GG reat news! The three-day well test came back positive! The test determined the water flow

from the wells is more than sufficient tosupport the proposed ponds. This, ofcourse, means that construction of the twoponds on the golf course is a 90% go. The10% uncertainty stems from the possibilitythat some unknown issue may make theprocess so impossible that the county willstop the Club in its efforts. As we goforward with the ponds, we are going to

redesign the practice chipping area next to13th tee; in an attempt to simulate thepractice area at the Avenel Country Club.We are going to extend some of the tees, too much to talk about in this column. There may be issues as to exactly when thecounty will permit us to begin the majorconstruction aspect of the ponds, but wehave an excellent attorney who is workingon this for us.

The paddle tennis, squash and racquetball courts are on hold until the pondproject is completed. On that note, I knowthat most of the membership knows that ifyou sponsor a new member for membershipand he or she is approved by the Board ofGovernors, you, as the member sponsor, will receive six months of suspended dues.Be mindful that those new members areimportant for the funding of these newprojects, so please keep telling your friends, family members and business associates

WWith the advent of fall, your Board of Governors is taking care of its usual

business with emphasis on fourth quarteractions and events such as the elections ofnew members to the Board and thecollection and distribution of members’gifts for the Kenwood staff at their annualChristmas party, following the processdescribed in the solicitation letters to allmembers. The Board’s House Committeewill also be managing the fundraising forHEROES.

The reason the Board has placed specialemphasis on fundraising for HEROES is

that organization’s mission of helpingsustain surviving children and spouses ofthose who gave their lives to protect us inour local communities. Its work can best besummarized by quoting directly from itsweb page: “HEROES, Inc. is dedicated toaid families of law enforcement officersand fire fighters who have died in the lineof duty in the Washington, D.C.metropolitan area.” The organization’ssupport for families of those fallen publicservants ranges from paying funeral costsof the fallen, defraying medical and otherbasic costs for the families, financingchildren’s schooling, monitoring theireducational progress and providing legaland financial guidance for the families.

Other BOG priorities for the months ofOctober, November and December includeselecting a Junior Achievement Awardrecipient and forwarding to Managementour recommendations on long term Capital

Improvement Projects and Maintenanceneeds.

Don’t miss Kenwood’s Oktoberfest onOctober 15 and Halloween festivities onOctober 30! And even though it’s onlyOctober 1, it’s not too early to make yourreservations for a special Trivia Night forCharity on Friday, December 3 – not onlywill you have great fun, but your ticket costwill be tax deductible because that amountwill go directly to HEROES to help themcontinue their charitable mission describedin the second paragraph above.

Fall, of course, marks initiation of themost intense season for bowling. If youneed info about bowling at Kenwood andcan’t find it otherwise, please contact Jim Kasab, your BOG member whorepresents that activity, or go online towww.kenwoodcc.net, and check not onlyBowling, but all the activities includingspecial upcoming events. ★

WWell, tropical heat again and now cool and breezy – give me the latter. On one recent

scorcher of a day, a casual foursome wiselydecided to finish holes 16 through 18 at thehalfway house – the wishful scores markeda notable improvement on the previousholes (virtual golf and handicaps).

News of member winners off campus –Theresa Shingler and Kaye Mopsik wonlow net, a 61, August 19 at Woodmont in aWDCGA two lady event. Kay Tyler andpartner won 3rd gross – a 74 – at the sameevent.

The results are in for the Stablefordevent, a four ladies team event, and thewinners were: the first place team, made up

of Ann Nichols, Sally Skillman, AliceDewys, and Debi Brawner – congrats! Thesecond place winning team, was made upof Kerry Murray, Mary Mayberry, RoseannRafferty and Ann Cullen – again well doneall. With this format, it is fun getting apoint for a bogey, two for a par, four for abirdy, and get this, 6 points for an eagle! Our politically active friend and follower(Hilary C) tells me that she once scored aneagle and she knew then that gettingNetanyahu and Abbas to agree to moveforward on peace negotiations would be apiece of cake!

Moving on to yesterday’s play – theBoard of Governors event – this is theformat feared by the timid – yes, you canscore a two figure number on a single hole– you score the actual number of shotstaken.

The intrepid came through the pack inall classes. Harriet Moss won class A witha net 75 and Dana Peterson, also Class A,won first gross with 98. There were

playoffs in Class B and C – Sally VonSummer played Margaret Heimbold andSally came through. The Class C playoffconsisted of Shakuntala Dhir versus CarrieLin – Shakuntala placed first and Carriecame in second. Following play, someladies lunched inside and some chose thehalfway house - some are better at takingthe torrid temps. Well done all!

I know you are all breathlessly waitingfor a progress report on the season longRod Thompson event, which you probablyhave decided is being played in outer space, where it takes many light years for news ofany results to reach us. Well, it seems thatboth branches of the ladder have beencompleted and negotiations for schedulingthe final are in progress. We hope to havenews by year end!

On a sad note, the KWGA membershipextends our sincere sympathies to NancyRudy, a longtime, very active member andsupporter, on the loss of her husband, Bob,a fellow sportsman and a gentleman. ★

Kenwood Adopts Permanent JuniorTrophy to Honor Mac Howard

TTwo tables of plaques and trophies lit up the banquet room as the Junior Golf banquet

kicked off on the evening of August 27.The event is designed to recognize theparticipation and achievements of thenearly 80 young golfers who participated injunior golf and interclub as well as thetrophy events that take place throughout thesummer. But the annual event took on abittersweet feel as two fixtures of theprogram announced their retirement fromjunior golf administration.

John Gregg started off the evening onbehalf of the 18-hole interclub team byrecognizing two players, Tim Gregg asteam MVP and John McGuinness for hischaracter, commitment and hard workimproving his game over the past year.John gave a heartfelt reminiscence of hisseven years as the father of a juniorinterclub member. After recalling his prideat seeing son Tim, then eleven, representing

Kenwood in an interclub match atCongressional for the first time, Johnannounced that this would be his final yearas coordinator of the 18-hole team. Fromthose of us whose children haveparticipated in interclub competition, Iwould like to express my gratitude to Johnfor his dedication to the program. Ipersonally would also like to thank John forhis guidance and support to me in my firstyear as coordinator of the 9-hole team.

The 9-hole interclub team presentationby Gus Bessalel followed. Gus reported onthe team’s accomplishments (see lastmonth’s newsletter) and presented the Co-MVP awards to Jordan Bessalel and SeanMcGarrity, the “Dynamic Duo”, whosecombined winning performances anchoredthe team’s .500 record for the season. Gusproceeded to encourage players interestedin interclub competition to develop theirgames by participating in the weekly fallteam practices which run from September 8through November 10 for players 10 and up(see last paragraph).

After presenting the awards from theseason’s competitions to the junior clubchampions, Head Golf Pro Rod Thompsonannounced the retirement of Mac Howardas coordinator of the junior golf program.

To honor Mac, he unveiled the MacHoward Award, a new, permanent plaquefor future junior club champions.

For the past twenty years, Mac hasfaithfully represented Kenwood’s juniorgolfers, imposed order on the chaos ofjunior golf events, checking in kids, collecting scorecards, taking photos, planning the banquet, getting the trophiesand certificates, and cajoling parents intovolunteering. Mac’s contributions, bothseen and unseen have been countless. Fewindividuals in the history of Kenwood havedisplayed such devotion, and junior golfwill not be the same without the watchfuleye of Capt. Howard, making sure thateverything is ship shape. Mac, thank youfor your service.

Fall Interclub Practices Commence:Wednesday after-school practices areunderway for players interested in tryingout for the interclub team next summer. It’snot too late to join, so if your child isinterested, contact Gus Bessalel([email protected]) to find out how toget involved. Players must be at least 10years old and meet minimum skillrequirements. ★

MM any Niners were traveling during the summer months, but we managed to field a

team for the MVTMA “A” match atWashington Golf and CC in August. SherylFishman and Donna Stern proved to be awinning combination and helped end TeamBethwood’s season on a positive note. Wealso sent three Niners to an invitational atInternational CC where Mary Jane Tobin, participating in her first interclub event, enjoyed playing on the team that placedfirst.

A fun “string tournament” was held onThursday, September 2. Each player wasgiven one foot of string for each handicapstroke that she had earned. The string couldbe used to move the ball to a better lie orsink a putt, cutting strokes off the finalscore. Paula Christie won lowest gross, andtied for lowest net with Theresa McVearryand Paula Ott. Andrea Casson had thesecond lowest net score.

Paula Christieis also August’sPlayer of theMonth for havingreached the mostgreens in par orless. October willbe “super bonus”month, with pointsawarded for allthree categories –

fairways hit, greens reached (in par) andholing out in two putts or less, givingeveryone a chance to rack up more pointsand earn a pin before the end of the season.

We will be ending the season with afull schedule in October. Please mark yourcalendars for the following events: Ourrescheduled “home to home” dates areThursday, October 7, Manor CC @Kenwood and Thursday, October 21,Kenwood @ Lakewood CC. On October 14we will be splitting into teams to competein the Niners Solheim Cup, which will be a“three way” tournament format (3 holeshamble, 3 holes scramble and 3 holesmatch play). The grand finale will be thePumpkin Open on October 28, a scrambletournament, followed by lunch and abusiness meeting.

Play more golf, have fun with yourfriends, and enjoy the sunshine and freshair! ★

Kenwood Interclub Team Tennis This first item came too late for the

September column and of course it’s nowsomewhat dated, but let’s get it in therecords. Kenwood’s only teams in interclubplay during the summer months werecompeting in the Potomac Women’sEvening League (POTWEL). We had two4.0 teams. Kenwood I, captained by AnnPelham finished 7th overall and KenwoodII, captained by Nellie Liang, with a bigend of season victory (3-0) over Bethesda, finished 5th overall. We had one 3.5 team, captained by Kitsy Duff and it finished 4thin that division.

For Fall Interclub Team tennis, primarily several Ladies teams, two men’sseniors teams and, I believe, a men’s Ateam started play around the second weekin September. No scores were available atpress time but will likely be reported inNovember.

Outdoor Season Winding Down There were several outdoor

tournaments scheduled for September, butno results had been reported in time to meetthe deadline for this column to go to theprinters. However, if you read this columnpromptly at publication, as all loyal tennisplayers should, you might still be able to doa late sign up for the famous KenwoodDavis Cup tournament which was rainedout on its usually played July 4th weekendand is now scheduled for Saturday October2.

Indoor Season Begins October 10 As the days grow shorter and cooler

we’ll begin looking forward to indoortennis. In addition to court times formembers’ rental, either for spot time or forthe season, the pros will be giving lessonsand clinics throughout the indoor season. The indoor season runs through April 16,2011.

The reference to cooler weather makessome of us think of tighter muscles, tendons, etc.

That in turn sometime bringsmemories of pulls, strains or other injuries.

By Cecil V. Hornbaker

As most of you are aware the mostcommon causes of tennis down time are:Tennis Elbow, Tennis Shoulder and TennisAnkle. Injuries of each type can bereduced, if not avoided, by regular, routinestretching. Most of the Kenwood Pros canshow you the best remedies: the TennisElbow Stretch, Cross-Shoulder Stretch andthe Ankle Extension. And/or you probablycould get a session with one of theTherapists in the Fitness Center who canhelp the immediate problem and teach youthe stretches. As a last resort go tohttp://tennismindcamp.com/blog/3-stretching-strategies.

Special News about a Kenwood Member On August 24 the United States Tennis

Association (USTA) announced thatKenwood member, Carol Wood was namedto a prestigious U.S. Tennis Team. Carolhas been selected to be a member of theU.S.A. Althea Gibson Cup Team forwomen 70 and older. She will represent theUnited States at the 30th InternationalTennis Federation (ITF) Super SeniorsWorld Championships on red Clay courts inAntalya, Turkey October 10-17, 2010.Congratulations Carol!

Chris’s Tennis Tip Something to think about before

starting your match : When the racquet isspun to decide which side gets first choiceas to serving or receiving you actually havefour choices. You can choose to serve orreturn, choose the side of the court youwant or you can give the choice to youropponents. You only get one option but ifyou give the choice to the opponents andthey choose to serve or return you get tochoose the side of the court you want. These decisions may vary depending onhow warmed up you are, where the sun isor whether you or your partner are left orright- handed. So you thought it wassimple. Next time remember you have moreoptions than you think.

GG reetings from the Fitness Center! Allow me to introduce myself; my name is Laila Linden and I

am the new Fitness Director. I want to sayhow wonderful my first week at KCC was. This is the first job I have had where myfirst important task was to go to a “party”….the Fitness Center Open House! ☺ It wassuch a pleasure meeting all the membersand staff in attendance. I so appreciated thewarm and friendly welcome that wasextended to me. For those of you whocouldn’t make it to the event, I lookforward to meeting you and helping youachieve your fitness goals.

A little about myself…. I am locallygrown, raised in Bethesda, along with my 5brothers. Both my parents were bigoutdoorsmen so we grew up camping, hiking, canoeing and exploring thewilderness. And being the only girl, youcan imagine I was a bit of a tomboy…Ienjoyed climbing trees and playing sports. Iattended Walt Whitman High School, headed west to Ohio for college at DenisonUniversity and back to DC for graduateschool at GWU. I have enjoyed a variedcareer but most of my focus and experiencehas been in marketing and management. My last position was General Manager at alocal gym, Fitness First Health Clubs. Eventhough I do not teach classes (I have gottenthat question a lot!) I am very passionateabout fitness and keeping active. I love toparticipate in group exercise classes, triathlons, trail running, road biking andhave learned to like strength training (veryimportant as we all get older). My approachto fitness is the same way I approach mylife and diet…the more variety andexperience the better!!

The last time I saw the “KenwoodFitness Center” was as a guest way backwhen it was located in the basement. To saythe least I was very impressed when I drove

into the club and saw this amazing newfacility! And after talking with theKenwood management… I knew this wouldbe an exciting opportunity and a great teamto work with!

Sadly, this jewel of a facility is beingunderutilized. I would like to see themembership view the Fitness Center moreas a resource center! Not just a gym or alobby you walk thru to get to the tenniscourts. A place where you can get adviceon exercise plans, try a yoga or Zumbaclass (what’s Zumba you ask?..come on inand we will show you!), work with a trainerto improve your golf or tennis game, reducestress by getting a massage at the Spa,attend a seminar on nutrition, have yourkids develop their creative-side in KidFit,take a dip in the indoor pool…better yet tryour new “Move and Grove” class in thepool, buy a tennis outfit…to list just a fewof the many things available! I am excitedabout expanding the Group Exercise &Aquatics program and providing newclasses (Tai Chi perhaps?) and programs forALL ages and abilities. Studies show thatpeople will see improvement in their fitnessat any age so I don’t want to hear theexcuse I am too old to start something new!☺ Take my Dad as an example, who turned81 this summer and just bought a kayak!

I have an “open door” policy, so pleasedo not hesitate to come by and say hello, ask questions, provide feedback (bothpositive & constructive), discuss ideas, make requests, etc. And if you have notbeen to this beautiful facility yet, I inviteyou to come by, grab a delicious cup ofGlen’s coffee and I will give you a personaltour and discuss all the wonderful servicesthat we offer!

For further information on upcomingclasses and new programs please visit the Kenwood G&C website atwww.kenwood.cc.net. ★

FITNESS IS AGELESSMrs. FlorenceWalleigh picturedhere with PersonalTrainer FrenchieLongino. A longtimeKenwood Member, avid Bowler. Shewas diagnosed

Neuropathy, nerve damage in her lower leg and startedher work outs in the Aquatics Joint “N” Motion classes. She now works out in the Fitness Center on the recum-bent bike and a program tailor made for her needs byFrenchie. She hopes to be back bowling this year.

Mrs. Ann Ittner;next birthday willbe turning 82! Shehas been workingout here since theday the FitnessCenter opened. Before the FCopened she hadnot strength

trained in a long time, so she trained with Don Harris;Personal Trainer, and he showed her the proper way andform on how to use the strength equipment. Hedesigned a program to fit her needs and lifestyle. Shestarted out only lifting about 10 lbs of weight on themachines but now has increased the weight to 35 lbsand even up to 70 lbs on some of the equipment andnow also incorporated the elliptical machine into herroutine. She plays singles tennis and golf at Kenwood. She has been skiing since she was 10 years old. Lastyear she visited her daughter out in Jackson Hole andskied for 4 hours straight without stopping! She wouldnot have been able to do that without her regular exer-cise. “Working out is great for stress!”

She works out all thru the winter and summer. “If I can’tcome and miss exercising for a few days I have with-drawal symptoms!”

Mr. Walter Kennevan a youngster at 98 yrs trainsregularly with Trainer Frenchie Longino. With strengthbuilding exercises Mr. Kennevan now walks unaided; butalways by his side his lovely wife Jo Kennevan. Mr.Kennevan has just had surgery on his hand for CarpolTunnel Syndrome and works with Frenchie to strengthenthose muscles. He works out on the recumbent bike, exercise ball and bar work all under the watchful eye ofour professional trainer Frenchie.

II f you do not sow in spring, you will not reap in autumn”. This old proverb reminds us

that we must keep ourselves attuned andbalanced each season in order to reap thereward of good health. For each of us, wefind balance in different ways, ineverything from exercise, meditation, sleep, time with family, and diet to name a few.As we are all getting into the rhythm of thefall, I would like to share a bit of easternwisdom on our health through the seasonsand the fall in particular. Although ourmodern existence has minimized the directimpact of the weather and seasons on ourbody, we are still very much influenced bythem, and the fall offers a particularchallenge to our lungs and large intestine. The lungs control qi and breathing and onan emotional level they take in newconcepts and ideas, absorbing what we canuse and releasing what we no longer need, such as sadness, grief and old ideas. Thelung extracts “clean energy” from the airwe breathe and combines it with “foodenergy” to form “nutritional or ying qi” thatfuels our bodies. The large intestinereceives food and water from the smallintestine and it excretes it out of the body. When our energy is out of balance in theseareas we can exhibit some of the followingphysical symptoms such as asthma, bronchitis, chest tightness, cough, sneezing,

nasal congestion, runny nose, sinusinfections, hay fever, allergies, frequentcolds, constipation, dry skin, psoriasis oreczema, fatigue and/or low energy, sweating problems, stiff neck or upperback, and emotional symptoms like grief, apathy, inability to let go, sadness, boredom, and timidity. What can we doabout it? One of the most effective routes isthrough our skin. Touch, whetherstimulating acupoints, exfoliating the skin,or providing massage, has a powerful effecton our energy, acting to invigorate or relaxus, and is one of the oldest knowntraditions of healing throughout the world.

At Kenwood we have a broadspectrum of treatment tools available. Ouresthetician works with our members tobring their skin back to optimal health andshares information as well as products tohelp maintain it. Our acupuncturist isavailable to assess your particular energeticimbalances and utilizes tools such ascupping, guasha, tuina, and “tiny” needlesto help bring the body back in balance. Ourmassage therapists also seek to addresspostural imbalances, muscle aches andpains, flexibility challenges or injuriessustained at work or play, while alwaysbringing the body to a more relaxed state.

As helpful as our talents may be, wecan’t do it for you, it is important that you

FROM THE SPA

take an active role. Schedule that sessionwith the esthetician, acupuncturist, massagetherapist or personal trainer. Get yourselfinto a group exercise class, or meet a friendand go for a walk. Plan your meals so youcan take advantage of the rich dense foodsof the autumn harvest. Eating foods that arein season help to support and fuel the body, providing additional heat to protect us fromthe cool, damp climate of fall. And finallyremember what your grandma told you“Cover up”. One theory as to how peoplecatch colds or the flu is by an “invasion ofthe wind”. According to Chinese medicalphilosophy, wind penetrates the back of theneck, bringing with it external pathogenswhich can lead to illness. Wearing a scarfand jacket, especially after sweating or if itis windy is important even if you think youdon’t need it. Remember “an ounce ofprevention is worth a pound of cure”.

Sometimes we grow so accustomed toour surroundings we forget they are there. Ifeel the spa is the crowning jewel of thefitness center and although you might passright by it on your way to something else, make it a point to see for yourself whattreasures lie within. As members of theKenwood’s Spa Team, it is our pleasure toshare our many talents with you. We hopeto see you soon! ★
