SIGHTS AROUND SODANKYLÄ:In Sodankylä, you can expe-rience the homely flavours, customs and atmospheres of the heart of Lapland. Here, you’ll find unique artisans selling their wares, a shopping centre, quaint places to visit and a summer film festival.

1 THE OLD CHURCHThe old church of Sodankylä is Finland’s best-preserved and untouched wooden church. This church was built from timber in 1689, commis-sioned by Charles XI, who granted 900 copper dollars to the building project. The planked bar-rel vault dates back to 1703. On the inside as well as outside, the bare wooden surfaces add to the old and stark atmosphere of the church. The altar painting of the Holy Communion was painted by the Stockholm artist Petter Bergström in 1730. Open Open from 6.6.2016 to 8.8.2016. Mon–Sun 9 am–6 pm. 2 THE OLD CHURCHThe main church of Sodankylä was built in 1859, and it was built out of locally-sourced stone. The altarpiece of ”Christ the comforter” was painted by Artturi Heickel in 1912. The church serves as the principal church of the Sodankylä congrega-tion. Services take place on Sundays at 10 am all year round.Open from 6.6.2016 to 8.8.2016. 3 LOCAL HERITAGE MUSEUMBuilt in 1906, the main building of the SodankyläLocal Heritage Museum is a Kuukkeli house from the village of Riesto, in the area of the Lokka reservoir, from where it was moved to the muse-um site by voluntary labour in the 1960s. The mu-seum site also includes numerous other build-ings from traditional Sodankylä industry, such as a workshop, an Arctic house, a calving hut, a summer house, barns and part of a reindeer fence, or churn. 4 MUSEUM-GALLERY ALARIESTOThe Andreas Alariesto Museum-Gallery has a permanent exhibition of the Sompio-born paint-er, Andreas Alariesto’s life’s work and produc-tion. Andreas Alariesto (1900-1989) was one of Finland’s best primitive painters. For him, the starting points of art were the rich folk traditions of his homeland, from its history and mythol-ogy, and from his own lifetime. Having grown up in both Lappish and Finnish culture, he had a unique perspective of Lappish cultural tradi-tions. In addition to exhibitions in his homeland, Alariesto’s art has been exhibited in Germany, Russia, Sweden, Belgium, Luxemburg, Hungary and France. Open Mon–Fri 9 am–4 pm. Other times on request. 5 TAIGAKORU JEWELLERYGoldsmith/art engraver Seppo Penttinen has worked in Sodankylä since 1983. The main fo-cus is on the goldsmith’s own jewellery series, of which there are now seven. The beautiful Lappish nature is the common theme in the jew-ellery series. The company also makes custom jewellery, which can be made to the specifica-tions of the customer. 8 LUOSTO’S INFORMATION POINT TO PYHÄ-LUOSTO NATIONAL PARKThe Luosto information point introduces Pyhä-Luosto National Park in the form of a small and experiential exhibition. 9 AHVENLAMPI, LUOSTOAhvenlampi is situated by Luosto Fell, near the Luosto tourist resort. There is a 2.8 km trail around the edge of Ahvenlampi, which is man-ageable even for kids. Along the trail there are also camp fire huts, so remember to take your picnic things!

SIGHTS AROUNDPYHÄ-LUOSTO:

Pyhä-Luosto is a diverse area spread over two fell-districts. Visitors to Pyhä-Luosto can enjoy the landscapes of the national park around Finland’s southern-most chain of fells, and Europe’s only operating amethyst mine that is open to the public. Biking is a great way to explore the resort. At the end of summer 2016, there will be new biking trails approx. 100 km in Pyhä-Luosto. More information from the area’s information points.

10 THE AMETHYST MINE, LUOSTOEurope’s only active amethyst mine can be found on the top of Pyhä-Luosto’s Lampivaara fell. You can choose from a number of tours, e.g. a 5 km trek leading through forests and across fells or choose a trail through a swamp and walk on logs. Once you reach the top of the fell you can listen to the mysterious story of the ame-thyst. 11 OUTINEN RIDING CENTREProgrammes include traditional riding camps for children and youth, and a ”Country Calling Card” for families, couples or single travellers. Come and see horses in the pastures, grab a pitchfork, ride a horse or just relax. If you want, you can participate in the farm work and learn about the yearly cycle of a reindeer and horse farm. 12 THE CHAPEL OF THE NORTHERN LIGHTS, PYHÄThe Chapel of the Northern Lights at Pyhä Fell is Lapland’s first tourist church. The chapel was de-signed by architect Kari Ojala and Bishop Olavi Rimpiläinen consecrated it in 1986. The Chapel of the Northern Lights is also known for being a good concert venue. 13 AITTAKURU GORGE, PYHÄRugged Aittakuru is hidden in between the slopes of Pyhä Fell and opens up to a stunning rocky scene. Aittakuru is by road 9621 between Pyhä and Luosto. The car park is about 2.2 km from the Pyhä business centre, on the right-hand side of the road. It is under half a kilo-metre’s walk to the gorge.Aittakuru is a uniquely beautiful natural amphi-theatre, where Finnish, Lappish and internation-al music, both modern and traditional, resounds on summer evenings. The acoustics of the gorge are great for small concerts as well as larger events. Aittakuru is also the venue for the Pyhä Unplugged and Luosto Classic events.

15 ISOKURU GORGE, PYHÄIsokuru is Finland’s deepest gorge. It is situated on Pyhä Fell, between the Kultakero and Ukon-hattu peaks and has a depth of 200 metres. The very popular duckboard trail at the foot of the gorge runs from Pyhänkasteenlampi to Py-hänkasteenputous. The origins of the gorge and the geology of the area is explained on informa-tion boards along the trail. At the end of Isonkuru Gorge there is a hut, a camp fire spot and a disa-bled-access toilet.

16 PYHÄ SCENIC CHAIR LIFTChair lift takes you to the top of Kultakero, to see the magnificent scenery. We recommend to stop at Restaurant Tsokka on the top to taste their delicious waffles. SIGHTS AROUND PELKOSENNIEMI:Pelkosenniemi is a small municipality, but it has a very rich cultural history. In Pelkosenniemi you can experience the unique nature of wetlands, fells and rivers.

18 SUVANTO VILLAGESituated near Pelkosenniemi, Suvanto is one of the rare villages in Lapland, which were not burned down by the Germans in the Lapland War, and it’s culturally and historically precious buildings are protected by the National Board of Antiquities and Historical Monuments. When visiting Suvanto you should look in at the cafe-art gallery Säpikäs. 19 THE ANDY MCCOY STATUE The statue of Antti Hulkko, a.k.a. Andy McCoy, stands proudly in the centre of Pelkosenniemi Parish Village. The 3.6 metre tall monument was carved out of pine heartwood by McCoy’s uncle, Matti Hulkko, and was unveiled on 25th of July 2009. Andy McCoy rose to fame as the guitarist of Hanoi Rocks.

24 KEMIJÄRVI CHURCH, THE OLD CLOCK TOWER, AND PINE-FLOGGING SPOTKemijärvi’s forth church designed by Bertel Liljeqvist was built in 1951 on the site of a church which had been burned down in the war. The altarpiece was painted by Aale Hakala and Uuno Särkelä, and the bark paintings, are by Antti Salmenlinna. 26 KEMIJÄRVI REGIONAL MUSEUM Come and learn about the lives of peasants and traditional trades from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition to the impres-sive main building, the museum has many other buildings typical of the era. The monument of Hannes Gebhard, the pioneer of the Finnish co-operative movement, is located close-by, on the same spot his birth home was located. 30 KOTAVAARA OBSERVATION TOWER Located in the village of Puikkola, the Kotavaara Observation Tower offers breathtaking views of the distant fells: Pyhä-Luosto in the north and the Suomu fell in the east. An observer can view beautiful hills and rural landscapes as far as the eye can see – not to mention the entire city of Kemijärvi. A three-story tower just a short walk away is ideal for activities such as birdwatching. There is also a lean-to shelter and a campfire site close to the tower.
