Keith L. Moore

Professor Emeritus, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Toronto. Distinguishedembryologist and the author of several medical textbooks, including Clinically Oriented Anatomy (3rd Edition)and The Developing Human (5th Edition, with T.V.N. Persaud).

Investigations in to the 'alaqa or leech-like stage.

Dr. Moore was a former President of theCanadian Association of Anatomists, and ofthe American Association of ClinicalAnatomists. He was honoured by the CanadianAssociation of Anatomists with the prestigiousJ.C.B. Grant Award and in 1994 he received theHonoured Member Award of the AmericanAssociation of Clinical Anatomists "foroutstanding contributions to the field ofclinical anatomy."

"For the past three years, I haveworked with the EmbryologyCommittee of King cAbdulazizUniversity in Jeddah, SaudiArabia, helping them to interpretthe many statements in theQur'an and Sunnah referring tohuman reproduction andprenatal development. At first Iwas astonished by the accuracy ofthe statements that were

recorded in the 7th century AD,before the science of embryologywas established. Although I wasaware of the glorious history ofMuslim scientists in the 10thcentury AD, and some of theircontributions to Medicine, I knewnothing about the religious factsand beliefs contained in theQur'an and Sunnah."[2]

At a conference in Cairo he presented aresearch paper and stated:

"It has been a great pleasure forme to help clarify statements inthe Qur'an about humandevelopment. It is clear to me thatthese statements must have cometo Muhammad from God, orAllah, because most of thisknowledge was not discovereduntil many centuries later. Thisproves to me that Muhammadmust have been a messenger ofGod, or Allah." [1]

Professor Moore also stated that:

"...Because the staging of humanembryos is complex, owing to thecontinuous process of changeduring development, it isproposed that a new system ofclassification could be developedusing the terms mentioned in theQur'an and Sunnah. Theproposed system is simple, comprehensive, and conformswith present embryologicalknowledge.

"The intensive studies of theQur'an and Hadith in the last fouryears have revealed a system ofclassifying human embryos that

is amazing since it was recordedin the seventh century A.D... thedescriptions in the Qur'an cannotbe based on scientific knowledgein the seventh century..."[1]

E. Marshall Johnson

Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology, and Director of the DanielBaugh Institute, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Author of over 200 publications. Former President of theTeratology Society among other accomplishments.Professor Johnson began to take an interest in thescientific signs in the Qur'an at the 7th Saudi MedicalConference (1982), when a special committee was formedto investigate scientific signs in the Qur'an and Hadith. Atfirst, Professor Johnson refused to accept the existence ofsuch verses in the Qur'an and Hadith. But after adicussuion with Sheikh Zindani he took an interest andconcentrated his research on the internal as well asexternal development of the fetus.

"...in summary, the Qur'an describes notonly the development of external form, but emphasises also the internal stages, the stages inside the embryo, of itscreation and development, emphasisingmajor events recognised by contemporaryscience."

"As a scientist, I can only deal with thingswhich I can specifically see. I canunderstand embryology anddevelopmental biology. I can understandthe words that are translated to me fromthe Qur'an. As I gave the example before,if I were to transpose myself into that era,

knowing what I do today and describingthings, I could not describe the things thatwere described...

I see no evidence to refute the conceptthat this individual Muhammad had to bedeveloping this information from someplace... so I see nothing here in conflictwith the concept that divine interventionwas involved in what he was able towrite..." [1]

T.V.N. Persaud

Professor of Anatomy, and Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg,Manitoba, Canada.

Author and editor of over 20 books, and haspublished over 181 scientific papers. Co-authorof The Developing Human (5th Edition, with Keith L.Moore). He received the J.C.B. Grant Award in1991. Professor Peraud presented severalresearch papers.

"It seems to me that Muhammadwas a very ordinary man, hecouldn't read, didn't know how towrite, in fact he was an illiterate...

We're talking about 1400 years ago,you have some illiterate personmaking profound statements thatare amazingly accurate, of ascientific nature...

I personally can't see how thiscould be mere chance, there are toomany accuracies and like Dr.Moore, I have no difficulty in mymind reconciling that this is adivine inspiration or revelation

which lead him to thesestatements." [1]

Joe Leigh Simpson

Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Baylor College of Medicine,Houston, Texas, USA.

He is the President of the American Fertility Society. He has receivedmany awards, including the Association of Professors of Obstetricsand Gynaecology Public Recognition Award in 1992. Like manyothers, Professor Simpson was taken by surprise when he discoveredthat the Qur'an and Hadith contain verses related to his specialisedfield of study. When he met with Sheikh Abdul-Majeed A.Zindani, heinsisted on verifying the text presented to him from the Qur'an andHadith.

"... these Hadiths (sayings of Muhammad) couldnot have been obtained on the basis of thescientific knowledge that was available at thetime of the 'writer'... It follows that not only isthere no conflict between genetics and religion(Islam) but in fact religion (Islam) may guidescience by adding revelation to some of thetraditional scientific approaches... There existstatements in the Qur'an shown centuries later tobe valid which support knowledge in the Qur'anhaving been derived from God." [1]

Gerald C. Goeringer

Professor and Co-ordinator of Medical Embryology in the Department of Cell Biology, School of Medicine,Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA.

Sheikh cAbdul-Majeed A.Zindani met withProfessor Goeringer and asked him whether inthe history of embryology was there anymention of the different stages of embryonicdevelopment, or whether there existed any

Page 6: Keith L. Moore - Internet Archive...Keith L. Moore Professor Emeritus, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Toronto. Distinguished embryologist and the author of several

embryological texts at the time of the Prophet.Sheikh Zindani also asked his opinionregarding the terms the Qur'an uses to describethe different phases of fetal development. Afterseveral long discussions, he presented a studyat the 8th Saudi Medical Conference:

"...In a relatively few ayahs(Qur'anic verses) is contained arather comprehensive descriptionof human development from thetime of commingling of thegametes through organogenesis. No such distinct and completerecord of human developmentsuch as classification, terminology, and descriptionexisted previously. In most, if notall instances, this descriptionantedates by many centuries therecording of the various stages ofhuman embryonic and fetaldevelopment recorded in thetraditional scientific literature." [1]

Alfred Kroner

Professor of the Department of Geosciences, University of Mainz, Germany.

Professor Kroner is one of the world's mostfamous geologists, becoming well knownamong his colleague scientists for hiscriticisms against the theories of some of themajor scientists in his field. Sheikh cAbdul-Majeed A. Zindani met with him and presentedseveral Qur'anic verses and Hadith which hestudied and commented upon.

"Thinking where Muhammadcame from... I think it is almostimpossible that he could haveknown about things like the

common origin of the universe, because scientists have only foundout within the last few years withvery complicated and advancedtechnological methods that this isthe case."

"Somebody who did not knowsomething about nuclear physics1400 years ago could not, I think,be in a position to find out fromhis own mind for instance that theearth and the heavens had thesame origin, or many others of thequestions that we have discussedhere...

If you combine all these and youcombine all these statements thatare being made in the Qur'an interms that relate to the earth andthe formation of the earth andscience in general, you canbasically say that statementsmade there in many ways aretrue, they can now be confirmedby scientific methods, and in away, you can say that the Qur'anis a simple science text book forthe simple man. And that many ofthe statements made in there atthat time could not be proven, butthat modern scientific methodsare now in a position to provewhat Muhammad said 1400 yearsago." [1]

Yushidi Kusan

Director of the Tokyo Observatory, Tokyo, Japan.

Page 8: Keith L. Moore - Internet Archive...Keith L. Moore Professor Emeritus, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Toronto. Distinguished embryologist and the author of several

Sheikh Abdul-Majeed A. Zindani presented a number ofQur'anic verses describing the beginnings of theuniverse and of the heavens, and the relationship of theearth to the heavens. He expressed his astonishment, saying that the Qur'an describes the universe as seenfrom the highest observation point, everything is distinctand clear.

"I say, I am very much impressed byfinding true astronomical facts inQur'an, and for us modern astronomershave been studying very small piece ofthe universe. We have concentrated ourefforts for understanding of very smallpart. Because by using telescopes, wecan see only very few parts of the skywithout thinking about the wholeuniverse. So by reading Qur'an and byanswering to the questions, I think I canfind my future way for investigation ofthe universe." [1]

Professor Armstrong

Professor Armstrong works for NASA and is also Professor of Astronomy, University of Kansas, Lawrence,Kansas, USA.

Prof. Armstrong was asked a number ofquestions about Qur'anic verses dealing withhis field of specialisation. He was eventuallyasked, "You have seen and discovered foryourself the true nature of modern Astronomy bymeans of modern equipment, rockets, andsatellites developed by man. You have also seenhow the same facts were mentioned by the Qur'anfourteen centuries ago. So what is your opinion?"

"That is a difficult question whichI have been thinking about sinceour discussion here. I amimpressed at how remarkablysome of the ancient writings seemto correspond to modern and

Page 9: Keith L. Moore - Internet Archive...Keith L. Moore Professor Emeritus, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Toronto. Distinguished embryologist and the author of several

recent Astronomy. I am not asufficient scholar of humanhistory to project myselfcompletely and reliably into thecircumstances that 1400 years agowould have prevailed.

Certainly, I would like to leave itat that, that what we have seen isremarkable, it may or may notadmit of scientific explanation, there may well have to besomething beyond what weunderstand as ordinary humanexperience to account for thewritings that we have seen." [1]

William Hay

Professor of Oceanogprahy, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, USA.

Professor Hay is one of the best known marinescientist in the USA. Sheikh cAbdul-Majeed A.Zindani met with him and asked him manyquestions about the marine surface, the dividerbetween upper and lower sea, and about theocean floor and marine geology.

"I find it very interesting that thissort of information is in theancient scriptures of the HolyQur'an, and I have no way ofknowing where they would havecome from. But I think it isextremely interesting that theyare there and this work is goingon to discover it, the meaning ofsome of the passages."

And when he was asked about thesource of the Qur'an, he replied, "Well, Iwould think it must be the divine

Page 10: Keith L. Moore - Internet Archive...Keith L. Moore Professor Emeritus, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Toronto. Distinguished embryologist and the author of several

being." [1]

Durja Rao

Professor of Marine Geology teaching at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Sheikh Zindani presented to Prof. Rao manyverses dealing with his area of specialisation, and asked: "What do you think of the existence ofthe scientific information in the Qur'an? How couldProphet Muhammad have known about thesefacts fourteen centuries ago?"

"It is difficult to imagine that thistype of knowledge was existing atthat time, around 1400 years back.May be some of the things theyhave simple idea about, but todescribe those things in greatdetail is very difficult. So this isdefinitely not simple humanknowledge. A normal humanbeing cannot explain thisphenomenon in that much detail. So, I thought the information musthave come from a supernaturalsource." [1]

Professor Siaveda

Professor of Marine Geology, Japan.

Sheikh Zindani asked him a number ofquestions in his area of specialisation, and theninformed him of the Qur'anic verses and Hadithwhich mention the same phenomena he spokeof. One of the questions was concerningmountains. Sheikh Zindani asked him about the

Page 11: Keith L. Moore - Internet Archive...Keith L. Moore Professor Emeritus, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Toronto. Distinguished embryologist and the author of several

shape of mountains; and whether they werefirmly rooted in the earth. "What is your opinionof what you have seen in the Qur'an and theSunnah with regard to the secrets of the Universe, which scientists only discovered now?"

"I think it seems to me very, verymysterious, almost unbelievable. Ireally think if what you have saidis true, the book is really a veryremarkable book, I agree." [1]

Tejatat Tejasen

Chairman of the Department of Anatomy and is the former Dean of the faculty of Medicine, University ofChiang Mai, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Professor Tejasen studied various articles concerning theQur'an and modern embryology. He spent four days withseveral scholars, Muslims and non-Muslims, discussingthis phenomenon in the Qur'an and Hadith. During the 8thSaudi Medical Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia hestood up and said:

"In the last three years, I becameinterested in the Qur'an... From mystudies and what I have learnedthroughout this conference, I believe thateverything that has been recorded in theQur'an fourteen hundred years ago mustbe the truth, that can be proved by thescientific means.

Since the Prophet Muhammad couldneither read nor write, Muhammad mustbe a messenger who relayed this truthwhich was revealed to him as anenlightenment by the one who is eligiblecreator. This creator must be God, orAllah.

I think this is the time to say La ilaha illa

Page 12: Keith L. Moore - Internet Archive...Keith L. Moore Professor Emeritus, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Toronto. Distinguished embryologist and the author of several

Allah, there is no god to worship exceptAllah (God), Muhammad rasoolu Allah,Muhammad is Messenger of Allah...

The most precious thing I have gainedfrom coming to this conference is La ilahailla Allah, and to have become Muslim."[1]

Dr. Maurice Bucaille

Born in 1920, former chief of the Surgical Clinic, University of Paris, has for a long time deeply interested inthe correspondences between the teachings of the Holy Scriptures and modern secular knowledge.

He is the author of a best-seller, "The Bible, TheQur'an and Science" (1976). His classical studiesof the scriptural languages, including Arabic, inassociation with his knowledge ofhieroglyphics, have allowed him to hold amultidisciplinary inquiry, in which his personalcontribution as a medical doctor has producedconclusive arguments. His work, "Mummies ofthe Pharaohs - Modern Medical Investigations"(St. Martins Press, 1990), won a History Prizefrom the Académie Française and another prizefrom the French National Academy ofMedicine.

His other works include: "What is the Origin ofMan" (Seghers, 1988), "Moses and Pharaoh, theHebrews in Egypt", (NTT Mediascope Inc, 1994);and "Réflexions sur le Coran" (Mohamed Talbi &Maurice Bucaille, Seghers, 1989)

After a study which lasted ten years, Dr. MauriceBucaille addressed the French Academy ofMedicine in 1976 concerning the existence in theQur'an of certain statements concerningphysiology and reproduction. His reason for doingthat was that :

"...our knowledge of thesedisciplines is such, that it isimpossible to explain how a textproduced at the time of the Qur'ancould have contained ideas thathave only been discovered inmodern times."

Page 13: Keith L. Moore - Internet Archive...Keith L. Moore Professor Emeritus, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Toronto. Distinguished embryologist and the author of several

"The above observation makes thehypothesis advanced by thosewho see Muhammad as the authorof the Qur'an untenable. Howcould a man, from being illiterate, become the most importantauthor, in terms of literary merits,in the whole of Arabic literature?

How could he then pronouncetruths of a scientific nature thatno other human-being couldpossibly have developed at thattime, and all this without oncemaking the slightest error in hispronouncement on the subject?"
