It seems probable that 23 Dane John had been constructed within the infilled medieval ditchsurrounding the early Norman Castle. However, the ditch was re-cut, probably in the fourteenth centuryand may have served as an open sewer to be replaced by the Black Ditch in the seventeenth century. Inthe eighteenth century a brick-lined well or cess pit was dug through the soft infill of the medievalditch and it was that feature which was found in the recent structural examination of the property.[Au(abr)]SMR primary record number:2003/63

During the watching brief several details, mostly relating to the construction of the western tower, wereobserved and recorded. Primarily, it was discovered that the tower was constructed on top of afoundation, which was formed from two separate elements. The primary foundation consisted of largeun-mortared chalk blocks. Secondly, a sub-foundation of four layers of mortared flints was constructedon top of the chalk blocks. Lastly two buttresses were added to the western ends of the north and southwalls of the nave, clearly to aid in the support of the tower. The foundations of both buttresses werefound to abut the sub-foundations of the tower, providing clear evidence that they were constructedafter the building of the tower.
