SUMMER 2016

Since its inception in 2000, the Kentucky Horse Park Volunteer Program has served

as an invaluable resource to the park. Day-to-day operation of the park is only made possible through the thousands of hours KHP volunteers donate on an annual basis. From helping with horse care, to offering curatorial assistance in the museum, to shepherding students on school visits, KHP volunteers are essential to the life and vibrancy of the park.

The success of the KHP Volunteer Program throughout its existence is due in large part to the leadership of its managers. Gina Beare, the program’s first manager, won the hearts and loyalty of a large volunteer base through her early leadership and passion for the park. Gina’s retirement in 2012 left some big shoes to fill, and Candace Rose was willing to rise to the challenge as her successor.

Candace brought many new ideas and implemented new volunteer initiatives to the program. Over the last four years, Candace has supervised the construction of the Volunteer Center, the creation of the popular Run/ Walk Club and the growth of the internship program.

At the end of June, Candace moved back to her home state of Idaho, but she reflects fondly of her time at the park. “I have received such an amazing amount of education about horses and met so many dedicated and selfless volunteers, interns, and staff who are excited to learn and are committed

to the park’s mission. I enjoyed every moment of my four years here-from start to finish!” she shares.

Candace’s input was felt not only by the volunteer program in general, but also by the individuals who served in the program. “Candace has brought a lot of innovation to the volunteer program. Her patience and passion for the program will be missed!” says longtime volunteer, Michael McBrayer. The KHP Foundation joins the park volunteers

and staff in wishing Candace and her husband, Justin, the best. We hope they will be able to visit the park often!

The work of the Volunteer Program will continue as the KHP Foundation welcomes its newest Volunteer & Outreach Manager, Annie Hickey. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Annie attended the University of Kentucky, graduating with a B.S. in

Equine Science & Management & competing on the University of Kentucky’s Polo Team.

A certified therapeutic riding instructor, Annie has taught lessons at Central Kentucky Riding for Hope and also served as the 2016 High Hope Steeplechase Event Coordinator. In her spare time, Annie enjoys hunting with the Woodford Hounds and spending time outdoors with her Border Collie mix and Labrador.

Annie’s eclectic equine experience and enthusiasm for the park will complement the volunteer program.

She shares, “I am excited to continue growing the program and enhancing the volunteer experience. The park is a very special place for so many and I am thankful to become a part of the park family.”

HIGH HOPEThe Kentucky Horse Park was proud to host the 48th running of the High Hope Steeplechase on May 22, 2016. This popular day of racing featured the David T. Greathouse Memorial Race, the James B. Holloway Hurdle, the Kentucky Horse Park Hurdle, the Jay Trump Timber Race, the Bluegrass Farm Pony Challenge and the inaugural Mrs. Theodora A. Randolph Memorial Ladies Side Saddle flat and over fences races.

High Hope Steeplechase was honored to host some of steeplechasing’s finest horses, trainers and jockeys, along with international sidesaddle rider, Susan Oakes, traveling from Ireland. “As president, I was so excited to see a lot of new faces, and of course many old friends, at this year’s event. We were pleased with the races, the crowd was

wonderful, and we are looking forward to another successful year next year,” stated Michelle Primm, President of High Hope Steeplechase.

The day wasn’t limited to thrilling horse racing. Spectators also enjoyed dog racing provided by the Bluegrass Working Terrier Association, stick horse racing, vendor shopping, and the popular Parade of Hounds by the Long Run Hounds. The day

concluded with an after party featuring the band, Tom Cool and the Cooligans.

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is proud to be a charitable beneficiary of High Hope Steeplechase.

We invite you to save the date for next year’s High Hope Steeplechase: May 21, 2017. ◆

Are You Ready for the Battle? The fourth annual Battle in the Saddle Celebrity Team Penning event, presented by Merial, will take place on Friday, September 30th in the Kentucky Horse Park Covered Arena. This family- friendly event pairs two amateur riders with a celebrity guest rider on each team. Teams will compete against each other to determine who has the skills and bravery needed to pen a group of cattle in the quickest time. And all of this fun is in the name of charity – to raise funds for the Kentucky Horse Park!

Prizes will be awarded to the overall top three teams. Additionally, as part of the “Horse Farm Challenge”, the top three teams sponsored by a local farm will also be recognized.

New this year, since we have moved the evening to a Friday night, we plan to celebrate the weekend with the “Dancing in the Dirt” after party, featuring the Bobby Perry Band. The after party is included with admission.

General admission tickets will be available at the door for $10 per adult (children under 12 are complimentary with

a paid adult ticket). VIP dinner tickets, which include a catered dinner and VIP seating, are available in advance by calling 859-255-5727.

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is currently seeking

partners to sponsor the 2016 Battle in the Saddle. Sponsors will enjoy the opportunity to network with our guests and celebrities and invite their own clients and colleagues to share

in the thrill of this unique competition - all in a relaxed and fun-filled environment. Please contact the Foundation office at 859-255-5727 or email [email protected] for more information. ◆

Theater before renovations. New look coming soon!

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation and the Kentucky Horse Park are delighted to

announce a growing partnership with Post Time Studios, a full-service, nationally recognized HD media production company located in Lexington.

Through a generous sponsorship, Post Time Studios has partnered with the Kentucky Horse Park to renovate its two theaters located in the Visitor Information Center. These theaters are original to the building and have had little alteration throughout their lifespans, yet they are an essential part of the total visitor experience.

All guests begin their Kentucky Horse Park experience at the Visitor Information Center. Here they can plan their visit, purchase tickets, browse through the Gift Shop, and become familiar with the KHP’s many offerings and special events. They are also immediately directed to one of the theaters to view KHP’s outstanding film, Rein of Nobility, written and produced by Post Time in 2010.

In recent years, the theater dedicated to Rein of Nobility, as well as the accompanying theater which features a stage, have become increasingly worn and out-of-date. The multi-

year partnership with Post Time Studios will allow for the renovation of these spaces, including audio-visual upgrades, technical capability improvements, and cosmetic renovation. The Kentucky Horse Park eagerly awaits welcoming its guests to the Post Time Studios Theaters.

“Post Time is delighted to serve as the title sponsor of this Kentucky Horse Park renovation. The Kentucky Horse Park’s outstanding reputation,

both in the Bluegrass and throughout the equine world, makes it a very attractive partner, and we are thrilled to play an important role,” shared Misdee Wrigley Miller, equine enthusiast, competitor, and Co-Owner of Post Time Studios.

The first phase of the project, the installation of new audio visual equipment, is now complete, and visitor feedback has been very positive. Future renovation includes repainting the walls and ceilings, upgrading the lighting

and sound systems, replacing carpeting and seating, and installing digital sign boards. These efforts will occur in phases over the next several years.

The Kentucky Horse Park is confident that renovation to these spaces will result in increased rental revenue and programmatic improvements. Advancements in technological capabilities will be attractive for business meetings and film screenings. Cosmetic

improvements will make the spaces more attractive to potential renters.

The park is delighted – and grateful - to call upon the tremendous reputation and expertise of Post Time Studios as it seeks to offer a state-of-the-art audio-visual experience that celebrates and honors the horse.

Volunteer Spotlight

Barbara Sims loves horses. And she likes a challenge. Since her youth, Barbara has been competitive and enjoyed setting goals for herself. Currently she has two Combined Driving ponies in training, with goals for them to both compete in the FEI World Championships. In 2014 Barbara relocated to Lexington to continue her training as a world class driver, and she recently became a KHP volunteer.

Growing up in Dallas, Barbara competed as a youth and was ranked as a top ten rider by the American Quarter Horse Association. In her forties, Barbara decided she wanted to learn how to jump, and then soon after unexpectedly became an owner

of a miniature horse. She ended up learning to drive him, showing him in miniature horse shows. This experience ultimately drove Barbara’s passion for competitive driving.

In 2003, Barbara purchased a Welsh Cob named Flyer as a three year old but didn’t realize at first what she had. “I knew he was a world class mover. I just didn’t know he had a world class brain to go with it,” she shares. During their preliminary time with each other, Barbara was diagnosed with two benign brain tumors. She had a long journey recovering from surgery, having to regain motor and speech skills. She spent a lot of her recovery on her laptop. “I was searching for lanterns for my carriage, when a friend remarked I was crazy. I

had just started driving competitively before my surgery and the lanterns are required for advanced competitors only. I knew I had a special horse and was looking forward to getting back into our training,” she reflects.

Barbara competed Flyer at the advanced level for six years, and he was named 4th place USEF Horse of the Year in 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015. Next summer Flyer will be competing as part of a pair under Katie Whaley’s guidance at the FEI World Championships in Germany. Barbara also hopes to compete her other pony, a Dutch Harness Horse mare, Erresitable, aka “Ronnie,” at the FEI World Championships in three years.

This summer, Barbara and Katie will be performing a driving demo for the Kentucky Horse Park Volunteer Program. Barbara wanted to give back to the program and the park by educating others about the sport of Combined Driving, as she has spent many years competing at the park at the Kentucky Classic CDE and looks forward to competing at it again in October.

Barbara also supports the park as a donor through the Man o’ War Society. Barbara shares “Being a fan of horses, you want to see the park succeed. When you come here from out of state and you turn into the park grounds-whether it’s your first visit or one of many-it is so inspiring. You’ve landed in horse mecca.” ◆

HORSEWARE IRELANDHorseware Ireland became part of the Kentucky Horse Park family this spring when they donated

custom items to some of our more famous park residents – the horses of the KHP Mounted Police team and the Hall of Champions. Our Mounted Police horses look smart in their custom Rambo Optimo turnouts and liners, and our Hall of Champions residents are enjoying showing

off their new coolers. Thank you to Horseware Ireland for their generous support! ◆

Dr. Andy Clark and Ms. Kathleen Sullivan

Kathleen Sullivan and her husband Andy Clark both grew up in California, and horses

have always been an important part of their lives. Kathleen has competed and shown horses since childhood, mostly in show jumping and eventing. Andy grew up on a cattle ranch and was riding before he could walk.

While they moved to this area only ten years ago, the Kentucky Horse Park has been a part of their lives for much longer. Kathleen first visited the park in 1978 for the first World Three-Day Championship. The very next year, she competed at the park in the International Three-Day Championship that has now become the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. Kathleen went on to compete at the park throughout the 1980s.

Andy and Kathleen married 21 years ago and spent the first decade of their marriage in California where Andy was a veterinarian and Kathleen, a financial advisor. Andy left the equine practice after 20 years due to an injury and enrolled in business school, receiving his MBA in 2000. When Andy was offered the CEO position at Hagyard Equine Hospital in

2005, Andy and Kathleen decided to make the cross-country move, largely because of their great affection for the Kentucky Horse Park. Kathleen continues her work as a financial advisor for Morgan Stanley and commutes to California once a month to meet with her primarily West Coast clients. Andy left Hagyard in 2011 and now owns an equine business management consulting company which serves equine hospitals across the country.

Andy and Kathleen own a horse farm near the park, and they are syndicate owners of a four star eventing horse, Sound Prospect. Andy serves on the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation Board of Directors. Kathleen still shows and competes, and they mutually enjoy fox hunting and attending show jumping and eventing competitions at the park. They especially enjoy the shady, comfortable view of Rolex Stadium from the Tack Room Grill. Kathleen

recalls an afternoon where she watched Eddie Macken, George Morris, and Eric Navet simultaneously walking the course with their protégés before a Grand Prix, and thinking “Three of the greatest riders on the face of the Earth are walking in this arena right now.”

Andy and Kathleen became members of the Champions’ Circle Society when they notified the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation that it had been named a beneficiary of a retirement account. Kathleen shares, “Why not give back to the facility that has been giving to us for 40 years!” Kathleen’s background in finance made the decision quite simple for both of them. “Planned gifts,” she explains, “are an easy way to give after you’ve gone without having to worry about money in your own lifetime.” Andy and Kathleen chose not to designate the use of their gift so that the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is free to use it however it most needs when the time comes. They trust that gifts like theirs will ensure the park for future generations.

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation formed the Champions’ Circle Society to recognize those individuals who have informed the foundation of their intentions to make a planned gift. For more information about planned giving or joining the Champions’ Circle Society, please contact the foundation office at 859-255-5727 or visit us on the web at www.khpfoundation.org. ◆
