COVID-19
Health and safety
The health and safety of our workers is our key priority as we
continue to deliver the Metro Tunnel Project, as is supporting social
distancing measures in line with current health advice.
We have strict protocols in place to protect the safety of our
construction workforce, including enhanced industrial cleaning
arrangements, provision of personal protective equipment and
measures to reduce staff contact, including staggered shifts.

commissioning works
• Installation of new rail tracks, sleepers, ballast, formation material,

• Closure of Hobsons Road car park for 4 weeks from early-May
• Investigating additional parking locations in the area
• Lane closure of Hobsons Road to facilitate heavy vehicle movements
and track work
• Construction of a temporary access ramp adjacent to Childers Street to
provide access to rail corridor.
• Traffic management will support flow of traffic during works

Retrieval works
• 24/7 works, ongoing until May 2020:
• Cleaning and disassembly of the TBM cutterhead and front and middle shield sections
inside the retrieval shaft
• Lifting and loading of cutterhead and front and middle shield sections out of the retrieval
shaft
• Transportation of the TBM gantries back through the constructed tunnel
• Oversized TBM parts to be transported at night, subject to permit conditions

• Finalising creative design brief with the project curator
• Shortlisting designers who will respond to the brief in the next month
Next Steps
• Community feedback from 2019 workshops and development plan public display & pop-ups to
be provided to the curator to assist in informing design concepts
• Community workshop to meet the designer and provide feedback (Timing TBC)
• Drop-in community information session promoted via letterbox drop and social media (Timing
TBC)
• Plan to finalise design in mid-2020
FLOODWALL DESIGN TREATMENT
Development Plan Update
• RIA currently refining designs for proposed rail services – Communications Equipment Room (CER) and Signalling
Equipment Room (SER) alongside rail corridor
• Updated rail services building design will be part of amendments to the development plan for public display
• Other proposed amendments:
• Inclusion of 1-39 Hobsons Road into development plan and project area
• Flood plain management / protection alongside rail corridor
• Minor updates to station entry and forecourt
• Minor update of Childers streetscape design
• Editorial updates to reflect proposed amendments
• We will continue to keep you up to date about the amendment and public display timing
Rescheduled public display – anticipated for late April/May
PLANNING UPDATE
• Western Portal decline structure is located in the Maribyrnong River flood plain
• Metro Tunnel Project and Melbourne Water requirement to offset the loss of flood plain
• Site investigations at:
- 1-39 Hobsons Road rail embankment
- Newells Paddock
- Alternative options within flood plain area
Next Steps
• Meeting with Maribyrnong City Council, City of Melbourne and Melbourne Water to discuss
options
• Commence early site investigations at Newells Paddock (mid-2020)
