Our FHS Values are respect, connect and challenge

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Over the past week there has been so many wonderful and exciting cultural activities going on in all classes in preparation for our upcoming Cultural Festival in Term 4. Wishing all families of FHS a safe and happy holiday break. See you all back after the break on Monday 14th October.

Key Competencies

These are part of the New Zealand School Curriculum and as such every school in New Zealand has the responsibility to help students develop these to the best of their ability.

What are the Key Competencies?Key Competencies are the capabilities people have, and need to develop, to live and learn today and in the future.

The competencies are;● Thinking● Relating to Others● Using language, symbols and texts● Managing self● Participating and contributing

These key competencies encompass knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that already strongly align with our school vision and values.

Follow this link to discover why key competencies are important for future employment and well being.

At Forrest Hill School it is part of our Strategic Plan to develop what these competencies look like at our school and how we teach these important attributes throughout the different year levels.

Each week in term 4 we will write a key focus in the newsletter on a Key Competency and include snapshots of how teachers are incorporating important learning around these at different year levels.

It is our aim that our community will have a deeper insight into these key skills so that when reports come home at the end of the term you will gain greater clarity and understanding on how your child is developing their competencies (teacher assessed) and their personal view (child self assessment) against the core indicators under each competency. You can refer to the mid year reports for a direct comparison and progress made.

Nurturing growth for a lifetime of learning

On Wednesday the Year 2 children came to school in traditional cultural dress and made a plate of eats representing their culture for our shared lunch. We had such a wonderful day learning about all the different cultures and traditions in Year 2, and tasting international delicacies. The children got to make traditional New Zealand Lolly Cake to enjoy afterwards a sweet treat! Before taking part in the feast, the children were led in a Karakia by Mrs. Litton, Mrs. Stratton and Miss. Higgins. It was a wonderful day of celebration and we would like to thank our Year 2 parents and caregiver community for helping to make it all possible. Whakawhetai!
