THE HILLMAN KEY CATALOG

Key duplication is a very important service for you to offer in your business. Every customer that walks in your store is a potential sale because everybody uses keys.

The Hillman Key Center has been designed to be an attractive addition to your store service and provide you with the ability to duplicate most keys that customers ask for.

This catalog is designed to help you nd the right key for your customer. It contains four reference sections ranging from manufacturer key blank usage to actual key proles to compare millings and cross sections. Combined with a key index with part numbers it will give you the exibility to nd the right key blank even with just limited information stamped on your customers’ key.

Your Hillman Key Center catalog covers the most popular keys that are sold throughout the country. There are many other key blanks available through Hillman. Should you have a need for any other key blank, you can order them from your Hillman Sales Representative or by calling Hillman at 1-800-800-4900 and place your order with our customer service department.

Hillman Key Identification

THE PARTS OF A KEY BLANK

To correctly identify a key, it is necessary to become familiar with the different parts of a typical key blank (FIG. 1). The bow or head of the key blank is often manufactured in a shape unique to a particular manufacturer. Located within the bow is the key chain hole which is used to secure a group of keys together.

The shoulder stop is the component used to align the key blank. However, some key blanks feature no shoulder stop (i.e., FORD H51) and must be aligned from the tip (FIG. 2). There is a last group of commonly requested key blanks which are aligned from the notched tip cut (i.e., Best BE2), in the same way the more conventional keys are aligned from the shoulder stops (FIG. 3).

The millings or grooves form easily identiable patterns which enable a particular key to be inserted easily into the corresponding cylinder. These millings or grooves provide another way for us to distinguish keys.

The area from the shoulder stop to the tip is commonly referred to as the blade. This completes the identication of the essential parts of a typical key blank.

SINGLE AND DOUBLE BITTED KEYS

The rst type of key blank is the single-bitted or single-sided key blank (FIG. 1) which is cut on the side referred to as the top of the blade or cutting edge. On this type of key, the reverse edge is referred to as the bottom of the blade. This side of a single-bitted key blank is never cut.

The second form of key blank commonly requested is the double-bitted or double-sided key blank (FIG. 2). Both sides of this type of key blank are referred to as the cutting edge. Both sides of this type of key blank must be cut.

IDENTIFYING KEY BLANKS

Key blanks may be correctly identied in any one of several ways. First, a key blank may be identied by the shape of the bow or head of the key as in the case of AB62C (FIG. 4). NOTE: The shape of the bow is an invaluable aid in identifying a key blank, but is not always a guarantee of a match. Second, a key blank may be identied by the alpha-numeric code found on the key bow or head (FIG. 4).

All keys ultimately fall into two categories: originals and duplicates. The original keys are the keys that are included with the lockset when the initial purchase is made. The duplicate keys are working keys which have been duplicated from the original keys.

Always remember to match the key and the key blank by bow or head style, by millings, or by alpha-numeric code. To further guarantee the correctness of your choice, put the key and the key blank together. Visually match the various characteristics, such as blade length, bow style, and the milling conguration from either side, both sides (FIG 5), and vertically from the tip as well (FIG 6).

Finally, use the actual size drawings in the catalog to determine the accuracy of your selection. You should place the tip of the key against the drawing of the key blank prole which appears under the illustration of the key blank (FIG 7). NOTE: DO NOT hold the key blade pointed toward you and compare to the mill shown, you will see the mirror image.

By following this procedure you will nd the correct key to duplicate each and every time! NOTE: All key blanks in this catalog are to be identied by holding the key blank in your right hand with the cutting edge facing up. At this point the thumb side is the left (l) side of the key blank, and the nger side is the right (r) side of the key blank.

USING THE CATALOG TO IDENTIFY KEYS

The Hillman Key Center Catalog is designed for quick and easy reference of the most popular key blanks in North America. This catalog is divided into four sections:

The rst section provides a list of manufacturers and product groups with their corresponding key blanks they have used. This section will be very helpful in reducing your possible matches when little or no information is stamped on your customers’ key.

The second section lists the most popular key blanks that Hillman inventories including part numbers and color availability. It also provides page numbers to easily locate the key blank in the Key Prole Section.

The third section contains proles on all keys is divided into two sections. One for Household, Padlock & Commercial and the other for Domestic & Import Automotive. This will allow you to physically compare your costumers’ key with the drawings that show millings and cross sections.

The forth and nal section covers Cross References. There are several numbering systems in addition to Hillman which are often stamped on keys. This usually includes the manufacturers name followed by a code number. This section will enable you to translate a number from another system in the Hillman system (Fig 8). Once the number has been translated into a Hillman number, the key blank can be referenced and located visually in the Key Prole Section the catalog.

PROPER CLAMPING WITH HILLMAN 2100 AND 3100 JAW

The earlier vision of the Super Jaw II found on most 2100 and 3100 Machines has one specic difference, there is a side on this jaw marked A/W Instead of Narrow. This jaw is used for clamping the Schlage SC-6 and SC-22 Double Sided Keys showed in the drawing. The remainder of the jaw is marked WIDE, STANDARD and X. These positions are used the same as the newer Super Jaw II.

PROPER CLAMPING WITH HILLMAN 4100 SUPER JAW II

The Narrow Side of the Super Jaw is used mostly for your narrow width keys. Examples: M-2,Y-11,Y-12

The Wide Side is for holding Ford double sided keys and similar types. Lay the key so the center ledge is at against the top surface of the jaw.

The Standard is for holding regular such as house and padlock and single side automotive keys.

The X is used on most double Cylinder keys, side automotive keys. Grip these keys by the groves rather than the blade edge where the cuts are located.

PROPER CLAMPING WITH COLE A & X JAWS

1. The “A” SIDE of the COLE JAW marked A & X is used primarily for all single side House and Padlock keys. There are some instances where Double Sided keys may be clamped, such as H-32 and H-33 (Hillman # H-50 and H-51 Ford keys) where milled area allows for enough material for jaw to grip key securely. SEE EXAMPLE 1.

2. The “X” SIDE of the COLE JAW is used primarily for DOUBLE SIDED AUTOMOTIVE KEYS, SEE EXAMPLE 2. Notice how the bottom “V” edge on the Jaw ts into the milled edge of the key. This is the proper method for clamping keys of this nature.

INTRODUCING THE HILLMAN 4-WAY JAW

Hillman is proud to introduce our newly engineered 4-way jaw. This jaw is designed to rmly hold even those difcult domestic and import auto key styles with a narrow center milling.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

All keys are arranged in alphanumerical order by the Hillman key style number. For each key style, this guide identies the correct jaw side and how to reference the key in the jaw; in addition, for those key styles that require special attention, further information is footnoted at the bottom of each page.

USING THE 4-WAY JAWS

A Jaw SideMany keys cut on the “A” side of the jaw, like KW-1, are positioned in the jaw with the back edge of the key blade resting against the center of the jaw as shown in gure 1.

Other keys, like H-60, are positioned with the milled edge of the key blade resting on top of the jaw as shown in gure 2. Keys which are positioned in the jaw with the milled edge of the key resting on top of the jaw are identied with a footnote.

B Jaw SideAll keys cut onb the “B” side of the jaw, like M-2, are positioned in the jaw with the back edge of the key blade resting against the center of the jaw as show in gure 3.

C Jaw SideKeys cut on the “C” side of the jaw, like MZ-27, are positioned in the jaw by placing the “V” on the jaw inside the center miling on the key as shown in gure 4.

D Jaw SideKeys cut on the “D” side of the jaw, like B-86, are positioned in the jaw by placing the “V” on the jaw inside the center milling on the key as shown in gure 5.

USING THE JAW LIFT LEVER

The jaw lift lever, as shown in gure 6, is designed to help the user more quickly rotate between jaw sides. To use the lift lever, rst turn the wing nut one rotation with your left hand after removing a key. Then, depress the lift lever with your right thumb and rotate the jaw with your left hand to the desired jaw side.

SHOULDER REFERENCE KEYS

Shoulder referenced keys are aligned in the jaw by butting the shoulder of the original key and the key blank against the left edges of the gauge fork as shown in gure 7.

TIP REFERENCED KEYS

Tip referenced keys are aligned in the jaw by butting the tip of the original key and the key blank against the left edges of the gauge fork as shown in gure 8.

For more information on how to use the Hillman 4000 and to properly reference a key in the jaw, refer to your Hillman 4000 Instruction Manual.

The following reference contains the key blank numbers often used on General Products (desks, garage door locks, etc.), Product Manufacturers (Fridgidaire, GE, Craftsman etc.) and Lock Manufacturers (Ilco, Master, etc.). This is only a guide and can reduce the number of possible matches. Keyways and therefore keys are subject to change. Reference charts for boats, campers, gas caps, less popular import/motorcycles, trucks and snowmoliles are located on pages 14 to 16.

STEPS TO KEY IDENTIFICATION:

1. Find the name on the customer’s key.

2. Find the Hillman reference number directly to the right.

3. Use Key Index on page 18 to nd the page number for the key prole for comparison or go directly to merchandiser to see the actual key.
