properties and homes in harm’s way. Gabriel suffered a mental lapse and fearing the consequences attempted to commit suicide. He was later taken to a psychiatric ward where it is unclear if he passed away or escaped. Juan Gabriel’s mother who had 9 other children, never heard from her husband again.

Victoria Valadez Rojas, Juan Gabriel’s mother, moved her family to Morelia and then Juarez, Chihuahua where Juan Gabriel lived the remainder of his childhood. While in boarding school he befriended teacher Juan Contreras, who became Juan Gabriel’s mentor and guardian teaching him to play guitar and to write. As a result, Juan Gabriel composed his first song at age 13 starting an amazing musical career.

Juan Gabriel didn’t have it easy, he worked tirelessly writing music to the point that he had over 100 songs by the time he was 18. Juan Gabriel eventually set to perform in local nightclubs and television under the name “Adan Luna”. After many attempts he finally earned a spot in a band called “Prisioneros del Ritmo” and performed at “El Noa Noa” a place that would later be immortalized in one of Juan Gabriel’s most popular songs of the same title.

Eventually as Juan Gabriel began to gather a fan base he began to work part-time as a backup singer for renowned artists like Angelica Maria, Leo Dan, and Roberto Jordan. Juan Gabriel’s life was put on hold at the age of 19 when after traveling to Mexico City he was falsely accused of theft and incarcerated. The time spent in jail later provided the inspiration for songs like “Es Mi Vida” and “Noche a Noche”. Juan Gabriel spent 18 months in jail and was released on grounds of lacking evidence to support the crime.

In writing this article I tried to picture what my life would have been like without Juan Gabriel and all I could picture was a cold desolate lonely place. Growing up, my Saturday mornings weren’t complete without some “JuanGa” playing louder than necessary en el “estereo” while my mom sang along and made some sopes or chilaquiles or some other Mexican deliciousness from scratch. In other words, it was like being in heaven.

Juan Gabriel is music itself. His soft powerful voice is like something out of a dream. His words evoke tears of both joy and sorrow and pull at the heartstrings of your very soul. His ability to connect with his audience is second to none. As with most great artists, Juan Gabriel experienced multiple tragedies at an early age.

Born, Alberto Aguilera Valadez in 1950 Michoacán, Alberto didn’t take on his artistic name of Juan Gabriel until he was 21. “Juan” was in homage to an early mentor who taught him music while in boarding school, and “Gabriel” after his own deceased father, Gabriel Aguilera. Juan Gabriel lost his father when he was only 3 months old. His father who was an agricultural field worker, intended to clear a piece of land by setting fire to the field and lost control of the fire putting various

Shortly after his release, Juan Gabriel was signed to his first recording contract and the rest is shall we say, history. After 25 years in the recording industry, there is not much that Juan Gabriel hasn’t done. He’s travelled the world, sold more than 30 million albums, recorded for and with more than 200 artists, and has reached a success with his unique ballads and rancheras such as “No Tengo Dinero,” “Esta Rosa Roja,” En Esta Primavera,” and “Siempre en mi Mente,” to become one of the most important and revered artists his country has ever seen.

You can see this shining star in the flesh just before Valentine’s Day on February 13, 2015 at the Patriot Center. For tickets and information visit, www.kestadc.com. Use special “Kesta” promo code on Ticketmaster to secure the best seats!

The annual multi-act show, is taking place December 5th just in time to jumpstart your Christmas spirit.

Martin, among others. This year the audience will enjoy a fantastic stage and cutting edge production as a way for the radio station to thank their listeners for their support throughout the year.

“We’re thrilled that 2014 has been turned out to be a great year of spectacular events for SBSE. We are producing ‘Amor A Nuestra Musica’ as a small token of gratitude to our fans,” says VP of SBS Entertainment Lucas Pina.

Also performing is Latin Grammy Nominee, Pablo Alboran performing Live for the first time ever in New York City. And last but certainly not least Natalia Jimenez, will perform a medley of songs from her new album ‘Quedate Con Ella’. Her hit single ‘Creo En Mi’ has been called an inspirational, engaging and exhilarating track. Having set airplay records in multiple countries upon its debut is currently the top song on Billboard’s “Latin Airplay.”

“We are honored that so many artists have chosen to be a part of ‘Amor A Nuestra Musica.’ The music our fans listen too is not only what ‘Amor A Nuestra Musica’ represents. It’s the interaction between the fans and the artist that we love to see Live during every event we produce,” says Radio Revenue Chief & GM of SBS Eric Garcia.

Although ticket prices can be steep for this event, you will rarely get a chance to get as much bang for your buck by seeing artists of this caliber performing on one single stage. Don’t miss your chance to start off your holiday season with good cheer brought to you by Luis Fonsi, Ricardo Montaner, Frank Reyes, KRose, Jesse & Joy, Gloria Trevi and more! POP

• - Donde Jugaran Las Niñas

This punchy rock song has been the catalyst of many controversies earning the status of being one of the most censored songs in Mexico. The band has commented in the past that the song is meant as an anti-establishment call to stand up for oneself and that the word “puto” is defined as “coward.” The song continues to be an anthem for Mexican youth to stand up against oppression and corruption and be heard. It’s also an amazing song to mosh to!

• - Donde Jugaran Las Niñas

This song much like the first choice is epic. It’s angry, it’s fun, it speaks the truth and its lyrics resonate with those who stand for freedom, justice, peace, and equality. Whenever and wherever this song is played the comradery rises and everyone (regardless of what nationality they are from) chants in unison during the final “¡viva México, cabrones! ¡Que se sienta el power mexicano! ¡Que se sienta!, todos juntos como hermanos!” Epic.

• – Apocalypshit

Although Molotov write a lot about justice and equality,

they also love to write about their love for women. Although this is disguised as a fun dance song, Molotov continues with some sexual innuendos and play on words which make them the kings of “el albur” (the double entendre). Chances are what you thought where the lyrics to this song have an entirely different meaning for others. Regardless this song is sexy!

• – Dance and Dense Denso

This anthem says everything you ever wanted to say about racism and being judged for your appearance or ethnicity rather than by your character sung in a catchy ranchero beat. Enough said.

• – Molomix

Molotov covers Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. They keep the melody while changing the lyrics to a “Mexican” translation of Freddy Mercury’s infamous lyrics. The results are both hilarious and genius.

Start rocking to these amazing tunes and get your tickets for Kesta Roxmas today! For more information visit, www.tickeri.com.

ROCK

his Jamaican born rapper with Afro-Caribbean, Portuguese, Chinese and Sephardic Jewish ancestry is more

than just a pretty face who keeps fans getting jiggy with dancehall, reggae and pop. He played for the national water polo team and attended the College of Arts, Science and Technology (now known as the University of Technology) where he studied commerce with the objective of pursuing a career in hotel management. His mother was an artist and both of his parents were athletes. His grandfather was on the first Jamaican men’s national water polo team. Who knew?

Although making music since 1998, Sean Paul has been burning up stages and keeping parties aflame since the release of his second album “Dutty Rock” in 2002. His career soared steadily with songs like “Get Busy”, “Gimme the Light” and “Like Glue”, in addition to chart topper “Baby Boy” with another artist solidifying their career at the time after leading Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé. That song had a global reach as did “I’m Still in Love” with Sasha. I was living in Santiago, Chile at the time and remember recording them on VHS tape to watch over and over again when I was missing home. His videos at that time appeared regularly on MTV and BET. He made appearances on Punk’d, 106th & Park, MTV’s Making the Video and had previously been seen in the movie Belly (1998) for which he recorded a song with DMX & Mr. Vegas.

His manager Jeremy Harding first heard about Sean Paul after hearing about an artist that sounded like a popular dance hall reggae artist and DJ named Super Cat. After working extensively with Sean Paul in the studio, they later went on to record the first album “Stage One” in 2000.

With the release of “The Trinity”, his third album in 2005 his success continued. Then fledgling artist Keyshia Cole was featured on the addictive “Give It Up To Me” featured in the movie Step Up (2006). That album also included “Ever Blazin” and “We Be Burnin” in addition to “Temperature”. In 2006 he was nominated for four awards at the 2006 Billboard Music Awards and earned an American Music Award, beating out

Kanye West and others in the category. His album “Imperial Blaze” came out in 2009. That same year “The Odyssey Mixtape” debuted. His release “Tomahawk Technique” has enjoyed success since 2012 as it was nominated for best reggae album and the single “Got 2 Luv U” featuring Alexis Jordan enjoyed air play.

Sean Paul was on fire once again with the release of “Full Frequency” (2013) featuring Nicki Minaj, Damian Marley, Juicy J, 2 Chainz and Iggy Azalea. When he teamed up with British girl group The Saturdays, the song “What About Us” sold over 100,000 sales in the first week and launching it to #1 on the charts. Throughout his career he has also recorded with Rihanna, Drake, Shaggy, Keri Hilson, Pretty Ricky, Elephant Man, Jay Sean, Farenheit, Little Jon, Busta Rhymes, Chris Brown, Sean Kingston, and Estelle and has been produced by the likes of Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor and Stargate. His music has been recognized the world over from countries including Romania and Japan, Switzerland to Costa Rica where he was the headliner for huge annual festival Fiesta Palmares in 2014. He has been nominated for various awards including the Grammys and Soul Train and has participated in various benefits concerts. He appears in the video game “Def Jam: Fight for NY” on Snoop Dogg’s crew and the sequel “Def Jam: Icon” along with Lil Kim and Flavor Flav, Ludacris, Method Man, Slick Rick and others.

Now Sean Paul is entering the unknown as an independent artist having his contract with Atlantic Records expired. Currently, he is on tour and you can see him in full blaze on Friday, December 12th at Echostage in D.C. Don’t miss this! For tickets and information visit, www.tickeri.com.

of, it inspired me to start composing and that’s how Double Youth was born. I knew right away that that childhood picture would be the cover art of the album.

Kesta: So you wrote the entire album at home?

Helado: Yes, I typically make the music at home. In this case I put the picture on my wall and it was there staring back at me while I worked on different songs on the album. Eventually, I had a vague memory and put this together that the picture was from a County Fair in Miami. As some memories started to come back I wanted to capture the exactness of the moment. Double Youth is about that experience of interpreting those special moments in our life that we’re excited about. That started the ball rolling and then I started to tackle all the pre-created traditions on what are “supposed” to be the important milestones in your life (i.e. weddings, births, funerals, and religious occasions)… and so many other significant things in your life that happen that get pushed to the side.

Kesta: I noticed that the songs fluctuate between English and Spanish? Is that how you hear the songs in your head?

Helado: Because I live in a place where I speak English and Spanish, the aspect of Spanglish and having these two cultures is constantly in my head. Sometimes it feels like the languages are working with and against each other. This duality of being a Hispanic American and speaking both languages and going between these two personas, is what I’m about.

I treat my voice in a general as an instrument in a sense. So I’ll be writing a song and make noises with my mouth to sound out what I want the song to sound

WE RECENTLY CAUGHT UP WITH HELADO NEGRO’S MASTERMIND, ROBERTO CARLOS LANGE, AN ECUADORIAN SINGER AND PRODUCER BORN IN FLORIDA, AND RESIDING IN NEW YORK, WHO ERADICATES CULTURAL BARRIERS AND SEAMLESSLY FLOWS BET WEEN ENGLISH AND SPANISH IN HIS LATEST ALBUM, “DOUBLE YOUTH”.

The release of this latest Helado Negro album is climatic in a similar way that seeing a recurring dream come true would be. The album unfolds patient melodies with rapid techno pulses and inspires dream-like sounds and sequences. Lange took a few minutes to speak with Kesta DC about the journey to making his latest album and why his childhood played such a big role in its existence.

Kesta: Congratulations on your latest album release “Double Youth”. I was enthralled by the inspiration for this album, can you tell me more?

Helado Negro: Thank you. Yes, it started soon after I finished my last record last year. I knew I had an idea in my mind and it really came together in an indirect way one day when I was going through a box of mementos in my parent’s house. There was an old tattered poster of me in a carnival type pic with another boy. It brought about so many questions, because I couldn’t remember the origins of the picture at all. It started an exploration of memories and thoughts of getting older. I started thinking about all the experiences we forget about, the ambiguous trajectory that we end up building memories on top

like. After I’ve done that I go back and add lyrics to the song and depending on the sound I want, it can be in English or Spanish. Speaking both languages is very useful when you’re tying the picture of the music and the lyrics together…

Kesta: Do you have a favorite song off the album?

Helado Negro: I like them all but if I had to pick I guess it would be “Ojos que no ven.” Ojos que no ven was inspired by something a friend of a father said, he used to be able to see and then lost his vision, “the interesting thing about becoming blind

is your friends never get old.” It’s such a lovely thought and an optimistic way to embrace something.

CUMBIA

Argentine cumbia group, Agrupación Marilyn is making its way to the DMV. With hits such as “Me Enamoré”, “Como Duele” and “Su Florcita,” Agrupación Marilyn represents a unique style of cumbia, one that is more romantic, tropical, and testimonial. The group is very adamant that their style is NOT to be confused with cumbia villera, which deals more with themes of drugs, partying, and the street. Agrupación Marilyn’s songs tell the story of everyday life, of violence, abuse, pain and suffering, but also love.

Agrupación Marilyn was born in 2006 and is composed of lead singer, Juan Oscar Rivarola “Juancito” and songwriter, Santiago Ismael Torres (El Lechuga). The group’s band is made up by vocalist, Cristian Rivarola (El Gallo), Arturo Colliva (El Turco) on the keyboard, bass

player, Gastón Gamarra, Mauricio Oyola (Maury) on the timbales, “El Toti” on the drums, and guitarist, Cristian Gamarra (El Changa).

2006 was a big year for the group. Not only did it mark the group’s formation, it was also the year they made their first television debut on the popular Argentine TV series, Pasión de sábado. The appearance achieved the group widespread popularity throughout Argentina, and they began performing live at local dance venues, including Teatro Gran Rex in Buenos Aires alongside Argentine cumbia sensations El Original, Junior, and Los Chicos de Black. That same year, under the record label, Barca Discos, the group released their first album, Historias, which contained 13 tracks, including their hit single, “Su Florcita”, a song which tells the true story of a little girl who was sexually abused and murdered in the city of José C Paz, a

province of Buenos Aires. The group’s name also pays her tribute. The album was a huge success, earning the group their first gold album.

Agrupación Marilyn released their second album, Testimonios y Amores in 2007, which included popular tracks like “Que cobarde”, “Nos enamoramos”, “A Escondidas”, “Me Quede sin ti”, and “Como Duele”. The album, like their first, contains songs with subliminal messages with the aim of trying to avoid repeating some of the same mistakes and stories with future generations. For this reason they sing lyrics such as “Le falta sufrir, le falta llorar, le falta aprender…. Basta de sufrir, basta de llorar (stop suffering, stop crying)”. Their songs encourage listeners to reflect upon society, sometimes seeming “without values, and without morals.” Their songs are ones that anyone can identify with. “En esta vida”, (in this life) stated the group, “¿Quién no ha sufrido por amor?, cuando uno ha estado enamorado (who hasn’t suffered from love when one has been in love?), y si no haz sufrido realmente, no haz amado de verdad” (And if you haven’t really suffered, you haven’t really loved).

The group has performed throughout Argentina, and in 2012, they toured Peru with “La gira Marilyn Tour Verano 2012 en el Perú” in which they serenaded fans in cities including

Lima, Cañete, Chinca, Ica, Nazca, Ayacucho, La merced, Pichanaki, Oxapampa, and Huanuco.

Agrupación Marilyn is currently on tour and will be making its way to the DMV. They will be performing Friday, December 5, 2014 at The Palace Night Club, 13989 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Woodbridge, Virginia 22191. Doors open at 9:00 pm and the show is scheduled to start after 10:30pm. Early bird VIP tickets are available for $35, with private bar and VIP standing near stage. General admission tickets are $25. Jose Alberto Torres Abaru, better known as “Yomo”, was raised in Humacao, Puerto Rico, but was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 17, 1980. Affiliated with Gold Star Music, Hector El Father’s record label, this artist of the popular song “Dejale Caer To’ El Peso,” in addition to “Descara”, “Soledad” and “Mi Mujer” incorporates moving lyrics into his work.

Yomo has come a long way from working as a hotel handyman, a detail that he revealed in an interview with a Peruvian urban music show. He got his big break when he appeared on the album “Sabotage” by OG Black and Master Joe. Then in 2008 he released the album “My Destiny”. With the great success of “Dejale Caer To’ El Peso” recorded with reggaetón Hector “El Father” who helped to lay foundations in the game, Yomo’s career took off and he hasn’t looked back since. He also collaborated with Hector El Father on the song “No Ha Sido Fácil” which also featured Victor Manuelle. He connected with DJ Victor with whom he worked and toured. Furthermore, Yomo worked with Randy & Jowell and Baby Rasta & Gringo on “Amor De Lejos (Remix). He has also collaborated with Jory (of the duo Nova & Jory) and Randy Glock on “La Vida Es Corta”.

Life is, in fact, very short. Enjoy your pre-New Year’s celebration with Yomo on December 27 at Club One in Alexandria, Virginia. For more information, visit www.kestadc.com.

nthony Espinal, better known by his stage name of J’Martin, was born in the neighborhood of Corona located within Queens, New York City, in the mid-1970s. His family moved to Santiago, Dominican Republic, their hometown, when he was

eight, but they later moved back to New York City when Espinal turned 15 years old. When Espinal was just nine years old, he acquired his first job. He worked with his father, Martin Espinal, at a grocery store. As an adult, Espinal would become a grocery store owner himself. Currently, Espinal is the owner and head of Associated Chain. He manages and oversees the functions of more than 30 stores, some of them located right in his childhood home of Queens, New York City.

But grocery stores are not Espinal’s only passion. He loves music and he decided to make his own to share with audiences. In addition to his business career, he has become a recognized bachata artist among the Latin music industry. In 2010, Espinal released his debut album titled “Para Ti” (For You). The opening track called “Inténtalo” (Try It) featured reggaeton musician Magic Juan and became an instant hit on the Billboard Tropical Songs chart. One year after “Para Ti” was released, Espinal was given a nomination for Best New Artist at Premio Lo Nuestro Awards, sponsored by the prestigious Latino television network, Univision. Past nominations by Premio Lo Nuestro have included Juan Luis Guerra, Selena, Paulina Rubio, Ricky Martin, and Jenni Rivera.

Since Espinal grew up in both the Dominican Republic and in New York City, he was exposed to a wide variety of musical styles which eventually laid the foundation for making his own music. As a child, Espinal was always interested in music. He formed a merengue band called Baby Band as a teenager. The band lasted for five years and Espinal took a break from music for a few years to focus on his business career. Now, Espinal has returned to the music scene once again. His albums contain mixtures and fusions of the accordion, merengue, bachata, and traditional Dominican melodies. His latest album, titled “Mi Tiempo” (My Time), is set for release in February 2015. When Espinal isn’t in the studio making new music or running his grocery store chain, he resides in Long Island with his partner and their three children.

J’Martin will be performing on New Year’s Eve at the Galaxy Sports Restaurant in Hyattsville, Maryland. Tickets are now on sale for $25. For tickets, please visit www.tickeri.com. For more information about J’Martin’s musical releases, please visit www.jmartinmundial.com.

/ KESTA HAPPENING MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2014182014 CONCERT RECAP

During his last visit to Silver Spring, MD, Gilberto Santa Rosa dedicated his concert to “those who bought two tickets to the concert and ended up with only one.” Who hasn’t gone through that awkwardness of getting a ticket for you and that special someone and ending up going alone or giving the ticket away after things don’t work out. As our writer told us, “He gave me butterflies and goose bumps just as my first concert when I was 10 years old. I have to say that the concert was amazing.”

That’s right we turned 10 this year and we celebrated it with a huge party with Spaniards JarabeDePalo at Echostage! As part of the 2014 SOMOS tour, Jarabedepalo’s stop in Washington DC did not go unnoticed as Washingtonians gathered in full assembly for a night of new music and classics that had us all dancing, singing and swooning as soon as Mr. Jarabedepalo himself, Pau Donés stepped on stage to do what he does best. He served us a heart filled performance with melodies straight from the soul. Echostage’s huge light projections helped to blanket the stage and create a dazzling electric backdrop to Jarabe’s already vibrant show.

Mexican band El Tri brought a piece of Chilangolandia to The Palace on May 19th, celebrating 45 years of being together. El Tri’s frontman, Alex Lora came ready with jokes, double entendres, his own brand of “El Tri” tequila, and even a venetian mask as he howled, and jumped around all over the stage as if time was standing still for him. He talked to fans, he delivered jokes, he took selfies with the crowd and he threw soccer balls back and forth from the stage. The masked luchadores were present in the moshpit, shows, keys and cell phones were lost, and all was right with the world by the time the almost 3 hour set was over. Kesta chartered a party bus for those fans coming from Maryland and DC and well what happens on the party bus… stays on the party bus, but it was a fun time!

The Mexican Madonna made her debut appearance in Washington, DC on May 30th at Echostage, and the results were “De Pelicula!” Promoting her “De Pelicula” tour, Gloria Trevi came prepared to show us her inner diva was alive and well and looking better than ever. The show started off spectacularly as Trevi came on stage cloaked by dozens of fog machines and surrounded by a troupe of the sexiest dancers known to man. Trevi changed outfits nearly after every song and performed some acrobatics (like being thrown up in the air, doing the splits, and generally throwing herself around the stage) that had fans wondering if she was 22 instead of 46. It’s clear from her performance that Trevi continues to live by that mantra, she’s going to wear her hair loose and always be who she is until the day she dies.

Thousands of “Romeistas” streamed into the GMU Patriot Center Wednesday night ( June 11) to see the King of Bachata himself, Romeo Santos, who delivered a tremendous 2 hour performance

that still has my ears ringing from all the swooning and screaming fans from all walks of life who attended the show. A couple of lucky ladies also got serenaded and kissed by Santos on stage to “Solo Por un Beso” and “Propuesta Indecente.” My only regret that night? Not

seducing Romeo and running away together, but there is always the Vol. 3 World tour!

This year Kesta got all “festivaled” out on July 18th throwing a big Tropical Fest to celebrate some of the best Latin music acts in the industry for a night full of dancing at the GMU Patriot Center. The dancing featured, Orchesta Guayacan, Grupo Gale, Jorge Celedon and Grupo Niche. Orquesta Guayacan brought the house down with their hits such as “Te amo, Te extraño”. The ladies got a treat as each vocalist showed off their amazing dancing skills onstage individually, electrifying the audience. Next up was the famous Grupo Niche, a true legend, who got the audience to the peak of their excitement. With their elegant appearance and refined sound, they pleased the audience opening with their hit “Cali aji” and playing many of their enduring hits “Una Aventura”, “Sin Sentimientos”, “Gotas de Lluvia” and “Cali Pachanguero”. Last but not least was Jorge Celedon, who despite having an accordion-less set, continuously engaged his fans up onstage and later walked offstage to get closer to his fans. All in all, Kesta Tropical Fest was a night full of Colombian flavor and if you did not attend, you truly missed out on a great show!

The weather couldn’t have been better for the Prince Royce concert on Friday, August 29th at Wolf Trap. Royce began to serenade the crowd with fan favorites such as “Darte un Beso”, “Te Robaré “Soy el mismo”, and “Incondicional. Everyone swayed and danced as Royce performed his famous “Stand by me”. On the back lawn, couples everywhere were dancing, some were even dancing passionately by themselves. Some knew how to dance, and others… well, they had their own style, but they all had one thing in common, they all shared the same excitement and enthusiasm for the music.

Café Tacvba didn’t just take us back to our childhood they recreated the 90s during their “Re” 20 year Anniversary Tour at the Lincoln Theatre. Although it was a seated show people flooded the aisles, protested on stage and sang along to classic songs like Ingrata, Maria, Esa Noche, Las Flores, and el Baile y el Salon during the two hour set. Cafeta also managed to squeeze in some non-Re songs including

Eres, and Dejate Caer. Overall it was an epic way to relive one of our favorite Café Tacuba albums.

the night, at 9 pm will be the DC premiere of Quebranto, a powerful, award-winning documentary which tells the story of actress Dona Lilia Ortega and her daughter, Coral Bonelli, a cabaret performer who started her career as a male child actor, Fernando Ortega (“Pinolito”) in the 1970s Mexican film industry.

On Sunday, December 7 at 2 pm, the festival will come to a close with the screening of the classic film, Aventurera, one of the most popular Mexican films ever made which follows the rise and fall of a nightclub performer with a dark past and plans for revenge.

ost great things tend to come together by chance. It was in the early 1960s that Argentinian composer, Ariel Ramirez, was inspired by a trip to Germany after World War II, where a chance encounter with a group of nuns

prompted Ramirez to write a “spiritual piece”. This would later become known as “La Misa Criolla” and went on to sell millions of copies internationally. The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in DC will be hosting a very special presentation of the “Misa Criolla: Christmas of the Americas: Voices of Hope” on December 21, 2014 as a benefit for the Cerniquem Institute for Burned Children.

For those not familiar with the “Misa Criolla” it is a combination of Spanish text with indigenous instruments and rhythms turning the event into a traditional holiday celebration for years to come. This year’s event will include

music from all corners of the world including Andean folk music, Bolivian indigenous music, and performers from Peru and Chile.

One of the key performers will be Ernesto Bravo, Chilean performer of Andean folk music. Expert on instruments like the Charango, Guitar, Quena, Zamponas, and percussion he is sure to delight with his unique style. Known by his collaboration on “Memorias de los Andes” the documentary of a “Journey expedition Travel”, Bravo hopes to bring traditional Andean folk music to the masses.

Also performing in this edition of the Misa Criolla is tenor Pablo Henrich-Lobo from Bolivia who has become somewhat of a local celebrity having trained at the Catholic University of America, followed by 2 years of vocal training in Rome, Italy under tenor Gianni Bavaglio. Mr.

Henrich-Lobo has also performed with The Washington Opera, The Opera Camerata of Washington, Baltimore Opera Company, Teatro Lirico of DC, Manhattan Opera, and the Opera Theater of Costa Rica among others.

Known for his expressive voice of “liquid gold and the stage presence of a lion” (DC Theatre Scene), Peruvian native Jose Sacín will also be performing at this year’s Misa Criolla. Sacin is considered one of the leading South America baritones of our time. He has performed and collaborated with the leading figures of the opera and music world today including; a nationally televised performance

for Pope Benedict XVI alongside Placido Domingo at Nationals Stadium in Washington, DC; with Gregory Buchalter of the Metropolitan Opera; the Chilean soprano Veronica Villaroel; American soprano Alessandra Marc, Enrique Ricci and Will Crutchfield. He performed the world premiere of selected passages from the newly discovered version of Verdi’s, La Forza del Destino with Philip Gossett at the Caramoor International Festival. Sacín’s recording of Ariel Ramirez’s Misa Criolla and Navidad Nuestra with the Choral Arts Society of Washington DC for Naxos was awarded a WAMMY for best classical recording of 2007.

Rounding up this incredible lineup are The Alturas Duo. The duo has been recognized as one of the most engaging ensembles performing in the chamber music world today. The only group of its kind, the Duo was formed with the idea of playing South American and classical music by bringing together the unusual combination of the viola, charango and guitar, and in doing so, creating passionate music that moves at ease between the Baroque, South American folk rhythms and new

pieces written especially for the Duo.

Brought to you by the Networking for the Arts Foundation and Networking Professionals, you can join Ernesto Bravo (Chile), Pablo Henrich (Bolivia), Jose Sacin

(Peru), and Alturas Duo (Chile) joined by a 20 member choir in their presentation of la Misa Criolla on December 21, 2014 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception located at 1315 8th Street NW, Washington, DC. For tickets and information visit, www.tickeri.com!

FOOD

Internationally acclaimed, award-winning Chef, Richard Sandoval, is known for his culinary brilliance in Latin cooking and is the mastermind behind his broad range of popular DC restaurants, Masa 14, Zengo, Ambar, Toro Toro, and El Centro D.F. After much anticipation, Sandoval finally released some of his best kept culinary secrets in his new cookbook Richard Sandoval’s New Latin Flavors, which features more than 125 unique and exciting recipes. The book is inspired by dishes from his successful restaurants, streamlined for the home cook. “In New Latin Flavors”, Sandoval states, “I will show you how to entertain your guests the same way that I entertain my guests.”

With Richard Sandoval’s New Latin Flavors, Sandoval teaches us about things like new tastes, palate pleasing flavors, unique and unusual chilies, and Japanese-influenced Peruvian cuisine. Having grown up in Mexico, Sandoval also shares with readers his favorite Mexican dishes. “Together we’ll travel through the world of Latin-inspired cuisine,” says Sandoval, “from Mexico to Spain, and many places in between, this book pays homage to wherever Spanish is spoken and delicious food is cooked.” The food does not necessarily have to be fancy he confesses, but intriguing flavors will spark lively conversations as your guests experience new flavors. Sandoval also offers numerous cocktail recipes. “Food is just one element of the part,” explains Sandoval, “without the right drinks to fuel the feast, you may as well not send out the invitations…In a world where flavorless vodka is still at the top of the list of America’s favorite liquors, I am on a mission to popularize the much tastier spirits of Latin America.” Sandoval then goes on to give examples of these drinks such as Mexican tequila and mescal, Peruvian and Chilean pisco, Brazilian cachaça, Caribbean rum, as well as beer, wine, and nonalcoholic cocktails. His cookbook also includes recipes for dinner parties, weeknight suppers, weekend brunches, and leisurely lunches, all with a Latin soul. He even includes an ingredients glossary to accommodate the novice chef.

To celebrate the launch of his new cookbook, Sandoval hosted a reception at Toro Toro in Washington DC on Wednesday, November 19th, one of my personal favorite Sandoval restaurants. The evening gave guests an opportunity to sample tapas and cocktails that are showcased in his new cookbook as they enjoyed champagne, and had their cookbook signed by Chef Sandoval.

The evening showcased a variety of tapas with bold and vibrant flavors. One of my favorite dishes was the Ham Croquettes with Chinese mustard dip. These bite-sized balls of heaven are one of the most popular tapas. With a crunchy panko coating, warm creamy filling, and Asian infused flavors, it’s hard to eat just one.

The Venezuelan Egg Rolls were another crowd pleaser. Consisting of long crispy fried tequeños, stuffed with succulent shrimp, tender pork, and fresh vegetables. I found myself making my way back a few times to the large bowl of guac, made with large flavorful chunks of avocado, crisp onions, tomato, chile, and zesty lime juice. There was also a bacon guacamole, both of which were the perfect accompaniment to the long, yucca fries with roasted garlic mojo.

There were many other tasty mouthwatering tapas circulating throughout the night, as well as a delicious cocktail and wine selection. But I’m not going to reveal all of Sandoval’s secrets; you’ll have to discover them for yourself by buying a copy of his cookbook, Richard Sandoval’s New Latin Flavors (Stewart, Tabori & Chang; October 14, 2014; hardcover; U.S. $29.95), a fun and delicious gift for the holiday season. After all, “New Latin Flavors”, concludes Sandoval, “is really about having a good time. This journey began in my grandmother’s kitchen, and now I bring my cooking to yours.” For more information visit, www.richardsandoval.com.

ists. “I prepared very hard to make it, I gave it my all,” Moisés remembers. The three finalists were quizzed on their World Cup knowledge, Moisés was like a human sports almanac, and he had all the answers. His knowledge earned him the spot. For the duration of the World Cup, Moisés lived and breathed the sport; he would watch the games at local hangouts and conduct interviews with the fans. His hard work paid off and his reporting earned him a visit to the popular TV show, “Acción Deportiva”.

Moisés kept his eye on the prize and gathered experience working as a production assistant for Fox Sports, was a columnist for Fox Deportes, was a contributing writer at Latino Sports 360 magazine, and served as a radio host with Skid Row Studios. He also found time to volunteer working with adults with developmental disabilities in California, and also maintained his own blog and wrote content for a social media fitness page. Talk about busy!

When asked what his favorite part about being a Sports Anchor is, Moises shared, “I get to do, what many people wish they could do. Be on the field. As close as possible to the action.”

KH: What projects would you like to take on in the future?Moisés: I want to keep becoming a better anchor. I want to work in both, Spanish and English. I want to go to a World Cup and cover the event.

KH: What’s your favorite sport to cover?Moisés: Soccer, but I like to keep it balanced.

By: Manu Mayor

KH: Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Do you think it’s going to happen?Moisés: It may seem like it’s not, but when you really look at it, I do think it’s going to happen. It will happen after Pacquiao leaves Bob (Arum). He has one year left in his contract with his promoter, after that, I think they will make it happen before they retire.

KH: Who is your pick for the World Cup?Moisés: I always pick Argentina, but they always lose! I’ve supported them since I was 5. I remember watching Maradona on TV in the 90 World Cup, watching the games, but they lost to Germany. With Messi around, their time is now.

KH: I guess we know the answer to this question then, Messi or Ronaldo?Moisés: They are both great, not just because of the goals, but because of the consistency in their play. The bad thing for Ronaldo is playing in the same era as Messi. Same as Platini in the 80’s. He was one of the best, but Maradona was around. KH: Any advice for someone looking to get into sports broadcasting or journalism?Moisés: It’s not easy. There are 40 to 50 guys waiting for one opening. I waited for years, did the magazine work...and I told myself “you can’t quit”. I had to move across the country to make this happen. My accomplishments wouldn’t be possible without the love and support of two important women, my grandmother and my mother.

KH: How do you like living in the D.C. area?Moisés: The people are nice; they greet

me and tell me they like my segment. That makes all the preparation worthwhile. It’s a cool city...except the winter.

After years of hard work, preparation, and with a resolve not to quit, this California native is quickly making a name for himself in our community and has turned his passion into a successful career. Not an easy feat, now if only he could just get used to the cold winters...

Don’t forget to catch the latest in sports with Moisés Linares on Telenoticias Washington D.C, Monday through Friday at 6 and 11pm. LO NUEVO/ KESTA HAPPENING MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 201432

Chatting with Asdru this month, I got some very interesting insight into how this album came to life and what makes it the musical voyage it is.

The creative process for this album was definitely unique. “Abstrakto was created following the 15/20 (minute rule). If it took me more than 20 minutes to get the track down or write the music, we wouldn’t use it.” It might sound a bit extreme but Asdru explained that this rule helped him focus and really center himself. “I was able to channel and challenge myself to be creative, commit and deliver; something that was a totally new creative exercise for me.”

“Abstrakto” is a ten track concept album that flows from one song to the next like a melodic movie. Think of a classic spaghetti western movie fused with elements of Hector LaVoe and La Fania that is highlighted and kept consistent throughout the album by the star, the trumpet. An instrument that is essential to Latin music and underappreciated by so many. What Asdru brilliantly manages to do in this album is tell ten stories voiced not by his vocals, but by the melodic emotions that emit from every note he plays. “Music is the stuff of life. I’m just gonna keep playing on,” shares Asdru.

Abstract art is truly a thing of epic beauty because it’s all in the eye of the beholder and “Abstrakto” is just that; melodic beauty that shifts from listener to listener each song digging in the soul and connecting in a different but unifying way because at the end of the day, “Abstrakto” is a brilliant tribute to overcoming adversity and shining through with sacrifice, valor and determination to hold your head up high and overcome that which may hold you back. “Our goal in life should focus on defining our success not by what others think or see, but by how I (the individual) want others to see me.”

I recommend listening to the entire album from start to finish, but if you want to pick and choose, I recommend checking out “Marcando Paso”, “Venganza” and “Muerte”. You can check out more info on this project by visiting Asdru’s site, http://www.abstraktomusic.com.

In a somewhat Cinderella story, Making Movies, a Latin alternative band from Kansas City, caught the attention of Los Lobos’, Steve Berlin, as they were opening up for one of their shows. Mr. Berlin left the comfort of his tour bus to listen to the band made up of Enrique Chi (guitar and lead vocals), Diego Chi (Enrique’s brother and bassist), Brendan Culp (drums), and Juan-Carlos Chaurand (percussion/keyboard). After the show, Mr. Berlin made an offer that Making Movies couldn’t refuse, he wanted to produce their next album.

“At that point we had opened up for many artists and it’s rare that a touring band is even at the venue when the opening band is playing. What happened with Steve Berlin…that never happens,” shared Enrique during a recent phone interview with Kesta.

A soft spoken guy, Enrique is one to know when to follow up on an opportunity. “We knew Steve was busy so we got into the studio right away to record “A La Deriva”. It all happened so fast one minute we are playing our set and the next we were jamming with Los Lobos. It changed everything for the band,” remembers Enrique.

Making Movies were no novices. They had released an EP with a local record label and were organizing tours on their own, successfully opening up for Aterciopelados, Ozomatli, and Zoe to name a few.

They even did some community organizing which is what inspired “A La Deriva.” “We worked to create a non-profit in Kansas to bring music lessons to kids in communities full of new Latino, Asian, and African immigrants. There were no music events happening and we wanted to change that. This album tells their stories. Some songs are about the American dream, others about domestic violence, others about being bilingual. These topics don’t just apply to Latinos or immigrants though, they touch all of us,” shared Enrique.

Although the topics can be heavy, Making Movies also wants to make people dance. “Most old Latin music is about hardships, heartbreak, and lament but its music you can dance too. Think of Pedro Navaja. On the surface it’s an upbeat song but if you get deeper it’s very heavy. We want to make people dance at our shows but we also want to give a voice to a community that’s often unheard,” concludes Enrique. Making Movies succeeds in that, the songs are psychedelic with that inconfundible son that makes our hips sway and our hearts soar.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE LOCAL BANDS, BOTTA, RECENTLY RELEASED THE BOY AND THE SEA their fourth full-length album. We last touched base with the band nearly two years ago after the release of “Cupido,” a heart wrenching album produced by pop rock producer Jim Ebert (perfect post-breakup therapy album, seriously!). Naturally I was ecstatic to give their latest release a listen.

“Since the last album, we’ve grown musically, personally, and spiritually,” shared Botta’s frontman, Daniel Gomez. “This is a concept album that really is about keeping the kid in all of us alive and also was a personal legacy I wanted to leave for my kids. I put my heart and soul into it.” Since the album was so personal in nature, Daniel opted for producing the album himself. After listening to the album several times, this was definitely a wise choice.

The Boy and the Sea is only 10 songs, but those songs pack a punch. Tracks 1 through 3 are actually three songs in one. It’s ambitious, complex, and different from anything else Botta has ever done, but most of all its hauntingly beautiful. Botta enlisted the help of guest musicians

including Javier Godinez on Violin, and Koky Flores on lead guitar. They also played with various sound effects and incorporated electronic progressive beats that definitely add an otherworldly sound to the new album. This is a definite change from previous works like the angsty and rockish “Pedazos de Mi en El Tape” or the pop rock elements in “Cupido”.

The sea is very symbolic on the record as it is in Daniel’s own life. “I lost my

mom when I was very young and I took up surfing because it had a very calming effect on me. Recently, I took my family to Caracas, Venezuela and we visited the beach that I used to play in. It brought back a lot of ghosts from my past and really inspired many feelings for this album.”

A combination of Daniel’s childhood memories melded together as he read “The Little Prince” to this daughter Sofia recently and materialized in the album. “I had some health scares this year and so there’s a bit of me looking at my own mortality. I think it made me look at this record like it would be my last. Fortunately, I’m better and I’m really proud of how the album turned out,” shared Daniel.

“Some songs are loud and upbeat like ‘Planet and your Kings’, some are unlike anything we’ve ever done before like ‘Little Flower’, while others are bare like ‘Penumbra’ which is just me on the acoustic guitar. It’s a journey that goes deeper and deeper the more you listen to it.”

You can listen to Botta’s latest album, The Boy and the Sea on iTunes, and Spotify and can purchase it online here: www.cdbaby.com/cd/botta22. For more information visit, www.bottamusic.com

and would mix genres by playing literally everything I liked. Coming from Sacramento, it was a small scene and we would all end up with the goths, and hip-hoppers, and ravers in one place. It was super fun and forced us to mingle. That’s something I really wanted to incorporate into the parties here in NYC,” Marcelo shared.

I asked Marcelo if he felt that Latino’s raised in the US have more of a responsibility to listen to the music their parents listened to. “It’s not so much about rescuing what your parents know because they can also have awful taste in music. Like my dad has terrible taste in music (don’t worry I tell him this all the time), while my mom is a lot more cultured in her tastes. Also once you mature your tastes change too, so you could have witnessed your mom listening to Juan Gabriel and thought it was embarrassing but when you listen to him now you may think ‘wow he is soooo good!’ It’s important to keep incorporating music you develop a taste for and always appreciate good music,” he shared.

ture (the same people who were starting up the Latin Alternative Music Conference and what is now Remezcla), P3CULIAR is here to represent the various “roles” that exist in our music subculture today. He’s a reminder that we don’t have to choose between English and Spanish, rock or pop, contemporary music or our momma’s Juan Gabriel records. We can have it all.

Marcelo’s “naquez” (coolness) started when he was 13. “That’s when I bought my first turntable,” Marcelo recalls, “My uncle was DJing quinceañeras and bodas in Mexico and I remember following him around all over the place and learning to DJ. Eventually I was DJing my own high school house parties and whatever else came my way.”

Marcelo refers to his current tastes in music as somewhat obscene, “Music purists and people that were used to roaming within a specific subculture in New York were really almost insulted when I came along

Marcelo’s P3CULIAR baby was born on the dance floor during an after party with the Mexican band Kinky. “I had just started dabbling in music production and I mentioned it to Ulises Lozano (keyboardist/accordion player for Kinky). He agreed to work with me and over that next year we narrowed down to the songs now on the LP Role Play.”

In Role Play, Marcelo explores the various musical styles that make up his personality. “In ‘Hazme El Amor’ I added a middle eastern inspired cumbia feel, whereas in ‘Star’ I wanted to pay homage to Argentine cumbia villera style. On something like ‘Wicked’ I wanted a heavy industrial sound and sort of new wave so the beat is really hard and the melody is slightly evil and sinister, but then we contrasted the heavy synthesizers with a pitch shifted voice that’s almost sweet sounding.”

Although Marcelo claims to be self-conscious about his voice, there are definitely no complaints in the vocals of the

infectiously sexy single, “Menea” sung in collaboration with rapper Cakes Da Killa. The video is similarly mesmerizing. “It was full circle because we filmed it at Fontana’s where I started the first DJ parties. It was a cool experience.”

Los Amigos Invisibles’ songs are so straightforwardly funky it seems like a straight-up dance record would be the next logical step for the live show legends. So it makes perfect sense that Jose Luis Pardo — known to fans of the band as DJ Afro — branching off into a side project that allows him to explore the dance-ier elements of the group. His latest effort is called Musica Moderna — his first album under the name Orquesta Discotheque.

Anyone who has witnessed the joyous kinetic groove of a live Amigos

Invisibles show knows that the bands’ disco influenced energy is so feel-good it’s practically brotherly in nature. DJ Afro maintains that sense of connection with Musica Moderna.

Pleasantly surprising is the way Orquesta Discotheque beautifully incorporates romanticism (“Buscando Un Poco De Amor,” “Lanza Perfume”) and soul (“Obsesion”) to expand the emotive range of Los Amigos Invisibles-esque rhythms.

The addition of female voices (guest vocalists Francisca Valenzuela, Linda Briceño, Natalia Clavier, Madame Perine) to stylish, engaging nu-disco beats lends the album the feel of a classic disco era album. Moreover, the female voices form emotional counterpoints to the male guest vocalists (Federico Aubele is particularly excellent on “Obsesion”) that endow Musica Moderna with meaningful romantic power.

Lounge music has gotten so staid and boring; more about cool than life-giving feeling. Musica Moderna’s fun, ethnic —“Hay Que Venir Al Sur” is pure bossa nova-disco joy — reimagining of the electronic lounge music scene gives it life through disco, Venezuela, and soul.

Centavrvs’ third album, Sombra de Oro, continues refining the Mexican band’s striking folk/modern aesthetic.

Centavrvs’ aura is steeped in the mythology of the past — especially Mexico’s past: The group’s name is a homage to revolutionary hero Pancho Villa, who was known as “El Centauro del Norte.” Their Mexican roots are also evident in the folk rhythms (gorgeous cumbias and corridas) and lyrics of the

poetically charged soundscape explored in the band’s music.

But Centavrvs aren’t satisfied with simply mining the past — no matter how great it might sound. The band’s sonic experimentations result in a striking blend of past and present: Electronic rhythms melded to the lyrical and musical voices of the past.

The result is something uniquely modern, yet rich in mythical, historical, ancestral influences that lend Sombra de Oro a classical beauty. As modern as the production on songs like “La Noche Y Un Huracan” might feel, the themes are eternal and universal and elegant.

The band’s talent and vision affords them masterful use of the full range of musical expression. Pulling from past and present they create something superbly fresh and transcendently meaningful. That’s why they can toss a complete throwback like “La Tarde Me Dio” — so unadorned it feels ancient in the best way — right before a track like “La Valentina” (a track where forward-looking global dance production abounds).

Sombra de Oro is a poetic shout drawn from the experiences of what Mexicans/Latinos living in the modern world carry in their blood and hearts and souls.

My boyfriend’s family doesn’t approve of me. Is our relationship doomed?

-Concerned in VA

Navigating relationships with in-laws can be challenging under the best circumstances. I don’t know if they have directly said that they don’t “approve” of you, or have made passive-aggressive comments to you or your boyfriend. But don’t worry, the relationship is not necessarily doomed! It depends on a lot of factors. Do they disapprove of you because they just don’t think anyone will ever be good enough for their “perfect boy”? Or is there something specific about you, religion or age difference that they do not like? If there is something that is difficult for them to accept, maybe they need some time to process it and adapt to the change. Especially if your boyfriend lets them know that you are here to stay.

You need to be able to have honest communication with your boyfriend and discuss how you both feel about the situation. Don’t keep your emotions hidden, and don’t fly off the handle in a way that is disrespectful of his family- which puts him in a very tough position. Find a way to express to him how you feel that is kind, sensitive and respectful. If you are serious about each other then the main thing will be for your boyfriend to be willing to draw a boundary with his family and stand up for you.

It’s not an ideal situation, but if you and your boyfriend are happy and see a future together, then there’s no reason for other people’s opinions to ruin that. We can’t make anyone like us - or be our best friend - sometimes there are just personality differences that make things difficult. The only thing you can and should do is to always be polite and treat his family with respect. If you are being respectful, you deserve the same level of respect from his family. He should be able to talk to them and let them know that certain behaviors or comments are unacceptable and that he will not stand by and let them happen- and then follow that up with action.

If your bond is strong enough then nothing should be able to get between you. The important thing is for you to do your part, and for your boyfriend to stand up for you. We all need to be able to count on our partners’ unconditional love and to feel like their priority. Otherwise, the bond feels insecure and this leads to jealousy, insecurity, and hurt feelings. If he’s not able to do stand up for you now, then that’s crucial information for you to have before things get more serious.

The DMV’s finest converged once again at Galaxy Nightclub in Hyattsville, Maryland to get in their bachata fix. They were in good company with performances by El Chaval De La Bachata and Joe Veras as they combined forces on Friday, November 14.

This concert titled, “BachataFest 2014”, was sponsored by El Zol 107.9 and got kicked off by radio show host Diamond Boy Luis at around 12:45 pm. Thereafter concertgoers were overtaken by “bachatamania”. El Chaval De La Bachata was up first and belted out his popular songs including the tune “¿Dónde Están Los Amigos?” which the audience sang along to passionately. Joe Veras followed next with “Intentalo Tú” and “La Pared” which made the crowd just as happy. Both musicians swooned onlookers during their individual sets by playing the guitar themselves. While occupied by taking photos and video to record all of the awesomeness that was going on around me, I quickly got the hint that I needed to get myself off the dance floor as I was inadvertently being bumped into by eager dancers. The show was well attended and fans had to fight to find a decent parking space anywhere in the vicinity of University Boulevard as Espinoza Paz was performing live next door at Cococabana.

If you like to dance you definitely can’t miss the next BachataFest! For this and other events visit www.kestadc.com for more information!

Chilean Rock group La Ley returned to the area to give a truly amazing show at the Fillmore in Silver Spring on November 9th. Being a reunion tour, the band gave fans a real treat as they played most of the fan favorites. The group started with one of their most

famous songs, “Dia Cero,” followed by “Hombre” to start out the night with high energy.

La Ley’s frontman Beto Cuevas ignited the crowd with his passionate singing, amazing stage presence, and undeniable charisma. Mauricio Clavera’s amazing drumming was on display, as well as Pedro Frugone’s excellent guitar playing. At a poignant moment, Beto paused to recognize Mexico’s 43 students killed under mysterious circumstances, before going into the driving “Cielo Market”.

Things slowed down a bit for the romantic themes of “Fuera de Mi” and “Intenta Amar,” where Beto serenaded the audience. Things changed once again to close out the main set with “Paraiso” and “Aqui.”

One of the highlights of the night was when the band gave fans a real treat playing a recent addition to their song list, a beautiful Spanish remake of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” titled “Sin Ti”. This song gave the perfect set up for fan-favorite “Mentira”, played acoustically at first, then building up to a momentous anthem.

Fans enjoyed singing along for the most of the night. It was indeed a night to remember for both the band and the fans and we hope it is not long before the band visits us again!
