TNRF initiatives

Last year TNRF – TFWG coordinated a roundtable discussion on PES in Arusha where we had people from; The field developing models Researchers from UDSM and SUA Private sector – linking sellers and buyers

One of the recommendations from this meeting was to organize a second meeting and try to invite more people to share what we are doing.

Progress

Most of the initiatives have been uncoordinated – project oriented

Work done is not shared with a wider audience as we are here now

Impact to natural resource governance is limited since the process of setting up the initiative is not known to most concerned

Benefits to rural communities who are owners of the resources is not clearly known

Challenges There are very few known projects in Tanzania being

implemented which are known to many of us Some of the few projects being implemented need a

lot of investment in terms of capacity building etc. Initially they need time to give products when

beneficiaries (rural community) need immediate returns

These projects are scattered across the country Involvement of community members in the design

and implementation is not very clear The linkage between sellers and buyers is not very

transparent

Way forward

Result of this meeting will provide the group with what to do next after all these issues which I have raised

One of the things that we can consider is setting a platform where we can share this information

Way forward from the meeting plenary session Input to draft REDD framework/potential for CSO’s to influence policy

TFWG to circulate framework electronic copy. TFCG to follow up on formal input to framework Nominate point person/org for full framework development process or

increase point people (e.g. increase volume of input). Aim for 2 people. Get someone on REDD technical committee (2 NGO (ask for another

one), 1 private sector) Focus on filling info gap areas linked to govt policy or admin

decisions/strengthen links to govt Maintain information flow from local projects to the group and beyond

(into national and international policy processes) Improve inventory of who’s doing what in PES initiatives (e.g. other

private initiatives e.g. Green Resources) (Marc and Selemani to develop list of other private initiatives and share back to group)

Find the DANISH woman doing consultancy for DPG on what is going on in climate change work etc (Simon assigned)

Need a timetable summary of overall REDD process at international/national level

Other NGO’s/CSO’s working on carbon issues in other landscapes (wetlands, rangelands etc)?
