THE NEWSLETTER OF THE KENTUCKIANA BLUES SOCIETY “...PRESERVING, PROMOTING AND PERPETUATING THE BLUES.”
Louisville, Kentucky Incorporated 1989 June 2013
The fifth annual Smokin' on the River BBQ, Blues and Brews Festival takes place on Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15 at the Riverstage in Jeffer-sonville, IN. The Friday night headliner is Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues from Chicago. Branch got his start playing with Willie Dixon's Chicago All-Stars. He's recorded with several blues legends including Johnny Winter, Koko Taylor, Honeyboy Edwards and Taj Mahal just to name a few. He's won multiple W.C. Handy Awards, four Chicago Music Awards, an Emmy and has been nominated for three Grammy Awards. Last year the Sons of Blues celebrated their 35th anniversary. The band takes the stage at 9:00 pm. The festival is a sanctioned Kansas City Barbeque Society event and will in-clude a barbecue and brew tasting tent. You can find more information online at www.smokinontheriverbbq.com.

3 BLUES NEWS June 2013
Nine bands are signed up for this year's KBS Challenge band contest on Sunday, June 2. They include the Blue Meridian Band, the Clay Street Blues All Stars, Doug Wright & the No-mads, G. Miles & the Hitmen, the Here for the Party Band, the Hoodoo Blues Band, Laurie Jane, the River City Blues Band and Trouble Junction. The competition is sponsored by Four Roses Bourbon and will be at Stevie Ray's. Doors open at 3:00 pm, the contest stars at 4:00 pm and admission is $5.00.
We are working on several projects this year to mark the 25th anniversary of the Kentuckiana Blues Society. Local artist and bluesman Jim Masterson is putting the final touches on a paint-ing we will raffle off later in the year. The portrait depicts a "KBS Dream Band" with Sonny Sit-graves on drums, Jimmy Brown on bass, Foree Wells on guitar, Jim Rosen on harmonica and Mary Ann Fisher on vocals. We'll also produce a special edition of our newsletter Blues News like we did for the 20th anniversary. Last month, we started work on a blues compilation CD we should have ready in time for the anniversary in November. The KBS board has invited twelve bands to record one original song each for this CD. The songs will be recorded at DMR
Music in Charlestown, IN with the assistance of owner Dana Roy. Dana and Mike Lynch of da Mudcats are the recording engineers for the CD. Rocky Adcock and I will work as co-executive producers for the project. The following artists have been asked to be on the CD: Big Poppa Stampley, da Mudcats, Jimi V & Screamin’ John, Jimmy Davis, Joe DeBow & Danny Henderson, Lamont Gillispie & 100 Proof, Little T&A, Mark Stein and The Rib Tip Kings, Mississippi Adam Riggle, the River City Blues Band, Sue O’Neil and The KingBees. CD's will be sold for $15 each with $1 from every CD going to each band and $3 going to the KBS. You can follow the progress of the compilation disc on our Facebook page. We are looking for sponsors for our compilation CD. Sponsorships are $200 each and you get your name, or the name of your organization or company, in the credits and a copy of the CD. If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected] or 502/724-9971.
Notable events this month include the Paul Thorn Band at the Iroquois Amphitheater on Friday, June 7 and Gregg Allman on Wednesday, June 26. Thorn may have been born in Wisconsin but his Tupelo, MS upbringing greatly influenced his musical style. Allman gained his fame with band that bears his name in the 1960's and 1970's. His last album in 2011 called Low Country Blues was produced by T-Bone Burnett and earned Allman a Grammy nomination for Best Blues Al-bum of the year. The Iroquois Park venue has hosted some excellent blues-related shows the last few years including the Tedeschi Trucks Band, the Jug Band Jubilee and local bands King Sonic and The Jaywalkers. Only one other national act in our area to mention this month. New York guitarist Poppa Chubby will be at Jim Porter's on Friday, June 14.
Festivals during the month of June including the week long W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival (http://www.handyblues.org/) in Henderson, KY June 8 through the 15. The Smokin' on the River BBQ, Blues & Brews Festival (http://www.smokinontheriverbbq.com/) in Jeffersonville, IN on June 14 and 15. The Smoke on the Square BBQ Festival (https://www.facebook.com/SmokeOnTheSquare) in Franklin, IN is June 28 and 29. Those last two festivals are sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society so you know the food will be worth the trip.
The deadline to apply for this year's KBS solo/duo competition is Monday, July 1. The contest is Sunday, August 11 at The Maple Inn. The winning act receives $500, local studio recording time from Alfresco Place, will be booked for another show in 2013 and will represent the KBS next February in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge.
If you haven't been to Stevie Ray's in a while, stop by and check out the recent changes to the venue on Main Street. A new dance floor has been installed along with new carpeting. Large, flat screen televisions replace the old ones. I've been told the sound system is being upgraded and improved. June and Judy have been doing a great job along with the rest of the staff. You can always find out what's going on at Stevie Ray's by checking their website at http://www.stevieraysbluesbar.com/.

Blues Night At The Filson
THE FILSON HISTORICAL SOCIETY FEBRUARY 15, 2013 THE 10TH STREET BLUES BAND
Once a year Sonny Sitgraves, James Watkins, Billy Byrd and Pen Bogert get together at the Filson Club to show a select group what the Blues is/was all about. Among the dignitaries present this year was Howard Rosenberg who commented that “the boys' sound makes you think you were on Maxwell Street in Chicago” – an indoor/outdoor shopping area where many musicians plied their trade. Amongst the peoples on the street were Jugglers and clowns and mimes and jokesters and musicians and singers. Unfortunately Urban Re-newal wiped out this entire area to make room for skyscrapers and apartment buildings.
This year, Sonny introduced the band and commented that “not even counting Pen - there’s almost 300 years of music history sitting here.” Which was nice, but then he said “I shoulda stayed in Chicago when I retired instead of coming back to Mayberry” – which no one in the room laughed at except him.
Anyway, the boys were in good form this night. It is really amazing when you hear that they never practice and rarely play out except for this night once a year at the Filson Club.
We were graced with eleven songs:
1. By The Time They? (in same key as the next song) 2. Hush Hush 3. Do The Boogie Woogie 4. Sittin’ On Top Of The World 5. Got My Mojo Working 6. Going To New York BREAK 1. Big Boss Man 2. Fred Murphy – from Memphis song 3. Sweet Home Chicago 4. Ludella 5. Rock Me Baby
Sonny had a couple of cat naps on songs 5 and 6 by lean-ing into the window at his back while he kept up his drum-ming. Pen has given up playing his 6 string lap steel guitar but still keeps up his chops on his 1952 Blonde Gibson that he bought from Jimmy Brown– which he still won’t sell to me.
It was a good evening for the 74 people who bought tickets to this event. We hope to see everyone back again and if you haven’t witnessed the Blues shows by some of Louis-ville’s Original Blues Talent – maybe you can get out next year to watch.

7 BLUES NEWS June 2013
Robert Johnson’s most memorable (and likely most covered) song is “I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom”. I have listened to this song many times and it has become my favorite Johnson tune. The static on the recording, guitar and singing take you back to the era in which it was recorded. This song was the second recording of Johnson’s short career and was made on Monday No-vember 23, 1936 in San Antonio Texas. For reference, the lyrics are printed below.
I’m gon’ get up in the mornin’ I believe I’ll dust my broom I’m gon’ get up in the mornin’ I believe I’ll dust my broom Girl friend, the black man you been lovin’ Girlfriend, can get my room
I’m gon’ write a letter Telephone every town I know If I can’t find her in West Helena She must be in East Monroe, I know
I don’t want no woman Wants every downtown man she meet I don’t want no woman Wants every downtown man she meet She’s a no good doney They shouldn’t ‘low her on the street
I believe I believe I’ll go back home I believe I believe I’ll go back home You can mistreat me here, babe, But you can’t when I go home
And I’m getting up in the mornin’ I believe I’ll dust my broom And I’m getting up in the mornin’ I believe I’ll dust my broom Girlfriend, the black man you been lovin’ Girlfriend, can get my room
I’m gonna’ call up Chiney See is my good girl over there I’m gonna’ call up China See is my good girl over there If I can’t find her on Phillipine Island She must be in Ethiopia somewhere
For some time, there has been a great deal of controversy about what Johnson meant by “Dust my broom”. Researchers have been studying his music and digging for any information about him and his songs for decades. Over the years pieces of his life have slowly been put together, still, no explanation of these lyrics has been unearthed.
Ernie Oertle was the talent scout working for the American Record Company that took Johnson to San Antonio to record, at the recommendation of H.C. Speir. Research into Oertle’s past has not revealed any clues as to the meaning of the lyrics, but has provided an insight into other aspects of Johnson’s life and recordings.
My own explanation of the lyrics relates this line to the rest of the song. Johnson’s girl has left and he no longer shares his bed-room with her. As everyone knows, an unused room collects dust so in this case he needs to dust his bedroom. The black man she has been loving, can get his room because he has no need for it (without her that is).
For historical reference, it should be noted that in the 1930’s which is when this song was recorded, dust was on everybody’s mind especially in the Texas and Oklahoma area since this was the era of the American Dust Bowl.

New Music Reviews!
John Nemeth Soul Live Self Produced
John Nemeth, who has only been on the music scene for about 10 years, has established himself in the soul-blues world. With
the release of this live CD, and the simultane-ous release of another live CD (“Blues Live”), he covers both genres. Previous releases have been more of a mixture of blues and soul, but in this twin release he attempts to separate the two (Author’s note- I have not heard the other CD). There is definitely some blues overtones in some of the songs on this CD.
Fans of Nemeth will immediately recognize him here. His Robert Cray-like voice and the soul music accompaniment has more energy than say, Eric Lindell. Although known for his har-monica prowess, his voice is the more powerful here.
There are 12 songs on this CD, 9 of which are originals. Kid Anderson, the one-time guitarist for Charlie Musselwhite, guitarist for Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, and an accomplished pro-ducer, plays guitar on the CD, recorded and mixed it. The quality of the recording is excel-lent and all instruments and Nemeth’s voice and harp sound as crisp and clear as if he were in the studio (with some appreciative, clapping fans of course).
Fans of Nemeth’s previous releases will defi-nitely enjoy this live CD. For those who have not experience Nemeth before, this is a good place to start. You can visit www.johnnemethblues.com for more information and HD music videos.

Mitch Woods Blues Beyond Borders VizzTone
Mitch Woods is a boogie pianist last reviewed by this author in 2010 with his “Gumbo Blues” re-lease. This CD is a live
set recorded in Istanbul Turkey. The recording is quite well recorded for a live CD. The music includes some of his standards like “Solid Gold Cadillac”, “Mojo Mambo”, “Rocket 88” and 11 others. One thing that caught my ear was the
9 BLUES NEWS June 2013
saxophone on the CD played by Amadee Castenell. Wood’s piano is really good but the sax is not only exceptional, but sometimes overshadows the piano.
Anyone unfamiliar with Woods should know that his music is New Orleans boogie style music. If you like this type of mu-sic you are guaranteed to enjoy this CD. In addition to the CD, there is a DVD included in the package. There are 14 songs on the DVD and 4 “DVD Extras” meaning interviews.
Woods admits to being pleasantly surprised that his music translates well into the international arena. He did 26 shows in 20 cities in 5 weeks and thus the name of the CD. As they say in Turkey, “Bastan basa blues”-“Blues is everywhere.”
Anyone that likes New Orleans boogie piano will like this live music performed by top notch and well respected musi-cians. The DVD is worth watching too. You can visit www.mitchwoods.com for more information and samples.

Butch Williams How Do You Like Me Now Gemini Music/BMI/Stargazer Records
What an eclectic mix…blues, R&B, pop, jazz!
Starting with “A Horse With No Name”, than an uptempo blues “Tell Me Mama”, “Highway 61 Blues”, a 4/4 shuffle, then “Tears In Vain”, a sensitive jazzy ballad. He keeps a variety of sounds coming your way. Great musicianship from all the players.
Great vocals from Marjorie Marshall on “I Wanna Hear It From You” and a great reworking of Lowell Fulson’s classic “Reconsider Baby”.
Of course, the intro to “How Do You Like Me Now”, very similar to the Contours’ “Do You Love Me” but still a great song. Great groove on Willie Dixon’s “Down At The Bottom”, but actually my favorite is “Tears In Vain”, the very groovy, jazzy instrumental.
Great CD! Give it a listen.

Sterling Koch Let It Slide Full Force Music
Like slide guitar? Love slide guitar? Can't get enough of slide guitar? Sterling Koch has the answer: "Let It Slide," his latest recording.
Koch (pronounced 'Cook') shows just what tasteful, yet incendiary, lap slide can sound like on this CD of 13 tunes - eight originals and five covers. He keeps it moving all the time, yet somehow
never overdoes it. His skill is quite evident, interesting due to the fact that (according to press materials) he only started playing lap steel in 2004 -- and that was as a result of a neck injury which made it difficult to play guitar the traditional way.
And, let's be sure about something else here: This is blues. Rock-hard in some places, but blues, nonetheless.
Koch, who counts as mentors and friends such slide luminaries as Freddie Roulette, Darick Campbell and Calvin Cooke, can play fast and furious, or slow it down to a crawl - and play it all with equal ability. It seems his mentors advised him well.
The CD opener sets the tone for the whole recording, with a slow intro to "Shape I'm In" (one of his originals), then quickly moving into a full version of the same song with the strings screaming underneath Koch's fingers and slide.
Some of the more notable tunes (although they are all good) are a cover "It Hurts Me Too" (Elmore James), the afore-mentioned two-part opener, "My Baby's Hot," (written by another talented guitarist, Rick Vito), and the closer "Working Man's Blues (co-written with Freida Gantt).
While "Let It Slide" is a good title for this CD, Koch lets absolutely nothing slide by in the way of tone, mood or entertain-ment value. This is an excellent CD.
