Key Factors : Counties making progress
• County wide ODF initiative with County ODF Plan
• Resource leveraged from County Budget for CLTS activities (Kitui, Siaya, Isiolo, Kakamega)
• Cash support • Fuel support by county Govt facilitating supportive supervision • ODF villages as deliverable of CHVs where CHVs are paid monthly honourarium by the
County
• County Sanitation Hub supported by human resource
• Functional stakeholders forum monitoring progress using real time monitoring system (www.health.go.ke/clts)
What is ailing rural sanitation in Kenya
Lack of investment in rural sanitation
• County investment skewed towards water
• Difficult to find out how much spent on rural sanitation
• Sanitation expenditure corresponds to 0.8 percent of total county Health budget ;
• Rural sanitation still dependent upon external financing ;
PER study 2017, Kenya
Investment Case
• USD 300 ( KES 30,000) per village investment needed for achieving ODF
• USD 30,000 ( KES 3 million) per county per year needed for running a county sanitation hub ( one young professional plus travel support)
• Kenya loses 27 billion KES annually due to poor sanitation ( Thika super highway)
• It will cost almost 1.8 billion to achieve Country ODF;• 0.6 billion KES investment per year • 15 million KES per year per county
Imperative and Possible to
achieve County ODF (Rural)
in two-three years !!
Kenya may be the first country ODF in Sub Sahara Africa by 2020
