Transformers (2007) It's not exactly a trucking movie, no – but it does feature Optimus Prime,

arguably the most famous truck (shaped robot) in

movie history.

Michael Bay's series of action films based on the beloved 80's cartoon is

now into its fourth instalment, with talk of a fifth and sixth. The script and the acting may not always deliver, but hey,

you watch a film like this for the effects, right?

White Line Fever (1975)This is truly a film of its

era; not only was it made at the peak of the 1970s trucker craze, it also tells the story of an ordinary

working man who returns from Vietnam to find

corruption has taken over the business he left

behind.

Directed by Jonathan Kaplan, it's said his goal was to make a modern

day western, influenced by the films of Sam

Peckinpah – who turned his own hand to trucking movies just three years

later.

Convoy (1978)Based on the novelty country and western

song of the same name by C. W. McCall released a few years earlier, this

was a movie made when the craze for trucking and CB radio was at its peak.

Directed by Sam Peckinpah, it stars Kris Kristofferson as trucker

“Rubber Duck” and Ernest Borgnine as Sheriff “Dirty Lyle”

Wallace.

Smokey and the Bandit (1977) Originally planned as a low-budget B-movie,

Smokey and the Bandit got mainstream attention after Burt Reynolds read the script and decided

he'd like to star in it.

It's not a subtle film – the majority of it is one big car chase - but it was a

smash hit at the box office. It might have been

the biggest film of the year, had it not been for

this other little movie called Star Wars...

Hell Drivers (1957) This British film boasts an excellent cast, led by Sir

Stanley Baker and Herbert Lom and

including a pre-Bond Sean Connery.

Interestingly, the role of James Bond was offered

to Stanley Baker – he turned it down because he didn't want to commit to a three film contract.

It may not have the excitement of a modern Hollywood blockbuster, but it's certainly a film

worth watching!

Duel (1971) Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by

Richard Matheson – based on his own short

story of the same name – Duel stars Dennis Weaver as a man being chased by

a sinister tanker truck driver.

Critically acclaimed, it's generally considered to be one of the greatest

movies ever made for TV. Yes, that's right – this was

a made-for-TV movie.

Las Acacias (2011) Wait, what is a low-key Argentine drama doing

on this list? Well, it's proving that truck driving movies don't have to be loud and action-filled – a slow burner can be just

as effective.

Winner of the Caméra d'Or at the 2011 Cannes

Film Festival, the film follows the journey of

truck driver Rubén and his passengers, single

mother Jacinta and her baby, between Paraguay

and Buenos Aires.
