Kentucky Horse ParkHistory

Forty years ago, a unique horse farm and educational theme park officially opened to the public. Owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the 1,224 acre Kentucky Horse Park was dedicated to our relationship with the horse.

Early on, the Park’s mission was to educate the public about the importance of the Thoroughbred to Kentucky’s economy. As the horse show world grew, so did the Park’s footprint, focus, landscape, mission and economic impact.*

In 1978, the Park’s inaugural year, competitors journeyed to the KHP for the World Three-Day Event Championships (now called the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event).

Soon after opening, The Park became home to another unique destination: The International Museum of the Horse, a Smithsonian affiliate.

Later, more barns, rings and arenas were constructed, including Rolex Stadium and the Alltech Arena, major venues for the 2010 World Equestrian Games. The KHP now hosts more than 200 high profile horse shows and special events each year attracting visitors, competitors and horses from across the country and around the world.

In addition to hosting a varity of world-class events, the Kentucky Horse Park also presents equine entertainment: live shows that inform, educate and engage hundreds of thousands of guests annually. In 2017 alone, the KHP welcomed visitors from all 50 states and 23 countries.

The Kentucky Horse Park has grown to become a crown jewel of the Commonwealth. Join us as we celebrate this important anniversary.

* A 2016 study by Certec found that The Kentucky Horse Park has more than

a $130 million annual economic impact on the state.
