It was reported on several different websites last week that Southern CaliforniaEdison has signed 21 contracts with solarand wind companies for power to be pro-vided to them – but the interesting part isthat one of them is for another solar plantapparently being planned for Weldon.
The new plant, which is scheduled to beonline by September 2013, appears to bedifferent from the one already in the worksfor Weldon. The new one is a 20-megawattplant called the “Nicolis, LLC” project,planned by Foresight Renewables withheadquarters in San Francisco.
Requests for information from ForesightRenewables went unanswered by presstime.
The plant is the same kind (photovoltaicpanels) as a bigger one being planned forWeldon by Renewable Resources Group ofLos Angeles. The site for RRG’s proposedplant would be close to homes in Weldonand would be on both sides of Highway178 adjacent to and behind the WeldonMethodist Church.
The other contracts signed withSouthern California Edison recently werefor installations located in Lancaster,Victorville, Blythe, North Palm Springs,Lucerne Valley, Rosamond and Mojave.The contracts would provide nearly 259megawatts, enough for more than 168,000average homes.
SCE says that the contracts are a resultof their 2010 Renewables StandardContracts Request for Offers, a voluntaryrenewable procurement program for smallprojects that SCE has held for severalyears.

The 11th annual Christmas Parade ofGiving takes place in Kernville onSaturday, Dec. 11 at 4 p.m. The paradewill start at Circle Park, which has beentransformed once again into Santa’sVillage with thousands of lights andhundreds of holiday decorations.
The parade will start at 4 p.m. whena caravan of cars will tour the streets ofKernville, picking up gifts for children
at homes along the way. The parade and Santa will arrive
back at Circle Park at 5 p.m. Santa willvisit with the children from 5 to 9 p.m.Hot apple cider and cookies will beavailable for all.
Santa will also be available in CirclePark on Dec. 15, 18 and 22 from 4 to 6p.m.

We’re very thankful there wasno rain and no snow and hardlyany wind at the Lake IsabellaChristmas Parade last Saturday.The sun even came out of hidingand it warmed up!
We had 65 entries this year.Only three could not make it dueto weather and one car would notstart.
The opening song to kick off theparade was performed by AnnaDuvall from Wofford Heights.
Those honored as GrandMarshals were very overwhelmed
as they received the recognitionthey deserved. Just wish we hadmore time to honor them. Thosehonored were Smokey Bear andfriends: District Ranger RickLarson of Kern River RangerDistrict, Sequoia National Forest;Deputy Chief Heidi Dinkler of theKern County Fire Department;Fire Management Officer DaveBrinsfield of the BakersfieldBureau of Land Management; andmany firefighters.

Forest Service officialswill implement seasonalroad closures for high ele-vation areas of the KernRiver Ranger District dueto recent storm activity.Gates will be closed andlocked on several roads forpublic safety and resourceprotection.
Although most roadswill remain closed for theduration of the winter sea-son, depending on weath-er conditions and roadsurfaces, forest officialsmay reopen some of theseroads at a later date.
As a reminder, forestvisitors should be pre-
pared for winter condi-tions. Watch out for icyroad conditions in andaround the Kern RiverValley and the SequoiaNational Forest. Keepyour vehicle stocked withsimple emergency equip-ment. At a minimum,carry tire chains, warmclothes, blankets, water,snacks, candle with match-es and a flashlight. Keepinformed of weatherreports.

Bob Burkhart cooks at the pancake breakfast held for Toys for Tots during the LakeIsabella Christmas Parade last Saturday. Over 60 meals were served. The fundsraised were to purchase toys for our community. The breakfast was Nathan Eddy’sidea, and he was helped by a crew of volunteers.The Marine Corps’Toys for Tots pro-gram is being assisted by the local Salvation Army, headed by Pastor Bill Blanton.

This weekend my daughter,Esther, her daughter Sarah, anddaughter-in-law Nicole, werehere for a girlsgetaway. Theirchildren wereleft inBakersfieldunder care ofhusbands whowere overjoyedwith theprospect of han-dling three kid-dies (my great-grandchildren), all under 5 years... alone. The gals came up hereto veg out and shop in the valleyat our vast array of emporiums,but mostly to sleep late, eatMom’s cooking and visit.
Late breakfasts, pajamas,games ‘til midnight, selectedDVD movies and good foodwere all compressed into twodays. It rained, but no onecared. They just had fun withoutthe kids around. Of course, therewere several calls back and forthto answer husband questionsand to say hello or whatever tothe youngsters who missed theirmommies.
This reminded me of the earlydays when our three childrenwere very young and the manytimes we drove in and aroundCalifornia visiting, camping,going to boat races, and takingSunday drives to anywhere. Lotsof time was spent in the car,
which included fights to seewhich one of the three wasforced to sit in the middle.
We played all kinds of gamesto keep them occupied, but itwas rarely enough to defray theboredom that little kids face ondrives of any length. When theywere old enough we played thealphabet game, where we lookedfor signs with alphabet lettersstarting from A and going to Z.(First one through the alphabetwas the winner). At first we letthem win and later they wouldbeat the pants off us. We werealways asked, "Are we thereyet?" And we'd say "Soon!" Wealways had fun, but there were afew special times when someonewatched our kids for a weekendwhile we would get away to ahotel or motel in some specialhideaway. We loved the solitudeand the absence of responsibility,but deep inside was the knowl-edge that we would be homewith the kids soon and howmuch we loved and missed them.
And that was the way it waswith the recent girls getaway. Itwas fun, but what did they talkabout more than occasionally?Right – the kids! Today the galsleft, anxious to get home to theirfamilies, and to be with the kids.
Things don't change whenthere is love.

Christopher Nolan ("Memento,""The Dark Knight") has craftedone of the most original and talkedabout films of year -- if not thedecade. Leonardo DiCaprio starsas Dom Cobb, an industrial spywho can enter the dreams of hisclients' competitors and steal theirideas. A Japanese magnate namedSaito (Ken Watanabe) hires Cobbto do something different: Insteadof extracting ideas, he wants Cobbto implant anidea into thesubconscious ofa rival business-man (CillianMurphy) -- aprocess called"inception."
With the aidof his partner(JosephGordon-Levitt),an architecturestudent (EllenPage), a chemist(Dileep Rao) and a forger (TomHardy), Cobb enters a series ofdreams and dreams-within-dreams to pull off the caper. Aseries of spectacular special-effectssequences will simply take yourbreath away. "Inception" is one ofthose rare science-fiction films like"2001" -- one that is not only visu-ally compelling, but smartly writ-ten and intellectually stimulating.
"Despicable Me" (PG) -- Thebest animated film of the year is,hands-down, "Toy Story 3," butcoming in a very close second is"Despicable Me," a rollicking slap-stick comedy starring the voices ofSteve Carell, Jason Segel, RussellBrand and Julie Andrews.
Gru (Carell) is the world's great-est supervillain -- until a youngupstart named Vector (Segal)steals the Great Pyramid of Giza,dropping Gru to No. 2 on the list.To regain the top spot, Gru muststeal Vector's shrink ray so that hecan shrink the moon. To do that,
he must enlist the help of threecookie-selling orphan girls and asquad of blobby, inept minions(who steal every scene they're in).Despite the hackneyed trope of theImportance of Family, "DespicableMe," is one of the funniest films ofthe year and a treat for kids andadults.
"The Other Guys" (Unrated) --Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlbergstar in this hilarious send-up ofbuddy-cop movies. Ferrell plays aclueless police accountant with ahot wife (Eva Mendes) whosebeauty he is totally oblivious to.Wahlberg is a super-cop wannabewho is banished to desk duty afteraccidentally shooting a member ofthe New York Yankees. After the
city's famousduo of supercops (Samuel L.Jackson &Dwayne "TheRock" Johnson)die in the line ofduty, Ferrell andWahlberg usethe opportunityto take on a caseinvolving a bil-lionaire WallStreet crook(Steve Coogan).
The gags in this film come at youso fast and furious, you'll be out ofbreath from laughing. "The OtherGuys" is definitely worth a watch.

There is only a little less than amonth left for people on Medicareto make their decisions for 2011.The annual enrollment period forMedicareAdvantage andthe Part D pre-scription pro-gram will sooncome to a close.Once the balldrops in TimesSquare in NewYork (of coursetape delayed forour time zone)what you have iswhat you have for the next twelvemonths. This is called "Lock-In",and there are only very specific cir-cumstances which will allowchanges.
Many people tend to wait untilthe last minute. Just think of thelines on April 15 at the Post Officewith last minute tax filers. With theMedicare program, it really isn'tover when the envelope hits themail. The law requires the applica-tion be at the insurance company onDec. 31, not in a mailbox.Furthermore, the benefits are effec-tive Jan. 1. Obviously, you will nothave your ID cards the followingday.
The key to dealing with theMedicare program is to act sooner,rather than later. People with appli-cations processed by Dec. 7 have agood change of actually having their
2011 ID cards by January 1.I have noticed that many people
just assume that the plan they are onwill be the same in the new year,and therefore choose to do nothing.While the plan may have the samename, there is a very strong chancethat there have been changes otherthan the monthly premium. Iresearched a woman's AARPPreferred Part D (prescription plan)the other day. She takes three med-ications. None of her medicationswill be on the plan formulary in2011. She would basically be payingfor insurance with no financial ben-efit. I recommended changing to aplan thatt covered all of her medica-tion.
Each year, by law, the insurancecompanies are required to produceand distribute an "Annual Notice ofChange" and distribute it to eachcurrent policy holder. While volu-minous, this is a document wellworth the time to read. If you are ina Medicare HMO or Medicare PPOit will outline your benefits for thenext year. It also contains the plan'sformulary. This is the list of coveredmedication. Just having your druglisted doesn't necessarily mean itwill be covered.

6 oz. Semisweet chocolate bits3 Tbsp. Light corn syrup½ cup rum, brandy or bourbon2 cups vanilla wafers (finely ground)1 cup powdered sugar (sifted)1 cup nuts (any kind, chopped fine)
Melt chocolate bits over simmer-ing water or in microwave. Afterchocolate has melted, remove fromheat and blend in corn syrup andliquor. Stir in cookie crumbs, pow-dered sugar and nuts. Mix until wellblended. If too dry to roll –addmore liquor. If to moist to roll- addmore nuts or cookies. Let stand in acovered container for 15 minutes ormore. If still too dry to form intoballs – add liquor. If too moist toform into balls - add nuts or cookiecrumbs. Put powdered sugar oncookie sheet or counter so that you-can powder your hands (with pow-dered sugar, as you roll the mixtureinto ¾” balls (or into desired size).Store in a tightly sealed container.Store, covered, for at least a coupleof weeks. (You can roll cookies into
a mixture of finely chopped nutsand powdered sugar. Makes 3 – 4dozen balls (depending on the sizethat you form).

Grease foil-lined 8" square pan.Stovetop method – In double boiler,melt chips and milk. Stir til smooth.Add nuts and vanilla. Microwavemethod – Melt chips with milk on50 percent power, 3-5 mins. Stironce while cooking. Stir in nuts andvanilla. Pour into pan and chill tilset.

It was early 1939 and my fatherthe scrap dealer thought it might begood for publicity. So he bought aJapanese bat-tleship.
The old tubwound up inour scrapyardin Alexandria,La. The once-proud warshipwas more orless reassem-bled there.Parts of it weremissing, but no one knew whichones.
Meanwhile, my Uncle Willie wascustomarily sitting in his old officechair in the furniture store near thefront door. Uncle Willie was a small,rotund, half bald fellow in his 50swho loved to sit in his rocking chairon his front porch every Sundaymorning and read the Sundaycomics. He really wasn’t cut out to bean owner of anything, especially any-thing to do with war or fighting. Hewould sell folks an old table or achair with the pillow missing andwait for them to leave so he could getback to his daily newspaper or oldmagazine. And now suddenly he hada battleship on his hands!
He had a son named Marvin anda daughter named Shirley and a wifenamed Jeanette. I went over to theirlittle house on 13th Street all the timeto play with Marvin, and Uncle Williewould always give me cookies and abig hug. One Sunday morning I was
over there when my father pulled upin his new red Buick convertible. Hewas coming over to show UncleWillie his new car. We were sittingon the front porch, me and Marvin.My dad got out of the car and cameover to the bottom step and said,”Hey, William, I want to show youmy new car. Just got it yesterday.”
Uncle Willie looked up brieflyfrom his Sunday newspaper. ”I cansee it pretty good from right here,”he said. And he went back to readinghis Sunday paper.
Well, this was probably the firstred convertible Alexandria had everseen, and my father Jack wasn’tgoing to have his morning spoiled bythis wimp of a furniture store man-ager in his rocking chair.
Just then my aunt Jeanette cameout on the front porch and wanted toknow whose new car that was.
“It’s mine,” said Dad proudly. Heopened up the car door and said,”Get in, and you can drive,” and offthey went down the street. Mycousin Marvin stopped picking hisnose long enough to say, ”Hey, that’sa neat looking red buggy.”And evenUncle Willie looked up briefly againfrom his Sunday newspaper.
He quit the next day. Turned outhe had an offer of a better job with aleading department store. He wouldbe in charge of the furniture section.
And he wouldn’t have to showfolks half of a beatup used Japanesebattleship!
