Faith, Love, Action

July, 2016

From Our Pastor

O ur faith is simple.

The words of Christ remind us of this fact. Yet, over the past 2000 years we have made Christianity complex. We have created theologies and doctrines and dogma. We have written thou-sands of pages and have spent thousands of hours debating one particular point of scripture against another. Our discussions and our writings are an important part of our Christian tradition. It has helped us define who we are and who we want to be in light of the Christ event. Our work will contin-ue and we will be better informed because of it

Nevertheless, in light of recent events, it is important to remember the core of Christ’s message to us. Let us, for the moment, leave our theological debates behind. Let us, for the moment, stop pondering the details of our theological de-sires. Let us, in this moment, listen for the voice of God. There is a simple message to hear. This mes-sage is beyond politics and propa-ganda. God speaks to the core of who we are and who we are called to be.

Once Jesus was asked, "Teacher how do I inherit eternal life?" His answer was simple, "Love God and love your neighbor as you would yourself." This is the core of our faith. There is nothing more and there is nothing less. We are called to love one another no mat-ter who the other is. May we have the courage to see this with clarity and to act boldly in a world in need of healing. God's love will find a way.

College for Women, both Meth-odist schools. She was active in the Asheville Chapter of the Jun-ior American Red Cross. She participated in a program at War-ren Wilson College to help pave the way for black students. After college and a bout with TB (and training in Voc Rehab in X-ray and EKGs) she went to work in doctors’ offices. After marriage to Marvin and the births of her two children, she stayed home and became a seamstress for other people. In the mid-90s she went to work outside the home, using her training in education to teach reading in the city schools for over 20 years. She joined KPC, “eons ago, it seems,” she says and served as treasurer for Presbyteri-an Women. She also served as secretary for the first Kenilworth Residents’ Association.

Marvin was also born in Asheville and lived with his grandparents. He was educated in the Asheville school system and attended Ste-phens Lee High School, where he was involved in many school ac-tivities including student council and the founding of the civil right organization ASCORE that worked to integrate Asheville. “first couple.” Marvin, courtly and genial, blessed with a sono-rous voice, when asked how he’s doing, always beamingly gives the same heartfelt answer: “Good as gold and three times as pre-cious.” Cordelia, regal, calm, and measured, speaks with warm au-thority and gifts the choir and audience with her lovely soprano voice.

Cordelia was born in Asheville, a “p.k.,” she says. An only child, she always wished for an older sister “to help with the dishwash-ing.” Blessed with a talent for speaking and acting, she partici-pated in church “at an early age.” She also sang in school glee clubs and in high school and college choirs. American Enka Corp. and other companies in the area. Among the honors that have been bestowed on Marvin are that of Worshipful Master of his Masonic Lodge, Grand Master of Masons, and NC’s highest honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

Marvin joined KPC “some 25 years” after his wife, deciding that it was “ time for his family to be together.” Says Marvin: “I have found the love of God in this place.”

A brutal storm rolled through Kenilworth the evening of

July 7. A very large limb from a tree bordering us and the Wells’ home fell on the Church. As you see in the picture, the tree split half way up. The entire tree had to be taken down. Thank you to Gus Adams for his quick response getting Newcomb Tree Service out to remove the limb on the Church and the tree.

The limb damaged the guttering and roof on the corner. Thank you to Mike Cox and Gus for coordi-nating the necessary repairs.

Murmurs by Julian Marbut

IT IS NO SECRET

By Stuart Hamblen

The chimes of time ring out the news

Another day is through

Someone slipped and fell

Was that someone you?

You may have longed for added strength

Your courage to renew

Do not be disheartened

For I have news for you

It is no secret what God can do

What He's done for others, He'll do for you

With arms wide open, He'll pardon you

It is no secret what God can do

There is no night for in His light

You never walk alone

Always feel at home

Wherever you may go

There is no power can conquer you

While God is on your side

Take Him at His promise

Don't run away and hide

It is no secret what God can do

What He's done for others, He'll do for you

With arms wide open, He'll pardon you

It is no secret what God can do

K atherine Jowers and Jeff Scoltock attended the Af-

fair In White event for Loving Foods. It is the annual summer social gathering and fundraiser event for that organization and takes place in the penthouse "Top of the Plaza" cocktail room of the Renaissance hotel with great views of the city.

Darcel Grimes was the guest Mas-ter of Ceremonies. A lot of fun was had and money raised. Silent auction items were donated by local artists and businesses, and several local businesses also spon-sored the event, including Adams & Adams Construction (our own Gus and Katie)

The event raises a good deal of the funds that keep Lov-ing Food Resources going during the year, plus it's a lot of fun

L oving Food Resources will hold it's annual General

Meeting on July 27 at 6pm in the Kenilworth Center. Are you curi-ous about the financial health of the organization or want to learn more about the new strategic plan being implemented? Come on out to learn more about this invalua-ble agency in our community.

Garden Tour A Success

T he Green-works Gar-

den Tour was a huge success! Hundreds of avid gardeners and plant lovers toured our beautiful "outdoor sanc-tuary." Many visitors were amazed by our unique model of growing food at the site of distribution. We were able to in-crease awareness of Loving Food Resources and the wonderful work they do in our community. Thanks to all who helped out that day--we were delighted to host such a great event. - Katie

Fun at ‘The Block’

T he Loving Food Resources "Affair in White" was held on the top floor of the Renaissance Hotel June 25. The "AIW" is the annual

signature fund raising event for LFR. This year TV personality, Darcel Grimes, was the celebrity host. The final fund raising tally hasn't been released yet but more tickets were sold this year than any other. Thanks to all who attended! -Katie

O n June 28, I had the honor of visiting the International

Civil Rights Museum in Greens-boro, NC. The museum is in the Woolworth building where 4 brave young men sat at the lunch counter and requested service. What they did changed the histo-ry of the world and ushered in the Civil Rights Movement here in the United States. I left the museum overwhelmed, inspired and recommitted to continue the work that they started. As soon as I returned to Asheville, I had lunch at the Woolworth in down-town Asheville and thought of

July 9! We set up board games, coloring books and a community craft project for all to enjoy in the park. A Black Lives Matter pro-test was held in downtown Ashe-ville the same day and the protest-ers ended their march in Triangle Park. We thought we were hosting a community fun day but ended up providing a safe place for people to gather, share stories, organize and grieve. God used us in a powerful way that day. It shows that even when you least expect it God is at work. We are hosting another Family Fun Day in Triangle Park on August 6. Trian-gle Park is located at 70 S. Market St. in downtown Asheville. It takes us all to make our outreach events suc-cessful. Invite your friends, play a game, show up! We will have a surprise chef. See Katie Adams for more info.

We will be hosting another event on "The Block" this summer at Triangle Park in downtown Asheville on Satur-day, August 6. This is in partnership with the Just Folks Organization and will involve food, fun, music and fellowship. Please volunteer to help set up or breakdown. Thanks to Gus for providing the music. See Katie Adams with questions or suggestions.

K enilworth Presbyterian Church was honored to

host a Vacation Bible School with five other faith communi-ties. The other participating churches included: St. John "A" Missionary Baptist Church, Nazareth First Missionary Bap-tist Church, Fairmount Mission-ary Baptist Church, St. John Baptist Church (Fletcher) and New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

The event was held over four nights and included an opening worship, individual classes, crafts, games and excellent food! During each night, we had over 120 participants--including dozens from KPC!

The overall theme of the Bible school was: "I've got talent--showcasing my work for Jesus!" The theme verse for the week was from Paul's letter to the Ephesians: "We are Gods handi-work (work of art) created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do." Each night we studied a particular character of the Bible and the talent that God gave them to follow their call. Then we looked at different vocations that are related to God's call to everyone.

The week was filled with laugh-ter and energy and singing and running and crafting and study-ing God's word--Wow!! But no matter what we did, we felt the Holy Spirit among us. Many thanks to everyone who partici-pated and volunteered and we are grateful to our congregation for using the building for such a wonderful mission. Well done everyone!
