STAINMORE WI Philip Caine was the speaker for our September meeting. Philip enthralled us with his breath-taking accounts of managing catering and accommodation in the oil industry. He began his career in Barrow, then moved on to Algeria, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Baghdad, Dubai and Iraq. Since `retiring` he has pub-lished 7 fictional novels based on his time in the Middle East. We have no speaker for the October meeting as it will be our AGM, but in October we are looking forward to a cheese talk and tasting with John Natlacen, a cheese man from Kirkby Lonsdale. Stainmore WI meets at the Methodist Church Schoolroom in Brough on the second Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are always welcome. D Clatworthy

Thank You What a fantastic day! Thank you to everyone who helped to make it a great day. Brough looked amazing with the bikes, bunting, flags and the scarecrows. The atmosphere was carnival like with the
help of Matthew Tiffany, the juggler and street entertainer, Leanne Duerden, the singer, and Bill Hutchinson with his vintage bicycles. I hope you all enjoyed the event and found it exciting. Pat Jones. Brough Parish Council
CLIC Sargent Thank you very much to everyone who supported our table top and coffee morning on Saturday 24th August. We raised £490.80 for CLIC Sargent, thank you all so much. Rachel Mandale-Chapman

Next Air Ambulance Drop-in Collection 3rd November The next drop-in collection will be on Sunday, November 3rd, when Brough Memorial Hall will be open at the usual GNAA drop-in times of 12 noon to 1pm and then in the early evening from 5pm to 7pm. The usual items continue to be welcomed, that is, bedding (sheets, blankets, duvets, pillows etc), clothing (any material including leather), belts, handbags and shoes (please fasten shoes together in pairs), books (in a box if more than six), printer cartridges small or large, and mobile phones (working or not, but for your own security, please remove the SIM card if you know how). If you can’t manage the 3rd November, but have something for us, please phone me on 42135 to discuss alternatives. If you need bags for your offerings (and they DO appreciate it if their official bags are used) I have a large supply so please give me a phone call on 42135 to agree how you can collect them. Yes, I know it is the weekend before Bonfire Night, when many people have pre-5th fireworks, so the additional effort you might make to give support will be very much appreciated. Also, if at any other time you have special circumstances which would result in having to store a large number of bags (say 12 or more) till the next drop-in (if you are doing a house clearance before moving, or after a death), please call me to arrange bags and a subsequent special visit from GNAA’s van at a time and place to suit your convenience. This is something we have done a number of times. Dave Williams 017683 42135
New Defibrillator for Warcop Warcop Parish Council recently decided to use some of its funds to purchase a fourth defibrillator to extend coverage in Warcop in case of emergencies. It will be located in the old BT phone box, which we have been discussing what to do with for some time. We hope its central location will offer greater access for other parts of the village. At some point we hope to run some defibrillator training at the Parish Hall for local residents who would like to know how to use the defibs. We now have defibrillators in Bleatarn on the Deighton’s house, in Sandford on the side of David White’s farm and two in Warcop – one at the Parish Hall and one in the old phone box.

Fitter Me is a gentle, seated and walking exercise class for everyone. It is also fun and you only do what you feel you can. However, to keep this going we do need people to support it. The next class is on Thursday 3rd October from 10.30 to 11.30am in Brough Methodist church schoolroom. After that we will decide on future dates. Heather 42476

St Michael’s Bells Appeal Many thanks to everyone who bought one of the new quiz sheets recently. Fifty entries came from as far afield as Hampshire, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Scotland. There were thirteen entries which were completely correct. The winners came from Darlington and Winton. We raised over £160 for the bell restoration fund. If you want the answers to either this quiz, or the previous one, just let me know. Look out for another quiz sheet soon.

Warcop Bus timetable Our weekly Friday minibus service to Appleby has been extended to include more local communities from Friday 4th October. The aim is to cover areas previously included in the 574 Robinsons service so elsewhere the bus will go out to several fellside villages as well as parts of Appleby to allow residents to get into Appleby for a couple of hours. The timings for Sandford and Warcop are slightly different but the connection to the 563 Stagecoach bus to Penrith at 09:58 will continue, as will the collection on its return at 2:20 from The Sands in Appleby. There will also be a 12:00 pick up for those just wanting to have a morning in Appleby. The price will be the same but passengers will need to obtain a prepayment card from the Heritage Centre in Appleby to cover the cashless payment for each journey. The Sandford/Warcop service will now include Great Asby and Ormside but the bus will only operate if passengers phone or email the Heritage Centre by Thursday at the latest on 017683 53350. The scheme only operates by means of a team of volunteer drivers and we are always looking to increase this team to share the driving load so if you are interested, please ring Karen at the Heritage Centre on the number above. As with all bus services, this one will only survive if sufficient passengers use it on a regular basis so please sign up for your card and enjoy good company, beautiful scenery and without the need to drive on a Friday!
A poster with the new timetable is inside this edition of The Way.
Warcop and Sandford W.I. Mrs Maureen Heron (President) welcomed members to the September meeting and introduced our guest speaker Kate Hodgson. Kate spoke about the subject of Reflexology. She explained the history of reflexology and its numerous benefits and the importance of using the treat-ment as part of a whole body management. Kate then gave a demonstration of reflexology massage on Mrs Heron who enjoyed the relaxing experience. Members then were invited by Kate to give each other a hand massage which is very calming, is not invasive and can improve the quality of life. Mrs Heron gave the vote of thanks. Refreshments were served by Mrs Callaby and Mrs Thornton and a short Business Meeting followed. Minutes of the last meeting of the 3rd July were signed as a true record. Members were reminded about our forthcoming Coffee Morning at Appleby Public Hall on Saturday 19th October. Members were also happy to contribute and fill the “Boxes of Hope” Shoe Boxes at our November Meeting following the AGM and to arrange the Dementia Friends Training event at one of our meetings. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 2nd October when Allyson Jenyon will be our guest speaker her topic is “Eden Animal Rescue”. Valerie Brook (Secretary)

Do you remember the Brough Pageant in 1990? Next year will be the 30th Anniversary.
A group of volunteers are gathering to try and organise something on a similar scale next June.
The provisional date is 12-14th June 2020. Would you like to be involved?
We are seeking hard working and committed volunteers to help out with a number of roles. Maybe you can remember what happened, when and where? Maybe you were on the team in 1990 or had a starring role? If you would like to get involved in any capacity then please get in touch with [email protected] or call me on 07890 756760 We need advisors, car parkers, health and safety, admin, finance, fund raisers, event management, promoters and advertising, stewards and caterers. The group hopes to have a re-enactment at the Castle, an exhibition in the Church, lots of different types of music, bands, street entertainers and side shows. A farmers market, dress up, chariot race, pet show. Street Party, Barn dance and BBQ. We welcome lots of other ideas if you have any. It is hoped that this will be a whole community event with different aspects of weekend being held in different areas of Brough and Church Brough. The recent bike race and Scarecrow Festival have proved that Brough can
come together and ‘pull off’ a really good show. Lets do it again and make it as
memorable as the last one!
Brough Methodist Church Brough Thursday Club dates for October are 17th and 31st from 10am to 12noon in Brough Methodist Church schoolroom which has disabled access. This is a FREE fortnightly event, including refreshments, for everyone but we do need more people to come and join us. We play dominoes, sit and knit/sew, chat and generally have fun. We often have an old-fashioned singsong with Elvyn on keyboards at the end. Our next Coffee Morning is on Saturday 14th October from 10.00am to 11.30-ish in Brough Methodist Church Schoolroom and is in aid of Cumbria Community Foundation Winter Warmth Appeal, helping older people in Cumbria stay warm and well this coming winter. Thank you for the donations of food for the food bank; to those who have knitted blankets and teddies; and for all the other items left in our porch. For more details, please contact Heather on 42476.

From the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald October 1919
Fine autumn plus colours, National rail strike for more pay, 26th Sept – mid Oct. Coal shortage during it.
Brough Hill, 30th September, fine; lots there. The Brough PM Circuit’s refreshment tent did well.

Walk of the Month – Upper Swaledale
Both a short and a long walk are described this month from a start point just over the border in the Yorkshire Dales. The short walk is an easy 4 miles, and the longer walk is 8 miles and a little more strenuous, but well worth the effort to see the waterfalls at Keld and views over the dales. Both walks can be wet underfoot, and a compass should be carried on the longer walk in case the mist comes down. Drive via Kirkby Stephen to Nateby and turn left in the village centre on the Reeth road. Follow this wonderful scenic road all the way over into Swaledale and park on the right at the bottom of the last steep hill and just before the bridge over the River Swale.
Cross the road to a stile and follow the footpath to Ravenseat straight up the field to a stile. Continue past a barn to another stile and then to a second stile. After passing a second barn cross another stile, and 50 yds further on veer right down a gully and then pass another barn. Continue to reach a lane and follow this to Ravenseat where there are toilets, picnic benches and cafe (Restricted opening times, to make sure or book a cream tea tel. 01748 886387). Cross the bridge before the farm and turn right towards a 3-way signpost. Turn right sp Keld, and after a gate keep near the stream across marshy ground before going up to a metal gate and then to two barns. The wet grassy path continues past another barn and crosses the hillside above a steep wooded gorge to a boundary gate. Continue by the wall and a steep fenced drop and then across the hillside sp. Keld. After passing right of a walled area, follow two finger-posts down to a barn, and follow the track from here past a cottage and down to the river and road. If doing the short walk continue down to the main road, turn right and follow the road back to the start point, otherwise turn left at a marker post just after a gate and follow this path for ½ mile to a road. Turn right at the road and immediately left and follow the track for ½ mile to East Stonesdale. Turn right here and right at the bottom of the hill by the waterfall (good picnic spot}. Walk down to a footbridge over the river and up the steep bank to the right and turn left at the top. After 200 yds., and immediately after a gate, turn right into a field (no signpost). Turn left and follow the fence up to a gap stile and then to a gate. Turn right and follow the wall to the second of two gates. Follow the wall again

and then down between walls to a barn. Veer left to a gate and continue down to a gate and a track. Cross the track to a gate by a barn and follow this path by the wall for ¼ mile to a signpost and a gate in the wall. Drop down to a gap stile and descend the next field diagonally below rough woodland to a wall and follow this to a stile by a large tree. Cross a causeway over marshy ground to a gate, and walk up the field to follow a wall on the left and then up to a barn. Veer left up to a gate onto a road. Turn left and after a bend turn right after a phone-box. Turn immediately right through a gate and follow the old wall uphill. After passing a lime-kiln go through a gate and follow the path uphill round a depression and up to a gate. From here the path is easily followed across the moor. Keep by the right -hand wall and maintain a north-west direction. When you see the dark shape of Black Hill ahead, the route follows the left side of a shallow valley before meeting a wall running up the right side of the valley. Look for a gap-stile in this wall and follow the other side of the wall to a gated stile. Follow the path across the moor and over another stile to a small valley. Cross a log bridge over a stream and walk up to a track. Look for a small cairn that marks the continuation of the path, this time in a WNW direction. After three more stiles turn right by the wall to drop steeply to a gate on to the road. Cross the bridge to bring you back to the start point. Roamin Robin
