INTRODUCTION

This handbook was prepared to clarify the KEMET Capacitor part numbering system. It contains breakdowns of KEMETpart numbers and MILITARY numbers. Practice exercises follow each section and reinforce the information covered.

We hope you can take the time to work through this book from front to back. However, we realize that “spare” time issomething we all wish we had more of! We strongly recommend that you try to study this book systematically, since a workingknowledge of KEMET part numbers will make your job much easier.

TANTALUM

Mastering the KEMET part number is basically a matter of learning each position of the part number. Diagrams of each parttype appear in the General Catalog at the beginning of each series. Here we will discuss Tantalum and Ceramic part numbers,referring to each digit in the part number as a numbered position.

I. KEMET TANTALUM PART NUMBER

Position

1. T for tantalum

2, 3, 4. Series is a three digit number which is the name of a part with certain specifications. In the tantalum partnumber, key numbers in the same position in each series have similar specifications.

For example:

T1XX or T2XX indicates hermetically sealedT2XX or T2XX indicates high reliabilityT3XXor T2XX indicates epoxy encapsulatedT4XXor T2XX indicates tantalum chip

Originally the tantalum part number was designed with the 4th position indicating polar if the number waseven, for example T110, T212, T322, T370; and non-polar if the number was odd, T111, T213. However,there are exceptions; for example T363, T369 are polar.

5. Case Size. Ranges from A to M. The smallest case for each series is A and the size of the part increases asthe letter of the alphabet progresses. Special case sizes are sometimes manufactured. If you have a partnumber with a letter other than the ones specified in the catalog, contact the Product Manager.

6, 7, 8. Capacitance in picofarad code. Capacitance is the ability of a capacitor to regulate energy by storage and/orrelease of electrons in a specific manner. Capacitance for KEMET parts is measured in picofarads (pf) andmicrofarads (mf). 1,000,000pf = 1mf. If the capacitance expressed in picofarads is a large number, we generallyconvert it to microfarads for convenience.

For example:

Converting picofarads to microfarads:

6,800,000pf =6,800,0006,800,000pf = 1,000,000 = 6.8mf (decimal moves 6 places to left)

47,000pf = 1,047,00047,000pf = 1,000,000 = .047mf (decimal moves 6 places to left)

150,000,000pf =150,000,000150,000,000pf =151,000,000 = 150mf (decimal moves 6 places to left)

Converting microfarads to picofarads:

330mf = 330 x 1,000,000 = 330,000,000pf (decimal moves 6 places to right)

.001mf = .001 x 1,000,000 = 1,000pf (decimal moves 6 places to right)

10mf = 10 x 1,000,000 = 10,000,000pf (decimal moves 6 places to right)

A shortcut is simply to move the decimal 6 places to the left when converting from picofarads to microfaradsand 6 places to right when converting from microfarads to picofarads.

The tantalum part number has only 3 positions for capacitance, therefore, we express capacitance in picofaradcode. The first two numbers are significant; the third is the number of zeros following.

105pf code — 10 and 5 zeros following = 1,000,000pf or 1.0mf

226pf code — 22 and 6 zeros following = 22,000,000pf or 22mf

183pf code — 18 and 3 zeros following = 18,000pf or .018mf

687pf code — 68 and 7 zeros following = 680,000,000pf or 680mf

As you can see, we have three ways of expressing the same capacitance.

9. Tolerance — sometimes called cap. tolerance, is a letter which codes the degree we are allowed to deviatefrom the nominal capacitance. In tantalum product, the deviation is expressed as 6 percentage.

M = 620% K = 610% J = 65% L = 140, 220% (microns only)

X — special tolerance defined by accompanying C-spec.

10, 11, 12. Voltage — three digits are used to express voltage. For example:

006 = 6 Volts, 015 = 15 Volts, 035 = 35 Volts, 060 = 60 Volts, 100 = 100 Volts.

13. Failure Rate of Level — A letter indicates the life reliability level determined by statistical analysis of failureswhich occur during Burn-in (Life Test) or that the life reliability level does not apply (A = non-applicable).

Established Reliability(39003/H)

Specified as L, M, P, R or SReliability based on original qualification andperiodic maintenance samples from many prod-uction batches combined to form inspection lots.Failure rates verified by Certification of Compli-ance and supported by a semi-annual data report.

Graded Reliability(39003/H)

Specified as B, C, or DReliability based on life testing performed athigher-than-rated voltages on a homogeneousproduction batch. Failure rate verified with calcu-lated test data.

14. Lead Material — S is used for standard material. Consult the catalog for other letters used for special leadmaterial.

II. MILITARY TANTALUM

In addition to the KEMET part number, you will work with military dash numbers and part numbers. You will need to con-vert these MIL numbers to the KEMET part numbers for delivery requests and order entry.

NOTE: MIL-C39003/09 style CSR21 was designed with a table of dash numbers as the only MIL part number. Thereforea number such as CSR21G106KP is non-existent. If your copy of the General Catalog does not have a table of dashnumbers for MIL-C-39003/09 or MIL cross reference for MIL-C-49137/1, you may obtain one by request.

B. CONVERTING MIL-C-39003 to KEMET TANTALUM PART NUMBER

EXAMPLES: 39003/01-2880EXAMPLES: 39003/01-5266

STEPS

1. Use the “Capacitor Reference and Index” on page one of the General Catalog to locate the section you will needto convert to KEMET part number. To convert our example, turn to the section for 39003/01, which you will find isT110/T212.

2. The General Catalog has two tables of dash numbers (First the exponential dash numbers and second the gradedreliability dash numbers) between the KEMET commercial part number on the left and the KEMET military partnumber in the column to the far right. Note recent revisions of the General Catalog places 39003/06 (T-CSR33) and39003/09 (T262-CSR21) in individual sections with the KEMET MIL number on the left and the two tables of dashnumbers to the right.

3. Observe. Several revisions of the MIL-Spec. have caused the table to lose its numerical sequence. For example,39003/01 exponential dash numbers beginning with 5 for 5% tolerance parts and 100 volt, C case sizes have been addedto the table. However, you can use the numerical sequence that remains, to locate the 4 digit dash number in the table.

M level dash numbers are lower numbers than PP level dash numbers are lower numbers than RR level dash numbers are lower numbers than S

4. By scanning across the columns of dash numbers at the beginning of the table you can determine the failure rate of thepart you are converting. For example, the 39003/01 table begins with:

39003/01-2880 is greater than 2721 (R level) but less than 2961 (S level), therefore 2880 is R level

39003/01-5266 is greater than 5201 (P level) but less than 5401 (R level), therefore 5266 is P level

5. Turn through the tables scanning the top of each page until the number in the appropriate failure rate column is closeto the dash number you are converting. Then go down the column until you find the number.

6. Complete the KEMET military part number to the far right by inserting the failure rate in position 13 that appears atthe top of the column:

for 39003/01-2880, the KEMET Military Number is T212B105K075RS

for 39003/01-5266, the KEMET Military Number is T212A104J050PS

NOTE: In earlier revision of the General Catalog for 39003/03 and 39003/06, you will also have to insert in position3 of the KEMET number, the digit:

“4” for 39003/03 or“5” for 39003/06

After practice you will not find it necessary or preferable to follow this procedure step by step. Instead, start onany page, scan across the columns of dash numbers and turn forward or backward in the table until you locate thedash number.

*Note: This Military Part Numbering System is obsolete in accordance with current specifications. The correct currentdesignation for a CSR part number is the MIL Specification Number followed by Specification (slash) SheetNumber and Dash Number, i.e. 39003/01-2270. However, this part numbering system is still widely used.

D. CONVERTING CS AND CSR NUMBERS TO KEMET PART NUMBER

STEPS

1. Use the “Capacitor Reference and Index” on page one of the General Catalog to locate the section you will need toconvert to KEMET part number. To convert our example, turn to the section for CS13/CSR13 which you will find isT110/T212.

2. Under T110/T212, you will see that parts are listed in order by voltage. Position 6 in the CS/CSR part number is voltage.In our example, the voltage is “G” or 50 volts. Locate the section of T110/T212 labeled 50 volts. (If you are not yetfamiliar with the voltage code, you will find it helpful to jot the appropriate letter next to the voltage rating at 858 Cin the heading of each voltage section in the catalog.)

3. From our table of Tantalum MIL Specs., you know CS13 converts to T110 series and CSR13 converts to T212 series.The catalog lists the KEMET T110 part number on the left side of the page and the T212 KEMET military part numberin the column on the far right of the page.

4. Using the appropriate column, locate the part with the same picofarad code as the CS/CSR number you are converting.(Picofarad code is position 7, 8, and 9 in the CS/CSR number and 6, 7, and 8 in the KEMET part number. In our example,it is “475”.) Notice there are three part numbers that have “475” pf codes.

5. Select the part with the same tolerance as the part you are converting; position 10 in CS/CSR number, position 9 in theKEMET part number. In our example, it is “K”. This completes the conversion of the CS number.

CS13BG475K = T110B475K050AS

6. To complete the KEMET part number for CSR, insert the failure rate; position 11 in the CSR number, position 13 forthe KEMET part number. In our example, it is “P”.

CSR13G475KP = T212B475K050PS

Caution: It is possible to create a CSR number that is not a valid MIL-C-39003 number.

For example: CSR13F105KP

When you reach step 4 in converting this example to the KEMET part number, you will find no T212 part numberwith a 35 volt rating and a 105 pf code. Therefore, it is not a valid MIL-C-39003 number.

If you are familiar with the KEMET tantalum part number, then you will find it easy to apply that knowledge to the ceramicpart number.

I. KEMET MOLDED CERAMIC PART NUMBER

1. C is for ceramic.

2, 3, 4. Size Code — In tantalum product, each series has several case sizes. For example: T110, A, B, C, D. InKEMET ceramic product, the series is the size.

5. Specification — In KEMET tantalum product, the series is also a specification. T110, T120, T322 arecommercial; T212, T242, T323 are military. In KEMET ceramic products, we use a letter to specify:

Exception to this occurs if the capacitance is below 10pf. To show the decimal goes between the two significantnumbers, we use the number 9 as the third number.

C. CONVERTING CDR’s to KEMET PART NUMBER

EXAMPLE: CDR01BX121BKSM

STEPS

1. Refer to the “Capacitor Reference and Index” on page one of the General Catalog to locate the section you will needto convert CDR’s to the KEMET part number.

2. Observe. To conserve space, the table of CDR part numbers lists each capacitance value one time, even though thecapacitance value may be available in more than one dielectric and/or tolerance. The CDR number and the KEMETnumber will indicate when more than one tolerance or dielectric characteristic is available in the numbered legendexplained at the bottom of the page.

3. Locate the CDR number you are converting in the table. In our example, locate CDR01B(1)121B(3)S(4). To the right,you will see the KEMET number C0805P121(3)1(2)(4)H. Notice style CDR01 through CDR06 are specification “P”while CDR31 through CDR35 are specification “N.”

4. Complete the corresponding KEMET part number of inserting the appropriate letter for dielectric characteristic,tolerance, and failure rate.

In our example, insert: “K” — Tolerance, “X” — Dielectric, “M” — Failure Rate.

GENERAL NOTES AND SUGGESTIONS

Familiarize yourself with the basic physical shape and construction of each series. Be able to recognize whether a series is (1)axial or radial and (2) molded, hermetically sealed, dipped, micron, D.I.P., or a chip. Refer to the tables that follow as a guide.

Components of a part number must be compatible with each other. Learn to recognize obvious inconsistency in a part number.

For example:

T212A685K006AS This series must have failure rate L, M, P, R, S (established reliability) or C, B, D (graded reliability).

C062G103K5X5CA G Specification = MIL-C-20 which is a “G” dielectric only.

C0805P101K1GAH P Specification = MIL-C-555681 which must have failure rate M, P, R or S.

T111A105K050AS Capacitance value for hermetically sealed non-polar tantalums (T111, T213, T211), is half thecapacitance value of the two polar tantalums joined to make the non-polar hermetically sealed series,but 105 is a polar cap. value.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT CAPACITANCE

You may see microfarad and picofarad abbreviated in a variety of ways.

For example: microfarad as mf, mF, UF, mf or MFFor example: picofarad as pf, pF or PF

When working with capacitance, it is necessary for you to observe how it is expressed. Ask yourself, is it expressed asmicrofarads, picofarads or picofarad code? It makes a difference.

For example: 330 could mean 300mf or 337pf code

For example: 330 could mean 330pf or 331pf code

For example: 330 could mean 330pf code or 33pf

Catalogs use the most clear and brief means of expressing capacitance which may be microfarads, picofarads or both.

Even though we discuss capacitance in microfarads for Tantalum and some Ceramic values, the KEMET part number alwaysexpresses capacitance in picofarad code with the initial 2 or 3 digits expressing actual values and the last digit expressing thenumber of zeros following (or the position for the decimal point).
