Good Luck Whyalla at the National Clean Beaches Awards!

Page 2: KESAB environmental solutions€¦ · community engagement initiatives for the 2014-2015 financial and business period. Not all will be the same and business as usual. Family, work,

“Times they are a-changin’!”(Bob Dylan 1964) - It’s not like it used to be! How many times do you hear

someone pass these remarks?

KESAB environmental solutions is no exception when focusing on planning programs, education and

community engagement initiatives for the 2014-2015 financial and business period. Not all will be the

same and business as usual.

Family, work, school, social and budget management are all important to community and very relevant

to how KESAB views the future in context of environmental education and program delivery.

Having been Executive Director of KESAB since 1988 (26 years) I have witnessed huge change and

impacts, especially in rural and regional areas and all the issues that come with remoteness, drought,

services, economic ups and downs, and community structure.

One observation by KESAB is that during the past 10-15 years environmental management has become embedded in our way of

life. That does not mean to say we have solved all the challenges and there is not more to do.

However organisations such as Landcare, KESAB, WWF, Catchment Water Management Boards, EPA, Zero Waste SA, LGA, NRM

Education, Caring for Country, NHT Grants, DEWNR and State utility services (water and power) ………..the list appears endless,

have all contributed at one level or another to how we, the community, manage and sustain diversity in the environment.

Over many years we have collectively responded to a key KESAB objective “to inspire, influence and advocate for

environmental sustainability”.

The above helps to determine how KESAB plans to meet the future in 2014 – 2015. A number of long running and overall

successful programs will be reviewed and outcomes will determine how future delivery may be re-structured. These programs

include Sustainable Cities and Communities (Tidy Towns), Clean Site, Road Watch, Litter Education and campaigns, Wipe Out

Waste and Litter Less.

New programs and services may emerge and be delivered in different ways. Some programs may not survive, having achieved

their respective purpose and recognising it is time to move on. Considerations will revolve around funding for programs,

relevance and community entry, participation levels reflecting changing government policy and environmental priorities.

South Australia is the leader in Australia in terms of litter and waste management. But to stay in front requires new engagement

techniques responding to the rapid increase across the board with community utilising social media and accessing the internet.

Information and IT, along with numerous case studies and access to experienced and skilled network Agencies and NGOs, will

also assist KESAB to determine the next stage of our journey.

Whilst many of us would wish that progress did not knock on our daily door, the fact is we must work with change, often blending

old with new to achieve outcomes which ensure that environmental sustainability remains our core focus.

In coming months KESAB will be developing a number of exciting initiatives to meet our future goals working with the community.

The Wipe Out Waste schools program, along with Litter Less and Sustainable Communities, will occupy much of our time. Judging

will soon commence for awards to be presented in October. Development of education and learning resources will take high

priority, as will strategies being planned in consultation with Keep Australia Beautiful National Association.

KESAB has applied for funding through the Federal Government Green Army initiative and Coca Cola Beverage Container

Grants are currently open for submissions. Butt Free Day is scheduled for October 21st (TBC) and NRM Education will enhance the

suite of KESAB Education and community engagement activities.

A major part of KESAB future planning and review, our Team will focus on the new direction to be taken by Zero Waste

commencing July 2015 as a result of government announcements made during and post-election. KESAB is in close consultation

with Government and ZWSA to ensure that litter and waste education and recycling remains a priority and does not impact

negatively on the successes driven by KESAB over four decades.

Whilst change may be on the horizon, KESAB’s clear goal is to ensure South Australia continues to lead the way.

Entries have closed for both the Sustainable Cities and Sustainable Communities programs. Judging is now underway!

Sustainable Cities is a desktop judged program and submissions are currently being assessed. The winner of the Sustainable Cities

Award will be announced at the KESAB AGM and Annual Breakfast on August 28. National Judging will occur soon after and the

winner will represent South Australia at the National KAB Sustainable Cities Awards, which are being hosted by the City of Marion,

last year’s winner.

We have received many terrific entries for the Sustainable Communities program this year, and the judging schedule is being

finalised as we speak! Alex will be travelling all over the state again to visit all of the entrants, and will rack up the kilometres with

trips to Marree in the North, Streaky Bay in the West and Mount Gambier in the South.

Road Watch Update

The Road Watch program has been ticking along nicely for the past

couple of months, with lots of groups getting out there and conducting

clean-ups. We thank them for their hard work and contribution to helping

SA be litter free!

Behind the scenes, KESAB have been in discussions with the Department

of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure for the renewal of funding for the

2014-15 year and, more interestingly, again with DPTI and all the other

KAB offices in Australia, in updating our safety guidelines.

We hope to be able to roll out the new Road Watch Guidelines in the

next few weeks.

Some interesting facts and figures from April - June clean -ups:

• 36 clean-ups undertaken

• 45% of the groups spent 2-5 hours undertaking clean-ups

• 25% of groups picked up over 20kg of rubbish

• Interesting items found this quarter included: bent golf club, fishing equipment - including lines, lures and bait; toilet seat;

baby stroller; portable DVD player with X rated DVD; blower vac and a $10 note.

• Most common items found:

Clean Site Heads to the Copper Coast

KESAB’s Clean Site construction industry program was recently adopted by the District Council of the Copper Coast at a seminar

held in Kadina.

A good roll up with over 30 builders and subcontractors together with 10 Council staff attended a workshop delivered by Clean

Site program coordinator Dick Olesinski, which was well received by all. With Copper Coast CEO Peter Harder taking photos of

the seminar, images were put up on council's Facebook page that night.

The presentation was used as a forerunner to full enforcement options being employed on the Copper Coast, and council used

the seminar as part of the education process with everyone involved presented with a Clean Site environmental kit. With

increased construction projects underway within Kadina, Wallaroo and Moonta, the seminar was timely with numerous examples

of mud drag out having negative impacts on local drainage and coastal areas and, in particular, on local residents’ amenity at

a major marina development on the coast. Increased detection and enforcement options are to be undertaken by the Copper

Coast Council which is seen as being essential in helping to reduce impacts on the local environment.

If councils are interested in conducting similar seminars, please contact Dick Olesinski, KESAB Clean Site program coordinator, on

0413 750681 or email: [email protected]

KESAB School Education Programs

Are you looking for fun and exciting education programs that can help enhance your students’ understandings of waste and re-

cycling processes?

KESAB offers a number of excursions and incursions which can do exactly that! These ‘hands-on’ sessions cover the importance

of waste reduction, as well as recycling and composting, all while considering the bigger sustainability picture.

The following KESAB programs are available in Term 3:

• Excursion: Wingfield Waste and Recycling Centre and Wingfield Education Centre - This includes a tour of waste and re-

source recovery sites, as well as activities in the Wingfield Education Centre.

• Incursion: Recycle Relay – form relay teams and sort a selection of materials into either the waste, recycling or organics

bins!

• Incursion: Composting or Worm Farming Workshop – find out how to build and maintain your own compost or worm farm

system!

• Hire: If you are interested in making your own hand-made recycled paper, we have papermaking kits available for hire

during Term 3!

All programs are subsidised for schools in the following council areas:

City of Port Adelaide Enfield

Graffiti Prevention Education

Wipe Out Waste (WOW) has been busier than ever!

It's halfway through the year and the WOW team has been busier than ever before. Term 1

alone saw two regional trips, 10 Professional Development sessions, two field trips, 26 site

audits and 20 Wally and the WOW Wizard performances and there was even more in Term 2.

Term 3 is already booked up!

WOW has received additional funding to support the very enthusiastic preschool and

childcare sector and their communities. We welcome back Kathy, an original WOW team

member, in this role. Kathy came in full steam ahead, conducting numerous PD sessions to

reach as many sites as possible so they could qualify to access the School and Community

grants program. Over 90 childcare and preschool sites have attended PD sessions so far this

year.

Kathy is helping sites share their successful programs to reduce packaging, collect food

scraps for composting and even consider a switch to cloth nappies, and she has learnt a lot from this creative and committed

sector. Part of her role is to run parent information sessions and encourage a whole community approach to the goal of wiping

out waste.

The Wally and the WOW Wizard show has been educating and entertaining students, staff and

families from Preschool - Year 4 on using their bin systems and how we can all Reduce, Reuse, and

Recycle. Mount Gambier sites hosted 10 shows in February with great responses from students, staff

and families, who also provided fantastic feedback - thank you! This was followed by several

metropolitan shows and a number of regional trips including Crystal Brook, Port Pirie and Port

Lincoln.

The WOW model of combining a performance with a bin audit at the host school means the whole

school gets an eye opening education on what is going in their bins, plus lots of tools and

motivation to reduce waste to landfill. A regional trip to the Yorke Peninsula is also planned for

August 5-7. If schools in this area are interested in attending the performance please contact Jo on

8234 7255 or [email protected].

KESAB has received funding from the Attorney General’s Department to deliver Graffiti Prevention

Education. KESAB, along with Warner Youth Education and SAPOL, will be delivering 15 interactive

sessions across one week in Adelaide, starting August 11th.

The Graffiti Education presentation is delivered by professional actors, trained in facilitation and

passionate about working with and changing the lives of young people. Respect, responsible

action and positive decision-making are themes which resonate with all students and provide

strategies for dealing with peer pressure, bullying and other anti-social behaviour.

KESAB recently delivered a similar program for the schools in the Town of Gawler. All key areas

measured in the post program survey showed significant improvements in the levels of

understanding and attitudes toward graffiti.

Some key findings:

• 15% strongly agreed that they knew a lot about the consequences pre program; this increased to 58% after undertaking

the workshop.

• Base levels of the legalities surrounding graffiti were quite strong pre program. However following the workshop the core

message that it is illegal to do graffiti on someone else’s property without permission was further reinforced, with nearly all

respondents (98%) now agreeing that it is illegal, up from 91% prior to the presentation.

• Clear shifts in understanding of penalties for graffiti offenders were identified following the workshop. Several of the

communication messages from the workshop (penalties, criminal record and juvenile detention) have been clearly

reinforced, with positive movements on every measure.

• Pre program 44% agreed that ‘kids their age were too young to get criminal penalties for doing graffiti without permission’;

this decreased to 23% post workshop.

• Pre program 82% agreed that ‘you can get a criminal record for doing graffiti without permission; this increased to 94%

post workshop.

• Pre program 71% agreed that ‘you can go to juvenile detention’ for doing graffiti without permission; this increased to 93%

post workshop.

If you would like further information about the program please contact Grace on [email protected] or 8234 7255.

Youth Environment Council (YEC) Leadership Camp

Where would you go if you were a school student wishing to deepen your

understanding of the environment and develop your leadership skills? To

the 2014 YEC Camp of course!

Some 45 students and their student mentors were selected from across the

state to attend the YEC Leadership Camp recently at Arbury Park Outdoor

School, Bridgewater.

Here’s what the students said of the three day camp:

“I’ve gained the tools and been able to cultivate my ideas to go back to

school and implement change. I know who to go to and I’ve learnt a

heap about our climate and about how I can reduce my eco-

footprint.” (Maddi)

“…..that you need to plan to act. The more people you have helping the

easier it is.” (Cody)

“The new skills and knowledge I have developed is now wanting to change the school and the community to benefit the

environment. Having confidence to speak up, share my thoughts and not be afraid of what people may think of me, and I hope

when I go back to school I am able to show how I have changed.” (Jordan)

“I have learnt more about the environment that it’s not just clean up the trash and it’s done. It’s more complicated, like how so

much carbon dioxide is released every year that cleaning it won’t be easy.” (Isaac)

A unique initiative was giving the eight student mentors the opportunity to assist NRM Education staff with running the camp.

Mentors attended a training camp at Monarto Zoo in April where they were given leadership and facilitation skills and got to

know NRM Education staff better.

The focus at Arbury Park was on getting out into the natural environment, undertaking activities to connect young people with

nature and developing their capacity to take action. Students loved the nocturnal frog hunt around the creek and dams, and

challenges such as ‘Mission Impossible’ and a local version of ‘The Amazing Race’.

The community ‘ripple effect’ that these student leaders will initiate in the coming months and years of their lives is one of the

camp’s main outcomes.

Waste Education in Councils

Community tours

Over the last quarter, KESAB have conducted nine community tours for five different councils. These tours have enabled over 160

residents to visit the places where their household recycling, waste and green organics bins are taken after being collected from

the kerb.

The tours have also covered the recycling of e-waste items (which are banned from landfill) and construction and demolition

materials, which residents are always fascinated to find out more about!

If you are interested in attending a tour, keep an eye out in your local paper to see if there is a tour coming up in your area, or

check out the events page on our website http://www.kesab.asn.au/events/

Community gardening workshops

Two community gardening workshops have been held in the last quarter; one at the

Prospect Community Garden and one at the Fern Avenue Community Garden.

Both workshops included presentations on composting and worm farms, delivered by

composting expert Alan Shepard. The composting session covered the environmental

benefits of composting, the different types of compost systems, what can and cannot be

composted, steps and requirements for a successful compost system, as well as

troubleshooting. The session included a demonstration of how to set up a black cone bin

compost system and compost bays.

In the worm farming session, Alan discussed what can go in a worm farm, troubleshooting,

and the types of systems available, including worm towers, styrofoam boxes and tiered

worm farms. He provided a practical demonstration using a tiered worm farm and a

styrofoam box, elaborating on the best way to place materials into the worm farm (i.e. chopped up vs large chunks). He also

touched on the importance of enabling worms to ‘escape’ into the surrounding soil on hot days, to prevent them from dying.

Also included at the Fern Avenue Community Garden was a presentation by Dr David ‘Harry’ Harrison, President of the Rare Fruit

Society. Harry’s presentation focussed on chemical-free pest control, helping residents to identify ways that they could achieve

an organic, chemical-free garden at home.

Feedback from the residents attending these events was

positive, and many were able to use the information to either

set up their own system or rectify any issues they were having

previously.

The next environmentally friendly gardening workshops will be

held at the Dernancourt Community Garden on Saturday 21st

June from 10.30am – 1.30pm. Bookings are not required.

For more information, contact Kerrie at KESAB on 8234 7255 or

email [email protected]

Some comments from residents attending the tours include:

“It is a fantastic tour with heaps of ideas to help us understand

how to recycle our materials.”

“Amazing! Now we can truly understand the work involved.”

“I’m so glad I came. It’s broadened my outlook and I was

amazed how many facilities we have.”
