Page 1: Kenwood High School€¦ · The Kenwood Lateness Policy Checking Students Out Of School Whenever possible, we urge you to make all appointments for your son/daughter in the late afternoon,

Dear Kenwood Family:

Welcome back to an excit-

ing new school year. We

are proud of the tremen-

dous accomplishments we

shared last year and look

forward to an even more

success this year.

-Our new principal

We are happy to welcome

Dr. Kandice Taylor, our

new principal. She brings

with her a wealth of ex-

perience and has already

begun implementing new

ideas to continue to help

build on our successes and

make our students college

and career ready! Read

her letter of introduction

on the website.

-The new website

There are several new

initiatives that Baltimore

County has put in place to

help improve communica-

tion between the school

system and students’

homes. The first of these

is a new centralized web-

site system. If you haven’t

already, please visit our

new website:

www.kenwoodhs.bcps.org

!

The website has a wide

variety of resources to

help build a bridge of

communication between

the school and the home.

-Student ID

There will also be a new

attendance system in place

that will help you keep

track of your child’s atten-

dance. This new system

still uses an ID card that

students will use to “tap

in” to school as a means of

taking attendance. This is

a county wide system and

will also help to increase

the safety of our building.

One important aspect of

this new system requires

that students MUST

WEAR THEIR ID’s

WHILE IN THE

BUILDING. Students will

be provided with their ID

card as well as a lanyard at

the beginning of the school

year and must be brought

to school every day.

-Testing News

You may have heard that

there are some new tests

students will have to take

to meet graduation re-

quirements. More informa-

tion will be forthcoming.

Most importantly, seniors

will NOT have

to take any

new tests for

graduation.

They will still

need to take

the English, Algebra, and

Biology HSA’s.

We are also proud to con-

tinue to be able to provide

our underclassmen with

the opportunity to take the

PSAT this October,

which is a way to not

only gauge students’

current academic stand-

ings, but to help begin

college planning.

-Athletics

We are happy to welcome

our new Athletic Direc-

tor, Coach Tony Ruocco.

Coach Ruocco has taken

over the role of Athletic

Director and is excited to

continue to grow the dif-

ferent programs the

school offers student ath-

letes.

As you can see we have

A LOT going on! The

best way for you to get

the most

out of the

high

school

experi-

ence is to

get involved! Join a club

or play a sport– join the

boosters or the PTSA!

The bottom line is, the

best and most important

part of Kenwood is YOU!

Welcome Back To Another Great School

Year!

All absences from school will be con-

sidered unexcused until the student

presents a note to his/her homeroom

teacher, signed by a parent or guardian,

stating the

cause and date

or dates of

absence. A

student has 5

days to present

a note.

It is the stu-

dent’s respon-

sibility to

make up

missed work;

however, the

teacher is not

required to

assist with

make-up work

when the ab-

sence is unex-

cused.

For those of

you who may

be unaware, a

new MVA law

which went into effect in October, 2007,

requires learner’s permit applicants to

demonstrate acceptable school atten-

dance.

Attendance means you need to be in

school all day every day! Students are

not entitled to take days off except for

excused absences that include only:

illness of the student, death in the im-

mediate family, court summons, violent

weather, observance of religious holi-

days, school-related or school work,

state emergency or suspension. Student

attendance and promptness will be

closely monitored by our attendance

monitor, Ms. Ryan.

The Maryland State Department of

education states that attendance must be

at least 94% to be satisfactory. This

translates to no more than 9 days per

year. A key element to success is

promptness and attendance, which can

lead to increased achievement and

preparation for the world of work.

As outlined in Baltimore County policy

“chronic absenteeism for unexcused

reasons will result in failure for that

marking period. Furthermore, a student

missing 20% or more of class time

within each grading period is subject to

a failing grade for that quarter.”

Being on time to school and class is

extremely important in order to provide

quality instruction for all students. Stu-

dents arriving late to class cause a dis-

ruption to the learning environment.

A student late to school or class without

a legal excuse as outlined by the student

handbook (supported by either a note

from a parent/ guardian or a pass from

another staff member) will receive swift

consequences that may include lunch

and after school detentions as well as

possible placement in an alternate learn-

ing center where students will work

individually in a quiet environment to

being permitted to rejoin he class.

Students who have excessive lateness

issues will be face additional conse-

quences and their grades will suffer.

A part of the high school process is

preparing students for the work force in

their chosen careers. As adults, punctu-

ality is a trait of a conscientious and

responsible worker.

Our goal is not only to improve the

quality of instruction but also to prepare

our students for their chosen profes-

sions and to become productive citi-

zens.

Please help us help your children learn

by making sure they arrive to school

each and every morning ready to learn.

If your child will be late for one of the

excused reasons as outlined in the hand-

book, please make sure you give him or

her a note.

Attendance Means Showing Up Every Day Ready To Learn!

The Kenwood Lateness Policy

Checking Students Out Of School

Whenever possible, we urge you to make all

appointments for your son/daughter in the late

afternoon, evenings, or Saturdays. If an early

dismissal is necessary, please have the student bring a

note to the office by 7:40 a.m. that includes a home

and work phone number. We are required by law to

contact parents to verify every request for early

dismissal. If an emergency arises, the parent/guardian

must come into the main office to request an early

dismissal for the student. The parent/guardian must

present his/her driver’s license or appropriate ID when

signing a student out for an early dismissal. NO

STUDENT WILL BE DISMISSED FROM

SCHOOL BASED ON A PHONE CALL. The

above rules are for the protection of your child.

One Card

This year Baltimore County Public

Schools has implemented a new

identification system. All students

and staff members are required to

wear an ID card.

This ID card will be used to check

students in and out of school as

well as the bathroom, guidance, the

nurse and other parts of the build-

ing. This new system, called One

Card will take the place of Swipe.

You will be able to continue to

access many of the same things as

you were with Swipe and continue

to keep track of your child’s atten-

dance. We will provide you with

additional information once the

system is fully functional.

Page 7: Kenwood High School€¦ · The Kenwood Lateness Policy Checking Students Out Of School Whenever possible, we urge you to make all appointments for your son/daughter in the late afternoon,

3. Contains sexually suggestive mes-

sages;

4. Depicts gang affiliation;

stantial or material disruption to

school activities or the orderly and

safe operation of the school or at

school-sponsored activities;

6. Contains rude, disrespectful, or

discourteous expressions inconsistent

with civil discourse and behavior.

Students are not permitted to wear

and pajama pants or slippers.

Shorts that are too short, and shirts

that expose the stomach or

sides.

All student dress must be

compliant with these rules.

If a student is found dressed

inappropriately he or she

will be asked to change or

may be sent home for the

day.

Dress Code Policy

The following is the Baltimore

County rule on student dress for all

schools including Kenwood. Addi-

tional information may be found on

www.bcps.org.

Students will not wear attire that is

disruptive to the school environ-

ment, that promotes illegal or harm-

ful activities, or that could endanger

the health and safety of the student

or other students, which includes

but is not limited to that which:

1. Depicts messages that are lewd,

vulgar, obscene, plainly offensive,

violent, sexually explicit or that

reference items that are illegal in

Electronics Policy

Baltimore County Public Schools pro-

hibits the use of electronic devices

unless they specifically being used for

instructional purposes

Therefore, cell phones, portable game

systems, and personal MP3 players/

iPods should be turned off and stored

in a locker, book bag, automobile, or

purse between the hours of 7:40 a.m.-

2:15 p.m. (Although students may lis-

ten to personal MP3 players/ iPods dur-

ing their designated lunch period.)

The first violation of this policy will

result in confiscation of the item. Items

that are confiscated will be packaged

and stored in a secure location until a

parent/guardian can retrieve them. Sub-

sequent violations will be reviewed

according to the Baltimore County Be-

havior Handbook and may result in

suspension.

Parents should discuss the necessity of

having electronic devices at school with

their children as many of these items are

costly and, therefore, run the risk of

being lost or stolen. BCPS does not

accept responsibility for students’ per-

sonal property.

School Policies and Procedures

Physical Education Uniforms

Physical Education uniforms will go on sale on the

first day of school. The cost is $25: $15 for the

Kenwood shirt and $10 for the shorts. Payment is in

cash or by money order. Please make money orders

payable to Kenwood High School and include your

son/daughter’s name. No personal checks accepted.

Parent /Visitor Parking:

All visitors must park on the faculty side

of the building, the lot closest to Marlyn

Ave. If full, visitors will need to park on

Stemmers Run Rd or Marlyn Ave.

Please adhere to all parking signs and

barricades that are in place for the safety

of visitors as well as faculty and stu-

dents. Illegal parking at Kenwood may

result in your vehicle being ticketed

and/or towed. Parking in the rear of the

building is only for the handicapped

and/or KHS staff. All vehicles in the

rear area must have permits displayed.

For school activities, visitors should

park in the front of the building and

walk to the rear where the fields are

located.

Student Parking:

Students who drive to school must

obtain a parking permit and this permit

must be properly displayed from the

rear view mirror at all times. Students

are to park only on the posted student

lot. When you receive your permit,

there will be a set of guidelines and

rules to be followed throughout the

course of the year. Should a student

violate any of the rules and guidelines,

it may result in revocation of your right

to park on the lot and or possible traffic

citations as well. Students must obey

all traffic laws and school signs while

driving on the lot. Once again this is

for the safety of all who attend Ken-

wood .

Visiting Our Building:

All visitors entering our building must

show proper identification at the desk in

the lobby and again in the front office.

Raptor, our new security system, has us

submit identification to a national data-

base to help us continue to keep the

students safe. These procedures are in

place for the safety and security of all.

Unlawful visits to the school are strictly

prohibited. It is important to remember

that while we strive to see every visitor,

it is always a good idea to make an ap-

pointment. All other business (getting a

copy of your high school transcript,

work permit, or visiting staff without an

appointment) should be conducted after

school at 2:30. No exceptions!

gram for fulfilling these responsibilities

is outlined in our Asbestos Management

Plan.

This plan contains information on our

inspection, re-inspection, response ac-

tions, and post-response action activi-

ties, including periodic re-inspections

and surveillance activities that are

planned or are in progress.

You can review this plan at the Division

of Support Services, 9610 Pulaski Park

Drive, Baltimore, Maryland 21220, or at

the school or office with which you or

your children may be associated.

If you have any questions regarding

Baltimore County Public Schools’As-

bestos Management Program, please

contact Robert C. Merrey, Jr. at 410-

887-6301.

On October 22, 1986, the United States

Congress enacted the Asbestos Hazard

Emergency Response Act (AHERA).

Under this law, comprehensive regula-

tions were developed to address asbes-

tos problems in public and private ele-

mentary and secondary schools.

These regulations require schools to

inspect for friable and non-friable as-

bestos, develop an asbestos manage-

ment plan that addresses asbestos haz-

ards in school buildings, and implement

response actions in a timely manner.

Baltimore County Public Schools’ pro-

One of the many opportunities we offer

our students in the chance to take col-

lege level classes. Not only do these

classes help challenge students and give

them a chance to experience what a real

college class is like, they will also have

the opportunity to earn college credit

while still in high school.

These classes take place during the

regular school day and are taught by

Kenwood teachers who have received

special training in administering Ad-

vanced Placement classes. In order to

enroll in one of these classes students

will need to speak with their guidance

counselors to start the process. From

there they may also be asked to get

additional letters of recommendation

from their teachers saying that they are

a good fit for the program.

Once a student is enrolled preparation

begins immediately for taking the final

assessment that will determine if the

student will receive college credit!

These tests take place at the end of the

year and can be quite challenging. In

order to further pre-

pare students, teach-

ers and staff will offer

many opportunities

for additional study

and test preparation as

well as test taking

skills.

There is an additional

fee to take each of the

tests, but we have many ways to help

students offset the cost.

Advanced Placement Testing will occur

next May in 2015. Fundraising oppor-

tunities will begin in October in order to

pay for these tests. Email Mr. Grubka

at [email protected] for more informa-

When buying school supplies to start

the year, remember to stock up on the

Remember that this year we will be

following an “A Day B Day” schedule

where students’ classes will alternate

based on the day. It is recommended

that students use two different binders,

one for each day. This will help keep

students organized in their classes. To

help make it easy to quickly determine

which binder your child should bring to

school each day, we suggest that the

binders be different colors– one color

graduate from high school. Within a

few of the programs, students are eligi-

ble to complete an internship. This is

an excellent opportunity for students to

gain hands on experience in a career

they are interested in pursing while in

high school.

At Kenwood, internships are available

within the Culinary, Child Care and

Human Services programs. Every year

twelfth graders that are enrolled in these

programs spend approximately four to

eight hours weekly volunteering or

getting paid at hospitals, rehabilitation

centers, nursing homes, restaurants,

elementary and middle schools and

other facilities in the Essex/Middle

River area. If your child is considering

a career as a child care provider, chef,

teacher, nurse, law enforcement, fire

fighter, physical therapist or similar

professions this program might be for

them.

If your

child is

interested in

a paid work

study pro-

gram while

they are in

their 12th

grade year

at Ken-

wood, they

should en-

roll in the

Work Based Learning completer. This

program offers students the opportunity

to obtain a paid job and earn high

school credits at the same time.

Students will meet with the coordinators

of the School to Career and Technology

programs in

January of their

10th grade year

to learn about

the completers/

pathways/ avail-

able to them.

Once your child

chooses the one

they are most

interested in,

their guidance

counselor will

meet with them

to be sure they

are enrolled in the necessary courses.

If you are interested, please contact the

internship/work study coordinator, Erin

Ray by e-mailing her at

[email protected].

Student Government

Did you know that Kenwood High

School has an active student govern-

ment? This is an excellent way to get

involved in helping to make Kenwood

the type of school you can be proud of!

Student government is a place where

students can have a voice and help the

school administrators make sure that the

students' point of view is taken into

account. While we already have officers

elected for this school year, that doesn't

mean that you can't get involved and

help contribute to the different pro-

grams going on around the school. Elec-

tions will be held in the Spring and if

you plan

on run-

ning for

would be

a good

Kenwood High School Magnet Programs

The Sports Science Academy is a compre-

hensive magnet program geared toward students that

have a passion for sports/health/fitness/wellness, and

are interested in pursuing a related career. On their

journey in this program, students participate in

thought provoking class discussions, examine cur-

rent events, participate in related field trips, hear

from guest speakers, and work on service projects;

all in an effort to prepare our students for post high

school in the 21st century.

There are 138 students in our program in

grades 9-12. We are very much looking forward to

welcoming our 42 incoming 9th graders into our pro-

gram in August. These students were selected out of

more than 250 applicants. We congratulate them!

A Message from Your Counselors Good day, Students and Parents! We hope that your summer has been a relaxing and fun one! We

have been busy getting your schedules ready for the new school year. This past winter, counselors

met with students to advise them on course selections for the upcoming academic year. Courses

were selected and students were given a list of their course requests. Students had the opportunity

to make changes and adjustments until the end of the school year. Staffing and class assignments

have been finalized, so changes to students’ schedules can no longer be made. Necessary adjust-

ments will only be made for those students who have been scheduled for a class for which they

have already earned the credit. If you have a question pertaining to your 2014-2015 schedule, you

will be asked to complete a Schedule Change Request Form located in each homeroom when you

return on August 27th, 2014.

The process for obtaining minor work permits has changed. Under the new procedure a parent or

guardian must certify that the age listed on the permit is correct. The school is not involved at

all. Refer to https://www.dllr.state.md.us/childworkpermit for instructions.

SENIORS: If you are planning to attend college in fall of 2014, start your college searches over

the summer. If you are able, it is wise to visit the college campuses of those in which you are in-

terested. If you are planning to take the SAT or ACT tests this fall, please register for them now

on-line at www.collegeboard.com and/or www.actstudent.org. Remember, the admissions proc-

ess will begin in October! Be proactive and start to research the colleges you are considering

now. You can visit the colleges’ websites on your home computer or at your local Baltimore

County Library.

We would also like to remind students who have enrolled in AP courses for the new school

year, to complete their summer assignments before they return. We want to make sure that you

return ready for what lies ahead!
