How to build your SOA platform
• An ESB is often a good way to start» Low-end “keep it simple” versus high-end “I want everything”
» Distributed versus hub-and-spoke topologies
• Tools for composite applications» Portals, IDEs, integration tools (including ESBs), BPM, rich
clients
» Integrated tool sets for building and integrating composite applications
• Security, management, acceleration» Appliances can be a quick way to start — pushing down to the
network
» Broader integrated solutions will ultimately prevail

ESB market: still hot, moving to mainstream
• Most major platform vendors have entered
• Leaders entering adjacent SOA infrastructure areas

Best practices
• ESB is a good “first” SOA infrastructure — but not always the best way to start
• Expect ESB diversity in large companies ― federation still a challenge
• Security often a best-of-breed add-on to SOA infrastructure
• Not too early to begin to address management, governance — but recognize sufficient maturity required to benefit

Recommendations
• Recognize your organizational profile
• “Keep it simple” best for project level commitments
• “I want everything” best for enterprise deal ― when you’re ready
• SOA platforms best for more new development, some integration
• SOA integration platforms best for maximum heterogeneity
