Triangle Communications (Triangle) understands how important EMT and ambulance services are in our rural areas. We recently reached out to the 15 volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) crews across our service area and surveyed them to see what their needs were to keep this life-saving service available. The response was mixed, some areas have the necessary funding, others were overwhelmed andinneedofhelp, inbothfinancialandpersonnelsupport.

The concern for most crews right now is recruiting new volunteers and being able to keep their EMT/ambulance service going. Training and equipment are also areas where there is a need. Providing this life-saving service to their communities also requires alotoftimeanddedication.CrewmembersmustfirstcompleteanEMT-Bclassandthenarecertificationtraining every two years. These classes can be expensive and some EMTs pay for the classes themselves.

SAVING LIVES IN RURAL MONTANATriangle Supports Local EMT/Ambulance Crews

Triangle assessed the need and is very proud to support our volunteer EMT/ambulance crews in the following ways:

• Cover costs up to $3,500 for 2 departments a year to plan an EMT-B Class course for volunteers.

• Up to $500 for a refresher course taught by an outside instructor.

• Ayearlystipendof$500forequipment.

With funds from this new program, EMT training sessions were held in Hobson, Malta and Rudyard this past year. The turnout was great for these three classes with 40 volunteers going through the trainings.

Triangle is proud to serve rural Montana and proud to be a cooperative that gives back to the communities we serve.

FUNDING AND FIBER Our Triangle crews have been busy plowing new serviceandourcontractorsareplowingfiberintofour more of our service areas.

Upgradingourservicetofiberisexpensive.Inthepast,Trianglewasabletoplanfiberupgradesyears in advance. With reductions in the Universal Service funding Triangle receives every year and

other restrictions put on rural telecommunication cooperatives, Triangle must match the areas that need upgrading to the funding available.

Costs are high to plow to an area with few subscribers per mile. To keep costs down, Triangle is pairing higher cost areas within our service area with areas having more subscribers per mile to balance costs. In some cases, we may not be able to upgrade the entire service area at the same time. Triangle does not make these decision lightly, we are constantly looking at ways to accomplish these upgrades moreefficiently.
