Dear Teacher,
The Resource Material for English covers Classes I to VIII. It is an
attempt to empower the teacher with more activities which can be
used in the classroom. The need to master English has always been
felt and hence Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan decided to target the
elementary classes, so that students can be confident by the time
they reach the secondary stage. The heavy stress on writing, at the
cost of developing other language skills, has been one of the main
causes of our students’ poor communication skills. This book
attempts to redress the imbalance by adding inputs on developing
listening skills along with the other skills of reading, writing and
speaking.
Each Unit of the textbook is covered. The four core skills of
Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing are the focus points of the
material. Teachers can make copies of certain activities or
exercises for use in the classroom.
Teachers should use the Listening and Speaking skills, in particular,
so that our students are as comfortable using English as they are
their mother tongue. Feel free to select some activities or all of
them, the choice is yours. Do keep a judicious balance between oral
communication and writing practice.
I hope this book proves useful to the teacher, who is our first
stakeholder and through the teacher to the students who are our
first beneficiaries.
USHA ASWATH IYER
DIRECTOR, ZIET BHUBANESWAR

facilitate teachers to develop language skills in
the students. The focus is on Listening and
Speaking which are neglected areas in our normal
teaching.

use all the activities mentioned against each
competency.
3. You can use all the activities or only selected
activities, the choice is yours.
4. Activities may be customised as per the
requirement of the class.
5. When required, adequate number of
worksheets/activity sheets should be got
photocopied in advance.

When the teacher takes up the lesson he can take up this listening
passage in the classroom and administer the same in given direction. Two students take part and others listen to it. It is in dialogue format.
(I WANT SOMETHING IN A CAGE)
The core idea of giving this passage is to inculcate quality of compassion and kindness towards birds and animals.
Student-A- You are very fond of sparrows, so you feel sorry about the injuries caused to them.
What would you suggest to help and save them?
Listen to the answer given by Student-B
Student-B - There are a few chances of sparrows dashing into the walls and ceiling fans can injure them. You can switch the fan off, or you can even close
the door so that they can’t come inside when the fan is on.
Put artificial nets for them outside the room at a height of at least 10 feet. You
can make nests or bird houses at home with a wooden box about 1 foot in length and breadth with a round hole in the front about 5 inches in size to let
the birds enter in it.
Put some old clothes and loose cotton in it to make it cozy, Keep some mixed grains like wheat, bajra, maize and water in a clay pot near it. Sparrows will

Here is a passage on Mahatma Gandhi “The Father of the Nation”
Teacher: The school will remain closed tomorrow.
Suresh: Why, Madam?
Teacher: It is Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. He was born on 2nd
October.
Gopi: Would you please tell us something about Mahatma Gandhi, madam?
Teacher: Before 1947, we were under British Rule for a long time. Many
leaders fought for our country’s freedom. Gandhi was the greatest of them. He did not believe in war. He told the people that freedom could be won peacefully. He hated being ruled by the British, but he did not hate
the British people. He helped our country to win freedom from Britain without striking a blow.
Peter: So it was Gandhi who helped us win freedom.
Teacher; Yes it was chiefly Gandhi who won freedom for us.
Vinod: Why is he called the father of the Nation?
Teacher: He was like a father to the people of our country. He helped us
to grow into a great nation.
Mohan: In every picture we see him wearing just a loincloth. Isn’t it
strange? Why didn’t he dress like others?
Teacher: It is true Gandhi usually wore nothing more than a loincloth.
“Why should I wear rich clothes, while a lot of people are too poor to buy clothes?” he thought. So he wore a simple piece of cloth like the poorest people in India. This cloth was handspun at his ashram. While
journeying by train he always travelled in a third class compartment, because all the poor people of India travelled in third class

And round as an O.
Pretty moon pretty moon,
How you shine through the door,
And make it all bright
On my nursery floor;
You shine on my playthings,

Voice is one of the greatest gifts of God to man. You should make the best
possible use of this rare talent. In your contacts with others or in the
development of your personality, your voice and tone are of great importance.
Even if you are a man of brilliant ideas, you will be ineffective if your voice is
not sweet. You should have good health so that vibrations of your voice are
strong and effective. While speaking face to face with others or on the phone,
regulate your voice, according to your ideas. Your personal charm, friendliness
and kindness are proved beyond doubt by your voice. While speaking to people
your warmth and earnestness would be infectious and fill the listeners with a
sense of friendliness. Never speak in a rude voice. A little eagerness and joy in

An honest man is rewarded by God
Once there was a wood cutter who was very poor. He earned his livelihood by
cutting trees in the forest and selling wood in the market. One day when he was cutting wood near the bank of a river, his axe fell into the river. He tried to
fish out his axe but the river was very deep and he could not locate it. He was at a loss to know what to do. He just sat near the bank and started crying.
Suddenly the god Mercury appeared before him and asked him why he was
crying. The wood cutter told him the whole story. God consoled him and assured him that he would bring back his axe. He disappeared into the water
and soon returned with a golden axe. The wood cutter refused to accept it saying that it was not his. God again dipped into the water and this time
returned with a silver axe. The wood cutter still refused to take it because it did not belong to him. God then brought an iron axe. It was his own axe. The wood cutter was very happy to see it.

The Hen that laid Golden eggs
Once upon a time, there lived an old man who was very, very greedy. He was quite rich and knew no want. He had a very beautiful hen that laid a golden
egg daily. These eggs had made him even richer. But his hunger for money was never satisfied. He was always thinking of having more and more money. He
wanted to be one of the richest men in the world.
The old man’s wife was a noble lady. She hated her husband’s habit of
hankering after wealth. She always requested him to give up greed and be a good man. But the old man did not care for her requests at all. So he went on with his activities. He had only one aim before his eyes and that was to amass
more and more wealth. It was mid-winter and the day was extremely cold. A chilly wind was blowing. The old man was sun-bathing in the compound of his
house. Suddenly an idea flashed across his mind. He said, “My hen lays a golden egg daily. It must be having a large number of golden eggs in its body.

important because it’s a habitat for many civilizations. For some countries, river is the biggest route of transportation. Rivers often offer

carriers of many nutrients.
