Welcome to the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan’s “Northernmost” experi-

ence. Around here, north isn’t just a direc-tion, it’s a destination! Our woods and waters overflow with recreational opportu-nities, and our towns provide shopping, din-ing and many other activities that celebrate the culture and history of the Keweenaw area. We provide a clean, healthy environ-ment with a side of small-town flair.

The Keweenaw Peninsula truly is a four-season destination. Drop by in the spring to witness the lushness of our waterfalls, and watch the hawk migration from Brockway Mountain; in the summer to kayak, swim and fish our endless waters and mountain bike our forested hillsides; in the fall to experience the overwhelming beauty of our autumn colors; and in the winter to take advantage of our 200-plus inches of snow and our hundreds of miles of groomed snowmo-bile trails, world-class groomed cross-coun-try ski trails, and our excellent downhill skiing opportunities.

Our local communities enrich the Keweenaw Peninsula with their historical significance, distinctive visitor attractions,

endless outdoor adventures, unique busi-ness districts and rugged beauty. The area’s two universities — Michigan Technological University in Houghton and Finlandia University in Hancock — provide a plethora of metropolitan activities, from casual out-door concerts to auditorium symphonies. Add to that the many events held at the his-toric Calumet Theatre, the Pine Mountain Music Festival, and the many artists who call this rugged finger of land home, and you have an area that has historically been referred to as “an island of civilization in the woods of the U.P.”

For centuries, Native Americans used Portage Lake as a shortcut during their

canoe travels along Lake Superior. Because the western end of the waterway across the Keweenaw Peninsula was blocked, they “portaged” their canoes a mile or so over-land; thus the word Keweenaw, or “place where we make a shortcut on foot,” came into being.

Early immigrants came to the area to work in the copper mines or for the logging industry; while logging still continues in the area to this day, the last copper mine closed in 1969. With the closing of the last mine,

the local economy underwent a readjust-ment in which many manufacturing and ser-vice companies either closed or downsized.

The sister towns of Hancock and Houghton have education-driven econo-mies and are considered by many to be one college town. Between the months of September and May, their combined student population adds an additional 20 percent to Houghton County’s overall population.

Michigan Tech University was founded in 1885 in response to the first mining boom in the United States — the clamor for Michigan’s copper, which preceded

the California Gold Rush by several years. During its beginning years, Michigan Tech trained and educated mining engineers. Today, the university offers a range of certificates and degrees.

Finlandia University, founded in 1896, is the only private school in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church and boasting a proud Lutheran and Finnish heritage, the univer-sity takes pride in being the only institution of higher learning in America to be founded by Finns.

Copper Country Intermediate School District

The Copper Country ISD provides special support services, special help and special equipment to educators in its 13 constituent local school districts in Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw counties and serves as a liai-son between the districts and the Michigan Department of Education. The CCISD offers programs for students with disabilities; pro-fessional development for teachers/admin-istrators; career/technical education classes; adult education; BRIDGE, an alternative high school; early childhood programs; a regional educational media center; teaching/instruc-tional materials; and the Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education.

About the UniversityTech has five colleges and schools that

offer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs in the arts, humanities, social sci-ences, business and economics, computing, engineering, forestry and environmental sci-ence, sciences, and technology.

One of the hallmarks of a Tech educa-tion is the Enterprise Program. Unique in the nation, it provides students the oppor-tunity to work on real-world projects for industry partners.

Michigan Tech’s Advanced Technology Development Complex has space for

student design and research and is charged with transferring technology to the commercial sector.

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts, one of the finest such facilities in the Upper Midwest, offers year-long enter-tainment, including both professional and student productions. Even without a music major, Tech has seven outstanding musical groups.

Michigan Tech’s A.E. Seaman Museum, the official mineral museum of the State of Michigan, is located in the Electrical Energy Resources Center.

Tech competes in Division I ice hockey as part of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Tech students also compete in Division II sports in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, includ-ing men’s and women’s basketball, Nordic skiing, track and field, cross-country, tennis, football, and women’s volleyball.

Each year Tech celebrates Winter Carnival, a storied midwinter event that fea-tures incredible snow statues that students craft for up to a month.

With students from more than 80 countries, the university is a multicultural

community and stages the Parade of Nations and an ethnic food festival each fall.

Located in Houghton, the university owns a downhill ski area and a golf course close to campus, as well as a 600-acre rec-reational forest adjoining campus that has 25 miles of trails for running, hiking, biking, snowshoeing and Nordic skiing. Houghton

Finlandia University Located in Hancock, Finlandia is dedi-

cated to academic excellence, spiritual growth and service. The university serves 587 students on two campuses.

Founded in 1896 as Suomi College, Finlandia is one of 28 U.S. colleges and universities affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is the only private, not-for-profit institution of higher education in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Finlandia is also the only university in North America founded by Finnish immigrants.

Finlandia is fully accredited and offers bachelor’s degree programs in business administration, fine arts, nursing, elemen-tary education, rural human services, liberal studies and ACE! (Arts, Culture and the Environment). Associate degree programs include applied science, criminal justice, physical therapist assistant and general stud-ies. Students enjoy small classes, caring faculty and personal attention.

The university’s educational philosophy emphasizes practical application of knowl-edge, imagination, entrepreneurial thinking, real-life problem solving and the ethical use of knowledge — all in the context of a global society and environment that are character-ized by change. enrich student life. Finlandia also serves as an educational and cultural resource for the local community as well as the nationwide Finnish-American community.

The Portage Campus, opened in 2005, is home to the International School of Art and Design and the Lily I. Jutila Center for Global Design and Business (CGDB). The CGDB, in part, encourages sustainable busi-ness practices and fosters regional economic development.

Finlandia is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. The Lions men’s and women’s athletic teams compete in basketball, base-ball, cross-country running, hockey, Nordic skiing, soccer, softball and volleyball.

Students in the International Schools of Business and Art & Design can participate in overseas educational exchange programs at 10 schools of higher learning in the European Union.

Community outreach includes North Wind Books, the Finnish American Heritage Center (museum, art gallery, theater and archives), and the Finnish American Reporter, a monthly English-language journal featur-ing news of interest to Finnish Americans.

Keweenaw National Historical Park

Keweenaw National Historical Park was established to preserve, protect and interpret the natural and cultural resources relating to the copper mining industry. The park boundaries are centered in Calumet and the Quincy Mine area in Hancock, but sev-eral other historic sites, from lighthouses to mansions, are Heritage sites helping to focus and interpret the rich industrial and cultural story.

Quincy MineThe rich mining history can be enjoyed

by visiting the Quincy Mine, the deep-est mine in North America and a promi-nent landmark in Hancock. Here one can tour the largest steam hoist in the world, underground workings, a cog-rail tram ride, mineral displays and scale models interpret-ing the mining process.

Eagle Harbor LighthouseOne of the most photographed spots

in the Keweenaw, this historic complex is a maritime history museum for the entire

Calumet TheatreThe booming village of Red Jacket

(Calumet) built a 1,200-seat opera house as a part of the town hall. Today the oldest municipally built opera house (it opened on March 20, 1900) presents many national and local performances each year. Tours of the restored landmark are available.

Copper Harbor LighthouseThe Copper Harbor Lighthouse is part

of the Fort Wilkins historic complex. The lighthouse is furnished as if the keeper were nearby. A tour boat takes visitors to this sce-nic spot from the Copper Harbor Marina.

Estivant Pines Wilderness Nature Sanctuary

A 504-acre remnant of old growth maple and white pine makes this a popular hike. Over three miles of loop trails take you through these massive Eastern White Pine monarchs of the Keweenaw. To hike through trees 4 to 5 feet in diameter and 400 to 600 years old is a great experience. The sanctu-ary is located three miles south of Copper Harbor and is owned by the Michigan Nature Association, a private, nonprofit preserva-tion group.

A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum

This world-renowned mineral collection is located on the Michigan Technological University campus and specializes in beautiful private collections from early Keweenaw residents and collectors. The copper and associated mineral specimens are displayed the way they were in the mine owner’s living room.

Isle Royale National Park

This pristine remote wilderness island, located 40 miles from the Keweenaw in Lake Superior, is popular among hikers, kayakers, boaters, sailors and anyone seeking a one-of-a-kind wilderness adventure. The island is reachable from Houghton and Copper Harbor and has complete lodge and marina facilities. Isle Royale is home to several hundred moose and several packs of wolves, which scientists have studied for over 50 years, making it the oldest predator–prey study in the world. As an International

Biosphere Reserve, Isle Royale attracts visi-tors and scientists from around the world.

Lake SuperiorThe Keweenaw is surrounded by Lake

Superior. The clear cold waters of the lake have shaped the Keweenaw’s rugged basalt, sand beaches and sandstone cliffs into majes-tic scenes revered by all. Lake Superior’s influence on the weather produces record snows averaging over 200 inches a year in winter as well as mild summers, adding to the distinct four seasons.

Historical OverviewPrior to the late 1960s, the economy of Houghton and Keweenaw counties

was dominated by natural resource extraction, including copper mining and logging. With the closing of the last copper mine in 1969, the local economy underwent a readjustment in which many manufacturing and service companies either closed their doors or downsized. Community leaders realized the need to create a revitalized economy and, beginning in 1985, undertook an aggressive economic development initiative to assist local entrepreneurs in creating new companies across a variety of economic sectors, to commercialize technologies being developed at Michigan Tech, and to promote the Keweenaw’s high qual-ity of life to tourists and to entrepreneurs wanting to relocate to the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula.

To accomplish this, the Keweenaw community has developed a compre-hensive set of economic development tools to help entrepreneurs grow local companies. These tools include an array of business counseling services; small business revolving loan funds; tax-free industrial parks, known as Renaissance Zones; high-speed Internet services; ready access to student and faculty exper-tise at both Michigan Technological University and Finlandia University; labor force training; and improved air service through Mesaba Northwest Airlink.

Economic Expansion & DiversificationThis strategy has paid off handsomely. A large number of new, home-grown

manufacturing, service and retail businesses have started up and expanded, including the spin-off of new technologies from MTU. Unlike the past, the Keweenaw Peninsula is now characterized by a relatively large number of smaller companies diversified across different economic sectors and exploiting market niches. In response to this growth, the health care sector has expanded

dramatically, and the Keweenaw now serves as a regional medical center. Further, both Michigan Tech and Finlandia University have grown both their student and faculty populations and their research programs, bringing many new dollars into the area.

Creation of a Technology SectorMost recently, the Keweenaw has been designated as one of only

11 high-technology magnet zones in the State of Michigan. The local tech park, known as the SmartZone, has established three high-tech incubator facilities, offers business services designed specifically for technology-based businesses, and has helped over 70 high-tech entrepreneurs to create and expand local companies that now employ 500 highly paid workers. Further, established outside companies are beginning to establish branch engineering offices in the Keweenaw — a process known as rural outsourcing — to take advantage of technology talent at Michigan Tech and SmartZone services.

Future Economic TrendsCurrently, the Keweenaw Peninsula economy has growth oppor-

tunities in five areas:

1. Startups and expansions of manufacturing, service and retail firms by local entrepreneurs.

2. A growing technology sector fueled by research, intel-lectual property and corporate relationships at Michigan Technological University.

3. Business relationships with Finnish companies that are interested in entering the U.S. market by establishing branch operations in the Keweenaw’s technology-supportive, cost-friendly environment, which includes several Finnish- language speakers.

4. Attraction of branch offices of established outside companies that want access to Michigan Tech’s technological resources and the Keweenaw Peninsula’s relatively lower cost of doing business.

5. Expansion of the tourism sector, including the marketing of silent sports.
