1. HousekeepingGoal: Maintaining a clean and organized work g genvironment for everyone.
What problems can you see here?

• “At least 45.8% of the accidents studied involved violation of the fundamental principles of p phousekeeping.” (Monitoring of Accidents and Risk Events in Industrial Plants: Krzysztof SWAT. Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine)
• “The benefits of clutter control extend far beyond• The benefits of clutter control extend far beyond injury reduction. Daily habits that support effective h k ihousekeeping.
• Keep your work area unclutteredKeep your work area uncluttered.• Put away chemicals and equipment that
are not in useare not in use.• Clean up drips and spills as they happen.• Wipe down your work area at the end of
the day.

Sink areas are notoriously difficult. This space has good organization.
Good management of daily production.

Remember that fume hoods and l b t tglove boxes count too…

2. Chemical LabelinggOur System of
Communication• Signage on cabinets• Labels on Hazardous
Chemicals: English name, hazard warnings, date received and responsible pparty
• High hazard and time iti t i l h ldsensitive materials should
have date opened marked as well.
![Page 13: Keeping Your Lab Safe - VT EPSCoR...Keeping Your Lab Safe: A Guide to Maintaining a Safe andA Guide to Maintaining a Safe and Healthy Laboratory Presenter: Jeff Rogers April, 2009](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050510/5f9b03a66590546410626883/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
When you grab a container, grab l b la label.
![Page 14: Keeping Your Lab Safe - VT EPSCoR...Keeping Your Lab Safe: A Guide to Maintaining a Safe andA Guide to Maintaining a Safe and Healthy Laboratory Presenter: Jeff Rogers April, 2009](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050510/5f9b03a66590546410626883/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Labeling Experimental Materials or SamplesSamples
Groups of samples can be stored together in a secondary containertogether in a secondary container (providing the individual materials are compatible). The secondary container needs to be labeled with:
• Originator: the name and department of the person to contact for information about safe handling and disposal.
• Identification: include, at l t th l b t t b kleast, the laboratory notebook reference and primary components that are known to be hazardoushazardous
• Identify known hazards• Date the material is made.
![Page 15: Keeping Your Lab Safe - VT EPSCoR...Keeping Your Lab Safe: A Guide to Maintaining a Safe andA Guide to Maintaining a Safe and Healthy Laboratory Presenter: Jeff Rogers April, 2009](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050510/5f9b03a66590546410626883/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
If it is not labeled it will t ll b keventually become an unknown.
![Page 16: Keeping Your Lab Safe - VT EPSCoR...Keeping Your Lab Safe: A Guide to Maintaining a Safe andA Guide to Maintaining a Safe and Healthy Laboratory Presenter: Jeff Rogers April, 2009](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050510/5f9b03a66590546410626883/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Unknown chemicals pose unpredictable hazards to those who handle the material, ,and higher costs for disposal.
![Page 17: Keeping Your Lab Safe - VT EPSCoR...Keeping Your Lab Safe: A Guide to Maintaining a Safe andA Guide to Maintaining a Safe and Healthy Laboratory Presenter: Jeff Rogers April, 2009](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050510/5f9b03a66590546410626883/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
3. Chemical Storage & CompatibilityBirds of a Feather Should Flock Together.
