The Philippines schools project

Changing times! There’s a lot happening right now, both with the charity and our personal lives. The schools have been under a lot of pressure, needing much more accommodation. Our local area has experienced an influx of people due to two expanding local factories, which in turn has meant more children needing education, of course. The advent of K to 12 added to that pressure but now at last, it seems that the

authorities are coming up with some concrete proposals to increase the accommodation. In our personal lives, we are finding it harder to make the parcels and shift them about, added to which we are shortly due to move to another part of the country, and the freighting costs

will probably rise considerably as a result. So this might be a good time to stop making them. On the one hand, that means that a lot of what we currently freight out will now have to be sourced locally when we arrive in the Philippines. On the other hand, we will hope to have more financial resources at our disposal if our funds are not consumed with building and freight costs. Hopefully we will be able to provide many more classroom resources for the students and teachers as a result.

Everything we do is all thanks to you!

Talking of boxes, we had the largest number of boxes

ever to unload when we arrived in the Philippines

early in January. As

part of tidying the house prior to our move, we had

made and freighted out 24 boxes. When we arrived in the Philippines, we found

they had been joined by the

two boxes that hadn’t been delivered by

the time we left the previous

year! So lots more

wonderful gifts from you

to distribute!

Once underway, it didn’t take too long for the room to take shape. As with all our previous builds, it is to latest spec, earthquake proof, a serious requirement in this part of the world. Instructional notices of what to do in the event are posted in every classroom.

There were some big, old trees on the site of our new high school

classroom. Clearing them took lots of hard work but the guys soon had the foundations

down.

The room looked really smart once completed, and Jo and I took great delight in cutting the

ribbon to formally declare the room open

and ready for use.

Last year we tidied up the kitchen and the feeding room. This year, we were able to make them much smarter by tiling the floors and sink areas, making both areas a lot more hygienic.

Before and after!

The Barangay Hall, in the corner of the elementary school grounds, gets a lot of visitors. The day care centre is based there, and twice a week there are

maternity and post-natal clinics with a midwife in attendance. The toilet facilities

were not very good so, from a health perspective, it seemed like a good idea to make some new ones, which of course could also be accessed by the elementary school students when on their breaks etc.

For Valentine’s day, the high school home economics group put on a mock gala dinner for us and the staff, to give the students practice at

preparing and cooking multiple dishes, then serving them and waiting at table. We were very impressed by

their efforts but realised that they were being hampered by a lack of equipment. So we bought a stainless steel table for them

and bought it home on a jeepney (as you do) and they were delighted.

We then asked for a list of their catering needs and set about getting together a basic set of culinary requirements.

We really enjoy giving these out to the local community

and it is all welcome and well received when we visit the

clinic to distribute your goods

although not every one appeared so happy!

Smiles all round

As you know, we get given lots of clothes and the like

which we use to pack around the more delicate items we

freight out.

Our students have enjoyed sports success

So it’s nice to see that local government is now lending a hand. This will be a three storey classroom

block, it progressed quite quickly while we were there.

In addition to earthquakes, flooding is an annual problem. Names of the schools are

written on the roof so they can be identified from a helicopter

Drawing names

for scholarships

Traditionally, most schools have relied on outside assistance to build and enhance the facilities. These are two buildings in the elementary school built by other sponsors.

The elementary school came first in the

cleanest and greenest competition this year,

it’s not hard to see why!

Gift giving is

always such a

pleasure

The students practice gardening and

cultivation as part of their studies.

As we always say to our sponsors, thank you so much for making all of this possible.
