The Bachelor of Science in Art Education prepares students to become effective art educators in the classroom, from pre-K to high school. In addition to strong training in the foundations of art, our curriculum places students in classroom settings early in their programs, and provides the theoretical coursework necessary to become successful teachers.

Program highlights include rigorous foundational training in drawing, 2- and 3-dimensional design, and computer applications in art. Explore a variety of media, including sculpture, ceramics, photography, printmaking, and more. Study in small classes with intensive faculty interaction. We give you the chance to both learn and exhibit your work on- and off-campus.

Students who have completed a BFA in Art and wish to earn initial teacher certification should investigate KSU’s Master of Arts in Teaching Art.

Art Education

Our Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History provides a broad foundation in the history of art and its social, intellectual, and technical contexts. The interdisciplinary nature of this liberal arts degree allows students to take courses in art history and studio art, as well as in fields such as anthropology, history, literature, philosophy, and psychology. Study in one or more foreign languages such as Italian, German, French, or Spanish is strongly recommended.

The Art History degree prepares you for work in galleries and museums, or for further graduate study. Our students develop marketable skills such as critical thinking and effective communication, training them for a range of careers and professional schools. You’ll study an array of artworks and monuments from many periods, regions and cultures. You’ll have multiple study-abroad, internship, and museum studies opportunities. You’ll also have the opportunity to publish your research in a campus journal and present it at regional and national conferences.

Our ceramics concentration provides solid training in the foundations of art and the opportunity to explore a wide variety of media. After completing our foundational courses, you will progress to more intensive study within your chosen area of specialization.

You’ll obtain rigorous training in drawing, 2- and 3-dimensional design, and computer applications in art. You’ll explore a variety of media, including photography and printmaking, and benefit from intensive coursework, small class sizes and close faculty interaction. Get to know your peers through Mudslingers, KSU’s student ceramics club.

The ceramics program offers multiple opportunities to exhibit your work, both on- and off-campus. Numerous internship and study-abroad programs are also available.

“Our cutting-edge Graphic Communications concentration delivers solid training in the foundations of art, and prepares you for a creative career in an increasingly visual world. You’ll study the basics of typography and electronic illustration. You’ll immerse yourself in the world of marketing with hands-on experience in publication design, advertising, and packaging. You’ll explore interactive media design, web design, and motion graphics. Our advanced courses feature small class sizes, allowing for close faculty supervision and thorough study of new graphic technologies. We offer the opportunity to exhibit your work both on- and off-campus. Numerous internship and study-abroad options are also available.

Graphic Communications

Our Painting & Drawing concentration features comprehensive coursework designed to prepare students as professional artists. Our internationally acclaimed faculty-artists provide a solid foundation in both traditional and contemporary techniques. Students experience diverse techniques of image creation, ranging from technical to conceptual. Advanced coursework emphasizes the independence of the student artist. Various media, methods and styles include oil, aqueous media, and concept-based art.

Small class sizes allow for individual faculty attention. Opportunities to exhibit your work on- and off-campus are available. Numerous internship and study-abroad opportunities enhance this concentration.

Painting & Drawing

The Photography concentration embraces a highly conceptual fine-arts program emphasizing creative, lens-based media. You’ll receive solid training in the foundations of art and experience a wide variety of media.

Advanced courses in the Photography concentration include Figure Drawing, Digital and Film Photography, and Lighting and Large Formats. Our small, intensive courses allow for close faculty interaction, and you’ll have the opportunity to exhibit your work both on- and off-campus. Numerous internship and study-abroad opportunities are available.

The Printmaking concentration offers professional courses to help meet the demands of today’s marketplace. You’ll receive solid training in the foundations of art and opportunities to explore diverse kinds of media.

Printmaking students will take advanced courses in Printmaking, Planographic Techniques, and Book Arts/Papermaking. Our small, intensive courses allow for close faculty interaction, and you’ll have the opportunity to exhibit your work both on- and off-campus. Numerous internship and study-abroad opportunities are available.

Our sculpture program provides solid training in the foundations of art and exposure to a wide variety of media. After completing our foundational courses, you’ll progress to more intensive study within your chosen area of specialization.

You’ll explore a variety of media, including photography and printmaking and benefit from intensive coursework, small class sizes and close faculty interaction. Join the KSU Sculpture Club and get to know other student artists.
