Fondation MartellLAUNCHED IN 2016 IN COGNAC, THE FONDATION D’ENTREPRISE MARTELL WILL OPEN TO THE PUBLIC ITS GROUND-FLOOR JUNE 30TH, 2018, AS WELL AS ITS ROOFTOP.Downstairs, a nearly 900 meters square space will be dedicated to immersive artistic installations, specifically designed for the location. Upstairs, the design and the furnishing of the rooftop bar will be entrusted to designers and craftspeople.

Between the summer of 2017 and the fall of 2018, the Pavillon Martell de SelgasCano is set in the gardens of the Fondation and is taken over by invited creators for events fostering the coming together and exchange of knowledge. Representative of the future openings, this programme’s aim is to breathe new life into local crafts that blend skilled trades and contemporary design (woodwork, wickerwork, ceramics, glasswork, textiles…) while simultaneously providing a platform for regional performing arts organisations (theatre, music, performance art). The Fondation d’entreprise Martell hopes it can be a driver of growth, creating value for the town of Cognac and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region with exhibitions, workshops, a living-lab, events, residencies in complementary fields (design, architecture, artisan trades, digital, danse, literature, music…).

The inaugural installation was entrusted to the company Adrien M & Claire B with an exclusive new piece: L’Ombre de la vapeur. Thanks to a digital device, it lets the

guests wander and interact among thin metallic clouds, on which are projected white, moving particles. The piece is a living, thinking creature that adjusts to the

rhythm of the visitors’ walking pace, gestures and pauses on floating furniture.

A 10th century fortress

The story of cognac - alternatively

The Royal Château of Cognac that dominated the Charente was initially a 10th century fortress designed to stop invasions by the Normans and then in the 15th century a seigniorial dwelling where one of the most famous French kings, François I, was born.

Baron Otard, who had established his cognac business in 1795, realised very quickly that the thickness of the building’s walls was perfect and unique for the aging of his eaux-de-vie. He acquired the château, thus saving it from total destruction.

The Royal Château of Cognac, now a listed monument, is a witness to the history of France and a major cognac house.

We organise different experiences, each one based on two stories: the history of France and Cognac Baron Otard from inception to today.

Today, a historic monument, Crazannes was built in the 14th and 15th centuries a few hundred metres from the Crazannes quarries. The Black Prince and François I stayed here. Château ChesnelA unique château in the region, thanks to its original architecture.

The whole is a harmonious construction of outbuildings and château that have remained intact since the first stones were laid at the beginning of the 17th century. The main part of the château is on two levels, flanked by two wings at right angles and at the angles of the quadrilateral are two massive square towers that are topped by a parapet on strong cantilevers that mask the roofs, decorated with crenellations that render this imposing building particularly charming.

Romanesque abbey dating from the end of the 11th century. The transept and choir were partially destroyed during the 100 Years War whereas the monastic buildings were burned down during the Wars of Religion. The abbey was sold as a National Asset in 1795 then transformed into a pottery until 1825. Its classification in 1948 as a historic monument enabled restoration work to begin which has recently acquired a new impetus since 2016.

MAISON DE LA LIEUTENANCE

The House of the Lieutenancy sits at the beginning of la rue Grande, the

main thoroughfare of Cognac from the Middle Ages right up to the middle of the 19th century. Itself medieval, it was rebuilt during the 17th century and the sculpted wood on the façade probably dates from the 15th century. The door, flanked by pilasters and the interior

fittings (fireplaces, paintings) dates from the 17th century. The property belongs

to the House of Prunier.

“The real history of cognac”! The spectacle takes place on two evenings in July on the banks of the Charente at the foot of Bourg-

Charente château. It tells the story of cognac through 11 scenes, from antiquity to today.

A local association has created the show which traces the real story of traditions and know-how that are unique in the world and

that produce cognac.

More than 20 stone sculptures, created for various editions of the Symposium, that began in 2002, are on show beside the Town Hall and on the main square. The works of art are unique and original - monumental in most cases - and form an open-air museum accessible to all.
