Kettering-Moraine Branch Library Project Details for Artists A Dayton Metro Library RFP for Artwork Open To: Regional Artists (250 mile radius of Dayton, OH) Commission Amount: $20,000 is budgeted for all artworks at this Branch Entry Open Date: Friday, April 10, 2015 Entry Deadline: Friday, May 22, 2015 Commissions Announced: By June 30, 2015 Project Completion: June/July 2016 Project Summary: The Dayton Metro Library (DML) and The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) seek to commission site-specific pieces of artwork for one or more spaces in the Kettering-Moraine Branch Library with a targeted opening in July 2016. Artists are invited to propose newly created artworks conceived in response to one of the two artworks below, held in the DAI permanent collection. The inspiration pieces were selected from the results of voting by community members, and particularly patrons of the Kettering-Moraine Library on their two favorites of five DAI artworks. Artists may develop a response to one or both artworks. Any aspect can be utilized as source material for the submission (color, material, style, content, composition, etc.). From the submissions, the DML ReImagining Works Committee will select the winning artists, who will meet with DML and DAI staff, architects, and construction representatives to confirm plans for the commission. The artists will be required to sign a Letter of Agreement by July 31, 2015 and complete the work by June or July 2016, as determined by the final construction timetable. Large Chest, Japanese, (Edo period), 18th century, Lacquer on wood with gilt, pigments and metal fittings. This large lacquered chest is a fascinating and unique work of art, but not for the reasons you might think. Research shows that the arrangement of the seals, or mons, don’t match up with history… this chest was produced as export ware for foreigners unfamiliar with samurai culture in Edo period Japan. Rationale for inclusion: This object speaks to the long-held tradition of imagery and symbols moving from one purpose to another in creating artworks. Project Summary: The Dayton Metro Library (DML) and The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) seek to commission site-specific pieces of artwork for one or more spaces in the Kettering-Moraine Branch Library with a targeted opening in July 2016.

Celebration, Christopher Ries (b. 1952), American, 1998 Cut and polished optical glass. From afar, this crystal-shaped form appears a mere sliver of material at times, or takes the shape of a cornucopia. As one circles the object, the multiple facets cut into the exterior refract light and create bending, pulsing patterns. Ries works within a factory setting, utilizing manufactured material to accomplish great artistry.

Rationale for inclusion: Referencing the community’s innovative manufacturing past and future, this piece speaks to the expansiveness of mind that combines technical skill and artistry.

Artistic Goals of the Project: The Kettering-Moraine Branch Library is one of the smaller, but busiest facilities with avid readers and well-attended programs for children, teens and adults. Located on Far Hills Avenue in Kettering, it has high visibility from the heavy daily traffic on that major north-south route. The Branch will undergo an extensive renovation to make better use of the landlocked site. The center front section of the building will be replaced with floor-to-ceiling glass, windows will be added to increase the natural light, and a drop ceiling will be removed to create a sense of spaciousness. Proposed artworks should reflect the distinctive personality of this location; resonate with people of all ages and backgrounds; inspire collaboration, learning and creativity; and contribute to an inviting, engaging, and stimulating environment. The committee welcomes, but in no way requires, submissions that relate to the mission of Dayton Metro Library or may provide a springboard for educational programming and/or current or future collaborative learning opportunities. Practical Considerations: The artwork must be durable and easily maintained. Some potential locations for artwork will be accessible to Library patrons. Art opportunities at the Kettering Moraine Branch include the large Marketplace and several large interior walls. The attached renderings illustrate these potential locations for artwork along with their current dimensions. Architectural plans are still subject to revision. Submissions: Proposals will only be accepted electronically, as a single pdf file of no more than 10 pages and no more than 10 MB. Proposals must include the following and be organized in the order below:

1. A sketch and narrative explanation of the proposed artwork

2. Explanation of relationship between source material and proposed artwork

3. Size range for suggested location with maximum budget

4. Four to six images of completed artwork, preferably of similar scale and material

5. Brief artist’s CV or biography (2 pages maximum)

Send completed proposals to Susan Anable, Reimagining Works Project Manager for The Dayton Art Institute, at [email protected] by Friday, May 22, 2015. Additional Information: Ms. Anable will hold an informational meeting for artists on Saturday, April 18, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at DAI. Danette Windle of Ruetschle Architecture will also be there to answer questions. Please enter through the Rike (business) entrance of the museum. Additionally, Ms. Anable will schedule individual, 15-minute phone calls with artists on Monday, April 20 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. R.S.V.P. for the meeting and/or schedule a time to discuss your proposal or ask questions by emailing [email protected].
