I am very excited to be publishing the first community magazine for Kerrisdale. Kerrisdale Insider is your “go to” guide to learn more about local people who help make this community special. You will discover the hot spots to shop, dine, and where to spend your free time.
Inside you will find a directory, map and calendar of events – all fabulous local resources. Kerrisdaleinsider.com is updated daily to keep you informed of what is new and exciting. This magazine is free, thanks to the support of local advertisers. A special thanks to the Kerrisdale Business Association for their support in welcoming Kerrisdale Insider to the Village.
Kerrisdale has the honour of being one of Vancouver’s most desirable areas to live, work, shop, and attend school. Cover girl, Lilli Clark, happens to have done all four. She was born and raised in Kerrisdale, attended school here, and her first job was at Moore’s Bakery. She shares a few of her favourite things with us.
In this issue you will meet the charming Andy Trott, owner of Andy Trott Kerrisdale Menswear. His knowledge of menswear is winning over a whole new generation of clients, who appreciate his old-fashioned approach to service and quality.
You will learn about Andrew and Jonah Benton, owners of Benton Brothers Fine Cheese. Kerrisdale was the launching pad for their first shop, which has now spawned two other Vancouver locations. These cheese aficionados are eager to share their passion with you.
Read why Kerrisdale is a mecca for shoe shoppers. There is a shoe for every age and taste within a three block radius.
You will discover inside secrets about Kerrisdale. Learn where you can park FREE for two hours and end the agony of circling the block.
Take a tour of the Kerrisdale Lawn Bowls as they prepare for the season with an open house on April 28.
Spring is almost here, and with the imminent bursting of spring blossoms comes longer days (at last!), spring break for the schools, the Kerrisdale Business Association’s annual free skate, St. Patrick’s Day, Earth Hour, April Fool’s Day, Easter, and the Kerrisdale Antiques Fair.
I look forward to the year ahead, as we explore the Village together. As Humphrey Bogart said in the film Casablanca, this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Cover Story: Lilli Clarkby Sarah Gordon photo by Sandra Steier makeup & hair by Faye Smith
Lilli Clark and her dog Lola are the cover models on this debut issue of Kerrisdale Insider magazine. Born and raised in Kerrisdale, it seems fitting that Clark was selected to represent this tight knit community. Although Clark still lives in Vancouver she no longer lives in Kerrisdale, however, she has strong family ties to the neighbourhood. Her parents have lived in the area for 36 years. Her mother, Terri Clark, is the coordinator of the Kerrisdale Business Association. Just outside of Kerrisdale, her sister Jessica Blossom Clark, is a floral designer who owns Quince Fine Florals on Mackenzie Street.
Clark is an event producer and actor. She just finished shooting a small role on AMC's The Killing and is currently producing an upcoming theatre production of Beau Willimon's Farragut
North, the play upon which the film Ides of March was based.
Every Kerrisdale street, alley and store holds strong memories for Clark. Her entire childhood revolved around a ten block radius from the Ravine, to Point Grey Secondary to Moore's Bakery to Art’s Place restaurant. Clark’s first job was at Moore’s Bakery where she worked with her girlfriends all the way through high school. She firmly believes it is still the best bakery, hands down! She says their iced sugar cookies are delicious and the cheese croissants are one of her favourite treats.
Another of Clark’s favourite spots is the Pastry Club Dessert Cafe which serves delicious sandwiches alongside fresh greens or soup. She recommends the egg salad sandwich. Jokingly, she says that the Pastry Club Dessert Cafe sounds like the title of a novel that a 14-year-old girl might read, but promises you won’t be disappointed.
When Clark drives along W. 41st Avenue and sees Purdy’s Chocolates, Hills of Kerrisdale, Hobbs and Irashai Sushi she feels like she is home. Kerrisdale is a place where people know each other’s names. It is a place where holidays are celebrated as a community, and special events like Kerrisdale Days unite people. As Clark aptly concludes, Kerrisdale is a community she feels very fortunate to have grown up in.

Andy Trott Kerrisdale Menswearby Sarah Gordon photos by Sandra Steier
A genuine passion for his profession is the first thing that struck me when I met Andy Trott, the charming and affable owner of Andy Trott Kerrisdale Menswear. His cozy 800 square foot shop, which opened in 2009, feels like a step back in time when customer service took precedence.
Andy Trott Menswear offers an extensive collection of clothing, accessories and footwear for the discerning gentleman who enjoys quality products and tasteful style. Whether it's a custom suit, a made to order blazer, or a one of a kind pair of shoes, Andy Trott Menswear helps set their customers apart from the crowd.
Delightful vintage Vanity Fair illustrations can be found throughout the shop, portraying gentlemen in formal attire. Trott’s large wooden desk feels distinctly at home. Bursts of colour attract the eye throughout the shop. The racks and shelves are neatly displayed with everything from English outerwear, to custom leather coats, cashmere scarves, Italian tweed blazers, Merino wool sweaters, Irish knits, Italian dress shirts, Australian Akubra hats, ties, belts and socks. Many of these items you won’t find elsewhere.
Trott began his retail career in the late 1960s at Vancouver’s legendary Sheppard Shoes which opened in 1931. In the 1980s Trott became an owner alongside Peter Shepherd. After the business closed in 2001 Trott entered the world of men’s fashion. No stranger to Kerrisdale, Trott worked at two neighbourhood institutions, Finn’s and Lampman menswear.
Subsequently both business owners retired, and Trott opened Andy Trott Menswear.
Loyal clients followed him to his new business, fully aware of his excellent service and knowledge. Trott’s customers are tired of the big box experience and find his shop a breath of fresh air. He estimates that approximately half of his clients are locals, and the remainder come from across Metro Vancouver. Although they constitute a wide cross section of ages, ranging from thirty to ninety years old, Trott has noticed that his customers are getting younger, which is proof of the pudding that his approach to menswear is a success. An added bonus, Trott has a master tailor and custom suit specialist on staff to assist clients.
Trott believes that retail has come full circle. Customers are gravitating back to small, independent shops and away from chain

stores and shopping malls. Trott describes the way business was conducted not so long ago. He remembers how passionate and community driven individuals strove to deliver quality goods that were hand picked for their customers. Their goal was to cultivate personal relationships with their clients. In turn, customers valued the knowledgeable staff and appreciated personal service. These days live on at Andy Trott Menswear where Trott cares about his customers and will go the extra mile to assist them.
A feather in his cap, Trott is the only retailer in Canada to carry the exclusive line of British made shoes, Crockett & Jones, founded in 1879. There are only two other retailers in North America that carry the line. Now in its fifth generation, this family business represents the art of shoemaking at its highest level. Crafted with a committed passion to maintaining the highest of standards, from the finest raw leather to the final hand polish, each pair of shoes is handcrafted over a period of 8 - 10 weeks. Two hundred highly skilled hand operations are performed to perfection in order to complete each pair. These shoes are the pinnacle of British made footwear. Trott paid a visit to Crockett & Jones factory last summer and was thoroughly impressed by what he saw. Trott was born in England and moved to Canada when he was five years old. He and his wife live in Richmond, which is where Trott grew up. He has four adult children, two daughters and two sons, and two grandchildren. With his extensive career in retail, Trott has managed to find the balance where evenings and two days off a week (the shop is closed Sunday and Monday) are his own. Nonetheless, he puts in long days Tuesday through Saturday. He truly appreciates the people of Kerrisdale. He
thinks highly of those who have invested in the community with their independent businesses. He believes in giving back to the community and donates to local fundraising events.
When asked what the greatest reward he derives from his business is, Trott replied “it is the satisfaction of seeing someone enjoy something in my store.” Trott describes himself as a heart on his sleeve individual; what you see is what you get. Based on his thriving business, Trott’s clients seem to like what they get!

Benton Brothers Fine Cheeseby Sarah Gordon photos by Sandra Steier
Oozy, stinky, runny, salty, earthy, pungent, mild, creamy, hard, soft cheese, Benton Brothers Fine Cheese is the place to go if you are looking for out of this world artisanal cheese. Brothers Andrew and Jonah Benton are passionate about cheese and aim to educate, and not intimidate their cheese loving clients. After all, their motto is a simple one: Eat Cheese, Be Happy.
Just how did two brothers from small town Didsbury, Alberta with engineering degrees come to open an artisanal cheese shop in Kerrisdale? Andrew and Jonah Benton grew up in a house where their father loved to cook, family dinners were important, and they were exposed to good, fresh food.
After high school both Benton brothers headed east to attend university. Jonah Benton earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was promptly diverted by travel and discovered his passion for the culinary realm, in particular the world of cheese, therefore he never put his degree to use. Instead he spent almost a decade working with cheese in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver, and learnt from some of Canada’s prominent figures in the cheese industry.
Andrew Benton worked for several years as an engineer in Toronto but, like his brother, felt it wasn’t his calling and headed off to a culinary
arts program in Calgary. After graduating from cooking school, he helped established Provincial Fine Foods, one of Canada’s best artisanal cheese distributors. The two brothers had the opportunity to work together at Janice Beaton’s Fine Cheese in Calgary.
An opportunity to head west presented itself when the established Kerrisdale business Forster’s Fine Cheeses closed down. The Benton brothers founded Benton Brothers Fine Cheese and opened in December 2007. The rest, as they say, is history. A true success story, they have subsequently opened two other locations, Cambie Village in December 2010, and the Granville Island location opened last summer. They spend their time between the three shops. When they are not at the Kerrisdale location their extremely knowledgeable employees, Peter Newman and Leo Lee, are on hand to assist you.
13Kerrisdale Insider Magazine • February 17 - April 19, 2012 • www.KerrisdaleInsider.com
The Benton brothers share a passion for wine, a natural partnership with their love of cheese. Jonah Benton teaches various wine and cheese pairing classes throughout Vancouver. Andrew Benton has taken courses at the International Sommeliers Guild.
At Benton Brothers Fine Cheese you will find an ever-changing variety of some of the world’s finest cheeses. Cheeses are hand selected from small-scale producers, farmers rather than factories, and are made by people who are passionate about their art. Benton Brothers Fine Cheese is eager to share the history and the flavour profile, to teach you how to pair cheese with wine, and to offer stories about the cheeses. Best of all, you can sample cheese right off the wheel. Cut fresh to order, the cheese is treated with tender loving care.
One of their top sellers is Brie de Meaux, the real McCoy from the French region of Brie. In fact, the French government officially certifies only two types of cheese to be sold under that name: Brie de Meaux and Brie de Melun. Approximately twenty percent of Benton Brothers Fine Cheese comes from Canada, largely from British Columbia and Quebec, and the remaining eighty percent are from Europe. Jonah Benton wishes that there was more travelling involved in their business, but alas there is not, at this point anyway. They do travel to Quebec and source from local suppliers.
Here’s a little secret to share that will make you the talk of town. The next time you are throwing a party, Benton Brothers Fine Cheese offers catering services. From small gatherings, to banquets, office parties or wine tastings, they will work with you to create a memorable and tasty event. Custom made cheese trays are designed to meet your specifications, tastes and budget. They include fine cheeses labeled for easy identification, along with dried fruit, toasted organic nuts and crackers. They also offer a wide variety of pate, terrines, olives, cornichons and fruit preserves. A wide selection of elegant cheese baskets and pine crates are also available for gift giving.
Andrew and Jonah Benton appreciate the support of the Kerrisdale community. With three young businesses to manage, they have little free time, however they are actively involved in food related events including Taste BC, a fundraising event which benefits B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation, and Toast to the Coast, the Vancouver Aquarium’s annual wine-tasting and food-sampling event.
As the entrepreneurial Benton brothers are proving through their outstanding personal service and exceptional cheese selection, they are on the cutting edge…of the cheese board.

Established in 1905, Kerrisdale Village is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the City of Vancouver and its many historical twists and turns have impacted local residents down through the decades. One such story relates to the Free Kerrisdale Parkade. Located just south of West 41st Avenue and Yew Street, this subterranean parking lot offers free 2 hour parking for Kerrisdale Village visitors in a safe, clean and well-lit environment. How it came to be is an interesting story.
By the late 1970s a group of pioneering Kerrisdale Merchants (precursor to the Kerrisdale Business Association or KBA) had already purchased two undeveloped surface lots in the 2100 block south of the lane on West 41st Avenue with frontage on West 42nd Avenue. The lots were used for free parking to accommodate shoppers in Kerrisdale. An adjacent lot was home to the lovely Arts & Craft building housing the Kerrisdale Branch of the Canadian Legion.
In the early 1980s a developer, planning to consolidate properties and build a residential high rise in the area, approached the Legion and KBA. They proposed to redevelop the area on which the KBA parking and Legion building stood in exchange for free parking and accommodation in the envisioned new
high rise. All parties concurred and a tripartite agreement was signed also establishing a limited fund for the maintenance of the new parking lot. Unfortunately, after several years, the KBA realized that maintaining the lot required an onerous ongoing budget for the businesses and they decided to relinquish the parkade and its operation to the City of Vancouver (COV).
The COV then asked the Kerrisdale Business Association to continue to manage the parkade on the City’s behalf through an annual grant. The KBA now manages all services and security within their 210 stall purview with a percentage of the parking spots available for monthly rental by local Kerrisdale Village employees. The remainder of the parking is for free public parking at 2 hour stretches.
This three decade-long arrangement between the COV and the KBA has been mutually beneficial and is an excellent example of public/private partnership and a win-win model for Kerrisdale visitors.
If you have trouble finding convenient parking on the street in Kerrisdale Village, visit the free Kerrisdale Parkade just south of the lane at Yew Street south and West 41st Avenue.

The Kerrisdale Lawn Bowls Clubby Dr. John Aveline, President of Kerrisdale Lawn Bowls Club photos submitted
If you take a walk in Elm Park you’ll notice a clubhouse at the south end of the park. And just the other side, nestled in the hedges, you’ll find a bowls green which has been on that spot since 1917. The Kerrisdale Lawn Bowls Club has been your neighbour and part of the community for almost 100 years, and yet many of us don’t even realize the club is there and aren’t too sure what lawn bowls is. After all, isn’t lawn bowls a quiet pastime for white-clad seniors? Something to occupy a couple of hours while the tea is being brewed? Perhaps it was, some 50 or 60 years ago, but a lot has changed.
If you pop into the clubhouse, one of the first things you’ll notice is the trophies and plaques which line the walls. In the office is the President’s Cup, a trophy which the club won when they competed against the other 22 clubs in Metro Vancouver. There’s also a large banner with over a dozen signatures on it. It was presented to the club by the B.C. provincial team when Kerrisdale was their host club when the 2004 Canadian Championships was held in Vancouver. On the wall are the club champions boards, which record each year’s winners of the various club championships. It would be so easy to get lost in the club’s history, so we’d better get some bowls and get out on the greens. Just look through the south window. It’s a gorgeous day and the greens were just cut this morning, so they’ll be playing really well. There’s already a
few people out there, getting some practice in.
Since we’re just starting out, we’ll need to find a set of club bowls. Just about anyone at the club here is glad to help us out, but we’re in luck. The club coach is here. John has been a coach for almost 20 years and is currently a member of the Canadian National team. He recently came back from Adelaide, Australia, but I’ll let him tell you about that. Right now we need a set of bowls. There are quite a range of sizes. Last time I was here, I used a size 2 and they felt pretty comfortable. Your hand is a bit smaller than mine. Here try a size 0. How does that feel when you hold it on the palm of your hand? Not too heavy? Great! Now we’ll go out onto the greens and find a rink (a rink is a strip of the green about 15 feet wide; there are 8 on a single green).
We can take rink 4, no one is using it. You noticed the scoreboards at the end of the rinks. Those are the latest addition to the club, bought just last year. The money came from member donations and the support of local businesses. The game’s pretty straightforward. We just roll our bowls down the green and try to get closest to that white ball (the jack). You get one point for every bowl you have closer than your opponent’s closest. Ah, but the jack is at least 70 feet away from us and its only 2 ½ inches wide. And what really makes the game is that the bowls are not perfectly round. When you hold it up, you can see it is shaped a bit

like an egg. As the bowl rolls it doesn’t go in a straight line; it bends. So don’t throw at the jack, aim about three or four feet to the side of the jack. Yeah, just like that. Nice delivery! Ah, here comes John. “Any advice?”
“That’s a nice delivery. I was going to ask if you’d give me a lesson. It’s really useful to be able to get low. ‘Low and slow’, that’s what Ryan Bester says.” Ryan is the best Canadian bowler right now. At 27 he’s already won more medals internationally than any other Canadian bowler, ever. “I had the chance to bowl with Ryan at the Asia Pacific Championships in Australia. We were on the same fours team together and we won a bronze for Canada. It was an amazing experience. Lawn Bowls in Australia is like curling in Canada. They count their numbers in the hundreds of thousands and they have some of the best players in the world. The best part of being on the national team and playing overseas is that I can bring back what I learn and share it with the members of the club here.” The club has a number of newer members who are really keen to learn and improve, but there are also people who started back in the ‘80’s who just like a social game in the afternoon.
That’s one of the great things about lawn bowls – you can play at any level you want. Some play casual games here at the club; others regularly play in leagues or tournaments throughout the season; and a few have played (and won) at the provincial and national level. The one thing that everyone has in common
is their enjoyment of the game. “No matter what kind of game you’re playing, it’s always fun ” comments one member. “Even when someone is playing a championship match, you can tell they’re enjoying the game and enjoying the day.”
The Kerrisdale Lawn Bowls Club’s season runs from the end of April to the end of September. The greens are open every day to members, morning, afternoon and evening. We offer our members casual play, leagues and tournaments as well as the chance to bowl at any level from social to elite. The cost is only $175.00 for one year and there are no greens fees.

For those of you with a shoe fetish, this Kerrisdale Insider article may make you feel a little weak at the knees. My writing assignment - to go check out Kerrisdale’s shoe stores. I put on my most comfortable shoes and strolled around the Village on a lovely sunny day and discovered that Kerrisdale is a mecca for shoes.
First up, I visited Freedman Shoes, a Vancouver institution since 1931. Their impressive 81-year history has seen them evolve with the times. I was introduced to Freedman Shoes when I arrived in Vancouver (mid-1970s). As a young teenager I was set free to shop and arrived home with a pair of very high heeled platform sandals which, surprisingly, my mother did not ask me to return. I was quite literally the height of fashion. Freedman Shoes continues to offer an amazing array of brand names, and remains a destination for quality shoes and handbags. Women will find flats, heels, sandals, dress and comfort shoes, along with runners and boots. Men will find dress, casual, sneakers, sandals and boots. While some locations are closing down, many of their stores, including Kerrisdale, remain open for business. www.freedmanshoes.com 2171 W 41st Avenue604-261-2921
Nearby, the new kid on the block, Naot, opened in early November, 2011. Canadian owners Corinne and Max Lissoos chose Kerrisdale as the location for their first stand alone Naot store in Vancouver. They have seven other stand alone stores in Canada including Toronto, Montreal and Calgary.
They feel that Naot stores provide a unique shopping experience, and their goal is to provide a warm environment, much like the atmosphere of Kerrisdale Village.
You may have seen Naot shoes in select stores, but to see a shop full of their line was enough to start my heart beating slightly faster. I am a fan of comfortable shoes and Naot designs for both style and comfort. Naot originated in Israel in 1942 and has become an international success story. Their footwear features a specialized anatomical foot bed which molds to the shape of your foot, much like a footprint in the sand. Made from the finest quality raw materials, including Italian leather, Naot’s designers strive to create shoes that are
both spectacular and creative. You may very well receive the compliment that every shoe lover enjoys hearing, “where did you buy your shoes?” Naot looks forward to unveiling the vibrant 2012 spring line in mid-March. Their new website will launch in April.

Next door is Ronsons, known for comfortable and quality footwear. A few of their lines include Ecco, Clarks, Geox, Keen, Merrell, Sorel and Rockport. A special attraction is their Rack at the Back where you may find the shoe of your dreams at a sale price. Again, Kerrisdale is a trend setter in the world of shoes as the very first Ronsons store opened in the Village 24 years ago. This 100% Canadian owned company now has 14 locations throughout the Lower Mainland. Ronsons’ employees are taught how to correctly measure a foot before they ever assist a customer. Learning how to measure a foot and determine shoe size is a dying art. Staff will ensure you find a comfortable fit, and assist in determining which style and brand work best for you. They will be launching their new website soon, and I was fortunate to be given a sneak preview. Shoe lovers will be pleased with what awaits them.

Across the street from shoe row is another Kerrisdale legend, The Kerrisdale Bootery, which promises “shoes for the whole family.” No stranger to the neighbourhood, The Kerrisdale Bootery has been in business since 1949. It is a huge store filled with a variety of footwear, including Bogs rain boots, a Pacific Northwest company who know our climate. This funky boot with the easy pull on handles is so practical. They sell dress, casual and running shoes for all ages, as well as socks,
slippers, handbags, children’s umbrellas and raincoats. You will find a large selection of Stride Rite shoes for babies, toddlers and children. The Kerrisdale Bootery also carries a good selection of private school uniform shoes. My daughters have made me vow that next time we will return to the store together!

Gentlemen who are looking for the crème de la crème of shoes must visit Andy Trott Kerrisdale Menswear. The Run Inn is a great resource for athletic footwear, fitness clothing and accessories. Some of their popular lines include Assics, Nike and New Balance which cover the spectrum from running, to trail, cross trainers, aqua fit and basketball shoes. They also carry sandals and soccer shoes (both cleats and indoor). One of their unique lines is Vibram FiveFingers, a barefoot sports shoe, which looks just like a foot, complete with toes. The philosophy of barefoot running is it frees your feet to perform their best. There is evidence that training without shoes allows you to run faster and farther with fewer injuries. If this sounds like the type of shoe for you, visit the highly knowledgeable staff at The Run Inn to learn more. The Run Inn provides weekly running clinics for walkers, those new to running, and advanced runners of all levels. Drop by, they are happy to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Isola Bella Children’s Clothing & Shoes carries only one line of shoes, Pom D’Api, however it is well worth stopping in to check out this French made shoe. The delightful shop owner, Julia Molnar, has been in business for 25 years in Kerrisdale. She believes in selling products that you don’t see elsewhere, such as Pom D’Api. From crib up to teen sized shoes, Pom D’ Api’s collection offers high calibre, stylish shoes that are made to last.

Cowboys and Angels toy store/portrait and paint your own ceramics studios, has a few
hidden gems in the world of shoes. They carry Hatley rain boots which always promise playful styles for jumping in puddles. They also carry the very popular Toms shoe line. My daughters assure me “ALL of the kids at school are wearing them, MUM!” I certainly like Toms company mission: with every pair you purchase Toms will give a new pair of shoes to a child in need. That is corporate philanthropy at its finest.

For baby and toddler fashionistas, Nestings Kids offers Tip Toey Joey shoes (sizes 6 to 24 months). Sure to make you exclaim “how cute”, these Brazilian made genuine leather shoes allow baby’s feet to breathe, grow without restriction, flex naturally, and feel comfortable. They also have a handy tab at the back which makes putting them on a breeze. New styles come out with the changing seasons.

After my day of exploring all of these wonderful stores I came away with a new pair of shoes. The previous week I had spent a frustrating couple of hours in a shopping mall searching desperately for something – anything new to strap on my feet, and came away empty handed. Like Cinderella’s stepsisters trying to wedge their feet into the glass slipper, I could not find a shoe to fit. On top of that personal service was lacking. What a breath of fresh air to find every business in Kerrisdale was eager to talk to, and assist me. I plan to return to my new shoe heaven, for a few more pairs very soon, however, this time I have a feeling that I may not be going shopping alone!
