That is why if you make any changes, try to report them to the clerk’s Office as soon as possible using the following methods.

Changing the name on your registration

There are many reasons why you may need a name change. In Kentucky, if you are married or divorced, you do not have to change the name on your registration because it is easy to verify that you are the owner of the vehicle. However, if you made any major changes to your name due to a court order, for example, you will have to update your registration.

The clerk’s office uses the information from the Social Security Administration to verify your identity. This is why, if you change your name officially due to marriage, divorce or court order, you must update it on your Social Security card first and then allow two business days for your record to be properly modified.

If you have a personalized plate, there is an additional fee of $25. This also applies when replacing your decals, even if you do not need a license plate replacement.

Changing the address on your registration

The clerk’s office uses your address to send you important notifications and documents. For example, before your registration expires, you will get a courtesy note reminding you to renew it. In addition, when you request services using the online system, your documents are sent to the address specified in the DMV records. This is why it is of paramount importance that you keep your address up to date with the clerk’s office.

Whenever you change your address, whether it is within the state or if you are a new resident, you have 10 days to update your driver’s license information. To do this you will need to provide your out-of-state license and proof of your Kentucky residential address.

After updating your driver’s license, you will have to request a duplicate registration receipt to show your new address. This is not strictly necessary since your record will be automatically updated when you change the information on your driver’s license. When you renew your registration, your new address will show on the documents.
