It is my pleasure to welcome you to Kent and the 45th annual Kent Cornucopia Day’s celebration with a multitude of activities, entertainment and fun for the whole family.

From its roots in hops and lettuce farming to aerospace and high-tech manufacturing, Kent has come a long way since incorporation, with nearly 124,000 residents making it the sixth largest city in Washington, and home to a culturally-fluent population who collectively speak 137 different languages.

Kent’s Cornucopia Days is South King County’s oldest and largest festival featuring a enormous street fair with a wonderful array of booths offering a variety of items, delicious smells from the food court, and entertainment to capture your attention. The Cornucopia Dragon Boat Races will be held on Lake Meridian Park again this year, and don’t miss the parade!

And if robust physical activity is more your speed, the City’s Parks Department and the Kent Arts Commission will host the ever-popular Cornucopia Days 5K. We hope you will join us in acknowledging all the work they do to bring such a successful fun run to Kent year after year.

KENT CORNUCOPIA DAYS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Kent Cornucopia Days 2016 royalty will be crowned at a ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday. Mayor Suzette Cooke will announce the names of the three scholarship winners: one young lady to be crowned as Miss Cornucopia. Two runners-up will become Cornucopia Princesses. These fortunate 2016 scholarship winners will be crowned by the current Miss Cornucopia, Kajal Sabhaya. This event will be held at the “Plaza Community Stage” held at Town Square Plaza (2nd & Smith St.) Participants in this event are judged on their strengths in academics, community service, and public speaking. Miss Cornucopia will recieve a scholarship of $3000. The Cornucopia Pricesses will also receive scholarships from the Kent Lions Foundation and will represent the Kent Lions and Cornucopia Days at many SEAFAIR events.

PARADE INFORMATIONOur children of Kent are encouraged to decorate their

bikes and practice their parade waves as parents and friends look on the sidelines. There won’t be a separate category for the kids this year but rather a chance just to join in and have fun being in our home town parade. We are anticipating the presence of several floats including our very own Kent Lions “Kent Cornucopia Days” float. SEAFAIR pirates and clowns, and the Seattle All City band.

SEAFAIR ROYALTY:In its 67th year, the tradition of SEAFAIR Royalty is

rich with custom and acclaim. Known throughout the Northwest and as far away as Mexico and Japan. SEAFAIR Royalty serves as the official “mascots” for SEAFAIR and Greater Seattle. King Neptune Rex and the Prime Minister for decades have embodied the Puget Sound Area’s image of fun, celebration and community involvement and esteem.

King Neptune Rex and his Prime Minister represent the SEAFAIR Festival at key events throughout the year. They symbolize the dignity of the community and serve as greeters and promotional spokespersons for the festival. The King is chosen for his community leadership and stature. The Prime Minister is chosen from the experienced ranks of SEAFAIR and provides festival continuity and knowledge.

The King is the highest honorary dignitary of SEAFAIR, is recognized as such throughout the Pacific Northwest, attends key SEAFAIR events and out-of-town festivals with the SEAFAIR Float tour, and serves as a representative of SEAFAIR and of the City of Seattle.

“Old Timers” King and Queen

Tucked away in the heart of the Kent Valley along the Green River, the O’Connell family’s 30-acre farm on Frager Road South remains timeless, preserved, one of the last of its kind in a changing landscape that supports Boeing’s empire, corporate warehouses and other growing industry. “I love this place,” said Tom O’Connell, the 92-year-old patriarch of a family whose roots can be traced back to more than 140 years in Kent, whose farm stands untouched by surrounding commercial development. O’Connell, a Kent pioneer, still maintains the same farm today that his grandfather, an Irish immigrant, established in 1872, and the same farm his father inherited in the 1950s. O’Connell hopes one day to pass the farm down to his two sons – Tom and Richard – who practically live next door. His four daughters – Eileen, Barbara, Monica, Kathryn – also keep close. “And I’m still living here, and I don’t know of any other farm in the whole valley that’s still under the same name,” he said. The large O’Connell family business – at its peak – managed as many as 100 cows daily – milking, bottling and selling fresh raw milk for families in the O’Brien community who would make the trip to the 85-acre dairy.

What’s O’Connell’s secret to his longevity?“He has a good sense of humor, very affable,

personable,” Margie, his wife, said. “He has good temperament ... and enjoys very good health.” Good health from a good run at life, he insists.

“A wonderful wife… we’ve had a great life,” O’Connell said. “Great woman behind me, and a great family. They say it takes a village. Well, our family is a village.” The O’Connells, long in retirement, enjoy 22 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.

KENT CORNUCOPIA DAYS DRAGON BOAT RACES ON LAKE MERIDIAN

Saturday the 9th, forty plus teams will come to Kent to race for medals. The races begin at 8:30 a.m. and finals are after 3 p.m. Teams are from western Canada, Washington & Oregon, along with individual paddlers from California and across the nation! There will be numerous local Kent teams racing for the honors. The Kent Lions and the Kent Dragon Boat Association have spent all year planning for this event; it is the largest Dragon Boat Race in the State of Washington. The beautiful venue of Lake Meridian provides the perfect location for this style of race while giving the team members and public an outstanding view. This race benefits the Northwest Lions Foundation for Sight and Hearing.

There will be food, vendors, displays and fun for all ages.

SHORT BACKGROUND ON DRAGON BOAT RACING

Dragon boat racing is people friendly, and takes into team’s people of varying degrees of athletic ability and physical limitations. Some teams are recreational, in condition, and others may be seriously athletic. Some others may be blind, survivors of disease such as cancer, have diabetes, and have other special needs. They learn about what they can achieve and do not allow themselves to be overwhelmed with any restrictions. They celebrate life by being actively engaged with it, and having a great time living it.

The time spent in a dragon boat results in teams learning to work together in unison to race to the finish line first. The skills that are acquired have more to do with technique and synchronization, than brawn. Upper body strength is achieved in the gym and increased in the dragon boat, however. Dragon boats can go at a fast clip, rising upon the water, as paddlers do up to 90 strokes and more a minute, an amount for a well seasoned experienced team. In China a dragon boat team looks like an extremely fast perpetual motion machine. The lighter the weight, the more seasoned the paddlers, the faster they can go.

The Kent Dragon Boat Association sent a team to Taiwan for the first time to participate in a Dragon Boat Festival in 2011 and sent another team in 2012. Practices take place Saturday mornings at 7:45 a.m. at the boat launch. Come join the fun!

Race starts at 9 amThe Kent Parks Department is pleased to present the Kent Cornucopia Days 5K Fun Run. Its focus

will be on encouraging families to participate together to get outside and exercise. The race

will take place on Saturday, July 9 at Three Friends Fishing Hole Park. Day of race registration will

begin at 7:30 am. The race features a fast down and back along the Green River Train.

KENT CORNUCOPIA DAYS 16TH ANNUAL “DRAGON BOAT RACES”

8:30 am to 5 pmEnjoy this beautiful event on Kent’s own Lake

Meridian. Nearly 50 Washington, Oregon, Canadian, California, and local teams will race in eight giant 45-foot boots with a crew of 22

people. Races begin at 8:30 am until 5 pm. The park will have activities for the family including

food booths, along with souvenir and team booths. Shuttle from Kent Fire Station #75,

Horizon Elementary School, Meridian Elementary School, and the 132nd Park & Ride lot.

•Kent Lions Club, working in association with the City of Kent has produced The Cornucopia Days event in Kent for the past 45 consecutive years.

The event has not only provided good family entertainment for the more than 200,000 attendees each year, but also has provided funding by which

Kent Lions have been able to generously contribute to community projects and charities.

•

Kent Historical Society Museum Since the early days of Kent, the community has come together

to celebrate with a summer festival. Sometimes it was called “Ezra Meeker Days,” or sometimes the “Lettuce Festival.” To continue a family festival that binds the current generations to their past is one of three mission statements adopted by the renamed event known today as “Kent Cornucopia Days”.

We encourage residents to reflect on Kent’s historical past. The Greater Kent Historical Society, which started in 1992, moved into the Historical Bereiter House in 1998. The house was built by Emil Bereiter in 1908. Emil was the owner of a lumber mill in the Covington area at the turn of the century. The 15-room house museum is furnished with period furniture that was donated by the people of Kent. Most of the museum displays what it was like to live in the Kent Valley around 1908. The Museum also has two “community rooms” where a wide variety of Kent stories are told. Today the house is used as an education to the past with exhibits displaying interesting artifacts, documents and photos.

The Museum grounds feature well maintained flower gardens, the Carriage House, and a number of monuments including Stuart Nakamura’s “Another Place, Another Time” an outdoor work of art honoring Kent’s Japanese-American community.

The mission of the Greater Kent Historical Society is to collect, preserve and promote the history of the Greater Kent area.

Hours: The Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, from noon to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Admission is by a suggested $2 donation; no tickets are required for entrance to the Museum.

The Kent Cornucopia Days has a long and historical presence in Kent.

Kent Cornucopia Days, as we know it today, has a history as an on-again, off-again summer festival in Kent for more than 80 years.

Beginning in the 1930s, as the Kent Lettuce Festival, the event was a cooperative effort of several community service organizations, led by Kent American Legion Post 15. The Kent Lions Club, which was originated in 1938, began an active role in the community festival beginning that year. The festival emphasized the valley’s cash farm crop of lettuce, the area’s main farm product in that period.

During the years from 1939 through World War II, the Lettuce Festival disappeared, only to emerge again in 1946 as the Kent Cornucopia Festival.

Cornucopia, which is Latin for “horn of plenty” and symbolized by the horn-shaped basket full of fruits and vegetables, was the festival’s new name because Kent had emerged as a producer of many farm crops besides lettuce and had a widely diversified agricultural base.

The Cornucopia Festival

existed in Kent until the mid-1950s. During the late-’50s and into the 1960s there was an

on-again, off-again Cornucopia Home Show during the summer, which was organized by one of the Kent Lions.

In 1969, the Cornucopia Home Show disappeared, and a festival reappeared but under the name Ezra Meeker Days in honor of Ezra Meeker, an early entrepreneur and farmer who first brought hops to the Kent Valley, which caused the farming economy to boom in the 1880s and 1890s. Meeker had run a business not far from the festival’s location decades earlier. Meeker Street in Kent still bears his name.

When the Kent Lions took over stewardship and management of the summer festival in 1972, they shortened the name to simply Meeker Days. But, as many know,

there was also a summer festival named Meeker Days (completely different event)

in Puyallup. The first Meeker Days was a two-block street fair, located at the site where The Commons complex now exists at Smith Street and Fourth Avenue.

In 1980, the Kent Lions renamed the Kent summer festival Cornucopia Days, thereby reverting to local tradition and relieving the confusion with the Puyallup festival. Then, in

1981, the Lions made another slight name change to Kent Cornucopia Days. That name has remained unchanged ever since.

Each year since 1970, Kent Lions have produced this summer festival during early July, including a large street fair, parade, carnival and numerous athletic events, including soccer tournaments, skateboarding competitions, as well as 5K and 10K running events. In 2001, the Lions added a dragon boat racing event on Lake Meridian, which has grown to be the largest such race in the state and enabled a thriving community of dragon boating competitors in the city of Kent.

Annually, more than 200,000 visitors attend various functions of Kent Cornucopia Days.

The Kent Cornucopia Days is treated as a project of the Kent Lions Club, a purpose of the Kent Lions Club, and one of the many events or activities for which the Kent Lions Club exists as a non-profit organization. The Kent Lions Club does allow and encourages non-member (non-voting) volunteers to serve on this committee.

8.The Kent Cornucopia Days is a

wholly owned project of the Kent Lions Club with all rights reserved to it. The Kent Lions Club owns all trade names, logos, trademarks, concepts, and historical assets associated with the Kent Cornucopia Days. No portion of the Kent Cornucopia Days may be used by anyone without expressed written permission of the Kent Lions Club. The Kent Lions Club has exclusive use and control of all public areas used by the Kent Cornucopia Days including a two (2)-block area beyond its visible and actual usage areas.

9.The Kent Lions Club and the Kent Cornucopia Days assume no liability or responsibility for any action, occurrence, or event that occurs at or during the Kent Cornucopia Days to any person, business, or property. All persons arriving, parking, viewing, working, or participating in the Kent Cornucopia Days will assume sole responsibility for any action that occurred by or to them and will hold the Kent Lions Club and the Kent Cornucopia Days harmless. The Kent Lions Club is not responsible for any damage, theft, loss of personal property, fire, injury (mentally or physically), or any other causes that may occur while said persons are attending, or affected by, the Kent Cornucopia Days or any other Kent Lions Club activity.
