The Math Department would like to welcome students back and wish them all the best during the 2013/14 school year!

SOCIAL STUDIESSOCIAL STUDIESSOCIAL STUDIESSOCIAL STUDIES The Social Studies Department would like to welcome all new and returning students for this coming year. The Department will be hosting teacher-candidates from the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg this fall. The expectation for students who will be having a teacher candidate in their room will be the same as it is for their regular teacher. Students are reminded to keep up to date with their work and to continue to attend all their classes. The Department will also be conducting a number of field trips throughout the year in several courses. These field trips will help to broaden the classroom experience by allowing students to expand their learning in their own communities. Grade nine Social Studies classes will visit the Provincial Legislature and grade twelve Law classes will sit through a trial at the Provincial Court House. Furthermore, some of the grade eleven Canadian History classes will participate in a historic walking tour of downtown Winnipeg and Saint Boniface. We are looking forward to another year with the students and parents at our great school! Chris Young Social Studies Department

Polar Bears and Permafrost at the edge of the ArcticPolar Bears and Permafrost at the edge of the ArcticPolar Bears and Permafrost at the edge of the ArcticPolar Bears and Permafrost at the edge of the Arctic A number of Kelvin students, together with Chemistry teacher, Donna Labun, participated in a two week science trip to Churchill and Wapusk National Park. They joined Dr. Ryan Brooks from the University of Saskatchewan and Dr. Jim Roth from the University of Manitoba and a group of students from Baltimore, Maryland and Seattle, Washington for a student-led climate change field research trip in the greater Wapusk ecosystem. The first few days were spent at the Churchill Northern Studies Center. From there the group was transported by helicopter to a small research camp in Wapusk National Park. On the tundra, the students tested the depth of the active layer by probing down to the permafrost in both bog and fen environments. This depth was then linked to moisture content, soil pH and vegetation dynamics. The goal is to monitor this data over many years and contribute to the overall understanding of the changes that are taking place on the tundra in the subarctic. The students also helped Dr. Jim Roth survey the arctic fox dens in the area. Many of the dens were occupied by little pups and students were able to watch the pups playing and tumbling with each other. The scientists shared about their research and the students learned about topics such as the creation of beach ridges through isostatic rebound, the effect of the decrease in bog areas on caribou survival in the arctic winter, how to monitor fox populations and the intricacies of food webs, and the effect of the increase in snow goose population on the tundra. Some of the highlights of the trip were: watching the northern lights, feeling the thud of the probe on the permafrost, eating cloudberries, snorkeling with beluga whales, and seeing caribou, polar bears, and arctic foxes. Here are a few student quotes describing the science aspect of the trip: “This trip really changed the way that I view science. I think I now realize that the whole point of science is to better understand, protect, and wonder at the incredible world around us.” “One of the most memorable things in the whole trip was the first night we saw the northern lights. Green curtains of light hung in the sky, looking like the extremities of another world. The way they shimmered and slithered across the heavens, beckoning us, reaching down to us as they navigated the great span of sky overhead was truly one of the most enrapturing things I have ever seen.” “The trip made me realize that the more you learn and understand about a place—about anything, really—the more there is to love about it. This trip has inspired me to learn more about the environment in which I live and the ecosystems that surround me.” Students also had the opportunity to meet with representatives from the region’s indigenous cultures. A particularly powerful event was listening to Caroline, a Sayisi Dene woman, describe the devastating relocation of her people to Churchill in 1956. It was inspiring to hear about the long and difficult path toward healing, both for her personally and for her people. The trip was a life-changing learning experience which is summed up in the words of one of the students: “Not only do I feel that I have gained an incredible insight into science and Arctic ecology, I feel that I have also gained an insight into the cultures and political issues of the region, a greater appreciation for my surroundings, and friendships that will last forever.” Listen for announcements to find out about next year’s trip or see Ms. Labun in room 18 for details.

Consulting reference works: consulting dictionaries and verb conjugation books such as the Bescherelle constitutes having recourse to an accredited source. Students must evaluateevaluateevaluateevaluate the options with which they are presented and must, then, choose the correct word for their context.

A translation engine such as Babelfish or the language tools on Google produce ready made answers which require no evaluation, no intellectual participation on the part of the student or even any learning.

It is, in a way, asking “someone” to do the work for the student just as if he or she had asked a friend or parent to do it. The student, is, therefore, submitting work that is not his or her own and thus, it becomes plagiarism and unacceptable.

EDITING HOMEWORK We would like to point out a couple of very useful websites for helping students edit their work in French: http://bonpatron.com and reverse.net-dictionaries. These sites allow students to put their work through a grammar and spell check in French. The editor will point out the error and explain the grammatical concept related to it. The lexilogos.com dictionary is also useful.

OCTOBER IS CANADIAN LIBRARY MONTH!OCTOBER IS CANADIAN LIBRARY MONTH!OCTOBER IS CANADIAN LIBRARY MONTH!OCTOBER IS CANADIAN LIBRARY MONTH! People! Ideas! Communities! Information! Canada’s libraries foster connections between people, ideas, communities, and information. In October, these connections will be celebrated during Canadian Library Month. The theme, Libraries Connect/Bibliothèques branchées, highlights how libraries enable people to connect with others, foster the development of ideas, and promote the growth of strong communities. For generations, libraries and librarians have worked at the grass roots level, providing access to current information, bringing forward new programs and ideas to share, leading and supporting communities as they grow. While always evolving to meet the needs of Canadians, engaging in new technologies like eBooks, Facebook, Twitter, and providing access to varieties of formats for different learning styles, etc., libraries continue to be at the centre of their communities, a place where people learn, engage and connect with each other.1 With more than 20,000 books (both fiction and non-fiction), subscriptions to several periodicals and newspapers, and an impressive collection of multimedia items, Kelvin High School’s Library supports the teaching needs of staff and the curricular needs of an increasingly diverse student population. The Library’s entire collection, as well as the magazine article database, EBSCOhost, is searchable on line, providing a local “on-ramp” to the Information Highway. Make a virtual visit to Kelvin’s Library at https://www.winnipegsd.ca/schools/Kelvin/StudentResources/khslibrary/Pages/default.aspx. Nearly 97% of all Canadians live in a community served by a public library;2 Kelvin is within walking distance of two Winnipeg Public Library branches: the Cornish Library (one of two historic Carnegie Libraries in Winnipeg), located just over the Maryland Bridge, and the River Heights Branch, adjacent to Brock Corydon School, on Corydon. Visit the Winnipeg Public Library at http://wpl.city.winnipeg.mb.ca/library. 1Canadian Library Month Backgrounder 2012, Canadian Library Association. 2Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and OCLC Canada, Libraries: How They Stack Up. 2004

In celebration of both Manitoba School Library Day and National School Library Day, Kelvin High School will be joining schools across the country to “Drop Everything and Read” on Monday, October 28, 2013. Take up the D.E.A.R Challenge!

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL NEWSPARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL NEWSPARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL NEWSPARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL NEWS Dear Parents/Guardians: CARE TO PARTICIPATE?CARE TO PARTICIPATE?CARE TO PARTICIPATE?CARE TO PARTICIPATE? On behalf of Kelvin High School’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC), I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to PAC meetings for the 2013 – 2014 school year. PAC is a wonderful way to network with other parents and to find out what is happening at the school. From time to time, our meetings include a presentation on a topic of interest such as internet safety, the role of the guidance department, the phys ed curriculum, etc. Each meeting includes a report from the Administration to help keep us informed of what is happening in the school and why some administrative decisions are made. The Student Council also attends and reports on activities of the Council. PAC meetings will be held on the following dates - the 2nd Thursday of the month: October 15, 2013 November 14, 2013 December 12, 2013 January 9, 2014 February 13, 2014 March 13, 2014 April 10, 2014 May 8, 2014 We encourage your attendance and participation. You can safely come to check us out without fear of being pressured into chairing the meetings or taking minutes – we have volunteers ready to do these tasks! Please join us in the Library (main floor, just past the office) at 7:00 p.m. on October 15th. Meetings are usually finished shortly after 8:00 p.m. CARE TO DONATE?CARE TO DONATE?CARE TO DONATE?CARE TO DONATE? Each spring, PAC provides a “Staff Appreciation Breakfast” to the approximately 120 staff at Kelvin. In the past, a small number of parents have born the cost of this event. We would like to encourage each “Kelvin Family” to donate $1 to cover the costs of this and other expenses during the year. (These could include helping the Student Council out with special expenses.) Please consider this request and make a donation at the Parent-Teacher meetings on November 21 (evening) or 22 (daytime). PAC members will be available to take your donations. If you won’t be attending this event at the school, please drop your donation off at the office. Many thanks!

Every student receives a stocking, presents, books and a stuffed animal. The day embodies the spirit of giving, the spirit of sharing, the spirit of volunteerism. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the privileges that we so often take for granted.

Students work countless hours to make this day happen and their commitment to this undertaking is truly inspiring. It is so easy to make a difference in the lives of others if only for a few hours. All we need to do is care enough to get involved and help.

This years breakfast will be held on Friday, December 13th and we are inviting (and counting on) the entire Kelvin community to step up and help make a difference.

In order to make this day a special one we need the following: Cash donations for the purchase of a new toy for each child Gently used books Gently used stuffed animals

It takes 300300300300 toys, 1000100010001000 books, 220220220220 stockings, 1,2001,2001,2001,200 pancakes, 600600600600 sausages, 300300300300 pairs of hands, countless hours and so much more to make the day happen.

We ask you to search your basements, search your wallets and search your hearts to help make this day a special one.

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) states that when a student reaches the age of 18 they are an adult and schools are unable to share information with

parents without the written consent of the student. We believe that in the majority of situations parents would like to continue to receive information about their children from the school. Forms to give consent are available in the guidance office and need to be filled out after the

student has reached the age of majority.

The practice of dropping off and picking up students in the parking lot before and after school is quite disruptive to the staff as well as “an accident waiting to happen.” Please be reminded that the school’s parking lot is specifically assigned to, and paid for by, school staff only and therefore, we are requesting that you refrain from using it as a drive-thru by making arrangements to drop off or meet your son/daughter on one of the surrounding streets.

Due to increased concerns with students having adverse reactions to scented products, Kelvin High School is taking steps to becoming a scent free school. We are asking for the support of students, staff and parents. We are asking all those attending Kelvin to avoid wearing scented products such as perfume, men's cologne, scented hairspray or lotions, strong smelling soaps, etc. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Kelvin High School Code of ConductKelvin High School Code of ConductKelvin High School Code of ConductKelvin High School Code of Conduct

Kelvin High School has adopted a “Clipper Code of Conduct for Student Athletes”. Kelvin believes that participating in athletics is a privilege. Student athletes are ambassadors of our school. The image presented by our student athletes will be of a positive nature, enhancing the reputation of Kelvin inside and outside the community. To achieve this the “Code of Conduct” will be a guide for our student athletes. The code will reflect personal behaviour, attitude, courtesy, academics, sportsmanship and general commitment. Student athletes who do not adhere to these considerations will be referred to an Athletic Review Committee and appropriate action will be taken to rectify the situation.
