Health Forms Every Kent Denver student must have a completed health form on file prior to participation in sports or attendance at school.

As part of our ongoing effort to streamline the annual health form submission process, Kent Denver eliminat-ed paper health forms and moved to an online system this year. This provides families with continuous access to students’ health forms, the ability to update docu-ments online as needed and the option for parents to take the digital health form file after students graduate.

Student health forms are available now on the Magnus SMR (Student Medical Record) system. A link to Mag-nus can be found on the Parent Portal. Health forms must be submitted by Mon., Aug. 1.

Physical ExamsAll students must have a physical exam every year. Students will not be allowed to go on field trips, partic-ipate in athletic practices or compete in athletic events without emergency and health information on file with Kent Denver School.

For your convenience, the Athletics department arranged for board-certified family nurse practitioners and pediatric nurse practitioners to provide annual exams on campus on Fri., Aug. 12, from 8 a.m.-noon, and on Mon., Aug. 15, from 6:30-11:00 a.m. Although this on-site program is designed to make it easier for families to comply with regulations for high school stu-dents, nurse practitioners will also provide physicals for Kent Denver Middle School students on these dates.

Physical exams last approximately 10 minutes, take place in the Field House and are available via appointment only. Each physical costs $30, payable with cash or check. An appointment request form is available on the Parent Portal.

“Parents and guardians may certainly schedule student physicals with their family health care provider if they prefer,” says Stephanie Kyser, Assistant Athletic Direc-tor. “It’s helpful to note that Upper School boys’ golf practice begins August 8 and all other Upper School fall sports begin practice on August 15. Please keep those dates in mind as you schedule appointments.”

Proof of ImmunizationStudents may not attend school until they have an im-munization card on file. If vaccinations are not current, students have 14 days to comply. When vaccinations require a series (i.e., Hepatitis B) students must submit a plan to the school signed by a physician as to when those series of vaccines will be completed.

Orientation Day: Mon., Aug. 22Middle School students should bring their books and school supplies to school. Parents and Guardians of sixth grade students will receive a technology orientation in El Pomar. See page 8 for details.Upper School students return from class trips this day.

First Day of Class: Tue., Aug. 23All students (Middle School and Upper School) should report to school by 8 a.m. on Opening Day.• Sixth Grade: Report to homeroom classrooms;

June 22, 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians of Middle Schoolers,

Even though the past school year has only recently concluded, work at Kent Denver is underway to launch the new academic year in fine style.

The beginning of the school year is often marked by a mixture of eager anticipation coupled with a sense of anxi-ety. Returning students need to reconnect with old friends, meet teachers, welcome new classmates into the group and meet the higher expectations of the next grade level at Kent Denver.

This section of the Back-to-School Planner includes important details about Middle School fall trips, necessary sup-plies for sixth-graders and for seventh- and eighth-graders, and a summary of Kent Denver activities that will take place in August.

I hope you will find this information helpful. Enjoy the rest of summer! I look forward to seeing you and your students in the fall.

Sincerely,

John N. KuntzMiddle School Division Head

For students new to the school, the need to make connections with classmates and faculty is obvious. The first weeks often set the tone for the entire year. For all students, whether new or returning, the opportunities to work with others, meet new challenges and build a sense of camaraderie are important to a successful year. Our fall trips allow us to address many of these tasks.

During the second week of school, the entire Middle School travels off campus for several days. Sixth-graders depart campus on Wed., Aug. 31. Our newest Kent Denver class will travel to the Buena Vista area where they will stay in a large cabin for two nights. Various activities are planned to help students meet their new classmates and teachers as well as to learn about the expectations at Kent Denver. Sixth-graders will return to campus at noon on Fri., Sep. 2.

Seventh- and eighth-graders will likewise depart on their own adventure on Wed., Aug. 31. They will travel to Jeffer-son Lake Campground near Jefferson, Colorado where they will camp for two nights. Eighth-graders will arrive at the campsite first and spend that Wednesday working on various group-building activities with the theme of leader-ship, apropos for their role in Middle School. Seventh-graders will spend the morning on campus working togeth-er as a class on several projects and then arrive at Jefferson Lake Campground in the afternoon. All seventh- and eighth-graders will spend the day on Thu., Sep. 1 working in their advisor groups. The seventh and eighth grades then return to campus by approximately 11 a.m. on Fri., Sep. 2. After helping to unpack and store camping equip-ment, they will be dismissed for the weekend.

More specific information will be mailed home in mid-August concerning the details for each grade level. The pur-pose of this letter is simply to inform you of the trip so you are certain to mark your calendar. As some families will want to begin gathering equipment early, an equipment list is included with this letter.

Finally, please be certain your child’s Emergency Health Form is completed and returned to the school. This form, accessible on the Parent Portal, is due Mon. Aug. 1. We must have the form in order for your child to participate in fall trip activities.

June 22, 2016

Dear Upper School Parents and Guardians,

e graduation of the Class of 2016 was only two weeks ago. It was lovely, indeed. We said goodbye to a won-derful group of students and launched them well into the world to do great things. And now, even this early in the summer, we begin preparing for the exciting school year to come.

e opening of school brings our pre-season sports practices, various meetings and gatherings, and the rst-day-of-school celebration led by our seniors. It is a time to rearm our community, to embrace warmly our new members, and to recommit to educational excellence and student wellness. New elements in our opening include pre-school retreats for all high school classes and our ninth-grade student and parent orientation.

is letter introduces the Upper School section of the Back-to-School Planner, which includes information about retreats, sports practices and other August events. I recommend that you review it, and of course, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either me or your child’s class dean.

Enjoy the summer! It goes fast. And please accept this early welcome to the 2016-17 school year. I cannot wait to see you and your family in the fall.

Best,

Eric V. Chandler, Ph.D.Upper School Division Head
