, it’s important to understand why organizations around the world are moving in this direction, and why they believe a desktop virtualization solution is essential to their long-term success.

Intro: We have a long history in mobility as a pioneer and leader in remote access. As importantly, we have delivered on device independence – providing access to IT services from any device. This is more critical than ever because consumerization is multiplying the number of devices people use – PCs, smartphones and tablets.

Key Points:

Mobile Workstyles• Mobile workstyles allow people to work anywhere with anyone – collaborating with

a high-definition experience that’s "just like being there“.• And, being mobile means data should securely follow the user – enabling simple

and secure access from any device. • And, of course, there are apps – providing every user with self-service access to

any Windows, Web, SaaS, or Mobile app from a universal access point that’s device independent.

Cloud Services• On the cloud services side, our vision is that Public clouds become more secure &

transparent. Private clouds become more flexible & economical. Our goal is to deliver on this promise without being locked into any particular virtual infrastructure or cloud service provider.

• Powering cloud services starts with a single point of control that unifies the provisioning and security of Windows, web, SaaS and mobile apps through an enterprise storefront.

• At the back of the private cloud, a bridge to public clouds transparently enables infinite datacenter capacity.

• Underneath, we enable the build-out of Amazon-style clouds – from basic compute and storage, to end-user apps.

• And, to deliver cloud services to mobile users is an app-aware network that’s high performance, secure, and always available. This is a foundational piece for providing secure access to on-demand IT services over private or public networks to any device.

Transition: This isn’t just talk, we’ve actually built tailor-made solutions, to help make

this work for any organization.

Intro: Desktop virtualization addresses many of IT’s most pressing concerns simultaneously.

Key Points:• We can free people from the constraints of a more traditional enterprise

computing model. Our approach is already enabling people to work and collaborate from anywhere, and to access any IT service from any device. It is a new, more people-centric approach that spans from desktop to datacenter.

• IT has the ability to centralize, virtualize and deliver apps, desktops and data with greater control, security, and efficiency and ultimately lower operating costs. Any data center becomes a delivery center and where all aspects of computing become cloud-based services.

• For IT, Citrix technology enables a virtual datacenter – where computing resources are always available to users with the security, performance and control that IT requires to manage desktops and apps. It is the foundation of the new, transformed people-centric IT –easier and simpler.

• For end-users, Citrix technology offers virtual workstyles with the flexibility to balance work and life – the freedom to collaborate and work anywhere, on any device – achieving the freedom employees want with the control IT requires.

• For the business, Citrix provides the agility needed to seize new growth opportunities – organic and inorganic, deliver exceptional customer service and create a more efficient business.

Illustration/Anecdotes/Proof: (Bring in Citrix examples that demonstrate the claims made above.)

Transition: Let’s take a look at what is possible today through a customized Desktop Virtualization solution.

Page 5: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

Intro: These trends have led IT and business leaders to envision a different kind of future for their organizations…

Key Points:• With access to desktops, apps and data anytime,

anywhere• With a great user experience, no matter the device or

network• With centralized management of desktops and apps• Always staying up-to-date with security and compliance

imperatives• Enabling continuity and recovery in the event of major

disruptions to the business

Illustration/Anecdotes/Proof: (Perhaps ask here for examples from the prospect’s organization—how these common priorities match theirs…)

Transition: But the world of traditional desktops won’t allow all of these things to happen.

4

Page 6: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

Intro: The traditional desktop model has served us well, but increasingly it presents problems related to complexity, inflexibility and security.

Key Points:• Today’s enterprise computing model is increasingly complex and difficult to

manage • Maintaining individual components and striving for tighter control and

integration across various silos means very high on-going IT maintenance costs, diminished security, and reduced user productivity.

• The traditional way of delivering desktops carries expensive implications• Requiring users to work from the office or offering limited remote access,

resulted in reduced productivity and higher barriers to finding talent• Standardizing endpoint devices to address security and manageability

concerns, causing increased end-user frustration about lack of mobility• Physically shipping PCs and infrastructure to offshore workers, branch offices

and new M&As, forcing lengthy delays to key initiatives, resulting potential lost profits, loss of first-mover advantage, etc.

• Investing resources in continuously updating, patching and refreshing PCs, regularly disrupting users without any perceived benefit

• Inflexible combination of operating systems, applications, user settings and data hard coded to a specific device.

Illustration/Anecdotes/Proof: (Perhaps ask here for examples from the prospect’s organization—how they handle new offices, acquisitions, onboarding, remote access, explosion of devices and apps, etc…)

Transition: The impact of the issues extends into HR, finance, operations and even strategic planning. But much of the responsibility for addressing these issues falls on IT management.

Morgan Stanley’s recent CIO survey, which was conducted in Q4’11, provided a strong data point to the growth trajectory of desktop virtualization market, as 72% of CIOs still plan to start adopting virtual desktops by the 2012, up from 49% adoption today among survey respondents.

Lets take a look at some trends. This graph paints a very clear picture i.e. Virtual Desktops costs are trending down while physical desktop costs are flat( reducing 2-3%), some of the reasons for the declining costs are

• Moore’s Law increasing Server Density – lowers $ per user. Some high performance servers can lower these costs by 25-30% and they will continue to decline(up to 50% by 2013)

• Moore’s Law reducing costs of thin clients – lowers $ per device/per user, this cost element is the one of the biggest cost components in virtual desktop deployment.

• Improvements in storage utilization – lowers $ per user. Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning)

• Improvements in DV software – optimizes storage, server, and network usage and better solution bundles

7

Page 9: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

So here is how it all measures up against physical PC’s.

The other guy offers VDI only, that on an average costs about 30% more ( due to additional costs -WAN optimization, and a technology that takes up more storage and servers)

We on the other hand offer XenDesktop - the clear market leader in this space that has led the way in driving down costs and optimizing datacenter resources, thanks to Citrix FlexCast technology, that allows you to broadcast different kinds of virtual desktops that meet different user requirements.

We offer • Shared Desktops - that significantly reduce costs by offering the best scalability while catering to

mostly task workers ( offering 2X user density as compared to VDI therefore reducing server costs)• Built-in WAN optimization capabilities delivered thru HDX and Branch Repeater • Reduced storage costs with

• Intellicache – IntelliCache leverages the image from central storage and caches the image on the XenServer local host so that subsequent reads and writes are retrieved from local host storage

• Personal vDisk - enables you to deliver all the apps and personalization your VDI users need without resorting to delivering expensive, dedicated desktops therefore cutting storage by 65%

• And lastly there is the cost of the device. Last year, Citrix announced the HDX-on-a chip initiative which will drive down device (including thin clients) costs down by 30-50% and within 6 months with expectations for devices reaching sub $100 levels.

• And with XenDesktop you can enable your employees to bring their own devices to work and remove the device costs out of the equation!

So today , with XenDesktop FlexCast technology the total acquisition costs come in about 15% lower than PC’s and by mid 2012 we expect to see reductions in device costs that should help educe the costs by upto 40% and as BYO’s get more popular the costs will drop around another 25%.

AssumptionsPhysical PC - According to a Gartner report, we assume that "the cost of a physical desktop will be $972 (monitor included) with a four-year life

cycle.”( Source: Gartner Desktop Total Cost of Ownership: 2011 Update, Federica Troni, February 2011.) (Please use this quote verbatim)User Mix: We chose a user mix of 75% task workers, 20% knowledge workers and 5% power users as a representative baseline

List Pricing: We use standard list pricing. This eliminates volume discount bias and provides a like-to-like compare. This results in costs that are typically higher than what businesses will actually pay, because every business will have unique costs due to size, locations and existing IT investments.

Servers: We selected a Dual CPU, six-core Xeon 5650 with 128 GB of memory Blade server, list price $13,390. This server supports 96 task users, 84 knowledge users or 72 power users. Notably, new higher performance servers can offer significantly lower per user costs.

Devices for virtual desktops: We selected Thin Clients, at $350, again taking the middle of the road cost option. New low-end PCs are the highest capital cost option, while refurbished PCs, or BYO offer costs near $0. Note that the device costs include monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Desktop OS: We selected Windows 7, as this is the target for nearly all businesses, as opposed to XP. Window 7 has slightly higher resource

requirements than XP

Storage: We assumed unique storage needs for each user type – Task 10GB, Knowledge 20GB and Power 40GB. Efficiencies due to single image

8

Page 10: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

management (cloning) and personalization reduced storage needs of each user

type up to 90% depending on user type. Per user storage requirements are then

doubled to account for saving a back-up copy of all images

Software: We used a standard software list price of $180 per user, not including

maintenance, for the Basic VDI configuration. When we evaluated XenDesktop we

applied the standard perpetual license list prices, less Subscription Advantage

(SA). XenDesktop Enterprise was used for LAN users - $190/user ($225 less $35

SA). XenDesktop Platinum was used for WAN users (built-in WAN Op) - $300/user

($350 less $50 SA).

LAN/WAN: We assumed a mix of 50% of users working in the main office over

the LAN and 50% working in remote or branch offices over the WAN. This is

typical of most medium and large businesses today. This means that we need to

configure WAN Optimization equipment for 50% of the users. Standalone WAN

Optimization equipment is estimated at $200 - $400 per user, depending on scale

of deployment.

Intro: The way Citrix looks at desktop virtualization is this…

Key Points:• Desktop Virtualization allows both end users and IT meet their needs. • Citrix executive mobility solutions empower executives of the future

with the mobility they need today with:• Wherever, whenever productivity• The best device in any scenario• Face-to-face contact across the globe and• Healthier work-life balance

Wrap-Up the Presentation: Establish clear next steps and objective of the next meeting.

• Who is in the room and who is not in the room? Who can serve as a sponsor or be the influencers? Who is it that is most interested?

• Would they be interested in an assessment – come in to understand their requirements in more detail (devices, users, apps, etc)

• Technical presentation – other people not there who need to delve into the details of any of the products?

• POC?• Meeting – higher-level group – maybe do a demo in the technology• Bring the brochure back to them and see if we can get into another

meeting to show them the technology in action.

10

Page 13: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

Intro: Industry experts agree about Citrix’s leadership.

Key Points:• Decisions are being made or at least planned every day. There is a consensus

that this space is growing more than 20% year/year and we know that 70% of CIO have desktop virtualization among their top 10 strategic initiatives, and half of those already are investing in at least limited deployments.

• Desktop and application virtualization technologies can be confusing. However, Industry experts such as IDC and Gartner have named Citrix as leaders in this industry because we are the only vendor to have a breadth of technologies focused at solving the broadest range of users and use cases rather than simply providing a one size fits all product

Illustration/Anecdotes/Proof:

• Citrix rated Strong Positive in the Desktops and End-user Computing category in the Gartner Vendor Rating (Source: Gartner Vendor Rating: Citrix Systems Publication Date: 14 September 2011 ID Number: G00215870).

• Citrix is the only Leader in the IDC MarketScape report (Source: IDC MarketScape Worldwide Desktop Virtualization 2011 Vendor Analysis”, by Ian Song, doc #22861e_citrix, June 2011).

Transition: Better yet, I can share with you how a Citrix DV solution is driving business forward for organizations like yours…

11

But it’s not just the analysts, our customers are our biggest fans.

The business drivers to “go virtual” at the desktop are broad…

impacting customers of all sizes and industries

Worldwide, we now have 80 customers with more than 10,000

seats of XenDesktop… with several in excess of 100,000. So these

companies are running their business on this technology and not

looking back.

What’s incredible is that if I showed you this same slide a few

quarters ago, these numbers looked a lot more modest…

Customers are scaling fast. In fact, we’ve grown over 40% year of

year in our previous quarter

#1 Market Share according to IDC, with over 52% of the market

12

Page 15: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

13

So now, let’s shift our attention to the product. To start, let’s talk about our design principles. If you understand these, the rest of the architecture and major features make a lot more sense.

-To begin, we start with the End-User… We think about their day from the time they get up to the time they go to bed and how technology touches their life at home and work.

-Because we’re focused on the user, we become technology agnostic. We aren’t a company built on only hypervisor technology. That’s one great technology that we’ve invested in, but we’ll invest in any technology that we think can help complete a use case, making it easier for users to do their job while making it simpler for IT to manage and secure.

-We also know from our experience of over 15 years of providing secure application and desktop access over remote networks where networks are poor and latencies high that bandwidth is precious, so we assume from the start that bandwidth is restricted and latency is high. If you’re on the LAN, perfect, but if not, you want to leverage the investments we’ve made in networking and protocol technologies.

-We also believe in embracing consumer devices. There is no such thing as a “zero client” I can get a lot of computing power in my hand today for very little cost. A Kindle fire sells for under $200 with the capability to render graphics and decode highly compressed video, so why not use that power? Leveraging the power of these devices makes your datacenter that much more scalable and takes load off of the network, all while improving the user experience.

-We design to be secure by default. This starts from our assumption that user

Page 16: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

data is best kept in the datacenter and only distributed when it can be audited.

-And finally, we build on an open architecture. We play with the infrastructure investments you may have already made be it hypervisors or management tools

13

Page 17: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

So next, let’s take a look at the XenDesktop components.

Working from left to right, we start with Citrix Receiver… This is the one client you need on a device to consume any of the services served up in your private cloud. Receiver may be downloaded and installed easily by the user and simply needs a URL to point to. After that, Receiver manages itself downloading any additional components it needs based on the services you offer the user.

Whenever you are accessing hosted apps or desktops, the user interface, USB and printer traffic, webcams and audio traffic are all traveling over the network. HDX is our high definition user experience technologies that includes the ICA protocol.

Now, when users come to your private cloud looking for services, it has to be simple. You need one “place” for users to go and get an integrated view of the desktops, apps, and files available to them. Citrix CloudGateway is the latest

14

Page 18: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

iteration technology to allow you to build an enterprise app store aggregating apps and desktops and upgradable for Web, SaaS, mobile apps, and secure file access.

Underneath the gateway is a a host of Citrix NetScalerproducts available to optimize a XenDesktop deployment. This includes the seamless AccessGateway VPN product, Global server load balancing for intelligent load balancing and high availability across datacenters, and Branch Repeater for industry leading WAN acceleration and optimization.

Once we move into the private cloud we see FlexCast. Think of FlexCast as a series of application and desktop delivery technologies.. Whether provisioning and hosting desktop virtual machines, hosting server-based desktops, hosting or streaming applications, or streaming and synchronizing desktops executing outside of the datacenter, The XenDesktop architecture is designed to pull apart the layers of the desktop and dynamically combine them appropriately for any any use case… Let’s go a bit further into FlexCast.

14

Page 19: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

Intro: The marketplace today is full of devices, so any true solution must accommodate them all.

Key Points:• The Citrix Desktop Virtualization solution allows employees the freedom to

choose the devices that suit their lifestyle, not have to choose from a small list of corporate approved devices.

• IT can now support the widest range of platforms and device types, as well as be backed by technology that keeps pace with the new emerging devices.

• Desktop Virtualization includes the complete solution for delivering virtual desktops and on-demand apps to any device with Citrix Receiver. Citrix Receiver is a high performance, universal client technology that enables IT to deliver virtual desktops, Windows, web and SaaS applications and content as an on-demand service to any device. Universal support for a wide variety of browsers—Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or Safari means the widest range of devices.

Illustration/Anecdotes/Proof:

Transition: One of the important elements of this solution is a self-service app store…

15

Page 20: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

Intro: This is why a self-service app store is so important. With the Citrix Desktop Virtualization solution:

Key Points:• People can access any of their authorized apps easily on any device• And they do so through a secure, consistent app store• With a convenient single sign-on experience.

Transition: Let’s talk about the quality of user experience as well.

16

Page 21: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

Intro: This is more of an architectural view of the unified storefront solution, specifically the CloudGateway component which contains multiple sub-components

Key Points: Gateway services represents the security layer – this is the enforcement point for the contextual security controls you can set based on device characteristics, location (inside corporate network or external), network trustworthiness (public wi-fi or private network) and more. Gateway remote access and security services reside upon the NetScaler platform, which can be deployed as either hardware or a virtual appliance. StoreFront is the layer that aggregates and presents the unified app store to the users via Receiver. From a deployment perspective StoreFront is a software download that gets installed on a Windows 2008 R2 server. Finally, the content controllers that feed into StoreFront and deliver provisioning and single sign-on features include XenDesktop, XenApp and AppController. XenDesktop and XenApp provide all virtualized desktops and apps to StoreFront, and then the AppControllercomponent provides web apps, SaaS apps, mobile apps and data hosted by ShareFile Enterprise. AppController is a virtual appliance available for deployment on either XenServer or Vmware.

Supporting Data and/or Stories:

the essential features that provide those previously mentioned IT and

customer benefits.

Use Cases:

Page 24: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

• A new hire begins work and needs to be provisioned by IT• The new-hire goes on the road but still needs to do their job• Employees change status, which then needs to propagate

across the IT infrastructure and content (e.g. apps and data)

18

Page 25: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

Intro: The keys for user experience are high-definition and consistency.

Key Points:• The next big piece here is HDX

• HDX is built on the core foundation of the company, going back nearly two decades.

• We know that people are coming from outside your corporate network, over difficult networks in order to access what they need; our R&D investments have gone to multimedia, voice and video collaboration.

• If you plug in a USB device, it just works without any training or extra support.

• Whenever we talk about protocol, WAN optimization comes up: how do you manage bandwidth and manage latency, but also give proper priority within all the different channels and the virtual desktop experience?

• We know that across that same network there is all kinds of other traffic going on. And so to really be able to provide QoS you have to be thinking about how do I compete with and prioritize different types of desktop traffic along with all the other traffic on the network.

• We have split the ICA protocol (that’s what is underneath the covers of HDX) into 5 different streams that can sit on 5 different ports so your network folks can manage QoS.

• Examples include those elements that are real time such as voice and video or interactive elements on the display versus things like bulk USB data or background data that could be given a much lower priority and not impact their user experience. By putting all these technologies together you get as many users on a pipe as possible and give all users the same QoS day in and day out.

Transition: So lets take a look at how some of the core components of HDX

19

Page 26: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

work.

19

Page 27: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

Media streaming is one example and we will be talking about flash. But this really goes for any type of multi media, as well as 3D graphics commands. At its core, you want to use the power of whatever device you have in order to offload work and reduce bandwidth load from your network and data center. And this is really unique compared to other vendors. And so what we are doing dynamically every time you make a connection is that every time your users connect to a desktop, the system is taking a look at what’s going on at the server, how much available bandwidth there might be, and what sort of capabilities reside on the client device rather than the server, (click)

(click) And then making those real time decisions.

So, for instance if I want to play a flash video, the first thing I might do is click on a YouTube video and dynamically the system is going to know that I have a local flash player on my device and that I can render it locally. So, instead of rendering on the server, I’m going to off load that and render it down on the device. And that has real world implications. One, its going to look great for the user – so the user is happy. Two, your taking that already extremely compressed traffic and putting it over your same network. So there’s no impact to your network whether its your local machine or not. Most importantly, If I were to do that

20

Page 28: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

same work back in the server room its very expensive. Decoding that h.264 stream and then re-encoding and sending over the wire is expensive. I don’t want to do it if I don’t have to. So, I get a huge improvement in server density if I can offload that to a client local processor that’s idle most of the time anyway. And its not just about PCs, but even the smallest, lowest cost thin clients can do that rendering. So its just not about having that PC out at the endpoint.

20

Page 29: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

Another new advancement in our HDX technologies is the HDX Ready SoC program which is about introducing a new class of low end but powerful devices by adding hardware-based HDX optimizations to these devices along with an updated linux Receiver for OEMs plus an SDK.

This program is designed to help device manufacturers drive down the cost of client devices and is adaptable to the latest innovations. Best of all, the initiative is also expected to dramatically reduce the cost of high-definition thin clients, ultimately breaking the sub-$100 price point. Beginning next month you will begin to see manufacturers announcing new zero and thin clients solutions based on this architecture

The new reference design will be available initially for standards based ARM solutions but will be extended to include x86-based implementations.

Intro: Our solution is easy to scale, manage and support.

Key Points:• Citrix provides a powerful desktop computing infrastructure and an open

architecture that’s easy to manage and support—with complete integration and automation via a comprehensive SDK

• Whatever infrastructure you’re on, this works - if you are doing vSphere today, we support vSphere 5. You can build all this on top of that VMware infrastructure. If you are looking at Hyper-V, you’ll find some fantastic integrations with System Center 2012. And of course, within your licensing, you also have full access to XenServer.

Illustration/Anecdotes/Proof: (Offer examples here of customers who were using vSphere, Hyper-V, etc…)

Transition: These are important decisions to consider, and most of our customers have sought out third-party expert opinions before deciding upon Citrix.

Page 31: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

Intro: We can deploy virtual desktops across the enterprise faster than ever, through AppDNA technology.

Key Points:• The Citrix AppDNA software platform enables organizations to quickly and

intelligently assess their application portfolio and migration plans. As part of the Citrix Desktop Transformation Model, this gives customers important information that helps them plan and more rapidly implement a strategy to deliver Desktops as a service to all users in the enterprise.

• The key benefits include: • Rapid application portfolio analysis – To determine any potential

install and/or runtime issues associated with application migration. A report is generated that provides the assessment in an easy-to-read format (red, amber, green) along with an effort calculator that provides project sizing in terms of resources required to complete.

• Intelligent application remediation – AppDNA provides guidance to an organization for those applications that are determined to have potential compatibility issues. In many cases, the remediation can be provided directly via the AppDNA tools. Organizations now have a confirmed starting point for their migrations as well as a path forward to ensure the success of the project.

• Automated application packaging – AppDNA enables organizations to rapidly deploy applications through automated packaging of applications in Microsoft Windows Installer

Transition: One of the most important considerations we hear in the market is that of scalability…

For each unique customer environment, know their Green –light user acceptance testing, Amber/Yellow – needs remediation, Red – has some serious remediation issues. Rather than spending time on manual testing and taking your best guess at how an application works, know the actual application issues. U = unclassified, for example, the Firefox & IE categories are for web apps, but none of these are web apps.

So as I described earlier, FlexCast is about having an infrastructure Flexible and Powerful enough to meet any use case. There is no one size fits all technology when you think about all the different ways that users need to access their apps and data.

So let’s look at some of the desktop virtualization delivery models…

First, many of you may be familiar with VDI… This is just one form of desktop virtualization where a desktop OS is hosted as a virtual machine in the data center…Some of you may also be familiar with Hosted Shared Desktops, this is a tried and true model in use at huge scale as it is extremely scalable and affordable as each instance of a server OS is shared by many users.Other forms include Physical desktops used for GPU accelerated 3D application and Remote PC access, Streamed desktops where the entire OS is streamed to PCs for local execution, and Local desktops, powered by XenClient useful for managing fleets of corporate laptops or in high security multiple network environments.

Intro: Let’s spend a few minutes talking about VDI – and in particular Pooled VDI and some of the new capabilities and unique strengths XenDesktop delivers.

Dedicated: And, when you think about VDI, in the past, there’s typically been this stress between trying to choose between a persistent and dedicated VDI model and a pooled VDI non-persistent model. Ideally, users want the dedicated model. They want their own desktop sitting in the datacenter. They can do whatever they want to it – and they are not giving anything up. Certainly your executives are wanting this as well as your knowledge workers and it’s the way most folks start with a virtual desktop deployment. The problem with that is now you might provision these from a single image, but they are all living in separate virtual machines in your datacenter pulling all they’re own storage and now they are independent VMs that you have to manage throughout their lifecycle. And so that gets expensive.

Pooled: Many people get to a couple hundred of these and then wow, do we really want to keep managing this way. And, so where people then go to is a pooled model where now I’ve got multiple desktops that are created and continue to run from a single base image so I’m getting a lot of benefit from de-duplication across your SAN. And, users log in and are renting or leasing a desktop. You put your folder re-direction and profile management on top of that and those users will be very happy.

Then you can scale this up you can patch the base image and the next time people login they get a new desktop put their profiles on top, get their folder redirection and they are not going to be disrupted. The problem with that is how do you identify all the users that are going to be served by those specific applications that are included in that base image; that you cover all the corner cases, and that you’ve given them all the personalization they really need. And, so today most organizations are really stuck somewhere between these two models trying to figure out how they roll out over time.

Pooled with PvD: And, to solve that is this idea of combining a personal vDisk with the pooled single image in order to provide users that dedicated desktop. And the way to

30

Page 40: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

think of this vDisk is, this is another storage object that sits in the data center and is sort of an intelligent diff between that user’s desktop and what’s in that base image. The vDiskkeeps track of all those changes and is intelligent enough to know what is in that base image. My best key is now I can patch that base image just one time, and its going to effect all those users but its not going to break anything that the users have done different from that. So, they are not going to break your applications, not going to break your user’s profiles. So, this is really the model, the default of how you will roll out virtual desktops – using single image management and personal vDisks. Use can also make those vDisks targets for your traditional ESD tools. So, if you want to use MS System Center to push applications out to a user, they are going to still have a common single base image. Also, that individual user can install an application if you want to let them do that. And that can be persisted in the personal vDisk. So that might be great for that plugin that gives them just the right amount of flexibility so they feel like this is a great model and are supportive of the initiative over time.

Personal vDisk technology is a powerful new tool that provides the persistence and customization users want with the management flexibility IT needs. User or admins can install apps in a desktop and it supports application delivery tools such as System center configuration manager, and App-V, XenApp virtual apps. Because Personal vDisks bring the scale of pooled desktops, storage can be reduced by more than 65% over dedicated deployments.

when we talk about this shared desktop delivery model, this is traditionally what’s been a feature of XenApp. So, again this comes with your XenDesktop license. It is a server based desktop, but most of the server based desktops are fairly stripped down. In Windows Server 2008, you can actually turn on desktop services and now it also includes a Windows 7user interface. So, at the end of the day, users won’t know that it’s a server based desktop, they will just see a Windows 7 like desktop and its coming from Windows Server. And then again, there are multiple sessions being served up by each instance so it’s a very scalable and efficient model – all coming from the data center. But typically, the keyword here is that its shared. So, typically, even if you spin up that server instance on a VM, you give it so much memory and give it so much CPU, all the users who are sharing that resource are getting best use out of those resources. So, if any one of those users has an application that is particularly demanding such as some

31

Page 42: Key Points: Why What - Frontier Technology€¦ · Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning) • Improvements

video, now that’s sort of taking from resources from another user. And so this model is great where you have a very steady workload , relatively low intensity applications, where you can really measure and build out an efficient architecture in that shared model.
