WELCOME BACK KENDALL FAMILIES!

WELCOME FOR THE FIRST TIME KENDALL KINDERGARTENERS AND NEW STUDENTS!

Summer2014

Dear Kendall Families:

Welcome to the 2014 -2015 school year! I know there remains a few weeks of summer vacation left, so do enjoy every minute. It has been a busy summer in the Kendall office as we plan for the upcoming opening of school. As we prepare for a new school year we will continue our goals in improving student learning and high achievement.

Staff members have continued to work throughout summer on professional development in Common Core Standard instruction for math and literacy. Work was completed both at building and district levels. I am proud that Kendall staff represented lifelong learning and the desire to improve current instructional practice that will improve student achievement even during summer break!

This year will include many familiar and some new routines and practices. The essentials will be outlined and provided in this packet for ALL new families as well as those who are returning to Kendall. The Kendall Parent Handbook will be available on line at http://kendall.ipsd.org for more detailed information regarding Kendall's policies and procedures. In addition, District 204's Parent-Student Handbook is available on line at http://www.ipsd.org.

Effective communication supports and provides students with the best possible support to be successful. Continued opportunities will be offered electronically. For classroom and grade level communication, you will have log in access to Edline, your teacher's home page. Messages from our school office will be posted on our building website http://kendall.ipsd.org and our listserv. You will also receive Connect Ed phone messages from me throughout the school year. Effective communication is also supported with personal contact to our school office (630-428-7100) if you have any questions or concerns. We are happy to hear from you. For your convenience, we have provided a handout in this packet to ensure efficiency in the communication process.

The start of the school day will be adjusted slightly. Elementary students will begin school at 9:15 am instead of the usual 9:05. If you are unable to make the 10 minute adjustment you will be allowed to drop off your child at 8:50 am as on other days. Supervision will be provided. "Together Making a Difference in the Lives of Our Children"

Summer 2014

Dear Kendall Families,

I hope you all have been enjoying your summer break despite Mother Nature giving us fall like

temperatures in July! Even though we still have several weeks to enjoy before school starts, I just want to sneak a few dates on your calendar to get you ready for the new school year!

Thursday, August 14th, 5-?pm in Kendall Gym - School Supply Kit Pick Up This is for those that have preordered their school supply kits at the end of last year. There

will be a few extra on hand per grade level available for purchase that night but they will be

first come, first serve.

Thursday, Aug 21st, 2: 30pm on the blacktop - Ice Cream Social Please join the PTA for an Ice Cream Social following the teacher Meet & Greet. Andy's Frozen

Custard in Bolingbrook will provide cookies and cream custard to us free of charge. For your

convenience, we have listed the ingredients in their frozen custard. We ask for your assistance

in limiting this event to current Kendall students and their younger siblings so that we can

ensure that we have enough custard for all our students.

Tuesday, September znd, 5-9pm - Kendall PT A Restaurant Night at Chipotle Chipotle is very generous with their fundraisers and gives 50% of the sales back to the

organization. Last year, your support of this fundraiser raised $600 for Kendall PTA in just one

night! Please consider stopping by Chipotle on Sept. 2nd to support Kendall students through our

PTA.

Tuesday, September 23rd, 9:15am in the MPR - Parent Welcome Back Coffee Please join the PTA for our Parent Welcome back Coffee. This will be a great opportunity to

meet other parents, our PTA Executive Board Members, plus the chance to learn about the

Kendall PTA and all it offers.

The Kendall PT A has many more things in store for the students this year and we look forward

to partnering with our parents to make it all happen! Whether you have 1 hour or many hours to

give; please consider volunteering your time and talent to the Kendall PT A.

Thank you for your continued support!

PL EAS E R EAD CAR EFULLY

Drop-Off/Pick-Up Information

Effective 14-15 School Year:

Kendall's side drop-off/pick-up will be available to all cars, regardless of subdivision.

Kendall's front drop-off/pick-up will be available to carpoolers with three or more children only and daycare transportation. Carpoolers and daycare will need to make a left turn out of the front circle. No right turns are allowed. Our drop-off/pick-up lines work with everyone's cooperation. Please remember to:

• Obey signage. • Remain in your cars. • Keep the line moving. • Both circle drives have two ways to approach. Please give one, take one when entering. • Obey no parking signs on Pradel Dr. and Meadow Lake Dr. By doing so prevents safety

concerns for students. • Staff parking lot drop off and pick up is prohibited. It is unsafe for children to cross through

moving vehicles in our pick up lines.

Other Related Drop-Off/Pick-Up Reminders

• Place a sign in the passenger car window indicating the first and last names of students being picked up.

• Make sure that your children can open their own doors, buckle their own seat belts, and have backpacks, umbrellas, etc. ready to go.

• Give one, take one as you enter the circle drive. • Use only the area between the two portable white signs for drop-off/pick-up. Pull up as far

as possible, and watch for staff members to direct this process. • Pull around and wait in front of the loading zone if your children are not ready for pick up. • Reinforce with your children that their "job" outside is to watch for your car. • Remain in your vehicles. • Be patient.

Waving and crossing children across Meadow Lake Drive and Pradel Drive is

not allowed. Please follow the guidelines put in place to ensure student safety.

Utilize our City of Naperville designated cross walk areas or pick-up lines

where there is staff supervision.

FOOD AT SCHOOL POLICIES

The responsibility to keep every child safe and healthy at school is imperative. The following policies have been developed with the assistance of an advisory committee made up of staff members and parents. Please keep in mind the following when reviewing them:

• In recent years there has been an increase of students with serious, even life-threatening allergies.

• Childhood obesity poses a significant concern across our nation.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Nutrition Snacks

Educational research suggests that students require nutrition at regular intervals throughout the day. In addition to a healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner, students are encouraged to eat a daily nutrition snack at a time designated by the classroom teacher. This opportunity to "feed the brain" is voluntary but strongly encouraged. Only healthy snacks are permitted. Dessert-type snacks will not be allowed. Many of our classrooms are designated peanut free. A note is sent home identifying those classes by our school nurse.

Food/Treats at School

To ensure the safety of all students, any food brought into classrooms by parents or staff members must have prior approval from the principal and nurse. Five day notice will be necessary for the review of nutritional information to secure this approval.

Food items or treats will not be permitted during presentations by parents in the classroom.

Special room events are sponsored by the PTA in conjunction with Fall and Valentine's Day. Crafts made from food products, candy in valentines, and/or take home treats will not be permitted.

Birthday Celebrations

Birthdays, including half-birthdays for those whose bi1ihdays do not occur while school is in session, are recognized during morning am1ouncements and include a trip to the office for a birthday pencil. A classroom gift such as a game for indoor recess or special book is a welcomed salute to the birthday child. Treats and balloons are not allowed.

WHERETO GO IF YOU HA VE A CONCERN

Generally speaking1 questions or concerns should first be discussed with the staff member

who is closest to the situation. It is always best to follow the chain of command to ensure

that all parties involved are properly informed of the situation. Parents should expect a response from the staff person listed, or his or her designee, within one business day to

discuss their concern.
