Maestro Rhodes welcomes two old friends for a November celebration, pianists Kathryn Brown and Deborah Moriarty performing Mozart’s Concerto for 2 Pianos. Maestro Rhodes gets into the act by narrating the witty poems of Ogden Nash which accompany Saint-Saëns two-piano/orchestral zoological ode. We visit the music capitals of Vienna and Paris with Mozart and Satie.

The incomparable music of Beethoven will get the evening off to a rousing start with another SSO première, his Leonore Overture No. 1.

On this night, you will also hear Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4. Hector Berloiz was so enamored with the second movement he claimed that it was the work of Michael the Archangel!

The electrifying Joyce Yang returns to Symphony Hall for “The American” piano concerto, Gershwin's Concerto in F, which features the amazing brass section of the SSO. The orchestra undertakes two masterworks…the seldom heard Antar Symphony of Rimsky-Korsakov which, like his Scheherazade, is a middle-eastern themed work; and the yardstick for every major orchestra, Richard Strauss’ epic and virtuosic Don Juan.

Celebrate our incredible 70 year history with two great American works and a rare masterwork by one of our favorites! The exuberant American Festival Overture by Schuman opens the program, after which the SSO Chorus joins the orchestra for Leonard Bernstein’s moving call for peace, Chichester Psalms. The orchestra commemorates the occasion with the performance of the final symphony of one of our favorite composers, Rachmaninoff’s dramatic and beautiful Symphony No. 3.
