Technical specs: initial vs final efficacy

It is always key to compare the final light output of the system.

For LED fittings it is crucial to get the final „hot“ light output and not the initial LED value.

Technical specs: colour rendering index

Typical CRI values

LED 65 - 95

The higher the CRI the lower the system efficacy

The CRI is reflecting the average value basing on standard reference values

R9 = 27,8R12 = 62,9

R9 = 0 R12 = 95

Technical specs: colour rendering index

The LED binning assures the homogeneity from LED to LED as well as the homogeneity of the complete installation

MacAdam steps (SDCM): Area in which no colour difference is visibleColour differences gets visible above the value of 3

Only a MacAdams Steps value is granting a good homogeneity of an LED based lighting system.

Fine binning exampleNote : a binning indication in +/- Kelvin gives only a limited indication

Light output maintenance / lifetime ratio

Technical specs: system lifetime

Example and interpretation of an LED lifetime curveTechnical specs : system lifetime

A good thermal management of the LED systems grants the specified/extrapolated lifetime value.

Temperature control=

Lifetime control

Good thermomanagement· More light output· Longer lifetime

More current· More light output· Shorter lifetime

A

More temperature· Shorter lifetime· Less light output

A topic to consider with attention

• An LED based system can show very attractive technical features

• In the application the result can unfortunately be very disappointing for the users

• LED light sources have a very punctual light emission surface creating very high luminance values

• It is very important to consider this topic when considering an LED lighting system especially when it comes to illuminate work spaces

Technical specs: glare

Product features

• Technical specs• Quality – Safety - Warranty• Price

Product features : Quality, Safety, Warranty

Objectively:• Technical specifications• Precision of documents• Certified light distribution curves• Warranty claim and conditions

Subjectively:• Reliability / experience of provider• Provider profile : manufacturer or distributor

There is no “golden rule”, nevertheless...

Objectively:• Technical specifications• Performance required• Warranty claim and conditions

Subjectively:• Reliability / experience of provider• Provider profile : manufacturer or distributor

There is no “good price” but always a “right price”...

Thanks for your attention!
